Update: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix: Filesize NOT an Issue On XBLA

From Capcoms Official Blog: Here's the straight story on the glorious highs, devastating lows, and delicious middles behind making Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, from the game's producer, Rey Jimenez:

"The last thing I'll mention is concerning the talks the have been occurring online concerning the filesize of the game with respect to features on the 360 and the PS3 versions. I can officially say that the filesize will not be an issue. With great help from the guys at Microsoft, we will be able to offer the same features on both platforms to the same quality as each other. To use the term I've been reading on the forums, neither console version will be "gimped" due to any kind of limitation."

Good to see Capcom resolved this issue with Microsoft. Now gamers can enjoy the game equally.

3 - Kinda Disappointed
that they didn't stick with the original art direction. Ryu looks way more detailed in that first picture. I guess next gen consoles still cant handle extremely detailed 2D sprites yet.

I hope I'm wrong, but it looks to me like they had to go with new art because of 360 file size.

This is such BS coming from Capcom. I think that most people would agree with me and say that the original artwork from the outsourced company is superior to this "new and improved" version. If you read careful, he's saying they went from 8 shades to 4 shades. Basically, by doing this they will be able to cut down on the file size because less colors take up less memory. (Think about how 24-bit color, versus 16-bit color, versus the old 256 color all look different). So this seems at just an attempt to get the file size under 150 megabytes.

totally - they lowered quality to get under the bar >_<
shading quality was most definitely lowered

"So, we turned to Udon to help solve this problem. First, they identified that all of us (Capcom and Udon) were aiming way too high with our render style. In the original style, we were going using at least 6-8 tones to go from the darkest to the lightest values of a particular color. This, as some fans actually pointed out, is extremely hard to do. We decided to stick it out and go with that route and unfortunately, it didn’t work out too well.

Udon’s suggestion was to take the tones down to about 4. So now, a particular color will go through about 4 shades when going to light to dark. Some tweaking was also done to the line art to match this new rendering style as well. The overall result is a different style that is still going to be in full HD, but will be more efficient to animate and therefore get the game to you guys sooner. It also looks pretty damned good.

Once Udon and Capcom agreed to go with that route, we had to essentially reboot the whole art pipeline. The character art pretty much started over from scratch with new reference art from Udon. Using lessons we learned from the start of the project we are now using a team that utilizes more Udon talent and an outsource partner (still very necessary) that uses a smaller, but more focused group of artists."

6 - we'll know if the filesize did change the art direction
by looking at file size. if it is close to 150-250 mb than we'll know that 360 is the culprit. if it's more than that we'll know that MS has grown some sense.

Oh Capcom, why must you persist in making me sad? It's like an abusive relationship, you dangle the love of StreetFighter above my head like a treat to some beast of burden. I get ecstatic and then you proceed to bludgeon me with the thing I desire thus making me hate it, but still longing for it.

Ok as weird as I just put that, they really need to stop f'n up Street Fighter on all fronts. This new sprite change is weaksauce, the "old" ones were good enough. *evil stare*

It did look more detailed but if this really helps development and gives them time to add in the other features that wasn't originally planned I'm all for it.

I just want to play the thing already. Udon still did a great job.

14 - Oh god...
So it got restart (the art work from scratch) and downgraded (in tone) because Microsoft couldn't allow some extra space. Really nice Microsoft, really nice.

15 - this is a big WTF news to me.
I rather have Capcom pay me to play this or cancel this title.
It's really hideous and I'm being serious here. It looks like flash animation sprites. This is a big let down. wow.

Hopefully this wont happen to SF4. (**fingers crossed**)

16 - Bad move
If one looks at both pictures clearly, especially at Ryu's fists, it looks worse now. I am beginning to realized that this drastic move was implemented just to reach MS file size standard, and the way the game looked prior was way better than now..Oh God..Capcom..you're the worst..

17 - Well, those subtle changes make quite the difference.
Looks almost ugly now, as if it's missing a lot of detail.

18 - They let me down with SF4 and now they are screwing us with this come on..
They only showed us a handful of characters of how they supposed to look in their entirety - well detailed and hi res. The game actually looked promising and it almost warranted 20th purchase of the game. But now, look what they did, the game sprites look terrible than what they originally intended.

Why couldn't this be the 360 version and they give the PS3 owners the true form of the game. I would gladly pay more for a detailed sprite game than this man..CAPCOM WTF YOU ARE SMOKING?

I agree with most comments here. I hate the new Ryu sprite, so what's next, we're going to get the next 6 months with them releasing the odd character sprite to see fans reactions? Didn't we do this last year?

And when he says that he promises not to take months before the next update makes me wonder when we're actually gonna see this *Insert own choice of words here* Wasn't this originally planned for the end of last year? Are we going to see this before SF4 comes out?

I'm disappointed in a big way. Streetfighter was the biggest game for me when I left school and I've plugged untold time and money into the different console and arcade variations. How this dude can sound so excited and positive when what they are showing and telling us is that the graphics have been dumbed down and we still don't have a release date is beyond me. I was once stoked for this remix, now it's leaving me with a funny taste in my mouth.

Sure King of Fighters 13(?) will be a full price title but I doubt it's going to be as half assed as SF2 HD-Remix looks/sounds.

I'm still a Streetfighter fan, I just hope Capcom prove me wrong.

20 - So now the game is being scaled back to fit?
I'll pass!

I can't believe I have been waiting this long for this game only to now have it cut in half! Enough is enough already with this limit MS hampers devs with for downloads on XBL! Yet they don't bottle neck demos?

Why must Premium and Elite owners have to pay this price because of the stupid Core unit? I wish they never came out with a core unit to begin with.

Thanks MS
