3.3 - Last week was the Lunar New Year
The lunar new year is like christmas, new year and birthdays combined in Japan (and most other asian countries).

It makes sense that sales would drop across the board for all consoles after that week, the same way that sales drop significantly after Christmas in the US.

What do people expect? For the hardware to remain they same when no games was release last week? So people just start creating these type of article to get hit on their website?

Why not include the Wii also. Didn't the Wii also drop a lot?

Hell put the 360 there also, consider that drop also.

5.1 - that just means
they went from selling 10 360's to selling 5. Not such big news. No one mentions 360 in japan because even MS is trying to forget they cant move a console out there for anything. This is not fanboy drivel, I own both a 360 and a ps3. This is a fact: MS couldn't have a much more difficult time moving consoles out there.

7 - You can thank smash bros. for this drop
It's just my opinion, but I do believe it was the smash bros. release that did this damage to the ps3 sales in japan as of late.

It's just my opinion so feel free to disagree

Edit for Darkiewonder: As I said, feel free to disagree :)

7.3 - Very true Op
Normally I just lurk round here. I usually don't bother commenting here. But despite how it may LOOK at first, lodossrage IS correct.

True, the wii had a drop as well. BUT the underlying factor here is that the ps3 drop wouldn't have been AS bad IF smash bros. wasn't out. So his comment DOES make sense swordfish.

Look at the bigger picture here boys.

43% is a HUGE decrease, even if during a week when no titles were released.

10 - handy work of some xbox fan
funny how the article downplayed the fact that the ps3 just outsold the xbox 360 on its own turf, and goes to title the story with a ps3 drop percentage....

Its ok though, I'll take that gladly, just make sure you're next article reads something a little something like this...

The PS3 outsold the XBOX360 Everywhere in the WORLD for the month of January.

its ok, you can thank me later for the tip........aight?????

11 - seeing that all 3 dropped just tells me it was a market thing...
One might also wonder if the previous week spike might have been influenced a little by DMC4 launching? Would make sense that it would spur some PS3 sales in Japan.

Is it cause the 80GB is no longer available?

When is the launch date for the 120-160GB ps3?

I was more unnerved by the drop from 200k DMC4 units sold to 30k units sold in a single week.

I think the Japanese gaming market is pretty much unpredictable at this point. I mean....Disgaea 3 debuted at a not-so-astounding 30 units its first week. Thats a NIPPON ICHI game which should have practically made it worshipped.

At the rate that it was selling I forsee better numbers and the NA and EU markets since Disgaea has a huge following in the west now.

Well... when everybody got their consoles... why should they buy another one? I guess alot of people have a ps3 now in japan, normal now that the sales are going down (same thing for 360 and the wii)

16 - ps3 is doing fine.
just another lame article to try and downplay sony's momemtum.

i could say that ps3 outsold the other hd system,the 360,by 7:1.

does it really matter?ps3 still outsold 360.doesn't matter by how much.

360 in over 2 years, hasn't sold a million consoles in japan.now that would be called pathetic when the other two companies have over a million sold in each major region in "ONE" year.

no amount of spin will change the fact that 360 is slowly moving into third place WORLWIDE.

megaton...................

Remember:

If PS3 sales are low, there's a legitimate excuse.

If 360 sales are low, then any talk about shortages is propaganda by Microsoft and it's clear that the sales dropped off because Bill Gates is a big poop head and anyone who owns a 360 is a Microsoft fanboy who despises Sony our Lord and Savior.

DMC4 and SSMB was released the previous week so the following week might have drop significantly from the previous but why?.

25 - Maybe its just me....
But I would expect for a surge of new hardware purchases with a new title and then a tapering off a while after.

I'm just asking because I could bet that when DMC2 or Halo 3 or SSBB were released, each respective system got a boost in sales. Seems to just make sense unless I'm missing something. New content would theoretically compel new customers to make the investment.

I think we could expect a similar surge when MGS4 or FF are released. Just seems like they are stating the obvious.

Of course PS3 sales dropped in Japan. Super Smash Bros. just dropped for the Wii, and the PS3 had 0 game releases this week.
