Sony on The Way Back? - "no surprise" that the PS3 is now ahead of the 360"

"Sony's declaration that sales of its PlayStation 3 console have now overtaken the Xbox 360 in Europe will make for uncomfortable reading at Microsoft. I've been chatting with games consultant Nick Parker, who told me that it was "no surprise" that the PS3 is now ahead of the 360."

As far as I know, Ps3 passed 360 in Japan when it lauched leaving only the wii as a competitor in Japan. With the recent SCEE event, the Wii is the major competitor in Europe and 360 is hanging in there.
Here in the US, things are completely switched up.

So I think is safe to say that, its coming back in two territories and one still remains a major battleground for Sony.

I see this as a good metaphor of war. You can own the land (America), but you still lose due to the sea (Europe) and air (Japan).

If Sony really pulls it off it will be quiet a comeback...

you could make the greatest system in the world but if it malfunctions at the rate which 360s malfunction it's not a wonder.

Halo 3: great game. Classic game.
Gears: Very great series. Loads of fun.

But if your system isn't working you can play any of it.

Congrats Sony but don't get overly confident. You haven't exactly been perfect this gen. The PS3 is ready to explode it's full of so much potential but there are still some things-Home, in-game xmb, etc-that have questions around them.

As great as it may be I don't see LPB as a system seller - to fork out the price of a PS3, the mainstream will be enticed by something much more flashy, like Killzone or Motorstorm, or God of War.

4.2 - Actually, you'd be surprised how enticing some of these quirky games are.
Titles like LBP are meant to draw the gamers who technically don't own a PS3 yet, but aren't into games like Resistance or Killzone, or even Grand Theft Auto and Devil May Cry. Singstar is a good example of a non-traditional game that sold millions of copies. I would never touch it, but I know other people who love that sort of stuff.

Xbox 360 experienced 1 'Halo effect' last year which rocketed 360 sales.
PS3 is going to experience numerous 'Halo effects' this year AND next year. And its been outselling 360 before any of these 'halo effects' have come. You, you see that? Wha...what is that? ...Oh its the ps3 beating 360 in overall sales coming right up

1) The PS3 is following the same general pattern as the PS2 did.

2) The PS2 is still selling.

3) The PSP is selling great.

4) The PS3 has the best upcoming lineup.

After the PS1 and PS2 I don't know how or why people decided to start doubting Sony last year, but those doubters are sure looking foolish now.

its like a writing on the wall,ms always new this will happen one day, £150 for a 360 and its still gettin out sold, ps3 is the hardcore gamers choice for europe and japan now, it just remains america and no doubt that will surley happen if things keep going like this, dont get me wrong i aint a ps3 fan boi but i just find it amazing how 360 hard a hole year head start and it still could not stand its ground,360 has not even gone close to 1 million in japan, when ps3 reaches the £200 and £250 price tag the competion will be over, im not saying 360 will be the next dreamcast, wtf i LOVE the 360 and ps3 but all i am saying is 360 will be in last place at the end of the so called console war, as long as 360 has gears of war 2 coming out it has one customer here thats goin to by it, but right now i am havin fun with my ps3.

Didn't really say too much in it now did he? A lot of people out there have always felt that Sony's experience in producing consoles would eventually rise them to the top.

Trust the US to be the odd ones out again. It doesn't matter what evidence, proof or facts are put before the US, they'll read it what ever way it's put to them, without question.

if you count the still selling ps2 and psp, the playstation brand never really left the top. PS3 being all sony has to offer is a misleading illusion MS and Nintendo would like you to believe. There are still ~120,000,000 PS2's out there, and several million PSPs. The PS3 is just the up and comming champ.

The PS3 is selling at the same rate as the PS2.

There was also a console that launched before the PS2 and had a 10 million headstart and all the dev support and easier development and no new disc media to jack the price up and a better online service.

It was called the Sega Dreamcast

That the movie companies, that make movies, and whos entire trade is movies just took sonys word for it on the bluray thing. Im sure the rediculous price of bluray movies has nothing to do with the attach rate (now that the novelty has worn off). But wait, dont we only buy ps3's for the movies? What? So if we are not buying the movies now, and its still outselling the 360, we must be buying it for games right? Or maybe as a glorified mp3 player? come on man. Come up with something.

Oh and gt didnt break any sales records? When was the last time a "demo" as you people call it sold that well. When was the last time a demo was actually sold?

Sony need to stop delaying their big hitters? Sony is delaying at least one big hitter because they simply have too many coming out this year.

The ps3 will never sell the numbers that the ps2 did? You realise that its actually selling faster than the ps2 did?

You know, if i had your time machine id be getting lotto tickets so that maybe, just maybe you can afford to have a team of surgeons look at that defective mass you call a brain.

GT5P was a demo. For a demo it sold great. MGS isnt even out yet. The HD market is still pretty small as a whole, and the little bursts of growth have been sale driven. However, in that tiny market, blu-ray won. And this christmas, every retail outlet is going to be pushing people to go HD. And theres only one choice now... Hardware companies are going to compete to sell THEIR blu-ray player, and movie companies will drop prices for the hollidays to get people to buy all the new hits (iron man, indiana jones, etc.) Disc sales and hardware sales are going to be amazing. Oh, and guess what home entertainment console that plays all of the latest HD formats(HDD and Blu-Ray) is going to sell? PS3. If i were MS, i would be very nervous.

However, every company has skewed data. What percentage of people own a 360 in comparison to the PS3?...in Great Britain, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc. Basically, whats good for the goose isn't good for the gander. There is a preference for 360 within Great Britain, Australia, and United States. PS3 seems to own non-English speaking nations. Also, PS3 hasn't overtaken the 360 in software sales. AS long as 360 continues to outsell PS3 in software, PS3 has yet to claim the throne in Europe. If you look objectively, both consoles are doing well within their respective markets. I don't understand all of the pride to do with one console selling more than another. Last time I checked, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony weren't sports teams with cheer leaders.

Its important because of how bad people were bashing the PS3 and saying it was a failure, or that it would never do well and that Sony was done. MS was sitting pretty on top with a year headstart and now they might be sweating a bit. The PS3 has proven itself to be a reliable and quality game machine and is finally getting positive press. I personally like both the 360 and PS3 but I would really prefer my games on the PS3. It still has a way to go in the US, but slow and steady wins the race.

yep, it was inevitable, we all knew it was going to happen. micro$oft didn't stand a chance after halo 3, the ps3 has got loads of titles to come. all the 360 has is Gears of War 2. ps3 has killzone 2, MGS 4 and LBP to name a few. sorry micro$oft, you hve been beat.

16 - PS3's being making a comeback since 2007, when it outsold the 360 by 1.5 mill
Since then it hasn't stopped and it's closing the gap really fast.

I dare to say that this holidays, the lead will shorten to 3 million or less.

I remember all the cr@p that xbox fanatics spewed on this site about the PS3.. My GOD they were like little hyenas polluting the threads.

Now they seem to appear every now and then with a little nonsense, but most of them are standing straight because they have been slowly swallowing every word as they see the console they daily trashed, retaking what was their in the first place.

if sony can maintain a fresh portfolio of games coming to the platform in which they are, with GT5pro, HAZE, and a few games coming in the likes of wipeout HD, and MGS4 all coming very soon and all after the GTA 4 affect. than sony can easily maintain their lead in this territory.

a good price cut in place for the fall when euro favorites like motorstorm2 and resistance 2 come out will help boost sony's numbers even more, just think socom: confrontation, little bigplanet, infamous are all games that will move units specially in Europe.

now i know some of you here would probably disagree with me but blu ray has a role in all this recent success as well, now i think if sony and co. can give the movies and players a good price reduction by the time movies like iron-man, dark knight, and a few others comes out on blu ray than things will get even better from there. by Christmas time im sure we will see these films and the Bourne trilogy along transformers all in time for a wallet beating.

personally MGS4 alone will inflict a lot of damage to microsoft's market down there, its just a matter of time and yes even ninja gaiden will get run over, the sales have never been in its favor just look it up, also lets not for get the hype MGS4 has been getting all these years along is overwhelming. in this battle metal gear solid 4 is just like GTA4 in this sense and ninja gaiden is more like project gotham, you know a good seller but not enough to warrant a big boost in console sales.

and although i know its not fair to compare two completely different games, its fair to acknowledge that its no coincident that ninja gaiden 2 release is in the same month of june to try and stop MGS4's momentum. which is somewhat smart but at the same time is suicidal, in terms of stocks and sales.

another scenario heavenly sword vs. halo 3? that didn't hold much water for sony so.. here in june we got the same thing going on. and what do you think is going to happen? enough said.

and all although the U.S is bigger than Europe, one most look at other parts of the world like Spain thats all sony and in Australia things are changing all the time so..soon the whole UK will slowly convert that is if sony plays its cards right than the UK will fully become sony land tipping the scale in sony's favor in both sales and landscape because hey anyone who's seen a world map could easily tell you that the UK is quite big in terms of size and population and if sony plays their cards right than believe it the U.S wont mean much anymore. and so far as far as sales are concern that is slowly happening first Europe and than the rest of the united kingdom.

Sony sold 127 million and counting PS2's.

The 360 has only sold 19 million in its 2.5 years on market.

Obviously those 100+ million PS2 owners didn't run out an buy 360s, and its absurd to pretend like they're not potential PS3 owners who will upgrade at some point.

I am sure you were on this site last year when almost everyone was bashing the PS3. I am not talking about fanboys but professional journalist and industry vets that were saying the PS3 is a huge mistake. Stuff like cell is a dud and blu ray is not needed or the PS3 is dead in the water despite the fact that it was only a couple of months old.

I remember the old days when I bought my PS3, all over the internet the rumour was that PS3 would be a soon dead platform and that MS would have the whole gaming market at their disposal. Yet look now Sony has made a comeback and from now to this time next year we're expected to get many exclusives including the highly anticipated sequel to a killer game that was a launch title for PS3 and yet would kick MOST FPS games butt these days: Resistance 2 along with other titles such as: Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet+ PS3 is fighting it out.

is variety and creative gaming and SONY delivers. Little Big Planet (SONY), Resistance 2 (Exclusive), Metal Gear Solid 4 (Exclusive), Gran Turismo 5 (SONY), Hot Shots Golf (SONY), Siren, Resident Evil, Haze (Exclusive), Soul Calibur IV, Killzone 2 (Exclusive), Tekken 6, etc. These are all system sellers and A+++ titles. Not forgetting Home and Folding project.

Look at the genre.....SONY has all the main genre so well covered. They even thought of getting gamers' help to find cure for cancer patients. Now, PS3 has contributed more than 2-petaFlops in folding project.

Their in-house team has really invested a lot of effort because they're serious in their business. Even some of the titles are not developed in-house, they contributed by providing feedbacks to the developers. Not just shoving more FPS in our throat!
