OPM: Killzone 2 is ahead of anything on consoles

The Official Playstation Magazine in the UK had the pleasure of recently jetting off to Amsterdam to get a world exclusive hands on with the hotly anticipated Killzone 2. Obviously as one might expect, after some time with the creators and the game itself, the OPM writers were left amazed and remarking that Killzone 2 is a 'notch ahead' of anything else being done on consoles at the moment, which is ultimately a very good thing for PS3 owners.

I read or watch this game I just get more and more excited!

I don't doubt OPM's claims that it is far beyond anything on consoles, I mean look at it, even the biggets xbot (besides the mart and such) can not denie how amazing the visuals are! Even Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is like this aye.

The first time I saw Killzone 2, was that CG trailer, I had no faith, I was like "nar they can't pull that off, as if, they're lying on this one". Then I watched the in-game footage...........and damn I reckon it looks better, i mean the blood, is way better, the whole thing, it just looks so immersive and real. This is one of the games I'm most looking forward to, up there with MGS4 and Alan Awake!

look much more visceral than the 05 one, but I must admit, the only thing I envy from the '05 trailer was the texture quality. It's quite simply on a different level than what we have now, so are the particle effects, fire, and explosions for that matter.

Everything else though...rips into that '05 trailer, and harshly at that. I really hope they get the textures up to speed, along with the rest of course...b/c that trailer from 2 years ago still makes my eyes bleed.

good sir i believe you're right, the only thing this game lacks from the CG trailer was it's textures, I mean don't get me wrong Killzone 2 textures look absolutely amazing for the level of development they are at, but it's not up to speed with the CG trailer. Otherwise.......damn I'm thirsty for some Killzone 2.

OH OH OH AND has anybody heard the rumour...its a bit old but it thought I'd bring it up again, the rumour about multiplayer, and what it'd be like? If that turns out to be true.......Killzone 2 will be revolutionary.

And they havent announced any features, all they've said is here is the game, heres some small snippets, and this is what one small part of a level looks like.

And they keep on saying "omg I want to tell you so much....but I can't but we'll reveal things later". That's something I'd tell my mate if I just shagged Halle Berry but her husband said he would shoot me if I told anyone.

120 Developers working on this game, as you can see I'm working my self up and getting quite excited over this game. I think, rightly so. SO EXCITED!! :D

I may be PS3 fanboy, but right now I'm enjoyinh BioShock and Strangehold on my 360 and will be getting Stuntman and PGR4 soon. Can't wait to buy Wii and PS3 to play Metroid Prime 3 and MotorStorm.

To be perfectly honest as a 360 and ps3 owner who was recently dissapointed by the overhyped mess of halo(take that as you will as i was never interested in the multiplayer and the single player was far too mediocre) i have to say i am not that hyped for killzone. I am honestly more hyped for uncharted drakes fortune, Metal Gear solid and GT5 prologue. Mass effect am not so hyped for but am gonna try it not a big rpg fan but never really played any rpg's to beging with so never knw.

With only seeing 1 level and all the impressions and previews for the game being based solely on the graphics and the game engine i simply havnt been able to give the game the full thumbs up. Remember the original on ps2 was amazing graphically however still had many issues. I am pretty confident those same issues will not repeat itself however i will need to see more to give the game that full thumbs up. All the things they have shown have been amazing so far. They have the best blood effects and is far ahead of anything being done on anything with the blood effects. 2008 will be a great yr for ps3 hopefully killzone 2 will factor in that greatness

I just want a good game in my eyes, no one else's. If the whole world hates Killzone 2 and I love it, then guess what...GG has done their job.

I still don't understand why people hold another's opinion on a pedestal above their own. I like hearing the opinions of others, it makes for good debate, but to the end user, there's nothing like hands on experience. Would you rather play Halo 3, or watch someone else beat it for you?

With that said, it's an entirely different squad, ballpark, and season my friend...the evidence is there for you to see. If you don't think it looks good, then that's your prerogative. Doesn't mean we shouldn't, and a negative review won't mean anyone else is wrong either.

The thing is, this isn't calculus, the statistics people here are bragging about are absolutely nothing concrete. They're literally allowing their thoughts to be dictated by corporate whores. This might sound odd but COD4 and Killzone 2 arn't realy comparible because of style.

I find Killzone 2 going for that over the top gritty metalic image, where everything has to look uber cool (which it does :P). The Design of the game is also very cinematic, they feeling your playing a movie.

Where is COD4 is going for realistic look. The style is very diffrent, you have to act like if you where in that real life situation. In some instict is also very cinematic, but feels more real.

So why be excited about Killzone 2??? The first Killzone was a major failure in every way. The sony fanboys went googoo gaga when they showed the first level of Killzone 2. To me it looked exactly like the first level of Call of Duty 3. In fact, I think the graphics look exactly like the rest of the war torn street games like the Call of Duty franchise or the Metal of Honor games. All 'official' magazines are just ass kissing machines for their respective console, but dude, don't hang your trust in sites like IGN or Gamespot. The latter who gave Def Jam Icon (one of the sh1ttest fighting games I ever played) the same score as Virtua Fighter 5 (one of the greatest).
Most of these online review sites are just a bunch of bias nerds with agendas. Some have financial reasons, others are just fanboys (1up).
What I'm getting at is, just because some nerd gives a game 7 out of 10, does not mean it is not great.
Time has shown that all in all, reviews DO NOT make a game. And nor do sales figures, you know what may tickle your fancy. I happen to think Killzone 2 looks great, and some sad sack Xbot won't dissuade me from that either.

The were miles in the air in the landing craft and they paused the game and floated the camera around the whole level in realtime. The miles of terrain underneath could have easily been a trick 2D background, but no, the whole level was right there with everything in it going on regardless of what you were doing. The sheer scale and scope of the action is whats so impressive. If you cant see that, youre not a gamer, you're a pretender.

I've never seen so much hype and fans for a series that really was a flop, and I should know I bought into the hype last time. I was telling my Xbox owning friends who had Halo that Killzone was going to blow Halo 2 away. That the graphics were awesome. Well the game came out, I bought it and then felt super let down. The game while pretty was boring, had some serious path finding issues and didn't even let you jump.

Most annoying of all was the damn wailing the Helghast made each time they died and hearing their stupid leader ramble on over and over as background noise to some stages. While graphically the game was very impressive, game play wise it was a dud. Hell Snowblind on the PS2 was TONS better!

So excuse my lack of excitement and plain out astonishment at tons of new Killzone fans, when the first game was mediocre at best. I've learned in times that fantastic graphics do not make a good game, just a pretty one. Call me crazy but I play games to have a good time and enjoy myself, not look at it drooling at the graphics while the game play blows. I really do hope that GG can pull out an upset and make the sequel something special, but from what I've seen it's another case of the first game. Amazing visuals that no one can deny, if you do you're blind. But game play that looks like everything else out there. I wish them the best of luck but I'm not sold till I see reviews. Pretty or not, it needs to be a great game that pushes FPS's in combat and story.

Its funny how the brand loyalty runs so deep for some of you, especially when MS abandoned their last system without even a look back, yet they get a pass, not only that but you love them for it.

I know logic doesn't work on this site too well, but many of you talk about past performance, lets talk about MS's past performance. They release the original XBOX to lack luster reviews, come out with HALO (A really good game, see, I can give compliments about a system I don't own), and then a few other games here and there. But when the new 360 was announced, MS promised to continue support for the original XBOX, which turned out to be lie. They said that there was no problem with the 360, turned out to be a lie too, one that affected most 360 owners, and they treated their customers like crap until the last moment, then appeased with an extended warranty. And you love MS for that? Talk about lemmings. And you have the nerve to talk about Sony hype? Take a look at MS before you talk about another company, you might not like what you see, and it might give you something significant to bash and post about, maybe that way they will stick with the 360 for more than 3 years.

KZ might not have been the great game that a lot of the MEDIA made it out to be. I CHALLENGE ANY XBOT TO FIND A QUOTE WHERE A SONY REP, OR A GG REP SAID THAT KILLZONE 1 WAS A HALO KILLER. In fact, HALO 2 was the worst of the series according to many and none have achieved the quality of the original HALO, but I have heard many of my friends say that HALO 3 is better than 2 and has improved, so why can't KZ2 be better than their first attempt?

GG has stated that they listened to many of the comments and criticisms about the first KZ and are implementing changes, that is a promising statement, and one the very few developers would admit to doing (See. HALO 3 match making). If you were all real gamers, you would realize that HALO was not Bungies firs foray into gaming, they had other projects before that were not up to HALO's standards, but they improved over the years and learned from their mistakes, again, some homework for you know it all fanboys.
All the reviews and issues I saw with the first KZ were technical issues, such as frame rate etc., but from what I read, the game itself was solid with potential, and many people enjoyed the game including myself regardless of what the reviews said. GG has a lot more resources this time around, and a more capable system, Its funny how you all don't learn anything from past experiences, you just spew whatever comes to mind.
A game that comes to mind right now is Assassins Creed, at E3 critics were bashing the He!! out of it about the fighting and technical issues that were apparent, now you look at the game footage and the game is once again one of the most promising games soon to hit. People love to jump the gun, I hear a lot of praises for MASS EFFECT, but none of you have played it, yet that doesn't stop you from touting it as one of the advantages the 360 has over the PS3, what hypocrites.
It looks to me like with KZ the BOTS are concerned about what this game might mean for the future of the PS3.
Its like a guy who you don't particularly like, he has a girlfriend and she is fine, Rather than compliment his choice in women, you talk about how her hair seemed a bit off, or she wasn't tall enough, or her toe nail polish didn't match her dress, but you know what, it doesn't change the fact that she is beautiful and desirable even to you no matter how much you deny it (Your just being a hater).
This game is in good hands, GG now has something to prove and a man who has a goal is more dangerous than one with nothing to prove. KZ2, and has the potential to shock the balance of this so called console war. Its still months away and they already have an excellent looking product, and have stated on many occasions that they are committed to polishing up all aspects of the game.

Its funny, IceWake posted earlier a plea and predictions about the game, and he knows nothing about it. Its was pathetic, like when your a child and a friend does something to you and you try to get all your other friends to be mad at them too, and not talk to them. All these fools are pathetic, most of the time I can hold back on having to write something about them but sometimes it is so blatant their ignorance and shameless stupidity that I have to write something to try and expose these fools for what they are, lifeless, classless, overweight, hate filled burdens on society. Anyway, as far as following a track record, you're absolutely right, and I agree. A track record and past performance is important, because it is certainly indicative of what COULD happen, but latching onto that past is just as foolhardy as those that disregard the past and are blindly optimistic to the future.

Like Cali said, Halo 3 apparently alleviated many of the shortcomings of 2, and gamers and critics alike having been raving about it. Just by that achievement alone, can you really hold everyone in contempt with a positive outlook on the game?

Honest opinion here: I think the game looks great so far, it's obvious(much like Halo 3) that they are at least making an effort to fix what was wrong with the last game. They even added a jump for crying out loud, but I digress. Anyway, I don't like the quality of the textures, and the A.I. is largely hit or miss. I either see bouts of brilliance or utter stupidity from them. The particle, fire, and smoke effects are laughable compared to what can and has already been done(Hell, the smoke in Resistance looks better if you ask me) at that.

A fair and balanced critique from a Sony gamer. Now, with all that said, I'm optimistic b/c of Sony's patience with the team, and how much time, money, and manpower they've invested this time around. Yes, it could be a flop, but I hope it ends up being good. As a gamer, I don't see why anyone would WANT this game to turn out bad to be honest, that's just childish(not saying that you are, I'm just generalizing).

@ below: Well, I can relate to that. NBA 2K8 has left a very bitter taste in my mouth...needless to say I'm cautious about their next offering. Hopefully it turns out well, though.

Its funny how at first it was the graphics for this game, all the bots were like "that can't be done, they are setting themselves up for failure, the target render is too good to be true". Once they were pwned by the E3 demonstration the focus became game play, which in all honesty cannot be judged at this point. What next, when the game play is solid? Complaining about the box art or the menu? Or maybe the font they use in the game. Anything to keep from admitting that GG might be on the right track and this game could be another positive move for Sony and their fans.

The glowing hands on-previews this game has received from the media. So I don't understand why they still make references to KillZone 1, criticising the game play of this and even dismissing the visuals as CGI and another group, remarkably, as COD4 looking better. what is the reality. is it that THE PS3 has sold just over 6.1 million in 10 months for being in the market. coming to the market a year behind and sold more than half the user base of the 360 currently at 11+ million at 600 bucks. or is it that the reality is that the PS3 has a 0.1 percent failure rate verses XBOX 360's 33+% of defective hardware... the fact that people once thought that parralell processing was not possible on the ps3 due to design of architect (Gabe Newell and John Carrmack) only to be disproved by GG with killzone 2. The fact that when sony said the machine support games at resolutions of up to 1080p, and MS said they wont have any especially at launch, when Sony launched with 5 games that ran at that resolution, and has a portfolio that has 27 games running at 1080p, NGS and Lair, RR7, FNR3, just to name a few are doing it. or is it that reality has it that Halo3 was touted as the game that ran natively in 1080p only to be revealed that it didn't even run at HD resolutions and couldn't even hold a steady frame rate. which is it. i dont think we've lost sight of reality. i think MS has certainly distorted yours and many of the ones who hold MS loyalty when it comes to gaming.

and in terms of balance when it comes to fankid bahavior. all the fankids that troll around here tip the scale ten tims over. PS3 fankids are greatly out numbered by their xbox fankid counter parts so there was no balance to begin with. had this site required a system that required you to hav a PSN from sony to get in and post we would never have this rubbish thats going on today.

developers are seeing the growth in PS3, and they are coming to grips. thats the reality of this and more and more we are seeing Sony's vision of sustaining a ten year life cycle for it's platform. games on it's first year coming from exclusive first party and 3rd party are showing out the 360's second and 3rd gen games. PS3 fankids though they might be. arent the onces with lost of reality... no my friend it's the trolls and extremist xbox fankids that take it up the butt from the greatest copycat of all. get numbers theres no need for that. a console 10 months into it's life not even a year and 200 bucks above it's main perceived competitor (xb0x 360) sold in the same volumes for 5 months in 2 regions before going world wide in march and since then has been selling at the same rate the 360 was selling at in it's first year at 600 bucks. fact.

and fact #2 my TV supports 1080p i've said numerous of times on the forums here. and just to let you know it a 56 inch DLP 1080p set. i dont need to brag but since you so blatantly are quick to say you dont think i have own one. i work. i'm far from middle class and i'm a bachelor. so with proper bugeting it's not farfetched for a 22 year old my self to own such a luxery. while still paying for school and car payments, laptops and morgage. thats just how it runs. though i wont speak for everyone because i can only speak for me. so thanks for trying..

fact three. though 1080p may be a selling point for sony's console, i never onces stated above that it's the sole reason consumer purchase the system. though there are some who do because like myself they happen to own a TV that supports it. I was simply listing yet another fact of reality that MS clearly stated that sony wont have a PS3 game to support 1080p at launch, when in fact Sony's PS3 released with 6 disc based BD games out of 23 with that level of resolution..

Killzone 2 embodies why the ps3 is ALOT more powerful than the 360, bluray is needed, the cell processor is unbelievable and at this stage of the ps3's life-cycle you can only imagine what games will be like at the end of its life-cycle

The cell processor is the differences which makes some ps3 games impossible to do on the xbox 360. So far i've seen 3 games which are absolutely impossible to do on the 360:

-Gran Turismo 5
-Killzone 2
-LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet??? Uh, yeah. Because like Killzone 2, the amount of physics involved in LittleBigPlanet is something only the cell processor could do, and is simply impossible on the 360. And im 99% certain i will be saying the same for Final Fantasy XIII because the graphical level of that game will surpass any 360 game. With ease. As will all exclusive AAA ps3 games in the future.

I think we've reached that time again, where graphics are at a sweet rate. I mean there isn't many games now that are coming, that you could really call, bad graphically, unless from a very small company or just a piss poor port from another console(hmm hmm)

I've played the cryis beta and while it is stunning, i'm more interested where they go with the singleplayer. I've got enough mp to last me forever:)

I think Killzone 2 looks mental, with alot going on, it looks well meaty?

For me graphically atm i'm very impressed with uncharted, probably more so then cod4,r&c etc.

I just love the style of it, 3rd person, nice array of weapons, excellent fighting dynamics, graphics are great, and overall it looks to be alot of fun.

To the doubters of killzone2, i say shame on you. 2gb per level is insane. and while some of the textures might not be the highest, they certainly don't look bad at all. I'm guessing once they'v finished the game, optimised the code, and put another level of shine on it. It will be on another league. I for one cannot wait to see other levels, weather fx, snow,rain. And story wise.

thats why the best selling game is fall of man, a FPS, on the ps3? haha. FPS arn't my favorite genre, but if it stands out or brings something new to the table I get interested. Killzone 2 looks like it will have a FPS graphicilly we may have never seen before. IF the AI holds up then we have a golden game. The ps3's Cell processor really shows it's weaknesses in KZ2 and Uncharted. I've watched numerous videos were the A.I. is "retard" level.

What some people don't know about the Cell is that branch prediction is not reliable. Branch prediction is very important for gaming as a whole. A.I., U.I., control, and many other small but important game functions require branch coding. "Branch hint" is the most reliable code for branch intensive code, and it only has a 50/50 chance of working and when it misses there is a 7 cycle penalty. It is blatantly obvious in all of the KZ2 and Uncharted vids that I have seen that these games are hit and miss due to the limations of the Cell.

The PPU has full branch prediction, the SPU's use branch hints. If you need full branch prediction (which means you failed in your linear algebra class, and don't know what matrices are...), you can use the PPU.

Guys don't worry, the 360 will also have plenty of great looking games and and around good games, so no need to bash Killzone 2.

I know it must be hard to look at something like this game and know that you will have to step up and spend 400$ or 500$ if you want to play it, but thats the way it works. ;)

Killzone 2 is ALREADY ahead (graphically) of anything on 'next-gen' consoles that we can play at the moment, and its still AT LEAST 6/7 months away. So imagine how it will look like when its done! Guerrilla has already said there was a bug with the textures that was already fixed, and also that there more then half the animations are still missing, so this game has still lots of ways to improve.

Also, to the ppl who say it looks drab and grey:
1) we've only seen ONE PART of ONE level of the game
2) did you moan about Gears of War looking grey?

Seriously, Halo 3 is colorful, Ratchet & Clank is colorful, Uncharted is colorful, Killzone 2 isn't. What's the fvcking problem? It a design option. DO you actually think Guerrilla couldn't make the game colorful? Sh!t, have you seen the 25 minutes walkthrough where they show how the game looks like with post-processing off? It looks like someone just turned all the damn lights on!

i am anticipating this game, and it definetly looks good even if its in 720p(supposedly at least) which i frankly don't care(look how good HS looked like in 720p).

It's a lie though to say it's a notch above anything else on a console.
I mean it's a far cry from many games out on Xbox 360 and PC's. It has potential though, but currently it's maybe an 7.0 out of 10. I think it's much better that Uncharted DF.
It lacks proper textures, it bottlenecks up but that's an internal ps3 flaw, it also has stupid AI at the moment. Fix these issues and it'll definately be a great game for the PS3, well provided that it's a complete game including a stellar online multiplayer.

Only time will tell, and sony seems to be taking there time. 4 years production on KZ2 and MGS4 isn't a good thing. At this rate, this may be the only great games for the ps3 that come out until 2010.

Sony and company, fix the game.

I've been saying this in every Killzone 2 news, yes its looks amazing and I can tell its pretty linear like most Shooters are. The fact is, what is this new stuff that it doe? and why should "Xbots" be so mad?

To me, Killzone 2 will be a good shooter but nothing amazing as you guys hype it up to be. It is a corridor shooter from the looks of it, with pretty graphics. I'll probaly get alot of disagress, ignores and bubbles taken because people just can't see this.

Also like to point out that its OPM, they are bound to say this like OXM are bound to say that Halo is the greatest thing ever. Maybe if the people on this site weren't so annoying, weren't such fanboys then they will see this. Killzone 2 must have good gameplay to be a good game, good graphics do not make a good games.

I think Killzone is going to be an amazing game. Great graphics, good AI, good gameplay and hopefully a good story..

Imo its a new next-gen game compared to Halo 3 that's quite the same as Halo 2, a part from som minor graphical changes and some new wepones, maps etc..

Killzone one sucked and it looks to that this is going to be a shooter that really shows off the power of the PS3 =)

The reason why you don't really hear much about haloatians is becasue it was not chosen to be in the bible though the book was created around jesus's time.

In haloatians 5:12-53 however He does elude to the coming of KZ2.

elite360, not to question your "facts" but the "360 selling 12,000,000 units" fact seems a bit fishy smelling, you know, since microsoft reports units shipped (as in out to retailers) and not actual units sold, you know like true manufactures as Nintendo and Sony report, so your 360 actually sold more like 9mil after 2.5 years compared to the 6mil PS3's sold in 1 year. Other than that, everything else you said was, well, a foolhearty attempt at copying an earlier post.

Let's cut the crap KZ2 is facing halo 3 (because of this system war)and it's kinda mopping the floor with it, in terms of visual grunt.

And buddy it doesn't work like that. For one Gears 2 would be the third game or so the devs have developed on the 360(i'm counting UT3, whenever it comes out).

Epic have had more time to familiarise themselves with the 360's ins and outs, so have a lot of devs.

Compare that to geurilla's first ps3 game; their first go at designing a game on a much more complex system.
You wouldnt compare kz2 to gears2, you'd compare it to whatever comes out on 360 around 08 ish (i.e. alan wake). It'd make more sense to compare Resi 5 to Gears 2 and bioshock 2 lol.

In mass effect most of the backdrops(which look pretty samey btw) look plain, most of the attention seems to be on the character models, which look very awesome, but every now and then not so much.

i remember on gamespot there was this tool who kept saying the ps3 couldnt do gears lol. then came uncharted

Killzone Gameplay vs. Gears CG isn't the best thing to compare. And for god's sake, use HD captures. Downsampling hides a lot of issues, such as low anti-aliasing in Gears.

I actually think Killzone 2 will be just mehhh, and the real system seller will be LBP. I mean every exclusive cant even be done on the Xbox. If the PS3 passes the Xbox in sales (which it will soon if MGS4 is as good as its looking to be, along with LBP and Killzone.) Games will stop being ported from the Xbox360 to the PS3, eliminating any advantage 360 had before because of developer laziness. If you want 'dated' why not look at say... Halo 3.
