SCEE chief: "PS3 has a better line-up than 360 in 2008"

The PS3 has a "better line-up than the Xbox 360 in 2008", according to Sony.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com following his presentation to media at PlayStation Day in London last night, SCEE chief David Reeves said that he didn't believe the Xbox 360 was a sinking ship but revealed that Sony had a "really good Christmas coming up".

When asked if he thought the Xbox 360 was a sinking ship, Reeves replied: "No I don't think it's a sinking ship. I think they have contributed amazingly to the growth of the industry. And I think we have done exactly the same. We don't criticise the competition because we are all in this industry and the only way you can do it is to actually bring more consumers in. So I'm not going to criticise them. All I'm saying is that I think that when we look ahead I think we honestly have a better line-up on PS3 than they probably do on Xbox."

1 - That was actually a really partisan and diplomatic comment.

Much nicer than the mud-slinging and chest-puffing that often goes on from Redmond. He acknowledged the success of his competitor and their contribution to the industry AND managed to sneak in a little stab.

David Reeves is quickly becoming one of my favorite faces of gaming. He sort of blurts out whatever comes to mind before his handlers can stop him.

If you are going to give "respect" part of the way then you might as well go all the way or it isn't "respect" at all. Sony saying they have a better line up isn't respecting the competition.

To say that the PS3 has a better line up in 2008 is wrong. End of story. The real people that should be commenting on PS3 vs Xbox vs Wii wars are the ones that actually own all 3 consoles and can make a valid argument. I own all three, and from where I stand, the Xbox is my most played system and will continue to be through 2008. Gears of War 2 will be the next big thing in video games. So far, I've been very disappointed with my PS3. And now that word has come out that MGS isn't what they want it to be due to hardware restrictions on the PS3, leaves me very VERY disappointed.

Shout, scream, kick or spit on each other all you want. To say that PS3 > 360 in 2008 is just plain false. Support your 1 and only system, 360 has the better line up this year.

I PERSONALLY think PS3 has a better lineup, but 360 has a good one too (I am a multi console owner).

PS3: Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, MGS 4, Little Big Planet, Disgeae 3, White Knight Story, Valkria Chronicles, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, Infamous, Haze, Siren, Socom Confrontation, Singstar

360: Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Gears of War 2, Alone in the Dark, Infinity Undiscovery, Age of Conan, Left 4 Dead, Tales of Vesperia, Banjo 3

PS3 has lil more notable titles, but I think both will have games pushed to 09 (HOPE THEY ARENT)

PS3: Infamous,White Knight Story (Infamous and WKS have WAY too little info to be coming this year)(Although, more WKS info in Japan than NA/EU)
360: Banjo 3(Banjo has just too little info atm), Fable 2 (E3 we will know I bet),Age of Conan (360 version obviously)

Well, one heavy hitter is already delayed to 2009 (Killzone 2).
Still, PS3 has MGS4 which is it's biggest gun along with FFXIII but that won't arrived before 2009.

Overall, I still believe that PS3 indeed has the better line-up but NOT much better than 360's. (Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 are gonna ROCK!)

You're right. Killzone 2 was announced for 2007, then it was delayed till march 2008 and then till Q4 2008. And now it got delayed. Check the net.
Every site from GameSpot to IGN to CVG is reported that "Killzone 2 is delayed till 2009".

Why does everyone point to only Gears 2 (which is no4 on my most anticipated 360 list)?what about Too Human,Ninja Gaiden2,Left 4 dead,Infinite Undiscovery,Banjo 3,Fable 2 and Halo Wars.Games so far that previews have pointed out to be very good.

There are others like Cry On and tales of Vesperia(Not interested in those anyway), that could be very good games as well.

There are also some unconfirmed titles for 08 but could slip to 09 like Warhound,Dead island,Splinter cell conviction and Alan Wake.

The truth is that since FF13,Killzone 2 and GT5 have all slipped to 09 then both console exclusives are dead even and preference going only too which of the exclusives you prefer.You prefer the PS3 exclusives , i prefer the 360 exclusives (very diverse line up) but just because we prefer one over the other does not make the other worse.

I have a X360 and PS3 and I try not to be a fanboy because I want access to the best each console has to offer, but when you see comments like this, its complete spin, because saying one lineup is better than another is strictly OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I am looking forward to RFOM:2, MGS4, and Killzone 2 on PS3. On X360 I want Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Left for Dead, Banjo 3, Gears 2, Fable 2, and Halo Wars.

So, in my opinion X360's is better, but its just opinion.

Fanboys of either console, will give the Edge to their console of choice. Duhh..I'm sorta with this guy tho, as far as line-up goes.

1. In 2007, all we kept hearing were these PS3 games: MGS4-->LBP-->HAZE-->R esistance 2-->KillZone 2-->Final Fantasy XIII?

--In reality, all we really have that are bound to make an impact, as far as a franchise goes, MGS4-->Resistance 2-->LBP out of them games.

--Remember "these" were suppose to be the HEAVY HITTERS of 2008. Besides that, you have a lot of NEW IP's/Franchises that could just as good but with a big ?'s. I know some claim bias with these games.

2. Looking at Xbox 360's line-up, which was suppose to be "Weaker", but some how, things have gotten brighter for the 360's line-up since them PS3 games will be spread out. I also want "want Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Left for Dead, Banjo 3, Gears 2, Fable 2, and Halo Wars." like this guy.

--Plus I will be getting "multi-player-platform fighters" such as Street Fighter HD, Soul Caliber, Tekken 6, MK Vs DC,and K.I(Please Rare). Of course most of these fighters will be gong to my PS3.(Controller preference)

3. Then you have, RPG games, for which I got my PS3 for, but have been non-existent but the 360 have/will-->kept/keep me afloat with Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remenant(multi), Fallout 3(multi).

So on a matter of opinion and what I play, I'll probably get more games for the 360 this year. Sony's line-up has Weakened IMO. Multi-titles, I'll choose after the reviews and such.

I know I'm missing some games but do really think I gonna have time for all of them? It's expensive owning all 3 consoles.

Yeah I forgot all about Left 4 Dead. It was suppose to be a Multi-platform game but I also keep hearing it will be a Xbox360 exclusive. I have both systems also but I buy all multi-platform games on the PS3 because of free online, but if Left 4 Dead stays only 360 between that and Gears 2 I might have to sign up for Live again. If Alan Wake ever comes out I will have to Rent it also.

9 - Having KZ2 out in 09 is not a bad idea.

You already have R2, i don't think they want to cannablize each other's FPS sales. It makes strategic sense. Even if the game is already done, they would have held it back for a more strategic release I think. Save time to buff up the blemish and start the next project at the same time.

I definitly disagree with you... have you played any of the previous mgs series? So far mgs4 looks amazing! Also are you forgeting that sony has a couple of other heavy hitters such as Resistance 2 (From insomniac so it surely wont disapoint)in September and Little Big Planet (Alows great creativity through the use of user generated content) releases october. I dont know if NG2 will be amazing but I hope it will be because I am a fan of the series but we will never know whats going to happen intill it does. This is all openion PERIOD.

This is my personal opinion but i dont agree, i feel more excited about the xbox 360 line up, NG2, FABLE 2, Too human, gears 2, left 4 dead, banjo 3. All of these are newish IP's so i get a less sense of been there done that, where as all of the ps3 exclusives have been on the ps1 and ps2 so its a case of more of the same (of a winning formula might i add), but in High Def. This is MY opinion and i am not expecting everyone to agree as people have different tastes.

There's gonna be good games on both system this year,

For me its NG2, Left4Dead and Gears2 i am looking forward to on 360 and Resistance 2 on the PS3. (sorry i think MGS4 will be a big cut scene again, I just havent liked them since MGS on PS1)

I think i'll be getting more games for my 360 than PS3 by the end of this year.(Killzone2 in 2009, as long as its got more to it than pretty graphics)

One man's better lineup is another's garbage. Personally the better line up is based upon the gamer's preference of gaming. Personally MGS4, socom, Resistance, LBP for PS3 are looking great for me. Gears 2 will definitely be a must buy for me and i'll eventually get ninja gaiden 2 and left 4 dead if it's any good. So based upon my preference I have more options with the PS3 lineup opposed to the 360. It's not a fanboy issue as I have both but just simple preference. There will be those who prefer the 360 lineup and like banjo kazooie, halo wars, and too human. Too human i'm up in the air on but i'll check some reviews to see if it's any good. But that's how it goes yall. I'm looking forward to both systems lineups but more so PS3 just because their games are more appealing to me this year as opposed to last year where I prefered the 360 lineup. What i'm going to find amusing is the disagrees I am going to get because I said I prefer more so the PS3 lineup. Sometimes people can be so immature.

Banjo? LBP will destroy that, Conviction looks like it took a step backwards. Doesn't some of those games come out in 2009 If that's the case then you got FF 13, Killzone, GT5, God of War, FF versus, Eight days and the getaway. 2008 MGS4! Socom, Motorstorm, White knight Story, Resistance 2, The Agency, DC Universe, Heavy Rain, and Tekken 6.

i have both systems and honestly i am more stoked about the 360 line up the ps3 line up is lacking heavily i mean resistance2 not really lookin for that the 1st one sucked big time i still dont know how it got such good reviews and lil big planet dont know about that yet GT5 has been pushed back to 09 so really sony only has MGS4 this year while 360 has fable2 NG2 gears2 too human and alan wake will prolly make it out b4 09 and thats just the ones i can remember right now so when u think about it of cousre this guy is goin to say they have the better line up cuz im pretty sure microsoft isnt sighning his checks but he knows deep down sony has dropped the ball big time in the video game industry

I own both consoles and tbh I think its pretty even. In fact the three titles im most excited about aren't even console exclusive - Resident Evil 5, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3! Heres what I'm hoping to buy for each though:

Playstation: MGS4, RFOM 2, Motorstorm 2 (Hopefully Final Fantasy 13)
360: Fable 2, Left for Dead, Gears 2, (Hopefully Alan Wake)

VERY EVEN IN MY OPINION

Theres going to be a lot of Fan Boy Bickering this year!

seriously after Gears 2 launches at the end of this year- there doesnt seem to be anything for 360 fans to look forward too

Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 could stay console exclusive to the 360 but those aren't even real exclusives- and they have a pretty good chance of coming over to the PS3

Until the year is over and we can look back on all these games and determine which system had the best lineup? Most of these games are proven franchises, but they can still under deliver or even get delayed. I like how you automatically assume Microsoft has nothing planned for 2009. Since a lot of their games are on a 2-year development cycle, and a lot of their big games came out in 2007, I wonder what that means for 2009? Hmmmm...

MS has 5 development studios (first party if you will)- a lot of those are occupied

e.g Lionhead hasn't even finished Fable 2 yet, you really think they have something in the works for an 09 release

we know that MS are good with 3rd party deals, but how many can they make with the PS3 gaining so much momentum

its becoming harder and harder for them to pay for exclusives

whatever MS can cook up for 09, it certainly wont match PS3's line-up of God Of War 3, GT5, FF13, Syphon Filter PS3, Uncharted 2, LA Noire, RDR2, Twisted Metal PS3, Killzone 2.... need i go on? because i can, for a long time

They don't own Silicon Knights, Mistwalker, or even Bungie anymore, but those companies are making exclusives for them. Capcom kept Dead Rising exclusive,meaning the sequel will probably be exclusive. Outside of Sigma, Team Ninja games will stay exclusive. What impresses me is the fact the Mr. Reeves handled the question with such professionalisim. Shane Kim and many other Microsoft execs can really learn a thing or two from him.

the ps3 does have a better line up for 08, it should because 360 has had 3 great years of stellar lineups. But who's to say the ps3 lineup will meet expectations? What if the games turn out to be only so so? You can not say that all those games you are counting on will be so great. Sure it is possible that they could be, but Halo 3 was not all it was cracked up to be and disappointed a lot of people. Including ps3 fans for some reason. So good luck on that stellar lineup, you have waited long enough I think.

Well, SCEE's Mr. Reeves has just opened a can of worms and left the plate served for Microsoft to counter attack at the many delays Sony has been suffering from since the launch of the console.

Back in 2006 when the PS3 launched, being honest, it's lineup didn't hold a candle against the Xbox 360's. Gears of War was the prettiest girl in the dance and until now it's still being used as a point of comparison of many games. However, this wasn't a surprise considering that Sony's platform was younger and already confirmed to be more complicated to get the most of. Lets keep in mind however, that the development frames between both consoles aren't as far apart as their launches. While the PS3 launched 1 year after the Xbox 360, their development kits were available about 4-6 months after the Xbox 360's.

Few could argue at this point that 2007 was, software wise, Microsoft's year. Virtually every single GOTY nominee in each category featured an Xbox 360 title, say Bioshock, Mass Effect, Orange Box, Halo 3 and the multiplatform COD4, which was also on PS3 but was playable online right out the box on Microsoft's console... hence the big difference in sales.

Sony's response to their fans well justified complains was that 2008 was going to be the Playstation's definitive come back in terms of software, sweeping off the floor the competition, and they had strong reasons for that confidence. Games like Gran Turismo 5, MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2 and a completely overhauled PSN named "Home" sounded like a dream lineup. Unfortunately, Sony has just confirmed that it was indeed a goal they couldn't achieve. While big titles are still being released this year, some of the most anticipated ones are not. Killzone 2, by far the most anticipated FPS by Sony fans has just been pushed back to 2009, Gran Turismo has only been seen in it's extended demo "Prologue" form and won't see the light this year either (running the risk of having to face a new Forza Motorsport), Final Fantasy XIII has even less chances that those had to be released on 2008 and Home was also rescheduled with an ambiguous "will be released when I'm happy with it" tune on it.

On the other hand Microsoft has been extremely silent, almost stealth, in contrast to the marketing galore they had us accustomed to past years. But as everyone in the know understands, when Microsoft does something that premeditated, they do it for a reason. They obviously didn't want their exclusives' thunder to be eaten by the GTA IV juggernaut, on contrary, they wanted to join GTA's hype train in order to sell more consoles taking advantage of exclusive content and superior online support. However, this doesn't mean they don't have the biggies in the kitchen, on contrary once GTA's dust is settled down it will be the perfect opportunity to counter with titles we know next to nothing about but have some of the best background support in each genre. Let me list a few of them:

Ninja Gaiden II: Generally perceived as the sequel of the "best action game ever made", featuring a badder, faster, stronger, bloodier gameplay and made by the whole Ninja Team unlike what happened with its predecessor when they used a secondary animation team.

Alan Wake: All we know about this game is that it features a survivor-horror style, it's being developed by the creators of the legendary Max Payne and according to that old Intel Preview, it features some of the most impressive visuals/physics ever seen in a videogame. Microsoft might have hit a serious winner when they secured this game back in 2006, there's no reason to believe the contrary.

Too Human: This might be the most criticized game before launch in recent memory. A poor E3 show was enough for most publications to bury this game without any future hope of success. Well, it's pretty interesting to see the same people trash talking about it suggesting this might be one sleeper hit after all, and positive previews from the websites that didn't jump on SK's jugulars back then aren't scarce at all. We're talking about the developers of the great Eternal Darkness and the technically impressive port of Metal Gear Solid for the Gamecube.

Gears of War II: How can this game go wrong? It's using a heavily upgraded version of the already excellent Unreal Engine with water, lightning, destruction and other effects that put other UE powered games to shame. New characters, new history, epic battles (now the hordes will be actually hordes, not locust gangs) I believe EPIC has the talent to bring us an even better version of the already excellent Gears of War.

Fable 2: Peter Molyneux must be one of the most ambitious developers to ever work in the industry. He aims so high that his ambition played him a bad move with the original Fable. Don't get me wrong, the game was very good, but when you promises platinum and you bring gold, most people will be disappointed to some extent. This time around however, he has two elements playing on his favor. First, the experience he learned from the past, and second, the hardware has now enough muscle to deliver on his promises. Previews of Fable 2 essentials like the dog AI, battling and the exquisite artistic style are indicators that this might be the game every RPG fan should not miss.

Banjo Kazooie 3: Lets face it, this will be RARE's opportunity to show their real talent. Kameo was a great game, featuring some of the best visuals seen in the console but it was quite short (if you don't consider side quests) and had some weird controls hard to get used to. PDZ was clearly a rushed game to meet the console's launch and while still good, this was noticeable in the final product. Then we have Viva Piñata, an excellent game that just doesn't fit in any category out there and sadly, didn't fit in people taste either.

This time around, they're back to their roots, with all the experience gained with previous Xbox 360 game and some of the most beloved characters in the industry I have serious fate on that Banjo Kazooie might be the game that will definitely reinvindicate RARE. Nobody doubts of their talent, they have just been subject of too many weird experiments and tight schedules. Not anymore.

Splinter Cell ConViction: Assassin's Creed meet Splinter Cell anyone? Ubisoft is aiming really high with this game. The amount of animations and AI variables playing in this game just sounds too big to be true, but Ubi has many advantages here: They aren't focusing on radically different platforms like PS3 and Xbox 360, they have Microsoft support and the game is being created by arguably their most talented studio: Montreal. This one is definitely worth checking.

Halo Wars: Does anyone remember Age of Empires? That fantastic strategy game created by Ensemble Studios? Sure many do. Well, this game is being created by those guys. With a rich world like Halo and some impressive previews this is my personal most anticipated strategy game to be released this year, and that's considering Red Alert is also coming out. For those who don't know about it, there is a preview on gamersyde that was enough to bump the expectations very very high.

This is without mentioning Tri-Ace great looking Infinite Undiscovery, a better looking, better running (read Mark Rein interview) and bigger Unreal Tournament III, Valve's intriguing Left 4 Dead, Namco's beautiful Tales of Vesperia, C&C Kane's Wrath others unconfirmed for thos year like Warhound and the certainty that every single multiplatform game has been either better on Xbox 360 or had very, very slight disadvantages here and there but nothing major as with many Playstation 3 multiplatform games.

Said this Mr Reeves, I consider extremely audacious to claim that Sony's 2008 lineup is better than that on Xbox 360.
