Lair 2.0 on the Way?

Although Factor 5's 3D action flying game Lair has been available for months, players who could never come to grip with the Sixaxis controls may have a more traditional solution waiting in the wing. Recently, F5 president Julian Eggebrecht chatted with IGN about Lair's mixed reception at the marketplace and hinted at a future enhancement to the game.

well i had lair for about a week but sold it back to eb while i could still get some dollars from it. I thought the problems with the game werent jst with the controls because i could have fought my way thru those controls. I jst wanted a game a bit more story driven and not so mission based i really hate games like that. Made the game really repetitive so there i am struggling with 6 axis playing a repetitive game and the target system was crap. The lighting engine was a little overdone in my opinion graphics were great but the lighting was too much in some scenes. In the future to make lair a better game allow the dude to get off that dragon and duke it out with some of the foot soldiers. I could totally play God of war with 6 axis controls cus i knw the rest of the gameplay would be worth getting thru crappy 6 axis jst couldnt say the same for lair

How he claims they didn't know gamers would not like the controls. When every preview I read on the game, people just b!tched about the controls to begin with. Maybe if they would have listened and added the analog sticks as an option the game would have done a lot better.

dude I totally disagree...I thought the only thing remotely fun about the game was the sixaxis...the controls seemed fine for me, and had I had the option...still would have used them over just the sticks most likely...

what sucked about Lair was every single other thing in the game...the bosses, while pretty, where boring as shat to fight...the 'dogfighting' was unbelievably bad, with there being no real way to even see what the hell you were doing to other dragons...you would simply highlight them more or less, and spam fire at them...

the voice acting was nearly as bad as Resident Evil...thats Resident Evil 1...as in "Jill...Jill...I am going to kick...THIS...door down"...it was impossibly bad for a modern game...the level design was equally bad...with unclear objectives, random cutscenes for no apparent reason, and overall less exploring than a game of this scale would leave you to believe...

its a terrible game...it has been since day 1...the controls recieved a brunt of the criticism though...which suprised me...some act as if this game would be great if you could use the controls also...no way imo...it was a total stinker overall...

I think the general consensus of Lair on people is because most people read a bad review, and in turn it becomes they're opinion. So they spout off as if it's truth or fact.

It's not that terrible a game. It is rather a "Average" game at best. The production values are there. The soundtrack, the graphics looks great most of the time, and the sheer number of things going on at once actually makes good use of the SPU's for handling AI. It's just the controls are controversial, story has plot holes, and some cutscenes seems unpolished. It's a good 6/10.

A terrible game would be Conflict Denied Ops or Blacksite Area 51. Terrible production values, terrible graphics, terrible sound effects, terrible gameplay. Nothing good about it, easy 3/10's.

yeah I should have mentioned the game does look good...and the score is excellent, by far the best part of the game imo...

I would give it a 5/10 i guess...and would barely recommend renting it, unless you are not expecting much...

but I rented and played the game before I 'read' any reviews...I saw some scores here and there, and rented it the first few days it became available...and I agreed with the review scores for the most part, just didn't agree with why it recieved said scores...

I simply didn't like the game...I thought it was cheesy most of the time...the objectives for each level were not planned out very well...and it just wan't fun for me...at all...if the game isn't fun, it kind of falls out of being a form of 'entertainment'...but be assured my opinion was based on playing through as much as I could, which ended up being most of the game...the end of which I saw on youtube a few weeks later...I didn't base anything I said from a review...that is more lame than the game itself...

As soon as the complaints starting coming in, F5 should have been working on the patch.

Waiting this long to give user's analogue control is just bad for business.

Add analog, fix some targeting issues, touch up the motion controls so they are a bit more responsive (180 turn) and re-release for $25-30 and I would buy it again, I like the story and the soundtrack.

It was decent game, with enough small fixes it could do pretty well with the masses this time.

If they will remove all bugs, some frame rate problems and add analog controls, Lair 2.0 could easily get 80-85% on gamerankings. =)

7.1 - Dont confuse mass effect with lair son.
The only reason mass effect scored low AA on most websites is beacuase it was a mirosoft game only.

anyone who has Lair like my self know its one of the best AAAs of 2007.

I have Lair (it was a present) and i think its a really bad game. The storyline for the 1st few missions was save the grain. haha..

Like apparently the most important to these bad a$s dragon riders is eating oatmeal.

The random cut scenes are really annoying and horribly implemented. and the voice acting wasnt great.

If the new control scheme comes in i will give the storyline another go

13 - Lair is not a bad game
It's not a great game either.

The thing that frustrated me the most with it wasn't the controls. It was purely the fact that the cutscenes had no skip and when the cutscene was put in and you were about to destroy another dragon you lost track of the dragon you had been fighting.

The controls feel very natural to me and I don't have a problem with them.

The story to me was a very good, what is good and what is bad, sided story. Again everything is good with this game and I had fun with it except what I said above.

I think people that let the reviews get to them missed out on a decent game and should of at least been a rental ... I have fun with the missions and I will get better at it.. but right now still messing around with Burnout and PixelJunk Monsters.

14 - SIXAXIS was not the problem
The game was marred by many technical and design flaws. Sixaxis control for this game was the best part for me. With that said I didn't think this game was all that bad. I mean, I beat it and it's pretty rare that I can get to the end of any game without being bored out of my mind. Looking back though I think the combination of these flaws and WAY too much hype killed this game. My advice to Factor 5 is to just forget about 2.0 and concentrate on Lair 2.

15 - I don't think lair would be fun even if it did have
analog controls. The whole game felt rushed and unpolished. The sixaxis controls were a mixed bag. On one hand it felt very natural to steer the dragon, but it was hard to reference where I was aimed due to the poor camera setup.

Great ideas, but poor execution.

Although the game all around could have been better, I think this teaches everyone a lot about giving multiple options for games. The worst part is they forced this on a console that isn't big on the motion control but uses it as a side thing and a little extra in the controller as they were dealing with their lawsuit over Rumble. The worst part is that this game had a lot of hope and from all early indications seemed like it was going to be amazing.

I totally loved (and still do) lair and it's definitly my most played game in my PS3 library.

I loved everything about it. The motion controls, the story plot, the music, the graphical look, it's innovation, the medals- everything.

I just dont care what anyone may say about me loving this game - I love it and that's all that really matters at the end of the day.

The only good thing about this game was the controls ironically. Flying with the sixaxis is fun but everything else is a let down. Poor dialog, bad voice acting, bad targeting system, stupid classes of dragons like they were star wars fighters lol. This games leaves alot to be desired and leaves a sour taste in your mouth because we know and Factor 5 knows, that this game could have been so much more.

5/10

If the original had been released in the UK same time as the States, I would have picked it up even though the reviews were absolutely HAMMERING the game. I like the Sixaxis in most games I've played (Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Rub-a-dub) and thought I'd be able to get a grip of the controlls.

But due to the delay over here especially, when the game was released (late Nov) we had got through the game drought of last summer and there were a number of titles to choose from like Uncharted. I had read the reviews and although I don't let them be the be all end all of my purchase decisions, other games were coming out so I never got to play it. I have a friend who owns it and I'd like to borrow it. My Girlfriend loves Dragons and after seeing here playing Twing-Twang and inventing names for particular EVIL looking shots (ex. The Penetrator!) I think she'd get on fine.

22 - my thoughts on Lair
Graphics: 9/10
Sound/Music: 9/10
Story/Presentation: 8/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Controls: 4/10

that 4/10 for controls really, *REALLY brings down the score of the game, and hampers your enjoyment of Lair.

i bought it day one. i beat it by the end of that week, and i enjoyed it immensely.

there were parts about controlling the dragon with the SIXAXIS that i enjoyed (diving, doing 180s, etc), but the overall controlling of the dragon had a *STEEEEEP learning curve.

there's also one particular mission, i think Chapter 5 or so, that is just absolutely *ABSURD. it's incredibly difficult to do, as it's a multi-objective mission, and precise controls would go a long way as to making it easier to complete your objectives.

i thought boss battles were alright, and the game had enough variety, considering the fact that you are, honestly, flying on a damn dragon the entire game.

the atmosphere of the game is great, it's just seriously hampered by the control issue.

interestingly enough, i tried Lair via my PSP using Remote Play. it was *INCREDIBLE how much better the game felt controlling the dragon with that analog nub. unfortunately, the heavy reliance on the SIXAXIS for things like diving, 180's, and attacking make it impossible to play all the way through.

also, plugging in your PC controller allows you to play Lair with analog sticks, and once again, it elevates the game significantly, but also like with Remote Play, the SIXAXIS required tasks make it impossible to play.

as it stands now, i'd give Lair a 7/10.

if they patch it and include analog stick support, i'd add another 1-1.5 points to that score.

don't believe everything you read on the internet concerning this game. it's by no means perfect, but it's most certainly not the 4/10 "crap" that so many review sites across the net claimed it to be because it was the first "showpiece" game for the PS3, and their expectations were too high. personally, i went into Lair thinking i'd get a pretty game with dragons, not the game to end all games. people have no one to blame but themselves for falling into hype traps.

if they add the analog stick support, i'll probably pick up Lair again and give it another go. i really enjoyed it (but i traded it in for Warhawk. lol)

it was killed by its own hype. Everyone thought it would be hugely original and innovative, and when it came out and was not perfect like people expected, it got slammed for it. Solid game, not exceptional, but solid.

I hope they do a bit more with the story and also allow you to come off the dragon and fight in mortal kombat and vice versa...that would make the game grrrrrrrrrrreat. And with the online aspect make it like a massive battle field like a warhawk but just with different dragons as the flying planes, with a ranking system different types of midevil weapons then this will be a AAA title.

I enjoyed the game, bit short, bit easy on the dragon kills, boss fights should of been better.

As for the sixaxis? I got on with it really well, but then maybe, and ive said this before, it was because i didn't fly a dragon like an F18 Hornet.

29 - My view on Lair...
A game with all the potential to be a truly great game. No - the controls did not suck as much as the reviewers made it out to.

What really really sucked is that you were not allowed to actually play the game. The devs had this interfere as you play system that kept on stopping you in the middle of the action, changed your objectives just as you got the hang of the scene. Repeat this cycle ten times on a level it came down to every two minutes you got stopped, pointed to do something else - which means - you never got to execute your own strategy.

The game had all the potential to be one of the best of 2007, if you were actually allowed to play it. The environment was there, the number of enemies was there, the free environment was there... just the freedom to actually play it was taken away - and you got shunted according to what the publisher though how you should play the game.

Next time around guys, just allow us to play the game ourselves OK? We are gamers. That is what we do. We plan our own way through the level, we decide our own strategy. The one guy likes stealth, the other likes to rush in. The one likes to first go for ground targets, then aerial. Just let us be... please...

I played Lair the sixaxis is pretty good it takes time to get used to it, but once that happens the games control is really good. The only problem for me was the damn targetting system most of the time when I wanted to kill something my dragon would rush to a target miles away from it, damn hope they fix that.
