PS Eye Motion Sensing Is Not Coming Soon

Sony's PS Eye-based motion-tracking system that uses head movements as game controls, and which was recently shown at GDC, was merely a tech demo. This means it is unlikely to be coming to a shop near you soon.

1.1 - Hey Spong!
This tech was in an EyeToy game on the original PS2 called Anitgrav.

Here's one of the many youtube vids.

Not so far fetched now is it?

2 - Hey...
Any of you guys remember that patent Sony made awhile back? It showed a guy standing on some sort of mat with a "camera" propped infront of him, and it was all being connected to a box with the label PS4 on it. Well, how about it? Could this be a demonstration of what Sony has in store for the next next-generation? This would be a great step forward for video gaming. Further drawing in the gamer by immersing himself and his actions into games. But how exactly could this work? Would we still be using controllers? How would co-op work? All I know is that if you are attempting to draw a gamer and his body movements "into" a game, the graphics and realism of these virtual worlds are gonna [have to] be incredible. That would be the purpose of trying this. Whew, I can't wait.

They will probably test the technology on a PSN game maybe first and if people like it, use it in full retail games.

Frankly it's the kind of thing that will always work best on the wii. To really get the best out of head tracking you should be standing up, and aiming with the wiimote would be perfect in conjunction. Too bad the wii probably isn't powerful enough to run it in a game....

As soon as I saw it I thought of Killzone 2's lean and peek system, it would be PERFECT for that. I could just take cover behind something and lean myself instead of using controls to do it, then it's just a matter of shooting. Namco could make the next Time Crisis have a camera feature so it'd benefit the same way.

Sony needs to bring these things to fruition before someone else does and then they'll be called copiers again for something they intended to do al along.

You know, if any of you have downloaded some of the PSEye games off of PS Store, you can already see the early stages of this technology in use... the camera tracks hand and body movements to move things on the screen... so, I don't know how far off this more advanced applications are.. the big question is: will they use it in innovative ways, or in gimmicky ways like the current motion sensing abilities of the Sixaxis have been used?
