IGN: Grid Cars Detailed

When the developers at Codemasters first stopped by the IGN offices to show them Grid, the latest racing title from the team behind DiRT, they didn't come in the door waving an enormous list of cars. The point of Grid, they said, isn't to collect vehicles - it's to collect wins.

Compared to games like Forza Motorsport 2, which boasts more than 300 cars, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which includes about 70, Grid's garage is relatively modest. But if you're a fan of the world's top-performing automobiles, Codemasters in convinced you won't be disappointed with Grid's selection of 45 racing icons.

I actually gave the demo a 2nd chance and once I got used to how the cars handled, it was actually pretty good. Compared to the way the cars handle in GT5 though, this game doesn't come close but it does a decent job, plus the damaged models look really nice. But is their really only 45 cars? I atleast hope theirs variations of each. Either way I wouldn't mind picking this up.

9 - and people made fun of the 70 cars in GT:P
Now Grid has 45! Not to knock GRID, because I will buy it, but I now feel better about buying GT5:P! I wonder how the damage will look on the GT5:P update in November, because GRID has the best looking damage next to Burnout. GRID damage appears more varied than Burnout though?

10 - GRID Demo Review
The first time I played the demo, I was utterly appalled by what I thought was frankly a rubbish car game with pretty-ish graphics.

However, I decided to give it another go, so I fired up the demo once more with an open mind. Something seemed to be different the second time I played the demo, I can't quite put my finger on it. I know it doesn't have the same realism in terms of car handling and graphics as Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, but quite honestly that would be a rubbish comparison because GRID isn't trying to be a simulator like GT5:P is. What really impresses me is the fact Codemasters have tried to make the way the cars handle and respond to user input fun rather than bordering on the tedium of realism.

If I were a graphics whore I would probably start making comparisons against GT5:P, but I'm not going to. Instead, I'll just say that the quality and refinements of the graphics and visuals effects are well suited to style of gameplay. It seems there is a nice touch to the graphics that remind you that you are in fact just playing a game.

It goes without saying that many people will buy this just for the lineup of cars - and i'd be one of them. GRID contains a lot of cars that GT5:P should have had, the Pagani Zonda and the Porshe 911 to name but a few.

Based on the demo:

Graphics (8/10) - Decent with warm colours, although certainly not groundbreaking. The damage modelling is up to standard but nothing special.

Sound (8/10) - Engine revs sound good, the gasps from the spectators can be amusing at times.

Gameplay (9/10) - Excellent, when your thrashing a car around one of the circuits it just feels right.

Overall (8/10) - If the final build is anything like the demo, Codemasters have done themselves very proud.

11 - Like it Said
Forza may have lots and lots of cars, hundreds even.
But this doesn't mean the game will not have "enough"
like, in forza, who likes using the crappy '92 Nissan and stuff
like that haha.

I have a feeling downloadable cars and such is going to be
part of this...Seems like i good idea.. (to make money)
