GameSpot defends it's decision for giving 7.5 to Ratchet & Clank

That is quite an insult saying that only fans of the series would enjoy this game. I've read a lot of reviews and some never really got into these games, but were able to enjoy it perfectly well. The review complains about too much variety, and now this guy is saying the varieties are not enough to attract gamers. These guys are really grasping at straws. Gamespot has gone downhill ever since Greg Kasavin left for EA.

I think everyone else figured out what the game wants to be....
What I don't think is if Gamespot has decided what is wants to be now that they can't fix this situation because they pissed off alot of people (myself included, who has never played R&C but bought TOD and its a great game, and didnt deserve that poor number)

If that's really the case then they should give the lowest possible score to games in niche genres like turn based card battle games and flight simulators. This reviewer gave a review to which he thought would be cleverly written since he thought, NO ONE COULD READ BETWEEN THE LINES.

Much of the gaming journalism as of late reminds me of Hollywood journalism. It's all about X vs Y, who's better than who, superlatives abound, Can ABC save XYZ this gen, top ten this, comparisons that, etc.

Someone please tell me how any of that trash constitutes good journalism. This isn't the Hard Rock Cafe or the Sunset Strip...we're playing games here. Give us information. Give us honest opinions. I think the game is much, much better then their overall score indicates.

What's funny is that when you read the review, it's very positive, though the score does not reflect their supposed enjoyment of the game. It's not like the score was "bad", it's just not a score that is typically given to a game that is spoken highly about during the majority of the review, much like Ratchet and Clank was.

What's even more strange is the things the reviewer picks to complain about. Too much variety. Since when is "too much" a bad thing? To me, it's not...but hey, to each his own. It's just time to move on from this and enjoy the game.

I'm having a blast with the game, and I'll freely admit that I've never once played a Ratchet and Clank game through, but this one has me hooked and I'm very happy that I picked it up.

So the fact that many have said it looks like a Pixar movie, and the issues of it having no identity (really now?) and it being too easy wont appeal to players outside the core group of fans? If anything that's what will bring in more people, and it being easy will allow people to become attached to the franchise, sorta has the vibe of a casual/hardcore game in my eyes.

They can't defend this...the review sucked. So their reviews are now based on a universal appeal for people who don't usually play these kind of games and looking at reasons why someone wouldn't like the game and calling them "issues"...I'll keep that in mind on their next 9.0 game which most likely will be a FPS with "too much variety", or with Mass Effect. I've got no problem with reviewers giving games low scores providing they back it up with VALID opinions. Which in this case the reviewer didn't and thats where its all started from. I've said it before, I don't use scores and ratings for my judgment, but they have a place because they're opinions, and everyone has a right to one.

Gamespot is a bunch of MS moneyhats. I thought I wasn't going to like the game because to me God of War is an average game and Jak is a average game to me, but I really like Ratchet. I give it an 8 out of 10 because the graphics are inconsistent but the weapon upgrades is genius and the diversity of the levels are so much better than any other game I have played.

R+C has never been one of the best ever games out there.Part of the reason why it has always done so well is because it is so highly polished and is both reasonably amusing and perfectly playable.It's always been a good experience all round but never anything as earth shattering as say Mario64.It's the same with the Jak series.

The lastest R+C is effectively the same template albeit wrapped up in even more gorgeous visuals.

It doesn't do anything wrong in the sense that Resistance also provides a decent if inferior alternative.

Apart from it's execution, it certainly doesn't do anything particularly execptional with regards to it's game mechanics.

It's a good game deserving of much praise and an essential purchase for fans.

Having played the first two, i don't really want to do it all again even if the graphics are wonderfull.

the whole point is xbox games is the same way halo 1 - halo 3 is the same damn game but yet all three gets praised all the negative about the game gets overlooked and gets a blown up score.

gears of war was ok game graphics was good but the story was crappy it was a few technically issues with the game some times the textures would be slow to load and it had some lag issues online but that did not knock the game and halo and gears sure as hell don't appeal to alot of gamers only a million of western gamers. I think the sporadic atmosphere that comes with the perception that the media is hating on the PlayStation has forced this. If you remember a few months ago, EGM/1UP were criticised for negating KillZone 2's A.I.

The internet community is very powerful and although I do not agree with some reviews, because honestly they seem bias, its a shame that companies need to defend themselves and explain themselves everytime this happens. I mean, R&C is just one game guys. It's not like there is a boycott of all PS3 games that are going to be destined to be lower than an 8 out of 10.

IGN and the likes will keep a close eye on how things turn out. I'd hate to see these journalists feel pressured to give bias scores FOR games just to appease people and maintain their site traffic.

Gamespot now cannot do any right. If they re-review the game their integrity is out of the window and thus if another game is given a low score, they'll be pressured to review that game another time. If they don't do anything, they're just going to be criticised and hated upon by the PlayStation community.

Let this be a lesson to them and anyone else. Review games honestly. If you don't like FPS, dont review an FPS. If you don't like Platformers, don't review Platformers. It's quite simple.

But then, Gamespot has always been, at least with the people I'm seeing, the most severe of all the reviewers. They favor certain types of games and it's not the first time that they bring this kind of controversy onto themselves. Remember Zelda? Exactly the same thing, same story.

I've played Ratchet and Clank and this game deserves definitly more than this score. They evaluate gaming solely as a product : Will it sell? Will it appeal newcomers? Will we play that game over and over again?

They put aside the "artistic" side of gaming for the profit of the whole "standarts-must-have-mult iplayer-realistic-graphics-or-i nnovative-stuff", I'm all for this. But hey, can't games be "not" innovative and be fun anyway? Let me give you an example, if Nintendo were to release a new Mario 64esque game (and no, Mario Galaxy doesn't fall into that category, I'm talking about a traditionnal 3D platformer), with the exact same mechanics as Mario 64, a couple of new things added (like Fire Flowers, Capes and Old School Stuff), would Gamespot give a crappy score for that game because it looks too much like it's predecessors? I don't think so. New Super Mario Bros. is an undeniable proof of this.

Why not give the same treatment to the Ratchet and Clank series?

They've made such crappy reviews sometime, just for Metal Gear Solid : Snake Eater. They wrote in the review that the camera was troublesome. Yeah, all right it was. But in Metal Gear Solid : Subsistance, they praised the fact that they fixed the camera, but the game lost points because it's too much the same. MAN! It's the same freaking game, why do you consider it a flaw?

We have to learn with time to make our own reviews, those websites a merely guidelines.

It's possible not to like a game but still acknowledge it for being good at what it does.Halo3 and Bungie do a better job (at least in gameplay terms)than what Insomniac manages with R+C.Insomniac are not the masters of game design in the same way that Nintendo are with it's Zelda or Mario, but they do produce perfectly enjoyable games.

Edge gave R+C an 8, and while that means you automatically add a 1 or 2 to that for lesser sites and mags, it's a much more likely and fair indication of the quality.Gamespot it would appear has been ever so slighly unfair with it's mark.Not by as much as some people like to question.

I reviewed it and have over 700 active readers... I don't score in .5's, either... I score in "LUCAS BARTONS" and so far the feedback I get says it's pretty accurate. "ha" Anyways, the moral of the story here is this... There is a bias. The simple fact is, they don't have to like R&C, neither do you. I loved it and so has nearly 130,000 other people so far who's bought it this past week. When it comes down to other games in the genere, R&C does it better than anyone. That's a fact. When Mario Galaxy goes up to the plate if they give it more than a 7.5 it's a bias. The game is virtually unchanged from the N-64 analog days, other than the use of the remote when you collect star dust. < I've played it. I know. It does nothing new in the genere at all.

Back in the Atari days, and into the 16-bit era there was no such thing. Everyone was a gamer, and if a big series game got a lower than expected review score there weren't any temper tantrums like there are now. Game mags didn't have to suddenly apologize for having an opinion. You either agreed or you didn't, and that was that.
These days it's as if the reviewers have to watch not to upset certain groups of fanboys. I was playing this game last night, im at the pirate stage and this game is really freaking awesome.. From the graphics, gameplay, story, and action.. And the weapons and gadgets are really sweet..

I think that review is spot on to my tastes. I would have given the game a 6.5. Is good but not that good. This is a game that when i finished it i will trade it instantly. But the truth is that i never liked the series too much. Im hoping for a jack and dexter ps3 game.

the latest ratchet probably is the worst one of the series...i mean its pretty and all,but in the end its completly obvious they only spent 8 months making the game...its essentially the same engine,with very little new,except these weird mini games that pop up from time to time and break up the flow...i know some have called rathchet a killer app,but it certainl;y is not...its a good but not great platformer that looks beautiful,but feels stale...they stripped away the online play and the game is on the short side,it also suffers from being very linear..though all the ratchets have that fell purposely..after all this is said and done a 7.5 is a very fair score,in fact thats the most honest review out there.......
