10 Things That Suck About Grand Theft Auto IV

Chris Jensen of InfoAddict.com writes "With game reviewers still mopping up their collective ejaculate, you'd think GTA IV was the greatest game of all time. The amount of hyperbole showered on Rockstar's game was unparalleled, with nearly every critic unleashing a string of adjectives that cast GTA IV as the second coming of video gaming Christ. Once the initial euphoria of the graphics wears off, you soon realize that GTA IV doesn't evolve its inherent gameplay beyond that which has come before, and in a lot of respects, significantly less."

I just got an idea to move traffic to my site...make an article about one of the following:

Sony Sucks
MS Sucks
Wii Sucks
MS will win the console war
Sony will win the console war

and last but not least GTA IV sucks

I don't understand these articles. No game is perfect, but this game is damn addicting. I haven't even thought about putting another game in my console since this game released.

1.1 - well it works.
GTA4 is fun, don't get me wrong. I love running people over, pushing people into trains. But, he makes some good points. I just can't shake the feeling that i have done this before. I know some of the missions will copy from GTA to GTA but everything seems so similar. And the money complaint is spot on. R* needs to make sure LA Noire is different and fresh.

It's very addicting I agree and I haven't played anything else since it came out but a fair number of reviews game this game a perfect score and I think these issues deserve to be brought to light because I'd have to say I've experienced some of them myself and it's an issue.

#1 - I agree..there is little value.
#5 - I miss the mini-missions but I don't mind the mini games either
#6 - This has happen to me more than a few times..frustrating
#8 - I just don't see the purpose anymore..becoming annoying.
#9 - I agree
#10 - Agree 200% with this one. I hate it when that happens.

"I just can't shake the feeling that i have done this before"

Well it is something you have done before especially if you played the previous GTAs, so why do people come back?

Cause it works...I know the game is not flawless and no I don't have my head up Rockstar's a**. The game to me delivered more positives than negatives. Granted my tendencies when playing a game are not overly critical unless the game is blatantly bad.

Your right.. I think my expectations for this one were way to high.. This is the first year i have been online reading reviews on new games and systems so based off all those 10s I thought i would get something more.

The game is very good, and i will put lots of hrs into it. I just expected more.

i agree on everything he said. especialy the cover system is so frustrating. and on the contrary to what EVERY reviewer said, multiplayer felt very tacked on. Its a good game..but as soon as i started to do missions for a guy called (sigh) playboy...It was as if i was waiting for it to turn all GTA and get dull.

Finally someone pointing out flaws in this game. It may be addicting but it does not make the game great. Likewise Cloverfield was very entertaining yet it did not win any prestigious movie awards and got rated as an average movie. Just because the game is addicting does not mean its a good game. I am glad someone finally pointed out the many flaws in this game. I do own the game and think it is a good game but to hear is the greatest game ever is just ridiculous.

@above

Just because its addicting doesn't mean its a perfect game or deserves a perfect score. In fact, the author of this article makes some valid points, yet his opinion is immediately questioned because he challenged the almighty GTA.

What about this article is unfair exactly? Or what is off base?

Sadly, this is the state of gaming today. Hype sells, plain and simple. This is especially true about legacy games like Zelda, Mario, Metal Gear, GTA, etc or games by respected developers.

People love these games or the love the games by these developers and immediately build up the game as perfect. Mass Effect, for example, in no way deserved its high scores. The story was amazing, but the game itself is seriously flawed developmentally. But because people loved KOTOR or Jade Empire, Mass Effect was an automatic winner.

GTA is no different and the author points out the game's significant short comings.

Where did I say that addicting = perfect rating. I even said the game is not perfect in my first post.

I just don't understand why someone wouldn't have done an article like "The good and bad of GTA IV" instead of "10 reasons why gta sucks" see the difference, plus it is more balanced approach as well.

because the good points of GTA4 have already been told .. to death .
By most of the general video games "journalists" and "critics".

What you say is that its seemingly perfectly valid to praise the game putting a blanket over the shortcommings, but if you want to write something about the shortcomings you shall not, unless you point out all the good points again and again. Else you end up with flames from the insulted fanretards for daring to criticize the holy game.

well the article does have a point. I went out to the midnight pre-order sale last week and picked up my copy for PS3. You would think that because of the reviews this game is receiving it is some evolution in gaming, but it is simply not that.

Hell, I enjoy the game and I haven't sat in front of my tv since FF7 and played about 5-7 straight hours. But the game itself isn't really any different than GTA Vice City. It is fun as hell, has a great story, and is extremely addicting, but I think the praise is a little overboard.

I've yet to find a cover system worse than this. I had to constantly try to find positions that allowed me to shoot. Another cover system annoyance for example there was a bunch of blockades lined up touching one another, and I couldn't even move from one to the other. Ridiculous.

also, is it just me or do the graphics suck? I own the PS3 version and my friend has the 360 version, I have seen both and think they look identical and at the same time bland and horrible. I pop in assassins creed and I'm blown away at the difference. Also, most of the textures on the buildings and windows are like stickers. This seems like a game that could have been run on the sega dreamcast. Graphics aren't important to me, but everywhere I turn, articles are praising this game's graphics?!?!? If anything praise the euphoria engine.

Spot-on article. The perfect scores really should be revoked.

They really could have made this a "50 things that suck" since they forgot how awful the cars drive, how bad the lock on mechanics are, and how many weapons are missing.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Silellak - 606 days 8 hours ago
9.1 -
The car driving mechanics are a matter of personal taste. They don't "suck".

What's wrong with the lock-on system? Yeah, I still occasionally target the wrong person, but I also have FREE AIM, which is a huge step over other GTA's. This GTA made combat FUN - and that alone is a big deal. I rarely have fun with a sandbox game's combat system. It always feels watered down compared to a full-fledged action game. See: All other GTAs, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed, Saint's Row. GTA4 is the first time I've loved the combat in a sandbox game.

What weapons that the game NEEDS are really missing? Sure, the katana and chainsaw were fun, but do we really need them? We have all the important ones. The incredible physics when you fire an RPG make up for the loss of any other weapons.

The driving mechanics are awful man, seriously, they're too clunky and you spin out far too much at slow speeds. Even Crackdown had better shooting and driving mechanics, and the streets were roughly as tight-cornered.

Oh, and they're missing the Chainsaw, the Katana, and the Brass Knuckles...some of the greatest parts of other GTA games.

Sounds like you're still caught up in all this hype bull-sh!t so why don't you stay out of stories like these until you get your common sense back, hmm?

You're right. Because I disagree with you, I must:

1) Still be caught up in the hype

and

2) Should not discuss GTA4.

You know what? Get over yourself. Your opinion isn't the only one. Sorry if I don't think a few melee weapons were the "best parts" of previous GTA4s, or if I think comparing the driving or combat in GTA4 to Crackdown's is laughable.

Crackdown was, for me, an average game, at best.

He makes some stellar claims about GTA-IV and yet people claim he's trying to divert traffic to his site.

Talk about journalistic integrity ? Yup, how about IGN securing an exclusive review two days before the NDA or do you seriously believe no money was exchanged for a higher score ?

GTA-IV is the second coming of Christ but it does have flaws and no game deserves a 10.

Congraglutaions R*, you made an adult game that only appeals to people with the maturity level of a 12 yr. old. Little kids can live out their adult fantasies. I'm an adult, if I want to drink or go to a strip club I don't turn on a videogame.

All technical aspects aside, GTA4 is just a glorified last-gen game. They have not only failed to innovate the gameplay, this game actually offers less to do than its predecessors.

I have a feeling that this has something to do w/ the limitations of the XBOX 360. The devs at R* have admitted themselves that GTA San Andreas actually had more content.

Now what has changed since then? Both games are held to the 7gb DVD standard. Fact of the matter is, it requires a hell of a lot more coding to achieve the improved Graphics, AI, and Physics so in turn this leaves less space for actual content.

360 owners can gloat all they want about DLC, but the truth is that if MS had enough foresight to address its lack of storage space then you would probably be getting that DLC with the initial game at no extra charge.

You children can disagree w/ me all you want but you wont come up with a better arguement.

Wow, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

You know the DLC doesn't just appear out of thin air, right? They're STILL MAKING IT. Unless the game was going to be delayed another 4-6 months, it wasn't going to be part of the original disc - DVD space limitations aside.

Speaking of space limitations, DVD's hold 9 gigs, not 7.

Finally, the reason for a 'reduction' in content has to do with the fact that this is an entirely new engine. San Andreas was the third game to use the same engine, so by that time, Rockstar had to spend a lot less time on engine tweaking and could spend a lot more time on adding tons of features.

This is a next-gen game, with a new next-gen engine, and some things had to be sacrificed in order for the game to come out sometime before 2010. Did people REALLY expect all GTA games after San Andreas to continue to increase in size and feature numbers? Every generation typically requires a new engine - which requires subtantially more development time.

@14.1

Seriously, dude, get over yourself. To not like the game is perfectly fine. To insult people who do like it is just sad and pathetic.

You bring up a great point actually. I love how everyone is calling this an "adult" game when everything about it just screams teenage boy fantasy! I mean even the narrative feels like it was written by a 15 year old who wants to get laid way too bad.

That being said, I still really like the game (9/10 for me). I am just perplexed by the glut of perfect 10 scores for a game that obviously has its flaws (I can't believe a couple reviewers actually praised the voice acting too! I want to shoot myself in the head whenever I hear Manny [the streets!], Roman, Lil Jacob, Elizabeta, Mikael, etc... talk. Brucie, Player X, Duane and a couple others are alright).

y'know i've gotta agree.

they've gimped the driving.

flying out of your car as you crash into something is very annoying. Don't the cars have seat belts?

driving the motorbikes is a joke, crash ever so SLIGHTLY into anything BAM you fly off. It got ridiculous just now as i was playing it, my motorbike flies up lands on me and kills me.

there's no real sense of a universe anymore.

In san andreas you're impetus for travelling to the second island was awesome, and what you found there was also awesome. People in the game had aspirations that you cared about.

NO Planes

seriously the F***, i understand kinda why they didnt. But then don't have BIG passenger planes. I doubt people would get that pissy about fighter jets

Gangs

anyone who's played san andreas will remember how fun it was taking over territories. What i hoped was that they'd carry that on and make it even better.

weird stuff has been removed that makes no sense? where are the rampages? where are all the crazy weapons?

You can't have a fun "i'm gonna kill everything now" moments anymore. the police have gone crazy. and with the gimped way niko fires weapons in cars (on the 360 controller it takes AGES to start up a weapon

another thing they utterly raped the radar. When the police chase you the dots get crowded on the radar, and the flashing light just distracts and you can't see a damn thing.

Trading fun for realism has made the game a LOT less enjoyable than san andreas. i wish this gta 3.5 game came before san andreas. And san andreas was the next gen game. god that'd be awesome

lastly the voice acting and the characters + radio talk shows have all downgraded
remember the "welcome to the jungle" adverts for san andreas and it'll probably remind you why you really and truly prefer that.

DEFINITELY NOT 10/10
not by miles

I b*tch about it but i know i'm gonna put an hour in it right now lol

"Speaking of space limitations, DVD's hold 9 gigs, not 7"

check your facts, xbox360 DVD's hold a max of 7.4GB due to the added encryption that is the core of the nonworking copy protection.

and the Author makes some rather fitting claims. Money IS pointless, you can't spend as much as you earn. The socializing is an afterthought, at max. The clothing interface does suck. And the phantom traffic is a real pain.

The part he forgot is the forced mobile call feature that happens to kill you after several missions while people shoot at you and you are FORCED to walk unarmed while the retard on the phone talks and talks and talks .. "hi i did the mission *BANG ouch* and i thought i have a little chat with you *ouch* so ill walk in between the remaining gangsters and die .."

The he is right about the money part lol i got So much money but to spend it on what??? No places to buy etc. I spend most of my money on medical bills when I die then on things to buy.

Also the cover system couldve been slightly better letting you able to move around corners etc. you have to un cover then recover on the proper object kind of annoying when under heavy fire.
