No 1080i in Uncharted PAL after all
50
Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer what some of you have been arguing about in our forum - that the European version of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune doesn't support 1080i resolution after all.
"Naughty Dog only added it to the US version very late in the development process," Sony told Eurogamer. "Including this in the PAL version would have meant delaying the game's release as a result of QA testing each localised version again."

I really don't understand what the issue is! I have a 1080p screen however, if I go to system settings and uncheck 720p and leave only 1080i and 1080p checked then ALL my games automatically go to 1080p. This includes:
Ratchet
Uncharted
RFOM
WarHawk
Now, on my old TV that was only 1080i I only checked 1080i and all those games I just mentioned went to 1080i automatically. Try it for yourself.

Glad they came out and made it clear though. It sucks for those that do not have an up to date HDTV but from the sounds of it, this is not a huge issue in the PAL areas like it is in NA.

Contrary to the almost universal acclaim Uncharted seems to accrue, it does have screen tearing issues; not many, but they are there.
Yes, a great game, and one I enjoyed immensely, but not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Then again, I wasn't expecting it to be, unlike many others; it is Naughty Dog's first PS3 game, after all, and their first foray into the pulp/Tomb Raider genre.
Having completed it, I'm very, very keen to see how the next one turns out. A game of Uncharted's quality, but with all the wrinkles smoothed out, would be truly exceptional (especially if it were just a little longer), and I'm expecting nothing less from Uncharted 2.

Well, perhaps I'm just unlucky, or just more discerning; who can be sure? Out of interest, what tv are you playing it on?
I'm running the PAL version on a Sony KDL-40X3500 (which, being Sony's big, bad boy, obviously renders 1080p).

It's possible it does have tearing and I haven't noticed. That said, I do tend to notice major flaws, so if it's minor, I won't. I'm not sure how bad it is in Uncharted.
My TV is a Toshiba 32C3030D, accepts up to 1080p input, but outputs max 1080i.

Yeah, the screen tearing wasn't too common for me, but it was there. It generally only occured in larger environments, such as when you whip the camera about to view the vista around the U-boat in the jungle.
So, I can imagine many would miss it if not looking for it, but I'm a perfectionist, and always spot these things.

I think you may have missed the point. The problem isn't that the game isn't in HD -- it is, it runs at 720p (and that's what it runs on my TV at). The problem is for the minority of PS3 owners with old 1080i sets (which are pretty rare in the PAL region, I hear), as they can only run the game at 480p.
So, to make that clear, if you have a last gen telly, you're screwed with the PAL version. So, we are still well within the 'hd era of gaming' as you described it, too far within, perhaps, as those with older set-ups may be left behind.
However, as others have made clear, as the PS3 has none of this region nonsense built into their games, you can just import the US version, which does support 1080i (presumably as there are far more 1080i sets in the US).
So, besides a small hassle for a small minority, this is really a non-issue. Of course, if it affected me, I'd be pissed! But, it doesn't, so I'm happy.

i think your slightly over doing it.
Hardly any HDTV's in the EU are 1080i only, 99% support both 1080i and 720p (which looks better anyway)
For the few that have 1080i only sets they can easily import if from the US if they wish.

Europe adopted LCD much later than US and Jap, probably 99.9% of all EU LCD's and Plasma's support 720p.

10 - Not that big of an issue.
FullHD is somewhat overrated. In a normal living room where you sit about 3-4 meters from the TV you need at least a 50" tv to notice the difference between 720 and 1080. So only if you have a really big tv or projector or is seated fairly close to tv this is an issue.

im sorry, but it really gets on my nerves when people say that^^, theres more difference between 720p/1080p than between standard tv and hd (480/720).
Do you ever wonder why PC games/monitor are small yet have much higher resolutions? try it now, half your monitor resolution and tell me there no difference and that on like a 17" screen.
i have a 24" 1080p monitor (1920x1080), which is the res i run games at (apart from crysis), now are you suggestting that if i reduce my res to 1024x720 i will see no difference??

I completely agree with the ol' mighty-douche. The whole resolution thing seems to be played down a great deal by many, but the differences on screen, especially on a large screen (mine is 40") are not only noticable, they are very, very noticeable.
Personally, 720p looks pish on my tv when compared to 1080p, and 480p is just icky. The differences are remarkable. Perhaps some will be happy playing Uncharted at 480p instead of 720p, but I would not be -- and fortunately, I don't have to, as I have a 1080p tv, not a 1080i tv.
Really, have you sat down and compared resolutions at all? As mighty-douche asks, would you be happy playing PC games at 640x480 rather than 1024x720 or 1920x1080? And that is on a small screen -- on a bigger screen, the differences are more pronounced.

A simple math example:
Let's take a 42" tv (a fairly standard size on tv:s today) and let's say you sit about 3.5 meters from it (fairly standard size living room). 42 divided by 3.5 gives 12. This is the ratio between the screen size and the distance from the screen. Larger screen and/or shorter distance gives higher ratio.
And now look at the computer screen. Take a 22" computer screen (most people I know today has about this size) and let's say you sit about half a meter from the screen (at least I do). 22 divided by 0.5 gives us a ratio of 44. Thats more than 3.5 times bigger ratio than the one to the normal sized tv in the normal sized living room. You see now how high resolution is so more important on a computer screen?
You can't just look at the screen size but also have to take the distance to the screen in the equation. There is a limit to how much details the human eye can pick up.

you want simple math? ok, 1080p has TWICE the number of pixels compared to 720p.
right now open paint (nice and simple) zoom in so you see the pixels, ok, now draw a circle with 10 pixels.... now with 20....
i know thats very basic and crude but the principle is the same. more pixels more definition, it really is that simple.

You're missing my point. The distance to the screen matters to.
To further elaborate on your paint example. Let's say you draw a circle with ten pixels and then scale it up to twice the size. Then draw a circle with twenty pixels. Put the two circles beside each other and slowly back away from your screen. After a while you won't notice any difference between the two.
And another thing to keep in mind is that the human eye has the ability to detect far more details in a still picture than in a movie. Something that would be detectable when still maybe aren't when things are starting to move.

"Do you ever wonder why PC games/monitor are small yet have much higher resolutions?"
No, cause i know that it is because you sit very close to them.
As AR suggested, print a picture in 720p and one in 1080p and put them about 3-4 meters away from you, then try to make out any difference. It will be hard unless you have cybernetic eyes...

And Sony claimed the PS3 to be 'true HD'. How can it be 'true HD' when their number one game has to run in 480p on an older HDTV? Microsoft has ensured that ALL 360 games run in HD regardless of the matter. The Xbox 360 is the only TRUE HD console. Xbox 360 is the industry leader and will dominate the PS3 in 2008.

Firstly - if you want true HD, then your going to need an HDMI cable.
Most Xboxs at at the moment don't even have a port.
Second, they could make the game in 1080 p or i or whatever, but they choose not to because it would delay release.
Third, I have an HDMI cable, so i get to enjoy it in all its glory...I thank you!

CoD4 and Halo 3 don't even run natively at 720P, how can you say the Xbox 360 is a real HD console? Two of the biggest games of the year and they aren't even real high definition. For crying out loud, they just started included HDMI w/xBox 260 a few months ago! Microsoft doesn't know anything when it comes to Full HD so I would quiet down before you make yourself look like an even bigger idiot.
This is a Euro issue only and it obviously doesn't affect very many people.
