First ever Uncharted: Drake's Fortune review with score

Someone by the Username of Jenslyn87 at Gamefaqs translated a little bit of the review :

"WOW!" That was the first word that came to my mind when playing this game. I've never seen anything like it, and its really quite overwhelming. Every graphical detail of the game has been worked on and I lack words to describe it. When you walk through bushes you actually see them bending and twitching naturally and the water of DFis up there with the very best. I have never seen graphics this good on any console and in my opinion it sets a whole new standard for what can be done graphically in-game ".

GOD DAMN!! I am buying this game day one. The enemies are actually. ..SMART. They've been outflanking me so I had to unlearn everything I learned from previous cover and fire games. You definately can't rely on cover too much, they'll move in on you and things will get black and white reaaaaally quick. The melee combos are so awesome and are actually required in order to live.

A pirate came around to a stone wall I was hiding behind and I did a combo that consisted of a punch, a groin kick where Drake left his foot there to use as leverage for the next kung fu style spin kick. Then another pirate moved in to shoot me while fighting his friend and had his back towards me trying to find his own cover while reloading. I jumped on his back and he and Drake struggled as the pirate's neck was snapped. This game is visceral, and the platforming elements are
awesome too.

Completed the demo 3 times on medium and I'm going through on hard now. Learning a lot of things now, like you can shoot enemies when they're about to throw grenades and they'll stagger and drop it. Sometimes they might evade it and recover, other times they'll take themselves and cohorts out. Anyone who says something negative about the animations either didn't play or didn't pay attention. Enemies bob and duck bullets like crazy. Also when Nate's hurt his demeanor changes until he recovers, I didn't notice it until things kept staying black and white.

Worst part was defintely when the demo ended, I'm surprised how good the shooting felt considering the noticeable lack of rumble when I compare the experience to Gears of War.

this game is freakishly awesome, the neck snapping, the running drop kicks, and I think the most bad ass of it was the combo of punch to the face, followed by 2 stomach punches then a slomo fist to the back of the head as the pirate stumbled to the floor, the AI is tooo smart, I'm used to the idiots that stay in the same spot in some games that when these dudes were scrambling for cover I actually wasted a clip tryna get em by the foot at least, the whole black n white scenes are just as gorgeous, totally unlike the Rainbow 6 Vegas, u can actually see whats going on lol

Yeah guys I really must say the videos did this game no justice, it simply has to be played to be appreciated. One of the best elements is that Nate's just a normal guy. He's not a cookie cutter soldier or some steroid induced hulk in armor with summer movie one liners. This is apparent from the opening cutscene in the plane, which is quite funny I might add. You can tell by his animations as he seems tired and drained from all of the strenuous activities he has to endure yet continues on.

I also must give kudos for the platforming. I know this is just a demo but there are jumps that I'm quite sure I wouldn't have been able to make in other games and ND pulled through. If the story can keep up with the action Naughty Dog has a serious winner, I don't care what anyone says.

Yea, this game is going to be FREAKINNNN SWEEEET!!! I'm just about to go through the demo again for a second time. It's simply the most impressive action game I've played so far... the graphics are EXTREMELY top notch and the gameplay is as solid as it gets.

Like others have said, I was VERY surprised at how smart the AI is... and the game was just fun to play the whole way through. Between guns, grenades, and melee... the action had a perfect balance. And the platforming elements are really sweet so far as well... although this demo is really more heavy on action than platforming.

Just to give you an idea how much I enjoyed the game... I was looking forward to Assassin's Creed more than this before playing the demo. But now Uncharted is my most anticipated purchase, definitely day one. Considering AC still comes out next week, I'll still be picking that up too though ;-).

And i'm finally about to cash in! The demo is awesome, and Nathan moves so fluidly throughout the entire demo. My ONLY quibble in this game is the headshots. When I shoot someone in the head, they are supposes to die, damnit!

The average of that game is actually 90.3 if you add up all the scores to 3512, and then divide by 40 scores.

Well, I really didn't want to check xplosneer's findings but.....

I copied and pasted all of the reviews into Excel and it came up with a score of 90.075.

I wonder why metacritic shows it as an 89 and not a 90.

Edit: @Ju Well, now this doesn't make any sense. Metacritic supposedly weighs each critics score differently. Meaning that everyone opinion is not treated in the same way. Some sites and publications receive a higher weight for their score than lesser known publications. IMO, it would've been better if they had treated each score similarly and just calculated the average. Instead, they treat each individuals opinion differently, giving more weight to certain websites rather than the critic themselves.

"Why a weighted average? When selecting our source publications, we noticed that some critics consistently write better (more detailed, more insightful, more articulate) reviews than others. In addition, some critics and/or publications typically have more prestige and weight in the industry than others."

Still, I don't understand why Games(TM) is weighted so much as to drag down the score one point. IGN, Gamespot, and other well known sites should have had more of an effect than Games(TM).

Anyway, I just think that Metacritics system of grading is flawed. They should treat ever websites review the same and should just calculate the average of the scores.

There is one 60 in there which trashes the "weighted" average, but it is so far off the cluster point that the method they use to calc their "score" is questionable, especially when the next lowest score is 75/100. Uncharted, RIGHT NOW,is an original game. COD4 and Halo3 have the same concepts over and over Bioshock has original gameplay elements and should compete head on with Uncharted.

Once I clicked on the demo to play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, I remembered Naughty Dog's past games. I remembered my first experience playing a Playstation and one of the first games I ever played was Crash Bandicoot at the age of 7 on my birthday. That was one of my favorite games on the PS. And then PS2 came along and with it Jak and Daxter. I also thought of that game and how excited I was when I completed it with 100%. During the demo I was almost speechless, because the Beauty, gameplay, action etc. was so amazingly done. I'm hooked on it now.

I'll be one of the fist to purchase Uncharted: Drake's Fortune the day it releases. I guarantee it. =D

The "lighting" in this game is ridonculous...

I got used to the aiming a lil bit even though I hate PS3 and shooting games because of the controller.

The jumping in this game is fairly accurate. The water fall/water looked amazing on my set. Except I notice that there was some times when a horizontal line went through the top on my screen, well its very fast , I'm not sure what that is, almost like a cut.

This game is looking good, it won't be a first day buy for me as I have too many games on my plate.

Anyhow back to Eternal Sonata and Folklore.

to spin the hype train, this game does deliver what it promised. I have been looking for the tearing and stuttering in the demo and have yet to experiance it. I even concentrated on the waterfall and saw no issues. Granted I have a fairly new JVC 56" HDTV so maybe it is a issue with older SDTV's.

The attention to detail in this game is amazing. The colors are not washed out like have been complained about, of course I have my PS3 set to full color and not limited...maybe some of these reviewers should check that option out.

Argl... just need a moment. OK, back to normal. Man, it is amazing. I was kind of worried, that with all the shooting, jumping and puzzling one of those things might come short, but it doesn't. The shooting is excellent! Even if I suck. I still die at least once in the first big open scene. To many guys coming along. But, Nat just climbs so naturally everywhere. Multiple paths - you can kick that door, but also climb thru a whole right on top beside it - but then you have no chance to retract, when the bad guys show up again. Actually, I like how Nat bends his knee, when he steps on one of the guys after the kill and you walk up to him. Darn, one of these guys tried to sneak up and crawls behind a rock.
Jumping is fairly accurate and again, awesome animations. Its fairly easy to find the path, even though it is a all jungle environment. Hope this stays thru out the whole game. Just amazing. I was hoping it will be. And seems it will keep the promise. Can't wait!

To be honest, since I received my PS3 from my wife a year ago for my birthday I haven't barely used it and have been very disappointed!

This game changes the way I see the system! I have seen some videos and to be honest, I thought it looked good. Just good though.

As someone said above, the videos do not do it justice! This game is incredible.

The graphics have to be the best I have ever seen. Bar none! I have really been on the 360 side until now on the whole graphical issue. This has really made me get my jaw off the floor.

Out of every game I have ever played, this has to be the best graphics ever.

The color is rich, the lighting is fantastic, the motion is great.

The bad guys do bad guy things. They run around, they duck, the use cover and will get you close to death many times!

Such simple touches as Drake's wet clothes is a touch that you would think would have been in games for a long time now.

Walk Drake through a waterfall and his skin, his clothes are wet...and they stay that way until it drys. How freaking awesome is that.

Also, one more thing about the graphics, not only are they extremely well done, very detailed and polished, but I haven't seen a single texture error. In most games, something will flicker or whatever. Not here.

If the rest of this game looks this damn good, we are in for a game that is leaps and bounds above all else.

Oh yeah, another thing, the focusing is amazing.

The controls are simple and straight forward. Needless to say that means they are awesome. At first it seemed awkward...now, the second play through, simple and very accurate. Perfect.

The sound is great as well. The guns have a good thump to them. Just the way it should be.

As of today my friends, I see that Sony has a chance and this is a real system with real possibilities.

It would add to the experience. I know Bioshock, Metroid and Mass Effect don't, but that doesn't mean that more modes would hurt any game. This game could be like something between Gears and Stranglehold in multiplayer, except with some Tomb Raider elements. Has that been done before? IT would be so cool (explore and kill at the same time).

I played it last night and fell in love with it during the opening cut scene the fire on the engines was amazing as was the facial animations and the voice acting. The gun fights were intense and different every time. It was awesome that the enemies were so smart. They caught me off guard many times and my Girlfriend even commented on how she's never seen me die so much in a video game lol. I can't wait for this game!

i haven't even downloaded the demo yet, but i think i wont. this is the one gam,e i wont spoil i've seen everthing i can ever want and i'm sold. i've got this done and paid for, so i'm just gonna walk right into my store on Nov 20th and get it. in the mean time COD4, eye of judgement, Ratchetm, FOLKLORE and AC will al keep me busy. i cant wait. this game is the exclusive of the year for SONY. and i cant wait. my wallet will get no sleep this holiday season just too much to do and early next year will be even worse. after the christmas rush i'll be having to buy DMC4, dark sector, LBP, burnout paradise, MGS4 and KILLZONE 2. it never ends no financial relief what so ever, darn you SONY darn you.

There is not a specific game on XB360 to compare with - so we won't know if it can or can't be done on it.

It seems to be a great title - lot of buzz generated. It will do well, and regardless of what reviewers say or what game is GOTY, we will know in a year's time if this is a benchmark game and if it had replay value.
