Microsoft, Sony Play Console Sales Number Game for Europe

Sony say PlayStation 3 total sales surpass Xbox 360 in Europe, Microsoft refutes claim

The Xbox 360 has an undeniable strength in North America, but Microsoft's hold on hardcore gamers isn't quite as strong in other parts of the world. The Xbox 360 might as well not exist in Japan, but the console is doing okay in Europe.

Sony Computer Entertainment European chief David Reeves proudly announced to the media at the PlayStation Day conference that sales of PS3 have surpassed the Xbox 360 in Europe.

"I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3," Reeves said, adding that there are now more than 5 million PS3, 12 million PSP and 48 million PS2 in the territory.

"These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures," he commented.

It's a legal thing, you can't lie to shareholders and the public in relation to sales numbers. If you do give numbers, they have to be accurate.

Sony don't lie, but they sometimes say "shipped" instead of "sold" and that's legal, because they aren't lying.

6 - Microsoft has been caught using Shipped instead of Sold figures before.
Nintendo and Sony strictly use Sold to customer figures, simply because that's all that actually matters. When PS3 had shipped 4 million units, but only sold 2.3 million to customers (according to Sony themselves) we knew the console needed a serious push.

Good to see the PS3 maintaining its monthly hardware lead.

7 - Who is right and who is wrong?
No one can say. The only means we can estimate the real numbers is by looking at NPD, Chart Track, and GfK. Granted there is truth to both sides, Sony and Microsoft spin sales data in favor of their respective companies. The article is more of a he said/she said than proof that one is right and the other wrong. If you want to sound biased and naive, believe exactly what either camp wants you to.

because did'nt sony say that it was going to pass microsoft in europe by the summer? sony i'm sure sony would'nt have said it was going to be that far down the line if they saw sales trends pointing towards......NOW to pass the 360.

but at the same time, i'm wondering if that microsoft rep meant they have a 1million lead in the UK.

It's very possible there's been a huge sales boost with the GT5P bundle and what not.

this is not a suprise, north america will soon be sold to the ps3, i wonder why we in europe like ps3 better than the 360 even with its £150 price tag and i have no idea why the 360 looks like it does not exsit in japan, any way i guess ms wil do a 360 for £99.99, lol......if price cut is not helping i guess gears of war 2 will help cuz i know i am getting a 360 when gears of war 2 comes out,then when i am finish and done with it i will keep it in my closet till halo4 or gears of war 3 comes out....hahahahahah, but till then i am havin fun with gta4 and i cant wait till MGS4

I thought Sony wasn't competiting with MS or Nin. Where did he get his 16months lead btw? MS had massive supply issues when it launched in Nov2005. Few hundred thousands were shipped in US and Europe got a few 100k in feb or march. I remember chking out ebay and the prices were sky high but finally found one premium NTSCJ model from Hongkong in Jan 2006. 360s finally got a steady supply in Europe by march 06, so Ps3 is almost 12months behind 360 in Europe.

And someone above mentioned Sony doesnt lie. Grow up man, they publicaly lied to the whole world with their CGI KZ2 trailer, the game wasn't even in any form at that time. And lets not get into the 2 hdmi, 120fps etc, cuz we all know what B$ they spun.
