1.2 - thats the problem
you only played a 'little bit'.
Honestly (not bashing), you have to spend a bit of time on MGO to really get into and appreciate it. It's based on 'skills' and upgrading them gradually.
At first, I too only played for a short while and dismissed it as "meh".
But then the Metal Gear fan in me forced me to go back...and I actually spent endless hours in the beta, upgrading my soldier to become faster, a better shooter and more efficient with CQC.
Its definitely not a pick-up-and-play title like COD4 is. But honestly, after you rank up a bit and start playing with people of a higher level, it gets even MORE intense than COD4. The skills aspect really sets it apart from other online games and IMO makes it better than other games in that it doesn't have everybody on the same level. Like say for instance in COD4...anybody on lvl 20 has the same access to weapons and perks, whereas in MGO, you lvl up the skills that YOU feel like you'd like to be better in. And they have 16 different skill sets to rank up, with more downloadable skills later in MGO's life. With this, each soldier is different and unique to its player, with his own strengths and weaknesses.
The slower pace of the soldiers (another gripe I initially had), is one of the skills that can be upgraded (SKILL: FAST MOV), so in my weeks playing, I had a trooper that was faster than most everyone else and had better shooting skills (SKILL: ASSLT RIFLE MASTERY).
The selection of weapons was excellent and also customizable with Drebin Points matches and the first person mode and over the shoulder shooting was accurate. The "Auto-Aim" function was sort of broken and I've read the same thing in previews of MGS4, but its MUCH easier to get used to OTS shooting and FPS anyways.
The addition of "Sneaking Mode" with playable Old Snake and Mk.II was AWESOME. I don't know if your skills were upgradeable with Snake, because he was already a better soldier than the createable characters, but it really gave a good 'training' for MGS4 when it finally drops. The new map Midtown Maelstrom also supposedly gave a good look into one of the first levels of MGS4. Needless to say, I was in love with the Beta and look forward to the retail version...I just hope I don't have to start allll over with my skills, but I'll most likely have to.
I agree, there are some things that need tweaking in the game which I won't go into detail on, but the MGO Community Support Page which is the internal MGO page that we were supposed to put our suggestions, bugs, concerns, problems and finds was filled with great things from players which in no doubt will make the final release of MGO an excellent addition. That was the purpose of the beta after all ;)
Konami should've picked a different time though, because after GTAIV dropped, the servers were a lot less feedback. The STEEP learning curve and the fact that you have to actually 'build' a good soldier instead of hopping in and going on endless killing streaks like other games turned a lot of gamers off and I'm not sure even the retail version would attract the masses, but MG fans and people looking for a great online experience that's out-of-the-norm should be in for a real
treat come June 12th. :]

I'll give MGO one thing. It had some of the best interfaces, gameplay customizations and options of any online game I played. I fell in love with the game before I even played it.
And then I had to press two buttons to shoot. That's what I thought was the worst thing about the game. The button layout was horrible.
One button designated to switch in and out of auto-aim, a feature that should be chosen by the host anyway? Please.
If the button layout didn't feel so awkward and wasted, I might have put some more time into it.

1.6 - @ EZCheez
I also found that sort of awkward, and just pressing R1 without first holding L1 makes you 'melee' attack just felt weird.
But I got used to it knowing there was nothing I could do about it.
I try not to let 'one' thing sway me away from a game I would otherwise enjoy. I missed out on so many good FPS games back in the day because I hated FPS. JUST because I couldn't see my character, I'd automatically hate the game and disregard it as anything I would be interested in. It took COD4 (actually R6:V) to get me into really 'playing' FPS for what they are.
I still think its sort of awkward having a button combination just to shoot, but I believe MGS4 is gonna be the same way, so I figured I might as well get used to it cuz I'm DEFINITELY not gonna let 'that' hamper my MGS4 experience.
On another note, I also fell in love with the interface and options.
Hell, even the gunshot and the subsequent controller vibration (Dualshock 3 owners know what I'm talking about ;D ) made me think to myself... "whoa..."
I hope when it comes out, they've fixed all the little things that were problematic, but I have faith (even though they're running out of time) that they will.
Hopefully you'll give 'em another chance once you beat MGS4. It honestly just takes a fair amount of time to understand the way the game works and what you need to do to succeed. The game would greatly benefit from a better tutorial, ensuring people actually USE the S.O.P. system AND the Skills, and urge people to use mics in team based modes...because people REALLY weren't.
Either way, I'll definitely be spending a lot of time in MGO during the summer cuz really there's not much else coming out except NG2 and I haven't even beaten the first one...it's almost too difficult for me...and I'm not really interested in Disgaea 3.

i agree with AlterEgo 100%
MGO is really a game that you have to put some time in. the game rewards players for the time they put in. and after initially getting frustrated with having an inaccurate shooting, slow-moving player, i upgraded my skills and fell in love.
i really think it'll get alot of playing time from me and i'm still not much of an online player. i played CoD4 once online and hated it, GTA4 once (so far) and liked it, MGO a lot in these two weeks and have a whole new feature of MGS4 to look forward to.
@ruibing
i think its the opposite for me. i think playing in the beta is really gonna help me when MGS4 comes out. i got the controls down to a science.

1.8 - cool @ scottie
it seems like MGO is really a love it or hate it type of game so far
It honestly just takes for you to go into it with a different mindset of other 'online' games because there's quite frankly nothing else like it.
It's truly like learning a new genre from the ground up. It can't be compared to other games because its just not built on the same mechanics, rules, or principles of other games.
Maybe the game modes are the same (Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch remain the same as any other game...and Base = Zones), but the battle mechanics are unlike any other.

yeah its definately a "love it or hate it" type of game, but i think thats just MG in general.
i think the thing that really hurt it was being delayed. some people were put off and didn't bother at all, some people still never got in, and others (including myself) were so caught up in GTA4 that MGO was tossed to the back burner even though they really liked it.
i enjoyed it overall and can't wait to see the finished project. i'm seriously debateing on whether to even get SOCOM or not. i don't play much online anyway, so i don't know if having SOCOM and MGO would be worth it.

It's obvious that you know what you're talking about.
However, I just cannot get involved in a game when I don't prefer the button layout. Such a simple thing to throw me off sounds kind of dumb, but it's true. If I can't get along with the controller arrangement, and I can't change it, then I won't like it.
MGO offers a ton of customizations and features. It's obvious that so much planning went into this game. I just can't understand why the controls are so misconstrued. And even though they are, why don't I have the option to change it?
Anyway, I'm definitely not arguing with you. This is one of the most obvious love/hate game relationships in a long time, and i'm stuck on the wrong side sadly.

nah man I'm not arguing
there's plenty games I don't like that everyone else loves (namely Halo) and its not that I'm just a PS3 fanboy...I DO have a 360, although I don't play it much. I never had the first XBOX so I never played Halo or Halo 2, and when Halo 3 came around, its just not my type of game (as I've already explained with the FPS thing)
But I definitely see where you're coming from. I've heard the controls are customizable (in MGS4...not too sure about MGO), but hopefully the option is there. It'd be a shame to miss out.

So being lazy is your excuse for appearing stupid? I'm not saying you are by any means but by typing in that manner, that's in fact what you are implying.
And as a side note, I graduated High School with 2 B's and the rest A's. High School was not hard in the least. And I even took the AP classes my senior year.
Now once you get a taste of Cal. 3, Stats. Differential Cal. on the math side and Programming Languages, Modular Compression, and so on, then you can take about school being hard. That is if you go for Computer Science.
I'm not trying to do a who's smarter match here, just letting you know High School is such a breeze so enjoy it while you can.

MGO was just awesome man. For those who said it sucked, I know why it sucked for u because u sucked ass period at MGO. I thought it was real fun and the stealth was fun on there. I love the fact that when u were sneaking around, u can like move the camera angles around to see or any enemys were trying to creep up or anything. The ability system which is like perks for call of duty is better then call of duty's because they make u actually work for it. I am really going to miss the beta but I know that the final MGO will be better and they may add some touch ups and new levels in the final build. Thanx kojima for such an awesome time with this masterpiece.

MGS4 I'm sold on, I have no doubts it will be an amazing game. However, MGO itself still has some issues to iron out.
+ Great visuals, framerate, effects
+ Great controls
+ SOP system is great
+ It's certainly Metal Gear in Online form
- Slower game speed enforcing teamwork may turn some players off
- Still too much lag for "serious" play
- Body damage too weak, its headshot or GTFO often

My impressions of the beta were as follows:
- SERIOUS framerate issues and inconsistency in certain areas of the maps
- Various controls quirks (cover system unreliability, namely)
That's actually about it for me. The game actually seemed to be fairly bug-free, from my experience, except for a few design issues as mentioned above.

Well, it's there. I don't just "imagine" framerate issues, and it's actually quite easy to tell the difference between network lag and framerate slowdown.
The snow map with the sniper towers had many spots of slowdown, and I made sure I found all of them.
I wandered every square inch of every map and looked in every direction while zoomed and in regular view. There are many instances, in many spots, where the framerate is highly variable.

1.1 - yeah i'm going to have to agree with that...
I played the demo like twice when it came out and have not been back, Maybe I'll check it again when MGS4 comes out, but it wasn't really for me, I play too much call of Duty 4 to be able to get use to it's style.
It's not bad though, I just didn't really like it.
Found other stuff to play instead. -COD4, GTA IV, and GT5p and now GRID (Plus Haze Demo - not going to buy haze but might rent it.) but yeah can't wait to check out MGS4
