Ridge Racer 7 Takes 5GB of Hard Drive Space
38
If all games are going to be like this, that means on the low-end PS3 you're fitting four games simultaneously, and that's if you don't download any other content. Let's hope there's a way for end users to put larger hard drives into the PS3, especially if we're going to be installing Linux and playing DivX movies off of it

1 - This is because
some, actually most, PS3 developers are going to be using more storage in the HDD, to speed up the game. Just like that news topic about Genji using Hard Drive to speed up the games loading times and speed up the game, well thats what RR7 is prolly doing to. I heard other games were using it to, but i forget which ones, so yea. But yea, lets just hope not all games will be doing this, cause yea then we'll get faster games, but then we'll only have space for like 3 or 4 games, an no space for downloading stuff.

yeah and how many of those 1080p game trailers or videos are you going to be able to save to the HDD via online? 1 or 2??? crappy I say, total crap. and no room for upgrading at least as far as i have seen.
They should concentrate more on compressing data IMO....
another reason I wont be buying a ps3....

you have the low end version just dont install that onto your hardrive (only install the games you like and play the most) and rely on caching for faster load times, as for the 60 gb version they got it good huh?

So does that mean that the game saves will take up that much space, or is game saves seperate for this? Either way, that is prettty crazy, there would be no point in buying the low end sku then.

that's exactly what I've been saying when they announced it at E3.
I said the 20gb would probably need a HDD upgrade in the future for active gamers because already 2-3 of the developers announced they needed to save stuff on the HDD.
I'm very curious to see how much in each game needs to be downloaded.

This doesn't take things away from the ps3 hard drive. You have the OPTION to do an install type thing for the games you are playing. The games still work fine without this install thing, it is purely optional to increase the speed of the load times. Personally, I'm probably only going to have this done for 3 or 4 games at a time. Once I'm done playing the game a lot, I delete the installed game. Even if they all take up 5GB installed, that still leaves 40GB open on the premium version. Seriously, how can you guys make this into something bad?

Keeping with the Kotaku links. This seems to be the exact same thing. You put some info on the hard drive to reduce load times to almost nothing. You can still play the game as usual without the install, but the load times will be three times as long.
Basically, if you get Ridge Racer 7 and you plan to play it alot, you use this install feature so that your load times will be reduced while you're playing it. Once you get tired with the game and stop playing it as much and start playing other things, you can uninstall the Ridge Racer information and install the other game you'll be playing instead. It's a good thing, not a bad thing. Ask any other pc gamer besides me.
Update: Another thing, the article says that they hope there is a way to upgrade hard drives. Well the ps3 can use any 2.5 inch standard hard drive, so anyone can upgrade it as they want, and they won't be forced to buy an overpriced proprietary hard drive. I know you can get at least 80GB hard drives for $90 or less. I don't really follow it that closely, as I haven't had to update my laptop hard drive (80GB) for a few years.

Still it doesn't say you have the "option", just that you can do it like it's possible. It's very unclear. It's a feature/procedure that doesn't say whether it's an option or not.
"Also unexpected was a feature in "Genji" to install the game, committing 4GB of data from the game's Blu-Ray disc to the PS3's hard drive -- a three-minute one-time-only procedure available from the game's start menu that a Sony rep said cuts down in-game load times from about 15 seconds to four seconds. That's something Sony can offer, given that both versions of its console include a hard drive -- 20GB and 60GB, respectively"

It is an option because you can do it to reduce it to four seconds, or not do it and have 15 second load times. The fact that it works fine without doing it means it's an option.
This link:
http://www.gamasutra.com/ph...
clearly says: "Genji: Days of the Blade would install 4GB of game data to the hard disc, in a process lasting only three minutes and available as an option from the game’s main menu."

It is an option. PS3 Soon-To-Be-Owners like myself will have the option on which games we want to save on our HDD, and which ones to not. And well for racing games, i dont know if you really need a save file for them anyways, and the only use for saving this racing game in particular, is if you want a little bit faster load time, which is useless. But yea, if i want, when i get RFOM, i dont even have to save it to my HDD, but it only uses 33MB of space, so its worth it(plus RFOM already has fast loading times, plus you kinda need a save file to continue on the story campaign without having to start from the beginning everytime.)

9 - Anything else Sony?
The system is starting to sound like a Frankenstein patch work.
I truly can't see how this system is ready for the public with the shortage, the need of the hard drive to speed up games and all the lawsuits one company can handle including being investigated by the U.S. Justice Dept.
Don't get me wrong I truly wanted Sony to succeed but not even Motorstorm or Heavenly Sword (two games I truly love about the PS3) is convincing me at the moment that the PS3 is worth the price Sony is asking for.
Before anybody gets on me about that comment just look at all the stuff that happened with the PS3 and all the new news that has been popping up lately while the launch is about 2 1/2 weeks away and ask yourself if you're a 100 percent sure that this wouldn't be another 3DO launch?

How 360 fanboys flame Sony for giving gamers "choice" but they praise MS for the same thing! Which is it?
1. You can easily upgrade the harddrive for the PS3 with ANY 2.5' SATA harddrive for cheap "well at least MUCH cheaper than what 360 offers you"
2. You don't have to use this feature its a option!
3. Ask yourself which system us offering you the best Harddrive option? Which gives you more value for your money? The "choice" is yours!

14 - 5GB here, 5BG there... it soon adds up
if this isn't optional then people will have to keep about 10-15GB free for 2 or three games at a time, or use ghetto-ass slow load times streamed from the bluray.
but if it is purely optional then it creates a dilemma for the PS3 owners who expecting to stuff their HD with media AND experiance fast, top notch next gen gaming- choose one or the other.

you have quite a few games, an you have the 20 gig hd with about 3 game saves on it, you got to save another game an theres not enough room so you swap out the hd. what about when you go to play one of the previous games, do you have to swap back to the other hd. if so I rather swap dvds than hd's!!!

it's not a non issue, this means that if someone with the 500$ system does this, they can only be playing 3-4 games before having to delete that space to play another game.
that is annoying, and a big downside in my book.

But I say this because there are websites out there that do, I hope you can agree with that.
However it's really hard to believe that the final product will require you to use 5Gigs of your HD. I dont think we have the whole story. I mean it's racing Game, If it were an MMO I'd understand. Also, you dont hear other games using this much space. I think somethings off with this story.

But I also heard something like this for Genji at the MTV showing.
Here is a Quote.

We will all see soon what Sony has up their sleeves since the PS3 is just a couple weeks away.
But you're right with some sites may want to see the PS3 fail but not all.

5-15 seconds for their games to load shouldn't be playing games.they have a problem of IMPATIENCE and should see a shrink as soon as possible.if it was a "REQUIRMENT",then i would be up in arms.but it's an OPTION.we no longer play with cartridges so everyone should be used to it by now.some games loaded slow on gamecube, xbox and ps2.sometimes it was because of copyright like in ninja gaiden that they forced you to read the first time.sometimes it's deliberate like when EA forces you to watch video.or square rpgs.some games push you to want to see what's next but you still have to wait.until instantaneous information reading, gamers got to get used to it or stop playing altogether.

Funny that xbox360 fanbotics would argue about having the choice to improve already bet load times than the 360 offers.
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
I think GAMERS would agree that having a standard HDD is better for developers and gamers. Heck MS boys were crying that to be the case with the original xbox, not the cry changes that the 360 didn't continue with the smart move.
