MGS4 Limited Edition Preorders a Huge Disaster

One might think that after the registration disaster that was the Metal Gear Online beta sign up process that Konami would be well prepared for the pre-ordering onslaught that awaited them today. Surprisingly, it wasn't, resulting in what can be be described as a clusterfuck of massive proportions as many gamers attempted to order their Metal Gear Solid 4 limited edition PlayStation 3 bundle.

In addition to tacking on a $500 insurance charge-which Kotaku are told is mandatory and refundable, though they can't confirm right now-They have yet to read of a single successful check out for the "gun metal" version of the console. As of right now, the Konami store is throwing a 503 error, most likely due to the heavy volume of MGS4 fans trying desperately to buy their PS3s.

I wonder just how many consoles Konami made to sell. They should really work to improve their servers because MGS is an indication of what great games can do to their servers. I also wonder if the console actually does have some special material which is what makes it so expensive.

oh no, not another kotaku ps3 sucks story. konami hasnt really had to deal with so much online traffic before, i didnt mind it with the beta and this shouldnt be that big of a deal either as long as they have it fixed by game release then its no harm no foul

I don't know why a $500 dollar Insurance charge is mandatory, but I do know that I tried to click on the link for Pre-order and a Error message came up. I was pretty sure that it was because of the high volume of orders.

But I'm really excited about the fact that all of the Pre-orders for MGS4 literally crashed that webpage with pre-orders. That's a good sign for what's to come when the game releases. The rush for the Metal Gear Online Beta in the United States was the same exact thing.

As long as Konami will refund the $500 dollar Insurance charge once it's delivered, that's O.k. I'm not sure how many people will be shelling out $1000+ dollars for a Limited Edition MGS4 PS3, but I know that the bidding for them on Ebay will reach a thousand dollars easily.

Good thing I already have my PS3 and I'm geared up for MGS4, but that Limited Edition MGS4 PS3 is definantly a Collectors item. I wonder how many were made....

I don't think they meant a $500 insurance charge, rather a charge for $500 worth of insurance. Although I don't know why it would only be a charge to cover $500 insurance if the LE itself costs $600... But $500 for insurance is BOGUS, no doubt...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get anywhere trying to place an order so idk. Not to say I even would have ordered it had I been able to but I was curious. It's hard to drop $600 on something you wouldn't even want to open, etc, and I already have a launch 60 w/ a 180GB drive inside it... But crashing the Konami site probably isn't as hard as you'd think. Their site isn't setup for high traffic, and similar online stores have had similar problems when offering a special. I remember the NISA store had the same problem [I forget why] then shortly after they announced the NISA store was closing and it would become Rose Queen. I think the Atlus store at one point crashed as well when they offered something...

What I don't get is why Konami now lists that more stock will be available tomorrow. Did they have to cut their offering today just so people could check out? Did the cut it short to give others a shot tomorrow? Why the need to now offer this in two or more batches? Maybe this isn't as extremely limited as once thought? I just find it surprising they're now saying check back May 20th because they've run out of stock for today...

The insurance was a glitch. I got up that point and didn't buy. I backed up using the back button (not the browser back arrow) and then when I got to my shopping cart I went forward normally and viola! $620.98 - no insurance charge. At least this one won't be broken right out of the box like my HALO Edition 360's play and charge kit which was dead brand new.
