PS3 Lost Planet Load Times Are Lightning After 5GB Install

The upcoming Lost Planet from Capcom is joining the ranks of Devil May Cry 4 and Everybody's Golf, coming with a 5GB installation on the PS3 which can take up to twenty-minutes to complete. The good thing about this though is that the PS3 game has lightning fast load-times following the installation.

The 5GB install that Capcom put on Lost Planet: Extreme Condition has been receiving quite a bit of negative press. We have been fortunate enough though to have received a pre-release copy of Lost Planet from Capcom, and have to report that the 5GB install is well worth it.

1.2 - Is this the same game I played a few years ago on the Xbox 360?
Strange, I don't remember any long load times when I played it. I guess I will have to dust it off and see whats up.

If u played that game a few years ago u should tell capcom that someone has made that game before them, since it was released from capcom on 360 and pc 2007..

i just played thru the first 10 minutes on my 360 because i couldn't remember either, and i saw 1 loading screen for barely a second...so unless there are worse loading times later on in the game i don't see what would be gained from an install.

i still stand by my original statement however; seems like thats the only way people can bash the ps3 is by complaining about 5gb of space on the standard hard drive.

not a big price to pay for me but I know some people are thinking "that's a good portion of my HDD". If this becomes a trend I think a lot of people will be upgrading their HDD's.

TO be honest, I don't even see what the big deal is about installing games on a console anyways.

people don't have a problem with it. It just that when we are force to install it, that when they have a problem with it. Take UT3 for example, I didn't had a problem installing it on my ps3, but DMC4 I did. People don't like it when they are force to do something in order to play the game.

I don't have a problem with it, but I'm pissed that Capcom is making 5gb installs for 20 min. Every other developer that requires an install (very few) have their games under 2gb and installs in under 5 min, but not Capcom. Most games don't even require an install, so wtf Capcom stop porting the PC version to the PS3.?

Personnaly I don't care about the install, I care about the big chuck of space it takes up. I already have 22gb left in my ps3 and if every game for the ps3 had a 5gb install, I would either have to delete some of my stuff or upgrade my harddrive (which I do not have the money too).

is this going to be the norm for ps3 onwers. to have to install 5 gigs just for a couple seconds faster load time. or is this just with capcom games so far

yeah pretty much only Cap games

Heavenly Sword had an install too, but it only took like 3 mins (not sure about the size, i think it was like 500mb or something)

and if i remember correctly, Motorstorm or Resistance (don't remember which one) had like a 200mb install that took like 30 secs

i think that's it so far, but if Uncharted can have the best console graphics so far, require no install and have almost no load times then i really don't see why this has to be the norm on PS3 (unless there is a need to protect the BD drive)

@vega75

lol, you finally succumbed eh? after all that time saying "Unfarted" and crap like that

well i don't think you NEED to get a bigger HDD, unless you have tons of DivX and demos to store

there aren't that many installs to make a bigger HDD a necessity, it just depends on how much media you have to store, but sizeable SATA drives are pretty cheap nowadays so you might as well

oh yeah and Xeikon that was pretty dumb

if thats the case then how come Uncharted doesn't need an install and has minimal loading times

and how about the dozens of games on the PS3 that don't need any installation huh?

dont spread bullsh!t when you have no idea what your talking about

and BD has a faster read speed than DVD

the only thing i succumb to is being a gamer. most multi-plat game i wil buy for the 360. games like DMC4,SC4,and GTA4,ect the only game i find interesting is FF13 and versus and if they suck like 10,10.5,12 then i will be selling it soon after

did you know the most frequently failed part in a console (ignoring RROD - which is unique to the 360) is the disk drive laser??? the reason the 5gb game data is transferred onto the hard disk is because it is the most requested content. Add these two facts together and you get the word "longevity" and "little waiting in game".

this is exactly why i moved all my ps2 games onto the hd loader/hd advance system. there is no way in hell a laser drive can match the speed and reliability of a hard drive. playing ps2 games off the hard drive is awesome even if you have to wait 20 mins to install the game.

If that was the case why did they not make the entry model the 80gig?

I bought the 40gig model and i had no idea there would be any games that needed to be installed, if i had, i would of got the 80gig model. I feel a little bit conned to be honest. I now either delete games, or buy a bigger HDD, neither of which i want to do.

Well if you were going to purchase the 80gig if you knew beforehand that games had installs, what's really stopping you from upgrading the drive? You can get a pretty good sized hard drive for the price difference between the two, only thing you're missing are the added features that come with the 80gig.

it's good that the loadtimes are quicker, but if this should become the norm, than it could turn out to be a problem, considering it takes up 5 gigs per game.
naturally i doubt that "all" games will take up 5 gigs, but if by some reason that they all do, it could pose as a problem to people who dont have a large hard drive, and end up limiting them on their content, and amount of games they can have

I don't see the problem, every PS3 has a HDD. Option of upgrading, I would understand if you bought your PS3 and you opted to not get the HDD.

But for the people who complain, are probably who complain on needing a memory card for older systems.

14 - As long as this data doesn't affect my
save game data and, I can write other data over this install, then I don't realy care. I usually play a game to death and then put it down for a while. I wouldn't mind reinstalling the game data again, I just don't want to loose the progress that I have made.

360 fans act like this is a bad thing. Had MS made their console with a standard HDD then they would be using them as well. As long as it aid in a smooth gameplay experience and doesn't affect my saves then it's all good.

do what I did... go to new egg, and by yourself a 250gb 2.5" SATA hard drive for 89.99 (cheaper than xbox360's 20gb). You won't be complaining about 5gb installs ever. Oh and why didn't anyone complain when bethesda made PS3 owners install 4gb (oblivion)? The game practically had zero load times.. oh thats right, it installed it in the background thats why.

Looks at how many games are in the PS3 library... Look at how many of those require a 5GB install... It's a rather small percentage!!

The only dev to do this is Capcom. So before people jump on the 'WTF, my hard drive is going to get filled', it's very few games that do this and only one developer so far.

Prior to these TWO Capcom games the highest install was Oblivion I think with 4GB. I've also seen a few games with 1 or 2GB installs. But on average installs are very small.

Even on a 60GB drive you could install 10 or 11 games of 5GB (allowing for the OS grabbing a chunk). Obviously assuming you have nothing else on there.

However, the important thing here is that the data can be deleted. Once I complete a game it goes in the cupboard, if I decide to play it again in a few months (or years) time I'll just install the data again... Big deal.

I really can't believe people are complaining about a 20minute wait that shows a tangible improvment (in most cases) when the game is loaded/loading.

18 - I really don't like this.
I shouldn't have to upgrade my 40gb HDD just to play capcom games. This means I'll have to start deleting and reinstalling files whenever I want to switch out games. That's two capcom games taking up 1/4 of my HDD (more considering the ps3 os takes up a big chunk as well).

Now, I do have a 250gb external HDD. I know I can transfer some things to and from it. Can I put these giant game installs on that? Demos?

How is it that I can play Uncharted (the most graphics-intensive game on the ps3) with ONE loading screen and NO install? What is capcom doing wrong?

But it still takes 5GB of your HDD. If you bought a 40GB PS3 and you got Lost Planet, DMC4 and that Golf game that's 15GB gone already.

Games will use it more and more because of the slow BluRay reading. So what the future holds... Upgrading of the HDD is forced that way and a PS3 doesn't cost you 400 Euro/Dollar, but add the price of a 250 or 320GB drive with it for sure.

And fans now say: it is lightning fast. Yeah nice. Installations of 22 min. per game sounds like PC gaming, not console gaming.

Plus: a nice way to cover up Sony's flaw in putting in a too slow drive that's not optimal for playing games, but pushing it's video format.

But not all games use it. Look at the 'big' titles which have less of an install... Ratchet, Uncharted, Burnout all use next to nothing. So the argument that slow Blu-Ray drives are to blame is rubbish.

20.2 - Slow drive...
None of the other Devs are having problems with the speed of the BlueRay drive except Capcom.
Games like uncharted and heavenly sword had far heavier graphics and sound and these didn't need a large install.

20.3 - As clairified earlier
as long as it doesn't affect my save data, then I don't really mind writing over intial the 5G install data. I usually play a game and put it down for a while. Re-loading the data isn't all that big of a concern for me. Not all games use this anyway. You act as if I'm going to need a new HD in a matter of weeks.

this is a good thing. i don't know why people are putting a bad spin to it like 'oh no i have to buy a hard drive' or 'i have to wait 20 min for the install which is going to ruin the game more than in-game loading'. i mean sure the difference between loading isn't that 'big' but it's going to matter for those long rpgs or even big games. having a choice is always good, so i am hoping that capcom will learn.
