Lair Controls Patch Experienced At GDC

Ripten:

"One of Lair's biggest criticisms was that it's motion controls were compulsory. The rumour of a patch adding analogue stick control caused a sigh of relief among Playstation 3 gamers."

"Now one fellow has claimed that he's experienced the patch at GDC and that it will be released in the coming months"

Game never needed a patch. It's perfect the way it is and I'll always play it with motion controls. I've beat it 4 times now, silver and gold on most everything.

4.1 - I agree
The game doesn't really need a patch for the controls. Don't get me wrong, it would be great if they added normal controls. But in all honesty, the motion controls are just fine.

Most of the people that had a problem with the controls are those people that lack in dexterity. You can't just flail around like a 3 year old and expect to move anywhere you want. The game just calls for a steady, patient hand.

And on a side note, anyone that has been playing warhawk with the motion controls rather than the normal ones should have no problem with lair's controls.

4.4 - Options are always good.
Just because you like it one way doesn't mean it works for everyone. I play FPSs with the y-axis inverted. Does that mean all games shouldn't come with the option to switch it around to the player's liking? Which is why those people complaining about Resistance 2 have 60 players at once is a bunch of bull. Its not like you can't play with less. But its good that Insomniac is including it for players that do want that war zone experience.

Lair was the perfect storm of fanboy fear of the PS3.

The terror the game generated was only topped by Killzone 2. Lair was the first big exclusive game that gave fanboy reviewers in the media a chance to destroy a PS3 game and write their 'teh PS3 doesn't live up to teh hype' stories.

With Lair you had a game that:

1) Ran in 1080p with absolutely insane amounts of world sizes and things on the screen running on an engine that only the PS3 is capable of handling

2) Had level sizes larger than entire 360 games with its smaller than last gen 3.5/7 GB DVD drive

3) Had sixaxis support fundamental to how you controlled the dragons

So you had Xbox fans who desperately needed to lash out at the game for 1) & 2) because Lair single handedly makes a mockery of every silly fanboy claim that the PS3 and 360 are somehow remotely close in graphical power. And that the smaller than last gen 7GBs DVDs weren't too small for real next gen games.

And then to top off that Xbox fanboy fury at the game, you had Nintendo fans throwing in some token hate at a PS3 game daring to use motion control.

It is funny to watch people pick up the game and say "Wow, this game is great" and "I don't understand why this game got slammed in reviews"

So if you need to tell yourself that you are picking up the game because they 'fixed the controls'. Whatever. Most likely you will end up playing the game with the superior motion controls regardless.

At least it will be a good lesson as to how fundamentally broken the gaming media is and how the gaming media is really nothing more than a bunch of punks with platform agendas.

4.6 - Unfortunately, Lair is why many of our games are just the same old thing over and over
Level 5 tried to give gamers something new and ambitious. A game using dragons with a completely new way of controlling flight.

And they were demonized for their efforts. Which is a very sad thing.

Games always complain about games being the same old thing. Yet when a developer tries to give you something new, they get scorned.

And because of that, developers would rather stay on the same old path of doing the same old thing instead of thinking outside the box and give the gamers something new.

See, to me, Lair is a great game. It was well wither the $60 I spent on it. And I don't regret it in the least.

But the next time gamers have the nerve to say "we need something new", just think back to games like Lair. Then you'll understand

Lair will be the game, at the end of the Ps3's life cycle, everyone will wish they experienced. It's going to be the Troll 2/Blood Hook/Boarding house of videogames... It's not so much that it's a bad product, it's just simply misunderstood.

Anyone who passed Lair up were too busy sticking their heads up EGM, Joystick, Kotaku, Destructoid and many others @$$'s... That's my take. Lair plays very well and the learning curve is taught to you over time... not all at once.

The game is awesome and easily under appreciated by everyone. The thing is, Factor 5 and Sony aren't going to be willing to just say "here's a patch" it's fixed...

I don't think so, anyways. I think they're going to want to re-release the game under a "special edition" version at a cut price. That way new consumers think it's "NEW" and not just lair on the store shelves.

16 - The gaming community...
Can be brutal. Just imagine if you tried to create something new and innovative, spent your time and energy on it just to have it torn apart by the media and gaming fanatics.

I know its a tough business, but sometimes people can really go above and beyond when they could just demonstrate their dissatisfaction in a more civilized way. I think it did hold some water the excuse that hard core gamers probably weren't use to the motion controls and that made it more difficult, and thought I fell into that category, I would never say the game was horrible, it just wasn't my cup of tea at the time.

People should really watch what they say about games and how they bad mouth them in the media. In the end, someone spent some time and effort on it and though its hit or miss, its still an effort. Just my thoughts.

Hope the patch works out for Factor 5, perhaps though the game has a bad rep among people who already played it, maybe new people to the system will find this game cheaper and an excellent way to experience something different in the next gen.

19 - to the guys vehemently defending Lair's motion controls:
just admit it, guys: the controls were terrible.

i bought Lair day one. played it all week, finally beat it.

i enjoyed the motion controls, to be honest, but they were not, by a long shot "perfect."

controlling the dragon is simple enough, and the most fun. dashing is also a lot of fun to do, but when you start getting into the more complicated tasks like doing 180s, attacking enemies, and pulling off the motion based combos, it gets sloppy.

i plugged in a PC controller to my PS3 and played Lair for a few minutes using analog controls. it felt *MUCH better, even though, by the time i beat the game, i was a friggin dragon riding *MASTER.

choice is always a good thing, and a lot of the complaints hurled at Lair centered around the control (i find it funny that most of the complaints for the PS3's "heavy hitters" last year centered around one, generally miniscule complaint that was blown out of proportion, ie, Heavenly Sword's length).

Lair does most of the fundamentals right:

1. Graphics - Lair is gorgeous, hands down. The dragons look great, the water effects are great, the scope of the world is *FANTASTIC. It has a wonderful Lord of the Rings vibe to it, and i felt like i was on a Nazghul, ripping through soldiers.

2. Story - The story is very cinematic and epic. i was never bored, and always wanted to continue on.

3. Sound - The sound in this game is *FANTASTIC also. the music, the sound effects, the voice acting; all quality.

4. Gameplay - Considering that you are on the dragon 99.9% of the time in the game, i'd say the gameplay is pretty solid. i enjoyed most of the missions (except for one particular mission about a third of the way through that's just insanely difficult due to multiple and time-based objectives, and the controls fight against you fiercely here), and the environments are varied enough that you are always seeing something new throughout the 15 missions (i *LOVED the prison level. beautiful).

the controls are where that score comes down (though not as harshly as the reviewers brought it down; i'd give it a 7/10, and if you add the patch for analog controls, add an additional 1-1.5 points to that score). you may have thought the controls were "perfect," but a *LOT of other people did *NOT, and they should have the option to play the game in the manner that is the most comfortable to them.

Warhawk, for example, has *EXCELLENT motion controls, but some people prefer the analog sticks (i use the analog sticks for Warhawk, but that's only because sometimes i just want to let my fingers to the talking). they should have that freedom of choice, and if they one day decide to give the motion controls a try, that's great too. at least they have the option.

i enjoyed Lair the way it was, but i would certainly welcome analog controls. i'd rebuy the game for that (and improved PSP connectivity).

I actually got the hang of the controls after an hour or two of playing, but after a couple more hours realized that Lair's problems go much deeper. The game is fundamentally flawed from a design perspective, though certainly not enough to warrant a "4/10". I could understand a 6/10 as a middling score, but it's not an utter failure. It had its moments, it just had a disproportionate amount of frustrating moments.

That being said, if a patch is released I would seriously consider renting it again. I'll give it a few more chapters, but after my initial experience I'm in no hurry.

More often than not it *is* a beautiful-looking game.
