A One-Console Future: Pray it Never Happens

Competition becomes even more vital in an industry that is technology driven. It's quite amazing that Moore's law, which states that computing power doubles every 18 months, still holds true. This rapid evolution is primarily driven by competition. People are constantly trying to outdo each other. Consoles typically have a shelf life of about five to six years. What would happen without competition?

1.2 - After all for average gamers its a one console gen.
My point is: Most of us just dont have time or money to get 3 consoles with the last gen inflated prices and the long run features like multiplayer...

Anyway the power of choice is great, it delivers: Fanbois, N4G, and sum good relationships with "other console" budies.

2 - Actually
what they bring up about Moore's law is spot on. How the technology moves at such a fast rate. If you compare the sytems out now with the new tech released in the PC industry it blows the consoles away. Especially with all of the quad SLI setups on GPU's and the newer processors.

If there was no competition the console manufacturer would just milk the lifespan. Releasing games that had graphics well behind the technology standard of PC's. When the consoles hit the market originally the tech is usually already outdated slightly.

The only people that benefit from consoles having a long lifespan are the companies that make them. Over time they become much cheaper to produce = more profit for them. So the graphics threshold of the games may increase a bit, but the games are still way behind the newer hardware available in the industry.

Not to mention there wouldn't be any reason to make new IPs or take creative risks to move consoles. So there would more than likely be more movie licensed rubbish.

Competition is what breeds good games. You have to ask yourself do PS2 games still look good today compared to what is coming out this year for the PS3 or 360? I don't think so, just a small example. Without competition there would have been no reason to release the 360 or PS3.

3 - There will always be a reason to release new hardware.
Competition would not stop with 1 console. I think it is very foolish of people to think that just because 1 console is out that every developer would suddenly stop trying to make good games and would not compete with each other. I also do not understand how a 1 console future would suddenly halt any new Ip's.. Thats just too silly to even have any merit in reality..I see it working much the same way PC's do today. Anyone can make a PC but it is up to the game dev's to make the good games and they still are today. It hasnt hurt PC gaming at all so it would not hurt if it happened to consoles. It would benefit everyone far more than it would hurt.

He never said that it would stop, rather it would not be forced to get better. If you can not see why competition is overall better for the industry then well I can't help you.

7 - now this is a dumb story
impossible. business doesnt work like this. did a child write this article? besides the fact this would destroy the gaming industry it is just simply IMPOSSIBLE. look at what happened with shaq and kobe. sony and ms would never coexist together as one.

The real problem isnt the market divided among three consoles , the real problem is with devs playing it safe , in a scary "pc like way" .

Used to be that a dbz or alladin game on snes and megadrive meant two completely different experiences , because of the hardware differences forcing teams to get creative and optimise their game .
Now again some devs just do a single game on a given platform , then downgrade it , if needed for another platform .

When has ever EA properly used a 360 , ps3 or even wii ? When will ubisoft do it as well ?

A far to high % of wii games are just ps2 ports , when its obvious the console is far ahead power wise .
Why should their ps3/360 games looks so identical when they dont even exploit fully any of both console and each of their inherent advantages , but merely stay in some middle ground ???

Again its the 3rd party devs that are holding back for their business shenanigans ...
Snes got super mode 7 and megadrive doesnt ? So be it the snes version will use it , the megadrive version wont ..
ps3 got blu ray ? then the ps3 version would try to use the format , even with lame bonuses , instead of releasing a game identical to the dvd version on 360 ...

I wanna release prince of persia on ps2 and wii ? Then i fricking do a wii version , not a ps2 port with wiimote controls ...

I think there is a plus side and a negative side to competition. Sometimes there is too much growth w/ not enough developement. Devs spend years working on software engines and then when they finally start to perfect them another console comes out.

Fact of the matter is that console cycles overlap each other.A console might last 5 years but its not delivering on its hardware the whole time. Consoles really don't start using their full potential til 2 yrs after they come out. Look at how many games take 3 or more years to develope. Games being developed right now wont make it on out this gen. Some will be released at the beginning of the next gen when they wont be considered as "revolutionary".
