Is GTA IV this Generation's Ocarina of Time?

Gameplayer writer Mark Serrels has explored the long term impact of GTA IV following its rousing reception, finding a lot of parallels with the legendary Zelda game Ocarina of Time.

"But at the end of my marathon session a couple of the Rockstar guys came up, and out of sheer curiosity asked me what I though of the game. At the time I was a bit speechless, and after an awkward pause the words that came tumbling out of my mouth were: "It reminded me of Ocarina of Time"."

1.2 - Well they can't be honest
Look at what happened to Jeff Grettsman when a review was honest.

They do have families to feed after all.

It's sad that you can't be honest without the risk of losing your job

1.3 - Sure you can
You just need to justify your opinion. Gertzman got sacked because cnet is a corporation, not a gaming site.

1.4 - Fair point
But a lot of these gaming sites are indeed owned by higher corporations.

Just the way Gamespot is owned by Cnet. If you have an opinion that causes advertisement and/or spites your particular corporation's investors, the employee takes the brunt.

Grettsman justified and explained his reasons for Kane & Lynch's low score in great detail. Still got canned

And that's not the only problem.

If a game is hyped up, then it's EXPECTED to be good regardless of the reality of it being crap or not. If someone gave halo 3 like a 2 out of 10 then you better believe that person would get blacklisted

Same as if metal gear turned out crappy and someone gave it a 2 out of 10.

So it's not just the job security, it's also the fact of being "the guy" that gave "the greatest game ever" a poor score.

1.5 - Yeah
I agree that Gertzman did jusiify his opinion and Kane & Lynch was crapola. I just wouldn't apply the advertising guides editorial thing across all sites.

That whole Gamespot thing was whack. I have no respect for them at all. To be honest I am surprised a site of that magnitude needs to care about one advertiser getting their feathers ruffled.

Off topic, but in my opinion it is in an advertisers best interests for the readers of a site to belive the editorial word, so they need to take a hit every now and again.

Sometimes though, publishers think they are onto a winner and there is kneejerk reaction when reviews come in and say.. hey this is not good.

Get off your broken down gimp horses. GTA IV owns any Zelda game ever created including Ocarina of Time. Go play your ocarinas while I jack your gimp horse, take your fuity flute and beat you with it.

In the end it will come down to the way generations remeber thier childhood.

Ocarina, Doom, Duke, Mario and co. are my childhood. But my younger nephew has never played any of those. He will grow up with GTA IV and Wii Fit and Spore.

But that goes for any form of media

Just the way most of us of the 80's remember the transformers or voltron as being the greatest, by time kids get to our age, they'll be saying stuff like pokemon or naruto being the greatest.

im sorry guys but as a hardcore gta fan i do gotta say that san andreas was way way better. maybe not graphic wize but in everything else it really was a better game. it has tons and tons of side missions and activities, properties and houses, more story missions, more vehicles, the vehicles had special abilities (like tow trucks actually worked, fork lifts workd), parashooting, planes. if they remade san andreas in next gen it would clearly beat gta4

You nailed it man. I totally agree with you. I feel San Andreas is still the best GTA game to date. It had all the bells and whistles to entertain you for a long time. Everything but the graphics and physics kills GTA4. BUT, San Andreas of its time was very stunning in the graphics dep. I thought we would never see such game as big as San Andreas on the PS2.

I agree with some of your sentiments, but disagree with others.

I think they needed to scale back GTA with GTA4 because of all the new tech processing behind the scenes. San Andreas was huge, but it was quite bare - I thought. I like that they've brought the size back in GTA4 and filled in all the bare areas of San Andreas.

To bring GTA4 into this generation they had to get all the current gen physics running, and I think it makes the experience richer as a whole.
I'd really had enough of canned animation last generation and in a huge sandbox game, where you don't have to follow a linear path, making things happen differently every time you play makes a big difference to the core experience.
There are elements I wish they'd kept from GTAs of old but there are plenty of others that improve upon the existing game (like the cell phone, shooting someone and watching their body react in a lifelike fashion)

I think they had no choice but to get the physics into GTA. We couldn't carry on with last gen technology forever. The euphoria integration will have taken months, hence forcing Rockstar to cut back the size of the game. So now that it's all been tested and it works Rockstar can spend more time adding content.
Think of GTA4 as this generations GTA3.
We'll get a Vice City equivalent and a San Andreas at some point.
Now that the tech is down expect the games to get a lot larger.
Rockstar have said themselves that DVD will be too small for GTA5.

Anyway. GTA4 beats them all, in my opinion, purely for the multiplayer.
Playing GTA with all your mates in the same game just can't be beaten. Genius.

6 - No way GTA IV is better than Zelda OoT
When Ocarina of Time came out, the reviews were based on the gameplay, graphics, music, story, things that make a game to be great, and the reviews were useful. Now they give games a 100 because there is hype, or because they receive money form the company; they also take points off for being 640p instead of 720p, or because one console has one more pixel than the other, because on runs at a frame faster than the other. I mean come on!... reviews nowadays are BS. When I read about a game, I don't want to think is bad because it got a 60 for those stupid reasons; reasons that just tech freaks or extreme fanboys can see. I want to know about a story, about how it plays, about how much fun i will have when i am playing it.

Zelda Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece. Is a game that I can play over and over again and still get immersed in the game and feel the excitement like the first time, and that is something that for me deserves a perfect score. I am not saying GTA 4 is not fun, but it is not by any means a master piece as Zelda OoT.

If reviewers would give scores the way they did before, GTA 4 would have got at most an 85, and you all know it

I think you're wrong on GTA4 not being a masterpiece.
GTA4 has technical faults, but the reviews are rating the game purely on experience. Nothing to do with resolution.
GTA4 has great gameplay, graphics, music, story, just like OoT.

Look at Smash Brothers Brawl. It got rave reviews even though the graphics aren't very good and it's really last gen in the way it plays. BUT it's been rated purely on the gameplay experience.
Not resolution, tech, graphics...

Mass Effect. Rated very highly purely on gameplay even when textures load in as you play.

Reviewers only bring up resolution problems, technical problems when it detracts from the game as a whole. They don't necessarily make the game great.

With the advanced technology of the 360 and PS3 you are expected to add physics, AI and lighting textures etc to every game. It is much harder these days to develop a AAA game. All the developers say you need 4 times as many people working on a 360, PS3 game these days because of all the tech at your disposal.

Ocarina is amazing, but it is quite basic by modern game standards. When you kill a baddie he explodes and disappears. In a 360/PS3 game people expect the baddie to react using ragdoll physics, fly backward, collide with other objects in turn sending them flying.

Am I right in thinking you are a Wii owner?
A Wii is great fun, but if you have a friend with a 360 or a PS3, I'd seriously pop round to their house and check out GTA4.
In particular look at the richness of detail WITH draw distance.
Look how bodies react when you shoot them/ run them over /push past them.
That is something we have never had until this generation. This is breaking new ground. The sort of thing Nintendo did with OoT back in the day.
Ocarina had the draw distance, first third person game to use Z targeting. It pushed boundaries as well as being a great game. The things that GTA4 does in this generation.

Considering GTA4 gives such a rich experience AND is a great game at the same time. I'd say it's a masterpiece.

I agree with everyone that Ocarina was the better game. It was and still is KING. BUT GTA4 is pretty special too.

The question is what hyped game is NOT the "Ocarina of Time" of this generation?, considering this generation alone is handing perfect scores and "teh bezt game eva" like Halloween candy to anything that is hyped and advertised enough

and that raises the question, are ALL those games really that good? are we lowering our standards? or have we finally let the hype train take over?

No Ocarina was one of the greatest games ever made, still is. Ocarina gave you emotions when you played it, it was exciting and dare I say it.. magical. You never knew what was coming next and couldnt wait to find out.

GTA at 50% is like, go here, speak this person, go kill these people, drive round, repeat. and is getting a bit boring already.

oot is up there with res evil 4 on the gamecube as well.

GTA IV is the KING of sandbox.

Ocarina is like fine wine. I re-played it in 2005/2006 (it is that long and hard) and still felt it was brilliant. Top of the pack.

To everyone saying GTA IV got such great praise because of hype, where the hell do you think that hype came from?

I remember before GTA III nobody cared about it. III was a revolution to gaming and ever since then the GTA series has garnered perhaps the most attention and following out of any other franchise. GTA IV was hyped up before it was first announced. Gaming sites have showed so much attention to GTA IV because it a big deal. 500 million in it's first week of release? Ya, I'd say the gaming community cares. That's where the hype comes from, one of, if not, the biggest fanbase in gaming

As for it being the OoT of this gen, well, you better get used to hearing it. It's time for some new timeless classics to makes it's way into history.

GTA 4 looks like an awesome game and I like the story every much, but overall it hasn't really caught my attention. From the videos and reviews I have seen, the game feels like GTA 3 disguised in a next-gen armour.

GTA 4 is a good probably a good game, but I don't think it's this generation Ocarina. Ocarina was perfect in all ways and I don't think any title in this generation will nail these elements.

Off topic but seriously though, I would have loved to see a Zelda title going in the direction of something from team-ico.

No offence, but I think a lot of people are missing the point here. I'm not saying one is better than the other. It's not a comparison piece - it's showing the similarities in its reception, and how it has been seen by gamers.

I don't understand the big Ocarina of Time thing. It's nothing compared to the snes Zelda and the graphics were fugly. That fat fearie almost gave me nightmares. The story was just ok and Navi is more annoying than JarJar Binks.
