Sony: 'No plans for PS3 price cut in Japan, US or Europe'

Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed to the Japanese version of Bloomberg that there are no plans for a new price cut for the Playstation 3 console. This accounts for all regions: Japan, America and Europe. Rumors were circulating that Sony was planning a price cut for the 40GB PS3 model for the end of January, but Sony states this is simple speculation.

i think they would say NO, even if the answer was actually YES.

don`t expect to hear anything until it happens.

IMO

It might hurt them at 1st to drop the price.
but, with the type of year their about to have it would be better for them in the long run. IMO.

You have to say no in order to protect your current sales. If you let the rumor float consumers might lean towards waiting on their purchase in the hopes of a price cut. If you state unequivocally no price cut it removes the option of waiting.

2 - This should be a shock to nobody....

Sony has already hammered away at the price of the unit at their own detriment... at some point they need to have a stable price for atleast 9 months. Stablizing the price point will actually help spur sales now that they have hit a price that consumers seem to be more comfortable with. If they continue to have "rumored" pricecuts coming ....consumers will begin to hold off on purchases...waiting for the "next" big deal. Sony cant afford to have the consumer sitting on the bench waiting...

With all the big titles coming this year...and a price that seems to be in the sweet spot range...its time for them to start selling based on the software coming....not what deal they are going to offer next.

Whoever started the ps3 pricedrop rumor should have thought before they spoke up. Sony had a fire sale, a pricedrop, and a hardware downgrade all in the ps3's first year. It's obvious that they struggled just to get the price where it is.

3.1 - Happens to me with every gen!

I bought the PS1 just before a price cut and the same with PS2. With the PS3, I got the 60 gig just before they change to the 40 and 80 and rearranged the prices again.

Edit - Oh yeah, same thing happened with Sega Genesis - bought it for $189.99 and they dropped it like two weeks later! Bad luck I guess.

They are just starting to make profit. They are outselling the 360 for the 1st time and they have EASILY the best lineup of 2008. What incentive do they have to lower the price. If anyone needs to have a price drop it's M$ on the 360. But why would they? They are also just starting to make profit and outsold the PS3 11/12 months last year. If they do Sony will match. If Sony does M$ will match. They both know this. They are both selling well. Why cut into profits? 'Maybe' holiday season next year... maybe...

6.1 - One reason is because they arent competing with Microsoft.

They dont care what Microsoft does. They are no longer in any trouble of losing exclusives, and devs know how to use the PS3.

They would do this to
1. Make studios end HD DVD once and for all.
2. To ensure that MGS4 does indeed sell 1,000,000 day one.
3. Actually hit their target of 11,000,000 shipped.
4. To gain enough momentum to possibly win some Microsoft exclusives such as Gears/Mass Effect/ Bioshock.
5.To slow Wii momentum.

The only thing that matters is whether they can or can't. With Blu-ray being certain, they most likely can losing minimal amounts of money, all of which they would gain back on PS2/PSP, software sales, etc. The positives outweight the negatives.

Are they even making money off the PS3 yet? I don't think so.(but I did say think not know ^^) Honestly they have already dropped the price a good amount already why would they do it yet again. People would start expecting a price drop every few months and sit around and wait as one poster said already.

Plus no company would release a statement saying 'yes we are planning a price drop in the near future'. That would be a horrible mistake for then no one would buy the unit and just wait till the price drop.

But never during those times did it outsell the 360 WW like it did last month and has been for the last, what is it... 6 weeks? In fact it was getting killed by the 360 before the last drop/SKU, so it made financial sense for the other price drops and new SKU's. Now, however, there is no reason for a price drop, unless M$ drops their price and they match it.

$750CDN after tax. Now I can get it for $450 after tax. The only reason I bought the 60gb over 20gb was for the wifi, which the 40gb has. I've never played a single PS or PS2 game on the console. I didnt pay $750 to go back to SD last gen cr4p.

I dont think hes lying. There will be now price cut, just another sku. The 360 has a few and so will/does the the ps3. The new sku will include a 20gb hdd, removal of the wifi, no backward comp., two usb ports and a built in blu-ray(of course). This new sku will be priced @ 299 us dollars. This price cut will come 1-2 weeks before or after the xbox 360 price cut.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you!

There will not be another sku - they've created quite enough confusion with the models they have without making any more confusion. With the exception of the backwards compatability (and the memstick reader), all the models have maintained the basic PS3 spec - blu ray, Wifi, wireless controllers, HDD, blu tooth.
They will not releasea sku with one of these features removed - the small cost bennifit would be offset by the huge confusion amoung the average consumer, and its this demographic that Sony needs to keep on board.

I believe there is plenty of scope for a price cut if the competitive circumstances demand it - which means if the 360 drops in price! If that doesn't happen, then the price point will remain as is for now, as demand is rising at the current price points.

If, and when they do decide to cut prices again, you can be sure they will continue to deny it until the last minute. There's nothing more likely to make people reconsider a purchase, than a rumour of a price cut just about to happen!

Yeah same here,I would use my old 60gig PS3 for F@H and Blu-Ray and I would use my new 40gig PS3 for pure PS3 games

$399 is cheap enough,no price cut is needed IMO,I think the time to buy a PS3 IS now,If you want to enjoy all the great games coming out this year then hurry your a*s up and get a PS3 now before it's too late,I think the great games coming out this year will make up for the price cut,but I do believe Sony WILL lower the price later on this year;)

my brother got a PS3 in May 07 around our B-day (yeah, I'm a twin and a Taurus lol) and, at the time, I thought a 400 dollar PS3 by the end of the year was just wishful thinking...and it happened faster than I thought...so props to Sony...what do you think the next starting price point will be? And think about it before answering lol, thanks...

21 - Another price cut by SOny this soon would look like desperation.

The new SKU and price cut were a result of poor sales and lack of a killer app for the Holidays. They had to cut the price or face losing even more market share. The resluts of the price cut/new SKU were increased console sales and no further loss of market share atleast from Microsoft. Now that sales are stronger it would be foolish to cut the price again. Sony is already losing money on the PS3 even on 40 gigs. This isn't a fault of Sony, it is normal to not make a profit on hardware for quite some time.

If GTA releases and Microsoft cuts the price of the 360 resulting in increased sales, then it might be possible for Sony to make another cut to stay competative. It is highly unlikely this will be the case though since Sony has a very strong lineup of exclusives coming this year. Those games alone should keep sales within corporate expectations.

As for people that think Sony is outselling Microsoft now, that is far from the case. It is less important to Sony to sell more than a rival. A couple thousand consoles isn't much. What they set their goal at is market share. Sony still controls a great deal of marketshare with the PS2, PSP and PS3. They look at all the numbers generated by their entire line and not just that of the PS3. Sony is still focusing quite a bit on the existing PS2 market this year along with PSP. They look at a much bigger picture than fans do.
