Game Focus: LAIR Analog Controls Patch Review

The controls are so much better the game has become better to play in every way. You can pull 180 degree turns, dive, claw and fight your away with such ease you will be amazed and it does make the game more fun, much more fun in fact Game Focus will not sell/burn their copy of LAIR and plan on keeping it. But overall it is too little too late for most gamers. Most will not even try the game again and if they do it will not go beyond a rental. Perhaps a demo will be released with the new controls and gamers will give that a try or just wait for LAIR 2.

Bottom Line – Worth the download if you have the game or will rent it. The game is fun, like it should have been in the beginning.

I just rented Lair, and I think it's really good. Well, except for the minor frame-rate and lock-on issues, it's a good game. I'd easily give it an 7.5 - 8.

3.2 - lol, How can a 6month old game be way too late

I hear the same thing alot and it's seems people who say stuff like this just aren't thinking at all.

It's not like you can find a boat load of Lair type games and I doubt the market will be saturated with it in future.

See, the PS3 has only sold roughly 11 million units world wide and even if you're the most pesimistic gamer eva you know it's going to move atleast 5 time more in it's life time (but likely over 10times more) so for all these new comers, they'll be checking out Lair, why? cause their new to the expereince, like Dragon fantasy games and it's not likely you'll have a lot of Dragon type games this gen like FPSs or something.

And if you say "nah, people will ony buy current games" then that's kinda silly thinking cause when the PS3 gets cheaper, all these games in year one & two are going to be cheaper too. The whole reason most will be picking up a PS3 years from now is that it'll be cheaper so you really think they wouldn't buy cheaper games too?

With the patch Lair will likely sell well over a millin in it's life time and this will be good cause then the PS3 fanbase can get a Lair II.. and you know if there's a Lair II it'll drop jaws with it's trailers announcing it and you'll see more of a spike in Lair 1 sales becasue of it, like what happend with KZ1 when KZ2 trailer came out in 2005 and 2007.

Considering how long it took, I'm surprised they even bothered. I was really hoping for all out, multi-player dragon battles, turning the sides of a battle against another player with more variety, but I guess this is the best we're going to get. I'll probably gamefly it again in a year or two once I've made my peace with the controls.

I remember lusting after this game before launch, wishing it was available on my 360...

...and then the game launched, and it was, for lack of a better word, broken...

...and now, they've fixed it...

...which means that when I get a PS3 next year, I will be buying Lair.

I liked the motion controls, if you gave the game a chance they worked great imo!? anyway I think the developers deserve some respect they listened to what people wanted and then delivered it, unlike EA who suck.

tbh its way too late. i may give this a chance, because i like the concept. but why so long after launch? if they did this within a month it would have been a much cleverer idea. but from what i heard, it wasnt just the controls that killed this game.

Hate me if you want, but Lair's Motion control was excellent, it was fun if you know how to do it, not once did the dragon do anything I didn't want it to do.

what I really hate about the game is 2 things: 1- no check points, if you die you have to do the same damn level again from the start and I'm talking about 15-25 min not including the cut scenes. 2- it was short, too short.

I downloaded the patch put didn't try it yet, maybe later too busy playing MGS3.

not a whole lot more. I liked the game originally but the controls kiled it for me. Now Ive tried it again but like "Lord Ash"^^ said if you die you have to do the whole level over again:( The game is not fun enough to make me want to do the whole level over again.

That really pisses me off in some games...the lack of save points.

This gen it is MUCH improved, but I am still wondering why we can't have in-game saves like on the PC.

I did really like the game, but yes the new controls are far more refined. But, I honestly feel it has more to do with the intuitive nature of the controls as most are so used to analogue now.

I pick up games astoundingly quick, so despite being irritated at first, I got used to the sixaxis theme quite quickly and enjoyed it. I can see how most people would hate it though, aside from the Left/Right/Up/Down the rest of the control commands were really not very intuitive.

It was definitely a practice makes perfect control scheme, and I hope people will give it a go again, as the game is rather fun once you can easily control the dragon (even if it requires new controls for you).

14 - i actually enjoyed the motion controls

but after playing the game via Remote Play on my PSP, and then plugging in my old PC controller and playing for a few minutes with the analog controls, i really wished Factor 5 had included analog controls with the game to begin with.

i downloaded the patch, but unfortunately, i traded Lair in a long time ago (i think for Warhawk).

i'll probably buy it again eventually, but it's going to be a while, as GTAIV hits next week, and that will dominate my time until Haze hits in May, which will dominate my time until Metal Gear Solid 4 hits in June, which will dominate my time until i beat it (and then i'll probably go back and play through it again, multiple times).

maybe i'll have a free window in July or something. too many good games coming out to look back (although Folklore is still on my list: i rented it last year, beat it, but never got a chance to buy it. i really want to own that game, it's great, and i downloaded some of the free extras, and i'd really like the new quests and folks).

as for Haze, Free Radical hasn't disappointed me yet, and my favorite game from those guys so far is Second Sight.

Haze will always be on my radar, but they need to release it quick, as too many games are hitting that are vying for my time. Haze will, at the least, be a good time. and that's all i really ask of my video games.
