Hirai: 'We're not competing with Microsoft or Nintendo'

Forget Microsoft and Nintendo – PS3's content can take on movies, TV and the web in the battle for the wider entertainment space.

That was the message from SCE president Kaz Hirai as he spoke to MCV at this week's PlayStation Day, at which the platform holder revealed a string of triple-A titles and online community projects.

See I've said this. Sony is on their own schedule and you can tell they think so. This is why their console is still 2 times as expensive as the Wii and 360...but selling so well.

Micrsoft wants to blame Sony or something for their consoles selling like garbage but Sony is just doing things at their own pace. If Micrsoft can't sale consoles that's their problem.

Sony will cut the price when they want now... they are at huge advantage over Micrsoft.

The Aaron Greenburg interview was the most PATHETIC, Threatened sounding garbage I've ever heard. Microsft are scared now. You could hear it severely in his interview.

This is how Sony would answer.

"Sorry, Microsoft.. we aren't on your little schedule. We will sale consoles at our pace and price and still reach 100 million over the years."

Sony's brand is by far the most powerful. The know it. The next price cut to 300$ will be huge for the PS3. That Greenburg interview was truly unprofessional and PATHETIC sounding.

I hate sore losers. They had EVERYTHING in the world in their way.... The 360 is still defective, HD DVD players sold already obsolete. They want to be mad at Sony... and just pretend like they honesly thought they could just come steal all the Playstation buyers....with what?? The Micrsoft brand name!! hahahahhhaha

Get over it Microsoft. Your console is unwanted garbage.

I wonder how did they manage to sale 18 mill consoles already.

Sony should improve its marketplace and online features (home) ASAP to finish this competition.

They've has almost 3 years 2 do it. No competition the first year. And now the Xbox 360 is the cheapest console on the market...even being 200$ in Europe and still comes in dead last.

Make sense to you?

Did I say there are no games? I don't think so... but I'll say it now. PS3 still has the least games worth getting.

Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president: "With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day."

Yeah, Sony REALLY doesn't care about Microsoft at ALL. And insulting another company is DEFINATELY a sign of desperation.

Right?

"Get over it Microsoft. Your console is unwanted garbage."

Actually, millions of people clearly want it, because that's how many people have bought it. See, there are some of us out there who buy a console because we enjoy its games, not because we have some blind loyalty to our corporate overlords.

"2 times as expensive as the Wii and 360"

Wii = $250 * 2 = $500
360 = $280 * 2 = $560
PS3 = $400

Wow, your math is a bit off there, champ. Is there anything you aren't wrong about?

You guys eat this crap like dirt.
They aren't competing with Nintendo and MS but...

They release a electronic device that plays about 75% of the same games as MS' consoles.
They have an online infastructure set up to play said games like MS.
They revenue is driven from sales of software shipped and sold in the same location as Ms' and Nintendo.
The system plays games via a contoller just like MS and Nintendo.
The devices requires a Tv, just like Nintendo and MS.

Clearly, they aren't competing with Ms and Nintendo :

Actually, if any system could be defined that way, it's the Wii.

Love it or hate it, it's significantly different than either the 360 or the PS3. The 360 and PS3 share much of one another's game library, and their controllers/approach to online gaming/etc. are very similar.

That's why people mostly refer to the console war as 360 vs. the PS3. The Wii is off doing its own thing, many of its sales being casuals who may not have otherwise bought ANY system this generation.

Me? I just love Boom Blox.

Reality check. Yes you are. Why are you focusing on movies and TV's? Why not games? You give us firmware after firmware tweaking the BR playability but where are the firmware updates we need e.g. in-game XMB?

I have to respectfully disagree Meus. Why not focus on movies and BR? It's a BR player. They also give us firmware that allowed for multiple downloads, A new PS Store, the information bar, Gaya visualization, improved browsing, and on...

They can't react to every little thing Microsoft does. Steady path. Same thing they did when the Xbox was introduced.

I was just about to say he should concentrate on games first and forget about all of the other stuff. Even when Playstation wasn't known and all it had was a CD player, it was the games that made Playstation what it was. Even when PS2 was a DVD player it was the games..sure it was a cheaper DVD player too, but people felt the same way about DVDs as they feel with Blu-ray right now, but it was all about the games. It makes me mad everytime there's a new FW update and it's a new Blu-ray sound codec addition, etc. They're all nice additions, but not when gamers who've bought your system to play games are begging and pleading to bring out another gaming feature. I really hope they deliver on games soon because even though Blu-ray is catching on, everyone knows "Play"station as a gaming system and the mass consumer won't figure out all of the other extra stuff they're adding on and trying to do until much later. I really don't care about a wider entertainment space and Play TV and BD Live...

I'm really kinda mad at this quote lol...you're in competition dammit, now win! It's like...MS and Sony are both trying to do the same thing but differently. Sony has never really won by paying attention to what someone else is doing, so I don't know what's going on over there...we can all debate on who thought of winning the entertainment space war, but I dont know...it doesn't sound like Sony to say they're not competiting and that they're working on so much non-gamer stuff. There's seriously some new people in the Sony offices or they've lost focus somewhere. Sony has been known to be arrogant, and they had every right to be with how good their consoles are...and now it's killing me to see that all of a sudden they've become modest and kissing the media's feet so they can have at least one good thing to say about them. Like when Jack Tretton was making jokes to be modest at E3, they're a totally different company now...

Sorry, I'm just ranting lol...but I hope they really turn their attention on gaming because this doesn't sound like the same arrogant but dominant Sony I know, "we're not competing..." sigh*...well they have added some new stuff like the Playstation store, and have shown off some impressive looking games, and MGS4 is coming out soon which I hope lasts until LBP comes, sigh...ok I'm cooled down lol

There is a fundamental difference in Sony's entertainment strategy and Microsoft's. Sony builds devices that provide entertainment in various ways, with various platforms. The aesthetics all the way from the hardware to the UI is thought out, not perfect, but not slapped together either. They want to be a piece of your home entertainment. Microsoft wants to be ALL of your home entertainment. Remember Ultimate TV? Haphazardly slapped together, lukewarm reception and quietly killed. Then reborn as Microsoft Mediaroom with the exact same focus as Ultimate TV. Only now, Media Center and Media Center Extenders are thrown in the mix. Consumer electronics is not their fortay and it shows. They will never be in the position Sony is in, in terms of the living room.

SUP3R - 596 days 14 hours ago
5.1 - Indeed
They're known for quality products, no matter who does or doesn't think so.
Every major entertainment device in our house is Sony branded.
3 Sony WEGA TV's which get thrown out or sold this Christmas and replaced with 3 BRAVIA's.
Our VCR's, DVD systems, Stereo Systems and now BR player is Sony and we've never had a problem with any of them after purchasing.
Delivering A or A+ quality products is their goal and over the decades they've delivered and proven to consumers they know electronics.

Microsoft is software geniuses and have undeniably delivered with LIVE and its' unique functionality. However, Sony as a software brand is still fairly new and they are trying to deliver on the standards of what they've been know for when referenced to their electronics. It might take time, but trying to get as close to perfection as possible always does.

The Lazy One - 596 days 12 hours ago
5.2 - I wouldn't say that...
Microsoft is expanding it's reach with consumer electronics every year. Look at past CES's. They've branched from a business operating system, to a mobile operating system, to hardware and software designed to be used in the consumer sector, to software and hardware being designed in the hardware sector.

They're doing one thing extremely well, and that's tying it all together. Right now, I can go check my XBL friends list on MSN. I can stream movies to my zune (if I had one) from my 360 or PC. I can check my email, MSN, and XBL friends list from a windows mobile PDA. I can download movies and music on demand through my 360.

Microsoft's tying together all the things that need to be; the services. Sony isn't a service based company. It's a product based company. That's where it's going to be hurt the most.

While sony is making an entertainment center, microsoft is streamlining the way your whole life is going to work.

I have to agree. I have both machines, but my 360 library trumps the hell out of my PS3 library. It's hard to not buy multi's on 360 b/c they usually run better & don't require GB's of HDD space to run, but honestly, it's mostly b/c of the integrated frends list, private chat, & achievements.

If Sony doesnt think they can learn something from Microsoft (dashboard efficientcy + EASY to invite friends to games + private chat + achievements + XBL Live) then they are clueless to both casual & hardcore gamer wants & needs this generation.

It's hard to hear them so arrogant when Home isn't here, KZ2 delayed again (a BIG reason why I bought a PS3), now until 02/2009, the aforementioned dashbord & friends list streamlining still ain't here, + although "they'er coming", still there IS a lack of good software & AAA titles when compared to 360. Period. I am sure I will get alot of disagrees for being truthful on N4G, but this is how I feel as a hardcore gamer with both consoles.

I wish they would focus less on BluRay & PR Bullcrap & more on *GAMES* & making PSN & the friends list/invite/chat much more streamlined like XBL. Get off your high horse Sony, you are currently running #3 out of 3 consoles, your arrogance pisses me off when you have yet to deliver on a helluva lot of Promises & you have the nerve to say you "have no competition".

"Forget Microsoft & Ninentdo" = WHAT ? That IS your competition whether you like it or not Kaz, & your company is probably in last place now b/c of this type of ludicrous arrogant attitude!

Sincerely,

Playstation Fan

For anyone that owns both system, it's hard to get excited about Playstation 3. It has a terrible library of Xbox 360 hand me downs. As for Playstation 3 not competing with Xbox 360, PS3 was beaten a long time ago in the entertainment arena. I've been downloading TV Shows, movies and music videos for... what? Two years now? Playstation 3 is to have a 10 year life cycle? It will take them that long to catch up to where Xbox Live and it's library is today.

That is a little conceited I will admit, but I understand what he means.

I only get to use my PS3 as a games machine in the evening when the kids are in bed.
My little girl actually uses it more than I do, but she uses it as a blu-ray disc player.
Every so often I'll use it for watching XVids, and with a replacement 250GB hard disk, I store videos and photos on there too.

The other thing is that I think Home will be bigger than a lot of people expect. I can see it being big like facebook. Not that I'm a fan of these social networking things, but they're usually big. I think selling Home advertisment space will make Sony a fortune and when it integrates with movies and games... ...there really will be no multimedia entertainment competition.

Nintendo has no Hard Disk, DVD, blu-ray or any significant media support and the online is not really worth mentioning.
It is literally a games machine, and an expensive one! (Relatively)

Xbox 360: Live is excellent, it has HDD, it plays DVDs, but no "proper" HD movies. It does HD movie downloads but they are only hi-def in respect to their resolution, they don't have the colour or quality HD DVD had. You may as well upscale DVDs.
I always see Xbox 360 as a purists game machine. It plays some of the best games around, has a huge game library, but as far as multimedia goes it isn't breaking ground.
To be fair it's only the blu-ray drive that puts Sony ahead at the moment, but I think things will change with Home.

7.1 - My friends put a TON of video content on their PS3s
Everything from movies (divx) to home video clips that they took with their cameras and whatnot. There's some nifty improvements that Sony should make for both the Photo and Video sections of the XMB, since that's where the fun is. A video editor would be tight, and they should have more slideshow options for the photos.

"Funny thing is i thought i was buying a gaming system"
Next time you'll do your homework.
That's like saying, i thought the PSP was just a gaming system.

This is what i tell people.
If you want JUST a gaming system buy a WII or a 360.

Again, do your homework people. The PS3 has 2 priorities:
Blu-ray player & Gaming console.
Everything else is a bonus.

Would i be wrong if i bought a 360 just for it's HD-DVD (add-on) capabilities?
Nope.
Just dissapointed cause HD-DVD is dead.
Sony has to juggle.
MS does not.(only if they want to because the 360 is a pure gaming machine)
The PS3 is sort of a hybrid.

EDIT:BELOW
"you better compete or you are dead"
The Wii is not competing with either. But guess what it does?

Kaz, I know you have a lot to brag about. For instance:
1.Playstation won the last generation and will likely win this one.
2.Blu-ray won the format wars and Sony's efforts are paying off

But despite your past victories, don't fold your hands over the comment "Forget Microsoft and Nintendo". The core business of the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and wii is GAMING. Games are the ammunition that will win you this war; so, focus on GAMES and don't underestimate your competition.
