PS3 Titles Require Firmware Update
30
Three more launch titles will require a firmware update before you'll be able to play them. Much like what happens with the PSP, you'll see an alert that says you must upgrade to a newer firmware version before playing.
Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7 and Resistance: Fall of Man will all require a system update to version 1.02. The update ships on the disc so that you won't need to be online to download anything, but you should of course be able to update before the games come by hopping online.

2 - Microsoft does the same thing with the 360...
and I haven't heard any complaints about that. Phil Harrison did state that the operating system would be constantly updated and have new features added throughout the console's life cycle, which is pretty neat.

So if i click on your user name i wont find 50 comments that say MS's upgrades are patches due to MS's mistake of not making the 360 powerful enough. Before you respond read your post history.

They are both. You know it. As with the latest 360 update. Fixes and improvements. I expect the same from the PS3. Shouldn't you?

You're missing a big piece here, though. You HAVE to get this update to play the game. Period. The game CANNOT be played without the update. Yes it luckily comes bundled, but will that always be the case? Every single time? Other this console's life?
360's online updates are only required if you plan on taking a game online.
If there were a game that didn't get bundled with its update (or all the necessary updates depending on how it's done and a person's individual attention to updates), you wouldn't be able to play it unless you went online. And even on Xbox 360, not everyone is online.
So the troublesome bit is, theoretically anyway, someone could get screwed with an unplayable game until they managed to find the appropriate update somewhere.
I've worked in game stores, and I've dealt with people who couldn't use random stuff on their PSP due to not updating or having a problem getting updates. Not a pretty thing.

3 - it dont seem like a problem unless
you have to do them for everyother new game you buy. Microsoft only does this a few times a year. It does help with modding and cheating online.

This is a good thing, it prolongs the life of the console. Although i have'nt dared download the latest 360 update. Is it fixed yet? One of my buddies 360 crashed from it, and it was neither flashed or newly bought...

Since the firmware update comes on the disc, I don't see this as any sort of problem.

I can't tell if you were disagreeing with my comments or not.
I was just saying it's not really an inconvenience if the games come with the update you need to play them on the disc themselves, as opposed to having to download or manually installed firmware updates in order to play every new game.

A system these days that can't do firmware upgrades will be left in the dust as the other companies come up with new functionality.

What upgrades do you want. The system not out yet. Man people make something out of nothing. Hey, maybe you should wait until the game comes out before you expect anything.

With the failure rate on 360s each new update, how many failed PS3s are there going to be with a firmware update every month? A lot I bet.

12 - #2.1 power of green II.......
First of all I have to say that I think firmware updates are a good thing because just like a PC its always a bonus when you can "update" software/programs to the latest more efficient version or get even better system features....especially when its free! I also agree that "HOW" the update is delivered does matter, I think a "broad" update like M$ does every few months is the better way to go, instead of having to install an update for each game -but its just these 3 games so either way its not even an issue.
Now the reason your #2.1 post caught my eye was because I had just finished reading DJ's post right above it and I was thinking the exact same thing. lol, DJ makes alot of accusations about the 360, but he contradicts himself alot. Its funny that he even brings up the fact that M$ has regular updates *too* and "I haven't heard *any* complaints"....well read your post history DJ and you will find plenty of complaints.....oh never mind because now that the PS3 will have "patches and updates", suddenly its OK, you were really complaining about something totaly different, right?...'cause Phil has spoken which makes it the gospel. lol

12.1 - I'm not sure what you're getting at.
I haven't seen any 360 owners complain about the updates that Microsoft issues via online, thus I stated what I did. Sony however chooses to be a little more forceful and put those updates on their games, and in a way it makes sense. Instead of solely requiring that customers have an ethernet connection to update their system with brand new features, why not also put that update on the game titles that require it?
Microsoft should think about doing that too 'cause it's pretty neat, and it's already a well-proven strategy on the PSP.
As for past statements that I made, I believe that FeralPhoenix is referring to my critisisms towards Microsoft's behavior of making brazen statements, and then having to contradict themselves in order to keep up with Sony. The only way that Microsoft can play catch-up is through software updates since their hardware was finalized over a year and a half ago.
It's not the updates I was critisizing, it was Microsoft's behavior. It's also important to note that my outlook changes little by little and what I stated X months ago may no longer be congruent with my current views. This happens with everyone and not just myself.
Feral, if you have specific quotes that you want to grill me on I'd be happy to assist you.

Xbox 360 updates are available through:
-Xbox Live
-Some games (i think mostl Microsoft Games Studio Games, but no game requires an update so it doesn't matter)
-Xbox Magazine demo discs
-Downloading to a PC and burning to a disc
-Fill out a form online and Microsoft mails a disc
-Call Microsoft support and request a disc to be mailed

It's the most future proof you can get, i think Sony fans know that!; they were just a little bitter because the wern't sure their console would have the same capabilities.

Some pals and I just got finished checking out PS3 Beyond web site and we checked out everything on that site three times and watching video and looking at pics with a PC hooked up to a large HDTV could not figure out why fanboys are so sure PS3 will rule. I tried to have a open mind and told myself PS3 was better while i checked out the pics and vids and it didn't work. I also thought the way Sony has worded the specs(ect) was funny also. I do see PS3's multi tasking strenths like the background(nice layered tricks) crowd in Heavenly Sword, we'll see what MS's anwser to this is soon enough, that is; if more talented Dev's use all three core's ect.

15.1 - i've taken a lot of trades on them
and it's a pain in the @ss having to sit through an update every time you test one out. why do you need a firmware update for an unreleased game? have any ps3 games gone gold? if you can put the game in and it's instantly there, no big deal. if you have to sit through this drawn out update evry time you buy a new game it sucks.

16 - 360 update only takes about 30 seconds = restart to update
After about 1 mn it is all done and probably already back at the desktop. I LOVE XBOX and 360!!
I have a PSP and like it so far. It is my portable game system so I dont expect it to be anywhere near as good as the 360 or xbox. I only buy games for it that I think are the coolest. Like Burnout legends and starwars battlefront 2 which are only $20 a pop and killzone liberation which reminds me of army men 2 on pc from long ago.
