Hardware Failure: My Playstation 2.5

"So I ran into a bit of a snag with my PlayStation 3 last week when I went to pick up Iron Man only to discover my system would not play Blu-ray games or movies any longer. PlayStation 2 games and DVDs run just fine, but Blu-ray just poops out without even trying to read the disc. I had put off calling support in the same way I generally put off calling the doctor, hoping that whatever is wrong will just fix itself (Mike, your arm's fallen off - It'll get better!), but after wistfully browsing the Blu-ray movie aisle at a local retail establishment it was time to make the call.

After navigating the PlayStation support line's various menus and advertisements, I got on the line with a support specialist I will call Denise, mainly because I completely forgot to write down her real name. Denise had never encountered this particular issue before, so she put me on hold to research a bit in between restoring the system's default setting and performing a hard reset. The verdict? My poor little PS3 is dead."

It's all one drive, but it has two lasers (all Blu-ray drives do). The violet laser can't read DVDs, so for DVD (or in this case, PS2/PS/DVD playback), there's also a red laser.

What are you talking about? Playstation 3 has a single drive and a single Laser that reads PSOne(CD-Rom), PS2 (DVD-Rom) and PS3 (Blu-Ray) games. There are numerous reasons his PS3 could have stopped working. He's probably right about the dust on the laser. However, if he smokes, that could kill the system. The fans draw in the smoke and cloud the laser. A Blu-Ray disc has more info to read (or more compressed info) and the laser probably can't focus on it (due to dust or smoke) But it can still focus on DVDs, DVD-ROMs and CDs.

In addition, Blu-Rays, DVD and CDs read and different spin rates. Do you remember the Disc Read Error for Playstation 2? The reason some systems would read one type of disc over the other is because the spin rate slows or changes over time or due to usage. It's just wear and tear. It's also an easy fix (at least for me). If there's dust on the Laser, you just open the system and clean it off with a Q-Tip and alcohol. If it's the spin rate, you have to re-adjust the voltage (under the laser). That's a bit harder.

When I say Laser, I'm mean Laser Lens. The picture I posted is a PS3 replacement drive. Theres no multiple drives or flipping lasers. Everything is a unit, one, uno, ichi.

The drive is either broken or it isnt. It doesnt pick and choose which discs it wants to read.

Well my ps3 wouldn't read crap after the first 2 month's roughly. Sent it in and got it back a few week's later. It has been about 3 month's since i got it back and all of the sudden it ocasionally won't read disk. Exactly how it started first time.

How common is it... do you know anyone that it has happened to? I know at least 4 ppl who have ran thru more than one 360. If it makes you feel better to say its common then go ahead.

In fact the last event Msoft attended, didn't one of the 360's suffer from a disk drive error and it couldn't read any discs?. I know of another one where the 360 on the show floor suffered RROD.

WIth that being said, I think this article is a waste. The PS3 fail rate is FAR LOWER than the 360. I mean I love my 360, but I would NEVER buy a USED one. However, I had ZERO issue or hesitation in buying a used PS3.

Dude, I can see why fanboys from both camps jump on each other so fast, but I sure as hell do not understand why. I guess it just really annoys the crap out of me. Folks talk about consoles like religions. When in reality the console makers could not give a hoot about you or I ... as I long as we give them our $$$. So I find it hard to grasp the DIE HARD attitude some show toward a brand. I am one of the lucky that have both the 360 and the PS3 and can evaluate both for what they really are, as well as the give and understand a personal hands on assessment of what each does well ... and not so well. And like it or not, each has GOOD POINTS and BAD POINTS.

I have no intention of ever giving up my PS3 .... but you know what .... my 360 is not going anywhere either ... ;-)

As I said, in the end I guess I just want to play good games REGARDLESS of what machine the game disc spins in. And the over defensive stance many take on this (and many other) sites tends to get REAL OLD, REAL FAST !!!

The 360 isn't just for gaming...its a multi-media machine.

One of the options included is Fireworks mode, which allows consoles to experience large amounts of heat and breath taking, colourful lights.

It's quite the phenomenon, I can only hope the PS5 will have enough GPU for the lesser mode, Firecracker.

Electronics break every day, but Sony's products are more durable. They have very low failure rates. The failure rate on that thing you call a 360 is inexcusable and spits in the face of every customer out there. Just because there are a few breaks here and there, doesn't mean the failure rate is 99% or something.

I had a ps1 ps2 and ps3. First lets start with the psone. I had the original launch ps1 and never had issues with it. I also still have the slim version of ps1 thats 7 years old and it still works. Ive had a ps2 and the optical drive failed on it ONCE. I sent it back to Sony and they replaced the faulty drive with a new one. I never had problems with it since then. Ive had random errors with my ps3 but nothing ever serious enough to require professional repair. You say ps3fanboys talk crap on rrod when 360 owners are the ones who brung it into the light. Microsoft tried to brush the issue under the rug until it became so common they couldnt ignore it.
