A "new" form of control needed for console games

At the end of the day, it all comes down to having fun. And having keyboard and mouse support would simply make certain games significantly more enjoyable, so it would be nice to (finally) have a choice in the matter one of these days.

PS3 supports mice, it's up to the developer to make it happen.

Doesn't UT3 on the PS3 already have the option to play with a mouse and keyboard?.. ...and when you play online it does match the keyboard & mouse players together and separately the controller players.

Already done. Why the article?

Because ONE game that supports KB+M is not enough.

Really, they dont even have to use a real keyboard since that seems to intimidate a lot of console kiddies. Just a "keyboard" like input. Something with enough buttons to accommodate FPS and RTS games.

I hear a lot of people say "oh, I prefer my gamepad" but that is because they have never really used a KB+M enough to realize how much better it is. I have never once, and I mean this literally, ever heard someone that has ACTUALLY played with a KB+M for more than a week that has not come back and told me they have no idea how they ever enjoyed playing with a gamepad.

Agree with you both, if it came to motion control only, I would either go back to PC gaming or find a new hobby altogether.

Only thing about a keyboard and mouse, is, well, the keyboard. Say in COD4 I want to take out a frag (g), then cook it for a little while then dodge out (d) and back in again (a). It's a little cumbersome and you have to change your hand position to do it. Also, let's say I want to move forwards, but slightly to the right. Can it be done whilst looking forward? No because there is NO analog control whatsoever. The only advantage K&M has IMO is aiming in FPSs.

Haha, yeah right. Almost everyone (except you, please take no offense) can move their hands that fast to control the player in FPS. And you say that FPS is better on consoles? :)

I was about to write a blog post on this very subject. I'm so sick of devs trying to shoe horn controls on RTS games and RPG games it makes me sick. This is next gen so lets not stay in last gen mode. Most games the gamepad does just fine but when it comes to rts and rpg its just not fun. Menu's are the enemy of those games. Plus think how easy it would be to drop a nice MMO on us console folks. Hell port WOW over here and lets have some real fun. If the devs make games to at least have the option to use keyboard and mouse then we would all be happy. I'm sick of people say well you have UT3. ITS ONE GAME! All games in my opinion should have that option. If people don't want to spend a few extra bucks on a keyboard and mouse then thats their option. The PS3 for god sakes has usb right up front so it would be sooooo easy. Come on devs quit being lazy and I bet by the end of the gen you will see and ton of people using the keyboard mouse combo instead of the gamepad. Look for my blog post I have tons to say on this

Intelligent use of the gamepad as a controller negates the need for a mouse and keyboard as FPS games have shown. I started out on mouse and keys with the original Wolfenstein and Doom games. When I first bought a console I vowed never to buy FPS games because they didn't have mouse and keys yet now I buy all my FPS on the console format.

C&C3 on the 360 had a poor controller method, all an RTS needs is an intelligent menu system. Use the analogue to move a cursor, one button to click commands and then have the rest bringing up quick link menu's.

FPS i agree are pretty good at using the controller but your intelligent menu system for RTS is just crap. How many RTS games have they tried to release on consoles? Answer tons. How many have been good? Answer 0. Hell even blizzard one of the greats couldn't even get starcraft to work on console. Why because of the controller. These systems are supposed to be a media hub in our living room. So lets make it happen and get some mouse and keyboard support. Also lets take FPS out of the conversation. FPS can do pretty good with the gamepad. not as good as mouse but good enough. I'm talking rpg and rts. Menus suck lets all just admit this now. Its clunky and makes games play like crap
