Lost Planet Requires 5GB Installation

You want Blu-Ray, you get 5Gig installs. The Blu-Ray is slower reading than the DVD in the 360. When this next gen gets here, those fabulous games have more data needs for the different levels.

Trust me, waiting every time you go thru a door in Oblivion on the 360 for at least 1 minute gets old in a hurry.

The good thing about it is that they they can upgrade to a 80 gig for about 60 bucks or a 120 gig for 75. I have the 60 gig version but I'm going to upgrade to a 120 gig or more sometime this year.

TECMO AND CAPCOM are the only 2 japanese companies MS has in it's Japanese support group.

They both favor the 360. You can listen to the Capcom devs and they all say they get hard-ons for America.

CAPCOM games will continue to be better on 360 until PS3 takes the lead in sales.

Meh... I was one of those lucky fellows that got a 20 gig Playstation 3 (in order to get it on day one). Though I haven't mention it on N4G, it's one of the reasons I usually get Xbox 360 versions of Multi-platform games. However, I do value full backward compatibility over a larger hard drive. In the future, should I need more space, it is possible to replace the hard drive with a larger one.

For now, I just delete content after I'm done with it.

Don't feel sorry for 20gb PS3 owners, they can easily upgrade their hard drives up to 320gb for less than $180 while a 120gb 360 hard drive runs for $180(I've seen it cheaper, though)....Don't get me wrong, I am no fanboy! I like the 360, too.

What are you talking about being lazy? These people are making HUGE games for YOU to enjoy. I have heard people on this site complaining how short some games are, how they are done before they really even get into it. The installation is required so that in game load times will be shorter. Sure you are complaining about a one time download, granted it is a long one. But I would hate to hear you whine if you had to sit through the constant level loads of absurd length if the installation weren't there.

Blu-Ray is still in its infancy. It's comparable to a 1 speed CD-Rom player. Many developers are finding different tricks to get past the slow speed of Blu-Ray. One trick is to duplicate the data over and over. However a sure fire way to cut down load time is to install data on the hard drive. Plus, it saves development time and money. In the future, as developers learn to develop on Playstation 3, I'm sure you'll see less and less games having to be installed. Until then, it's a necessary evil that those wanting to enjoy Playstation 3 will have to put up with.

I mean capcom will have a hard enough time trying to get people to get lost planet, but to be so lazy on something when you could easily take your time (its not like people are on pins and needles waiting for the ps3 version) but instead make another controversial download, i am fine when a games installs its usually one to three gigs and doesnt take a lot of time at all and usually the benefits are tremendous

but in this situation capcom is shooting themselves in the foot i will remember this as will other playstation customers in the future further annoying the people who sustained your company all these years.

I'm no expert programmer(I do dabble), so I don't know EXACTLY how to do it, but there is a way.

Uncharted, which is considered by many to be the best looking game on the ps3, has NO load times after the first one. "all" it takes is a streaming system. Load the next level while you are still playing the one you are in. Keep it in a cache on the HDD(or something), and BAM! When you need the data, its there.

Load times should be a thing of the past with the ps3, and if your games do indeed have load times, you haven't put forth 100% effort into your game. Because its possible.

There are really only two require a large harddrive install:

1) You are severely disc space constrained and had to use a very computation intensive compression algorithm to fit your data onto the disc. And you need to spend tens of minutes decompressing data to the harddrive that you couldn't possibly do while the game was running.

2) You need to stream data faster than the disc drive can handle so you dump a big portion of your game data to the harddrive.

Pretty much any other loading off the disc can and should be done as background streams to a temporary harddrive cache that goes away when the game quits.

Capcom had decided to go pure lowest common denominator this gen with their PC based engine this and their other games are using. They are most certainly doing their main development running on PCs with the game data all stored on their machine's internal harddrives and at the last minute getting the game to run with the least amount of effort on the PS3 devkits. Hence the inane harddrive install requirements.

Capcom isn't getting a cent from me this gen. It will take them years to get their reputation back.

I defended the DMC issue because I thought it was a one off. If Capcom are forcing their customers to actually upgrade the PS3 HDD then they might aswell not develop games for the platform till they learn how to actually use the streaming technology like the others know.

This is even worst than the bad ports EA produced as it eats 5GB of your hard drive. This is inexcusable and damn right offensive and anyone who dismisses this is just a blind Sony politician.

I certainly hope that Capcom gets it's act together, there are several ways to get behind this by streaming the in background while the level is being played. If Bionic comando and Dark void, street fighter 4, and RE5 all have this mandatory 5 gig install then i'm sooo not dealing with them. but at the same time... new bluray drives with 4x read speeds are hitting the market this year. and Sony has said that the new gen Bluray players and burners and PS3s later this year will come with them standard. So it should have even faster read speeds than the current dvd. also the current Bluray drive read speed is 2x.

These reports are getting lame. I have a 60GB hard drive so I don't care. I don't load my drive up with music and photos. I delete demos when I'm done with them too. If drive space becomes a problem I'll just buy a new drive. So far I like how fast DMC4 loads. As for the install, while DMC4 installed I went for a walk and got some exercise. Oh, is that a dirty word for this guy? He's probably pasty and fat from laying around all day.

I think, since the ps3 has already been proven to read multiple formats even without Linux, that Capcom is dumping their xbox 360 code into these installs and then making the consumer's Ps3's finish their work for them.

Think about... you take some crucial code zip up into a file source the ps3 is capable of reading "which basically everything" and then toss it on the disc for us to install and our Ps3's to retrieve.

It's unacceptable.

If Capcom wants to make xbox 360 games so bad... they should sell their company to 'em. They're worthless to me anyways. I bet the PSN version of Bionic Commando will have a 5 gig install too.

First Devil May Cry 4, then Lost Planet. Both need a 5GB/20min install.
The thing is there are plenty of other games on the PS3 that are high quality & power hungry but dont need this.
Look at Call of Duty 4, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchett and Clark, Burnout Paradise.

There are plenty of studios who can make PS3 games with short load times and without a 5GB install. It sounds to me that Capcom haven't got to grips with PS3 hardware. This is more a reflection of Capcom not bothering to optimise for the PS3. For such a big company, it really doesnt reflect well on them.

This has nothing to do with the PS3 hardware. It is good old fashion crappy game engineering.

Streaming in data to memory or the internal harddrive on the PS3 is no different than doing so on a PC from a DVD.

I haven't had any problems with DMC4. As for the install, maybe Capcom just came up with their own way to do things on the PS3. It's not like the game takes a long time to load. I only wait a couple seconds here and there.

I'm sure they probably are working more on the 360 since they seem to care more about that piece of crap but at least the PS3 games look and run as good as the 360 versions. Much better than what Ubisoft did to us last year.

Maybe next year they'll change and push the PS3 more, once they see the truth about the PS3 and 360. For now I'm not worried about a 20 minute install and 5GB of space being used.

Dont most ps3 games have installs on the hdd....Being a gamer and not a technophile This has been one of the cons in buying a ps3 right now...I would be purchasing the closest sku that has the best BC...which would probably be a 80 or any other upcoming sku...if every game needs a install ...theres a chance that how I buy games...I will be filled up really fast...and since I dont know how too change hd's, im screwed...its starting too look like I will be waiting for the ps4...more ram..faster blu-ray drive ect.

Changing your HDD is as easy as 1, 2 and 3... You take your side plate off... the one that says (HDD) on it. You unscrew that blue bolt and you slide your HDD out and replace it with you new one. It's terribly easy.

I have a 250 gb hdd in mine right now and haven't even went below 200gb. I have every PSN game damn near. Tons of game saves, all my music and a folder full of movies on it.

The thing about Capcom doesn't bother me space wise... it's the fact they're forcing you into it. It's unacceptable.

But I buy my consoles from best buy now...with the 2 year warranty's....I asked and they said they wont accept a system that changes hdd because they consider it tampering..theres some sticker or something that shows if you tamper with it....I usually wait until that 2 years is up and get a new console or something...or if there is a price change like the psp lite...go exchange it...especially if I get RROD..I can get a new xbox the same day..

I love how the 360 Fanboys are all over this like flies on sh*t. If a 20 minute download can speed up my load times than what is the problem? If you xbox fanboy are so worried about our 20 minutes than what about the down time on Broken XBOX 360 which nearly every xbox owner will face? How does 30,240 hours sound. So 360 fanboys give it a break

I think fanboys are all over this because it takes a 20 minute install just to equal 360's load times. And because if this was a Xbox problem Sony fanboys would be all over it too.
