DICE "surprised" by "very strong reaction" to Battlefield: Bad Company cash for weapons scandal

Speaking to videogaming247, DICE producer Jamie Keen has said that the EA developer was taken aback by the fierce reaction to plans to charge for weapons in Battlefield: Bad Company, but that listening to the community is paramount for those working on the franchise.

"We were slightly surprised by the strength of the reaction," he said.

"Charged downloadable content is becoming more prevalent throughout gaming, but it's important for us to be able to react to people's wishes and desires. There was a very strong reaction to it.

"For a game like Battlefield, where we've had a very strong online presence, and traditionally we've had very strong communications with the community, it's important for us to be able to react to people. And yeah, we have to listen to people."

"surprised"?

Whats to be surprised about, people don't want to know you plan to rape them with premium DLC when you already have them up and running in game.

And lets be fair, this is EA, any slight slip up will have gamers all over them. They're not exactly an appreciated developer as it is.

1.1 - I'm surprised
It's just NOW that EA is realizing that customers won't stand for their bullhockey. Do they not read game forums, blogs, websites, magazines, and just about every game-centric media outlet? Nobody likes to be charged for things that are already on the game. It's one thing when they made new changes, added new stuff that couldn't fit or were SERIOUSLY time constrained, but not where you make a full game and only give half, basically telling us we have to pay to unlock the other half. Ya, No.

2 - I agree
with you 100% Fishy Fingers. Its one thing to charge for extra levels and missions, but to charge extra for guns. Come on. Something so miniscule as guns should be included in the game no matter what. EA's reputation at the moment isn't anything to brag about. They need to cater more to the gamers instead of the corporate heads in trying to squeeze out as much money as possible from everyone.

7 - Ahh...EA, EA
it's almost if they are trying to get their potential customers not to like them.

You can buy this sandwich but you have to pay to eat the last bite.

I guess somebody buying EA is out of the question right now huh? Dang...

"“Charged downloadable content is becoming more prevalent throughout gaming, but it’s important for us to be able to react to people’s wishes and desires. There was a very strong reaction to it"

Yeah, it's more and more 'prevalent', but that doesnt mean gamers LIKE it. Hell, I HATE all the current DLC scamming BS that's going on way too much, and it's ruining gaming. I boycot games that use the DLC scam.

I buy a game for 60 bucks, and I want the complete game for that money.
If they wanna add stuff later on, fine, that's great... just dont ask money for it!

I liked DICE better in the old days of Xbox, where they did wonderfull things with DLC for Rallisport Challenge 2 (FREE!)

12 - It Depends
I am a huge Battlefield fan. Having to pay extra for new content doesn't bother me to a point. You notice something? I said "NEW" content. Like content they make months later and release. Something they worked Extra for. Such as COD Maps. They spent alot of time on those and I paid for their beautiful work.

Now EA did not. They are charging or were charging for content that is already made and already printed on the DVD. This is what upset me. It's one thing to charge for content you make a couple months later. It's another to charge for content that comes on the disc just because EA thinks they can score a couple extra bucks.

Companies like EA see how Micro transactions are making alot of money. They are trying to take advantage of the common gamer/customer. This is not something new to EA. They will attempt this again with another game. I thank companies like Microsoft and Sony for introducing the world of Console transactions. Just because it gives games a longer lifespan. With every good thing someone tries to take advantage of it and ruin it for everyone else. \

In ending I have stopped buying EA games. besides Spore. I am glad that have decided not to charge for the content but they know people wouldn't buy it if they did now.

sorry but those COD4 are as much of a rip-off , especially at such price .
They worked month for those ? So did blizzard for starcraft maps , wc3 maps , so did anyone for most contents . The upside was there already for them , distributing free stuff to perpetuate a game's popularity online , and then decide others to buy a copy of the game .

Now it has gone to such level of idiocy , that a version of a game is deemed superior , because they allow you to pay for extras...

13 - all this
says to me is that EA employees do not play thier own games at home, they may play them at the office, because if they played them at home they wouldn't have all this dlc nickle diming crap and they would have seen how stupid the idea was

and only after being told how stupid the idea was did they think to change it they knew exactly what they were doing with it and even now they still wont admit that it was a big rip off

all they did was act surprised when people got angry they knew why, what they were surprised by was probably how many of us were/are (i'm not now), buying the game even though it was a good game with destructable environments we would just find something else to play and they were surprised that we couldnt be as easily controlled as sheep not saying they wont get away with it in the future, but for the moment its a victory for us

For the people that already got turned off by that info. I'm not even that interested in the game after hearing about the problems in the Beta. And yeah, EA is famous for charging extra money for "downloadable content", content that is already printed on the Disc.
