durrr.... I thought that was pretty obvious, your basically intentionally over heating your system, forcing the fan speeds to increase to try and compensate.
IF you tried it, and soon your PS3 falls you'll have no one to blame but yourselves. Oh and you can probably kiss your warrenty good bye.

Well it shoudlnt void your warranty cause there is nothing in the manual about it, you know not doing it. They shouldnt even allowed the console to do this i dont think. Nothing beats a good ol can of air anyways.

Sony is just trying to be safe so thousands of PS3s won't be jeapordized, but really this technique is just tricking the PS3 to think it is overheating to turn up the fans.

when that fool said, fan testing or whatever i asked myself how can this kid be that stupid??, i mean really something as dumb as turning ur system upside down triggering a fan test instead of pushing a button or going to an option, truly truly DUMB! Like in the ps3 manual
"if you want to test ur fan levels, turn on ps3 and hold upside down in mid air for 30 sec to a minute." what and IDIOT!

The 40GB SKU should be safe. As for the 60/20/80GB, I knew from that start it was not a smart idea to turn the PS3 upside down. lol. Anybody desperate enough to clean the internals should just buy a can of compressed air. Much more effective and proven.

regardless if your stupid enough to hold it upside down for a cpl hrs till its really really hot, i think u deserve it to overheat...2ndly, i tryied it and only left it upside down for a little bit, like a min or so and i think it really all depends on how long you do it for...i know it will be ok, its those dumb people who'll turn it upside down and leave the room while the console "cleans itself" if you get my point...

If your PS3 is still functional I wouldnt concern yourself to much. But I highly recommend you don't try it again as it may seem fine now but cause problems at a later date.
If you need to get the dust out of the system, buy a can of compressed air.

10 - How?
If your booting up the PS3 with that on how does it overheat the system? All it's doing is booting with the fan at full power. The processer is inactivated right?
So, how is the fan blowing cool air out the back from boot harming the PS3. If this is a problem then It's a hardware design issue.
Sony has confermed it as a failsafe yes, for overheated systems. Have they confirmed that this process causes an overheat or is it a test of the fans capabilities in case of an overheat?
Even wrose does it burn out the fans? From my standpoint if the hardware kicks in like this there is a reason for it and I highly doubt it heats up to that level in 1 second flat.
More info, Where is this Sony confirmation?
Please link to english page.

nobody is stopping you from doing this. Everyone, including Sony, is simply recommending that you refrain as it could possibly lead to damaging your system.

I agree, I don't see any reason why this fan test would damage the system. Certainly, the author of this news report got it wrong when he said that it causes the system to overheat. The source link message doesn't give any good reasons as to how or why the fan test damages the system either.
Everyone's taking this news report as fact, without even reading the words closer, or looking at the source link.

Look at the process, you havent actually turn on the system yet (as in the CPU and GPU etc). You just flick the power switch at the back on. There is no way this will overheat the CPU or GPU as they are not doing anything or even on yet.

"Nobody is stopping you from doing this. Everyone, including Sony, is simply recommending that you refrain as it could possibly lead to damaging your system."
I didn't say do it. My post is asking to acknowledge real facts. You see the article doesn't include these things. It just says confirmed by Sony. This simple response doesn't satisfy my understanding of the problem.
At the time of my post no evidence of why, or how it damages a system was available. I'm like that student in the back of the room that raises his hand when he wants to clear things up. I'm definitely not the student who doesn't ask questions and fails come test time.
It's a great sign of intelligence to seek knowledge instead of blindly accepting what you hear. The response you posted implies that I'm attacking the problem in retaliation. No, I'm simply seeking to broaden my knowledge and satisfy my concerns.
Edit: It seems this news is being confused with the 40gb fan test. The one listed is for a 60gb (forced test) after reviewing this I can see why Sony says "Don't do it!" The 40gb test is unrelated and not destructive like the 60gb test mentioned here.

19 - Is there a motion sensor in the PS3??
Either the PS3 really DOES heat up real quick when you put it upside-down, or there is a accelerometer inside the PS3 (like in digicams) that tells it which way is up.
And as heating and hot air goes, I seriously doubt that flipping the PS3 180 degrees will cause it to overheat so rapidly...
So there must be an accelerometer inside it that checks which way is up. And if the vented side is down, it goes into panic-mode and fires up the fans to avoid too much overheating (if the vents are blocked, because they a looking at the table)...

actually its just that the heat sensor is located in the bottom of the ps3, under normal conditions it would react to heat buildup cause the hot air has to manage to heat up the whole system to get the sensor up to max, but by turning it upside down the hot air goes UP directly to the sensor and therefor faking a system overheating situation resulting in the fans powering up, a lot.
So basically this is just a way to make your PS3 think its overheating and it reacts as it should .. by giving more power to the fans.

I rang Sony myself n they say it is not a fan cleaning system at all its 4 when a disc should happen to get jammed in the console it will force it out damage may be caused too disc but ps3 wont be jammed i was not sure at first seen as tho it sounds like fans but they ensure it is 4 jammed discs and say it is fine an will not brake the PS3 even still tho when i did this with my ps3 it still kicked dust out so i guess it cleans it in a way so carnt complain
