PlayStation 3 has sold 5 million in Europe

The PlayStation Network's success in Europe has been a surprise to David Reeves, President of SCEE. In an interview he reveals "We've now got about 2 million PSN registrations. That's about 40 per cent of users." Which means that, using his figures, approximately 5 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold in Europe.

He also reveals that the PlayTV DVR add on will launch in 5 EU territories in late April, and Home is on track for a Spring release.

users do have multiple accounts, but Reeves says the 2 million PSN accounts (probably multiple accounts) is 40% of the installed PS3 base.

I honestly don't know how relevant that is if you consider the fact that the vast majority haven't even signed up to the PSN. An even smaller percentage would have thought of the initiative and method in creating a duplicate account to access the American PlayStation store. But even then, do Sony Europe only count the accounts linked to European countries or ones linked to PAL machines?

This doesn't mean less than 5 million ps3s sold in Europe. The multiple account statement means the percentage of people who have accounts is simply lower than 40% of the pas3 owners.

well tough, at most, europeans tend to have three accounts. in the us, they have 2, and in japan, they only have 1. that way, they have access to all the demos whenever they come out.

so your comment about 5 accounts was a little outrageous and caused people to disagree with you.

i'm willing to bet that sales in the US will shoot up after the release of mgs4, like the ps2 did with the release of mgs2

When you make a psn acc. there is an option to activate your ps3 (no idea what it does) but you can only do it once, they track it through that.

1.12 - Serial Numbers & DNAS

Each PS3 has a serial number when you sign on. It doesn't matter how many accounts you have these unique numbers are registered to each PS3 once a user logs on. It'd be easy to detail the actual units just by ignoring the user accounts entirely and taking a into consideration these unit serial numbers. This'd make it easy to differentiate the multiple account users with actual consoles.

Say I have 5 accounts and 2 PS3s.

On the first ps3 I have accounts 1, 2 and 5
All are linked to system serial 0001

On the second PS3 I have 1, 3 and 4
On the second one all are linked to system serial 0002.

All those multiple accounts would still register as only 2 ps3's.
Why? As you can see account one is linked on 2 ps3's. Even with this account on multiple PS3s the secondary serial number determines the actual hardware numbers across all user accounts.

"We don’t often mention competition but I will give you some interesting data. In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland, our current cumulative installed base is now higher than that of Xbox 360.

It has not quite yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake installed base of Xbox 360 across PAL territories in late summer. I would say before, but that is when we think we will overtake Xbox 360.

It’s worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of 3:1."

Nuff said. 360 is dead by January 2009. Sony's dominating Japan, dominating Europe. All that's left is North America. And, games like GT5: Prolouge, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and HOME will all be perfections that will murder the Xflop.

360 is good, but blu-ray is now coming back to haunt it. 360 should have had a built-in hd-dvd or blu-ray, but blu-ray is already winning, so yeah, too late for MS to have new drive now.

Dead in North America?? No. You see, what I look at is how the numbers increase. PS3 went from selling 150k in October, to 450k in November, to 800k in December. Sure it's expected during holiday, but for a console that according to you is "dead", don't you think a 6X increase is a lot in only 2 months?

Now, take a look at 360 worldwide(since that's what we're comparing). They've recently been constantly declining. The 360 had a small boost in Japan temporarily, but is now again flopping as usual. In Europe, Sony keeps on taking customer by customer and capturing the audience, as shown by the 3:1 sales ratio. And finally, in North America, 360 is doing exceptionally well, but how long will that last? It's pretty obvious that us Americans will swallow up consoles if there's an awesome game on it. PS3 hasn't had many in 2007, I'll admit. Well, take a look at this year's lineup.

You think Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Little Big Planet won't shake the industry? And I didn't even mention multiplatform titles that people know as a Playstation franchise like Devil May Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4. This year is going to be a great year for all gamers, but PS3 is the console that gamers worldwide will want to buy. Sony is steadily catching up on a worldwide base, but it's just a matter of time till North Americans hop on too. I have, now it's only a matter of time.

Sony hasnt even manufactured 5million consoles for europe - how then could that many have sold? Its likely that sony have sold 5 million consoles WORLDWIDE. This would be in line with what we already know from the american and japanese figures.

Reeves is a CEO OF Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. He talks to a European media source, MCVUK, and is asked about Europe (PAL territory) and answers it with the following comment:

How is PlayStation Network doing in PAL TERRITORIES?

"We’ve now got about two million PlayStation Network registrations. That’s about 40 per cent of users who are registering. We’ve also had about 33m downloads which is a huge, huge number. And we’ve got 25 stores up and running across the PAL TERRITORIES. That, of course, is one of the reasons why it’s sometimes slow to get some of the uploads onto the EUROPEAN PlayStation store; we have so many stores."

Yet you sensationally conclude he is speaking of worldwide figures even though the entire interview, the question and even his answer is referring to PAL regions?

sub accounts don't count. Imagine 800k users with 2 accounts (1.6 M). We ALL know you must psn for friends and store shopping. It's 2 million masters, otherwise it would not make sense. It would be abnormally high. Don't be humble, psn is free. Probably 5 million worldwide. Pretty fast, huh? Home will make the others sign up. I predict over 10m psn by E3 08'! Live will be surpassed this year!

I find it funny that some people are shocked by the 40% sign-up rate since Broadband isn't exactly the de facto standard yet; my friend Javier just got DSL two weeks ago (and has been playing COD ever since).

Also, while most people obviously like to connect online, check out the playstation store, etc, there's still a small percentage that just don't care about online connectivity, and that's to be expected.

PS3 is doing well currently in continental europe. However - I see that changing; as microsoft has hinted recently at a rather hefty price drop in the region in the coming monthes.

The UK is another story however; the 360 is experiencing simmilar success there as in North America. The UK accounts for 40% of the european market.

the 15-16 million console sold mark by this summer, they will hit 11 million by their projected date and right after that is when MGS:4 drops with GT:5 prologue already on shelves and possibly Killzone 2.

5million consoles in 10months = 500K a month.

Sony sold 600K in launch week. and relistically would have sold around 900K for the first month

So that leaves 4.1million in 9months = 455K a month.

December euro sales according to VG charts - 1.25million that leaves 2.85million to be sold in 8months or 356K a month/<89K a week.

Plus the price cut in october boosted numbers, and with sonys strong brand here

I would say yes thats believable that they reached 5 million in europe
