this is damage control, but i agree that there should be a standard in reviewing games, like Famitsu's review standard

1.2 - so.....
Gamespy, Gamespot & Xplay were too low too? This game is getting hammered on by a vast array of sites now. I dont think this is just an "IGN" issue...this game just isnt that good.

I will say I like your idea of the 4 person review system....but...most sites usually arent going to have the kind of staff to put a review system like that in place.

The thing is the game may not be as bad as hour of victory and a lot of other crap games that share such ratings but we all expected a lot from free radical and they failed in so many ways. I have played the demo and the graphics are definitely not worth a 4.5 but i guess maybe ign over reacted. Everyone is pretty much disappointed in haze and what better way to tell them than with a big FAT 4.5

1.5 - isn't good or really suck is two different thing
if 4.5 is used to tell people how bad the game is, why don't they just do either a 0 or 10, what is the scale from 1 to 10 for...

I guess some of you just don't get it...

Sad as it sounds fact is that theirs been an anti ps3 slant on a lot of na media. IMO the game wasnt al that but certainly deserves a better score than turok... That and the recent gamespot ranking change really points to ms rallying the troops imo.

then I linked the scores and the Ubisoft brand....mm.... suspicious uh? two rude scores in a row.

The game is not awesome, but is WAY better than titles like denied ops.

There are far worse games out there that got better reviews than Haze did. I have a feeling it was rated based on how it performed relative to the hype instead of how it performed relative to other products in the same category.

No, the game didn't live up to expectations. However, that doesn't make it worse than Blacksite. :P

Wow, this game really is getting bad reviews. The best one on metacritic is a 71 and they say "So Haze, as a PS3 exclusive, is far from a reason to own a PS3.". That's from PSM3 UK magazine.

I have too many games to play now anyway so I'm passing on Haze. The played the demo but it didn't really get me to want the game. It looked like every other shooter game besides the part of injecting nectar.

4.5/10 is pushing too far.

It can't be as bad as Conflict Denied ops

While its not a great game as Developers hyped it (No not sony, the developers said its going to be better then halo and Free Radical Fans Hyped it) its average of 6-7.5

2.2 - You know
Blacksite:Area 51 scored 2 points higher in graphics than Haze on IGN, and I really don't see that much difference. And from what I saw of the demo, I would have imagined the scoring to be the other way around.

Anyway, it's just time to let it go. They are free to have their own opinion. Maybe they really, really hated that flamethrower.

I picked up the game today. While the vehicular portions need refinement I have had a very enjoyable time with the rest. I had Army of Two and returned it and I almost never take a game back or trade it in. Haze is easily superior to that. Not in the graphics department but in overall gameplay and value of time spent. And none of my AI team mates have been responsible for my death the way they constantly were in AO2.

The core of what the devs were trying to produce is a good story and idea. The execution however isn't perfect. When you are riding in on the second mission and the news chatter is reporting the atrocities of the rebel leader you begin to see how Mantel is slanting the intel to suit their goals and the idea of PSYOPS on your own personnel gets a decent treatment as subject matter.

For all of the idiocy of the comments of the AI they are no different than Marines I have been around on occasion. Juvenile and sure of their invincibility. Those of us that are older knew we were only bulletproof on our good days and then only if we were very very careful.

The game isn't a 4.5 and IGN should be ashamed considering the scores they have given some other titles. They stated they give a 10 not because a game is perfect but because it pushes the bounderies. That is a lie. They awarded GTA4, which I own, 10s across the board. Is it a 10 across the board? Hardly.

Let's look at graphics. To push the bounderies graphically means they would certainly have to be going beyond anything from 2007. This means the graphics in GTA4 have to go beyond Bioshock, beyond HALO3, beyond Uncharted, beyond Heavenly Sword. Quite frankly if we are honest about it GTA4 has some damn ugly graphics in it and collision detection that is a sin.

At the end of the day the big issue I have with those bunch of scabs over at IGN is this. A game that rates a 4.5 is a pretty shameful title. Issues must be quite glaring. I mean literally jumping out of the game and punching you in the face. Yet in the past 3 previews conductedby IGN those shameful glaring issues are where? Where are they mentioned? Nowhere. Why not? Politics and money. IGN is ever bit as guilty as Gamespot.

Frankly Ubisoft should consider cutting IGN off completely. Ordinarily I would not be for such a move but sites like IGN, Gamespot, and 1up have become so corrupt and influence motivated they have no right wielding the sort of influence they do. Suddenly game makers are having to cater to reviewers rather than gamers and our experience as consumers is all the poorer for it.

Regardless if you are a 360 fan, PS3 fan, or Wii fan, or window fan these type of actions hurt everyone that loves this hobby we all share. In the midst of all of our bickering in which I and everyone here participates, at the end of the day we all share the same hobby and the same desire. To enjoy that title alone or with friends that transports us to this other worldly experience. And companies like IGN damage that experience and are thieves of the past time of us all.

@ Breakfast. I have been in the game about 3 hours and haven't jumped into MP. Co-op though is the king's biscuit and well worth it. I am going to catch a movie here at the house but I will get into MP later tonight. I will be happy to let you know what I think.

The game isn't perfect. It has some holes in it. Noticeable 'some one drove a truck through that wall' type of holes. And it isn't a HALO killer. No game is a HALO killer because HALO which I really like is unique. just as Splinter Cell doesn't kill my favorite series - Metal Gear although I like Splinter Cell.

But for all of IGN's talk of pushing bounderies, they fail to mention Haze does break and set some new ones. The Co-op drop in drop out is quite an achievement. The best yet and a mark on the way this needs to work.

Also the cutscenes move in and out of the game quite well. No more set levels, just checkpoints through the entire game. The story which some have criticized beats several other recent military shooters with one gun behind it's back. The game is flawed for sure and perhaps I look more to what the game might have been but there is no denying I do not regret having spent the money or more importantly, my time. I am looking forward for some versus MP later tonight.

As I stated in a prior thread, the game doesn't hold up well on Easy or Normal. But as soon as you move to Hard the combat on foot comes into it's own. It has the frantic nature to it with just enough of an element of control. As in the demo, the Hardest level is locked likely until you complete the game once on Hard.

I think you might have convinced me to try this game (and by try, I mean buy).
I love FPS's, the last 6 reviews here in N4G have been 6 and 7s, not a 4.5 like IGN. One bad review might not be indicative of a game (heck, my ultimate proof, I liked Dark Messiah!)

The reason you convince me is your arguments, and the fact that your story could have been told by me if a had bought the game. I also played Army of Two and enjoyed it, but returned it in days; my favorite series is MGS, and I love Halo because of the 4 player coop, which finally Haze is the second game to feature that.

I might just buy the game today when I get out of work. Good job guys.

Sony fans will hype any and every PS3 game to be announced as long as its exclusive. HS,Lair, and now Haze. All games said to be reason to own a PS3, and now look at how those games turned out. HS was the only decent one, and thats only because it ripped off so many other franchises.Check around at how many PS3 owners are talking about killzone2 as a reason to buy a PS3. They claim its a system seller already.. Why would they think that though? What proof do they have? The first one was not a good game, so it has a bad track record already. The only reason they are hyping it is because its an exclusive to Sony.I swear a game with Pong like graphics could be announced for PS3, and as long as it was exclusive it would be hailed as the greatest game ever created.

I agree. That score was way too low. I would say around a 6.5 or even a 7.1 but a 4.5 is beyond horrible. I've played some bad games but Haze cannot be THAT bad.

I'm not offended, but IGN has been giving PS3 games low scores as of late. If they're not within the 4.5 or 6.0 range, they're between the 8.0 and 9.0 range. I have yet to see them actually praise a game without being...idk douchebags?

You know what's also rude?

Over-hyping subpar games and expecting us to pay the new next-gen "premium" of $60 for these half-assed attempts at games that MAYBE last 10 hours if you're LUCKY. Don't try to sell me your crap. Make good games, they will get good reviews, and people will buy them. Anything else is an insult to me as a gamer.

If IGN's score was too low, perhaps - just perhaps - it was in response to the hype the game was getting, and the score reflected not just the quality of the game, but the reviewer's disappointment?

Not saying that justifies it, but really, the more you expect out of a game, the more you tend to think it sucks when it doesn't completely match your expectations.

@Below:

I agree that, in theory, hype *shouldn't* affect a personal reviewer's score, but that doesn't mean it *doesn't*.

Again, not saying this justifies it, but I think that's where it came from. Even so, IGN's review is no more "rude" than tricking gamers into buying a sub-par game.

They had a bunch of ideas, but it didnt all come together.

Edit: Hype should have nothing to do with a review. You should review a game based on its merits and other games of the same genre. Not because it didnt live up to some dudes hype.

Hype can be a factor when a fanboy does the reviewing. Even if a certain game did not meet the high expectation this doesn't give the reviewr a reason to kill the score. This is bullcrap if u ask me. Games should be rated according to what they offer not on hype and what have you. This game deserves more than a 7. Face it, IGN screwed up.

5.5 - If hype IS a factor....
If hype is indeed a factor, why didn't Halo get slammed somewhat? The single player was mediocre, the graphics were no better than Gears or Bio. The multiplayer was good but we seen it in Halo2. Yet it was hailed as the second coming.....why?? Halo was a 6.5-7 /10 tops, but everyone gave it 9.5 & 10 BULL. Bioshock took a hit for not having multiplayer.....does every game NEED deathmatch?? Can't we just play a great single player experience? People said Uncharted was great but had no multiplayer. In Uncharted??? come on. Maybe a co-op mode but thats it. People complain that all these games today need deathmatch or multiplayer, yet I never see anyone playing the multiplayer in these games, except COD4, Halo, and sports games. Reviewers I think have lost the original point of games...they're GAMES, fun is the #1 factor. When I was a kid I loved monopoly, my sister hated it, not ALL games are for everyone. Why do you think the Wii is so popular???, why is Rock Band, guitar hero, DDR so popular??? THEY'RE FUN! IF you're having fun and enjoying your game, then mission accomplished for that game. Peace.
