Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Holy Long Wait Time, Batman

From Loot Ninja:

"I got my copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PS3 today. I've been anxiously awaiting this title for a while, as I've been a huge fan of the series and racing games in general. So when I put the game in my PS3, I was more than ready to race. Here's a breakdown of what happened:

9:24pm - Loaded the game, started the install process
9:37pm - Install ended (13 minutes total, using 5349MB)
9:38pm - Began downloading the game update
9:42pm - Error occurred during download, had to start over
9:44pm - Began downloading the game update… again
9:51pm - Update finished, needed to hold the PS button to quit the game
9:52pm - Restart game, going through menus
9:53pm - Begin car shopping (you have to buy a car first with the 35k credits you have before you can race)
10:01pm - Bought car after looking for a while for what I can afford (settled on Mazda RX-8)
10:07pm - Finally finished first single player race (2:52 total race time)

So as you can see, if you get the Blu-Ray version of the game, it's going to take you an absurd amount of time sitting there doing nothing waiting to actually play the game. Seriously, this is just ridiculous. It took 40 minutes before I was able to actually play the game."

Since I don't feel like posting in the open zone and arguing, this is in way whining. Having to wait 40 minutes to actually play the game after you first launch it is absurd. I can understand more and more games needing installs, but 40 minutes including the required updates? Come on

I don't really understand your comment. However 40mins to play is extremely annoying but its not going to kill anyone.

For me it really isn't the time its more of the hard drive space. Installations for me are just a waste of hard drive space. That is why i will be downloading the title straight from the ps store. As for time i bet there are a bunch of things i could do in 40 mins while i wait to play and the funny thing is none of them involve making a sandwhich

Not just a racing game, any game. People went nuts over the 22 minute install of Devil May Cry 4, which was pretty bad. But almost doubling that with a first party title for the install and update on launch day?

I think somebody needs to make a sandwich.

Just kidding of course. I got the Japanese version, so I had only one mandatory wait, and I just kept putting off the update because it took so long. I think it took about an hour for the first update, and then an hour for the Spec II update.

If you take away the error, this guy only lasted 13 minutes. Since when is picking out your vehicle "loading time"? Is everyone here insane? In addition, GT5: Prologue is not a complete game, everyone knows that. So stop acting like it's a big friggin' surprise that updates are required.

Don't you guys have other things to do within the waiting period? Do something, prepare your custom GT c0ckpit, or go workout for 40mins if you have to. Not a problem for me as I am always occupied. Gaming is what I love and I make room for it in my daily lifestyle. Waiting 40 minutes is minor stuff.

Now its time to pick up my copy when I get off from work.

1.8 - sorry... sigh..
Sorry about the the 13 minutes you had to wait to install the game but sounds like the internet messing up is your ISP's fault not the games fault. Sorry about the game developers providing you with fixes and updates to the game. Also sorry about the game not being simple like mario kart where you just have to choose a car and jump in. Buy a Wii perhaps since you sound like an impatient child Wii and mario-kart might be your solution?

1.9 - After the 40 minutes
How long did it take to play the next race? The next after that? Faster after that point I bet.

Now if you want to complain, do it about something like HSG5's online tournaments where you wind up waiting Well past the 40 minutes you mention. Just for a perspective.

It took me MUCH longer than 40 minutes. I went to install the game, and it took about 13 minutes. Since I was waiting, I decided to have some Taco Bell. When i was done, the Taco Bell had worked its magic, and I had to take the Browns to the Super Bowl, so to speak. That took 30 minutes. Then I had to do the update, that took 7 minutes. Then my GF called, took me 20 minutes to get rid of her ...

Seriously, I see 13 minutes install, 7 minute update. The rest can't be counted.

Hurt myself laughing at that. You'll hear from my lawyer :-)

I heard that eating Taco Bell can give the Browns a great running game though.

This going to sound TOTALLY sarcastic, but you do realize you payed for an unfinished product? Your situations are like being extremely HUNGRY for a breakfast item and paying for a pretty white box that has the word "Cereal" in bold black letters on it. You have a really good idea of what you're going to get but you cant be certain. While I hate that you all who really enjoy this title had to deal with the load time etc these developers toss slop at gamers and we lap it up like swine :(

I agree with you. Dont get me wrong GT5 prologue is sexy but it is an incomplete version of a game and we celebrate it? We also live with an hour long load time. Ouch. Sony stepped up with a decent title and free online, but geez, 40 plus minutes, ouch. I guess that will give me some time to catch up on more Bioshock.

it took me longer than 40 minutes, more like an hour as the the update process kept failing due to so many people downloading it on launch day (uk). i was pi$$ed, but no-where near enough to start whining over the interweb about it. I was happy in the knowledge that the update brought 20 odd extra cars, a new track and online play for free... nada. anticipation heightens the pleasure ..no?

honestly now, complaining about installing games?lol,PC gamers are seriously LAUGHING at Playstation gamers for this nonsense,if you can't wait 20 mins to play a game that you have been following and waiting on for years, then IMO you don't deserve to play the game, period.

I don't care, during that 40 minutes you could probably... iono.. meditate over the races that are about to challenge you! I could use some meditation, or an anger management class right now.

OFF TOPIC:
COD4 is making me furious. Noobs with JuggerNOT and Martyrdom have gotten on my last nerve. If that isn't enough I get into a great game. Bog, no lag, I'm the Marines. 37 kills, tearing people up with the almighty M16. 30 seconds before the game ends.. "CONNECTION INTERRUPTED!" I've been getting that every 20 minutes in COD4. I don't know if it's because my PS3 is currently running wireless, or what, but I'm sick of it! I'm paying 70 bucks a month for 6mbps... well look at what speedtest.net has to say: http://www.speedtest.net/re... ... I'm not downloading anything, the only things using up internet are the PS3 and my PC. I'm running on Linux so no worry about a virus eating up packets or anything, and I'm just on my web browser currently, nothing downloading. I'm going to go insane!!!

Not even 2mbps, pathetic. 70 dollars for terrible internet... Ugh... First it goes down within the 2 weeks I have to get a 12 page research paper done, damn near failed that. And now this...

Oi, sorry for getting so off topic, but I just broke a brand new DS3. Wall: 1, DS3: 0. I'm having a terrible night thus far.

Where do you live and who the hell is your ISP?

I have Time Warner here in Southern California, and I pay 45 a month for 10 Meg.

Oh and....sorry about that DS3....that's really a shame, lol.

Contact your ISP, show them the speedtest results, and demand answers.

That's about all you can do.

Threaten to not only stop service from them, but also to spread bad word about them to their other potential customers.

I live in rural illinois.. =/ it's 30 bucks for 2.5megs.. I called my ISP "We have you running at 6megabytes, speedtest has to be wrong" I went to my router setup page, it's downstreaming 1,920kbps. I just yelled at them and complained, said words I shouldn'tve.. or maybe should have... and hang up. I restarted my router and it was back up to 6kbps for about 5 minutes and quickly worked its way down, 1 megabyte, at a time.

Damn, I envy your connection =[.. I think speedtest is off though. At my grandmas house, who has the same ISP, router, etc, it says her download speed is 29mbps... yes, 29mbps, but upload is at 417.

Oh, and that DS3 didn't get the worst that's happened to a controller, well mouse in this case. I got d/c'd on FFXI in the middle of a HUGE BCNM fight.. I threw my keyboard across the room and it broke, and my mouse(and this is a HEAVY, dense mouse) and it practically got stuck in my wall. It's an old farm house with little 19th century insulation in it. Easy to break through. Ugh... I have a bad temper, a bad internet connection... what's next...

Oh, and I can't threaten to stop service from them. They're the ONLY High Speed ISP available where I live. I live 25-30 miles from the nearest arbys!!!!!!! THe town I live by has a small diner, and that's pretty much it, population of 650 people...

I think playing COD4 offline on Recruit on the last level while blaring some Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, and the like helps. Don't like those bands that much, but when I'm angry they rock!

Well, I'm off for the night, damn school...

Well i still haven't been able to install the update...Been trying to get it too V-Spec II for 5 days now...

Just sits at preparing download, although since the update on server side i can get it to "downloading" but is still doesn't do Sh1t! - although it do go once but only got 30% through then stopped...even sat there for 5 hours!

Almost at the point of taking it back to the shop. Every other game works perfectly including all updates whether it be for a Game or PS3 itself.

I love GT but if they can't even sort simple sh1t like a update then they can get f**ked...Bring on GRID

15 - Well...
lets do dome math

It took him 43 minutes total
3 minutes were spent racing
6 minutes were wasted on update error which you may or may not have
10 minutes were actually spent playing the game (buying car..)

3+6+10 = 19
43 - 19 = 24
so 24 minutes would be a fairer estimate, i know 24 minutes is still long and may take some people longer...but thought i should point it out

Ok the install is a bit over the top. But its just unfortunate that there were update available immediately too. I mean if you installed Battlefield or WoW on your PC now wouldn't you have to put a heap of updates and patches as well to get it up to current?

My advice, if anyone buys the (and you should) disconnect the net. Install it and play it. Do the updates tomorrow so at least you break it up a bit and it wont seem so long.

" I mean if you installed Battlefield or WoW on your PC now wouldn't you have to put a heap of updates and patches as well to get it up to current?"

That is the norm for PC gaming but we're talking about console gaming here. The ps3 is taking a step backwards with the installs.

Let me be clear, I'm not in love with the installs myself and I dont know why some need them when others dont, or why some take seconds while other require a sandwich, but...

I grew up loading games on a C64 tape deck so maybe I'm a little more patient than others, but if Polyphony Digital say I need an install to play something the quality of GT5P, then so be it, I'm installing even if it take 3 hours, even if I need to buy a bigger HD (which I already did, and everyone should do too).

And hey Knight, the bright side is you dont have to worry about it.

The install in itself is ridicolous. One of the reasons people play on consoles instead of PC's is because it gives you a smoother experience. At least that's why I prefer it over PC. What's next, defragmentation?
