If this influenced the Warhawk review, that is just not acceptable. I'd hope that any editor would not hold their personal biases towards the review marks of games on other systems.

Also, the way he wrote this makes him seem quite unprofessional. He rips on Sony quite aggressively.

I've changed the post so it's clearer.

To sum it up: no editor should let their personal bias affect a review. If they do, they are not good reviewers.

I'm not defending this guy at all, I'm criticizing him if he ripped Warhawk because of his bias.

People who has yet to play Warhawk should also realize that many people who had played the Beta version said it was great and needless to say, one of the most addictive games ever...and that was just the test version. So that's a good sign that the game would at least meet everyones' expectation.

People have bias as its human nature. objectivity is something you are born with then lose as you get corrupted. All you guys can rant and rave all you want. XBOX live has been on the market for over five years. To build up the infrastructure it has now took a long time.

Are you honestly going to claim that the PSN is superior after being on the market for only 9 months??

XBOX live is offering an overwhelming amount of content every week....demos, betas, games, and movies....not to mention XBLA is the first of it's kind. Live is one of the major selling points of the 360.

PSN may have it's day one day but to claim it is better than Live(at the moment)....is a flat out lie.

I hope with this we can all realize that having labels like "professional" and "editor-in-chief" doesn't negate the fact that individuals are still human, and thus, possess bias. That's as far as I'll go with that.

Anyway, as the editor-in-chief of a Playstation magazine, it's this guys responsibility to be enthusiastic about what's on the horizon for the platform. His comparison is senseless, as it essentially says that anything Sony is planning with Home will be beaten by MS. Sorry, but I just don't see it that way, and here's why.

Home is different from what MS is offering. I won't say better or worse, just different. With that in mind, comparing the things Home may offer to Achievements and Gamerscore is very narrow-minded...this guy would do well to think outside the box. Home has so much potential for all sorts of different implementations, yet he's thinking only in terms or scores, stats, and numbers. That's just silly.

The two are different services for a reason, and from the outside looking in, it's VERY commendable on Sony's part that they're not trying to offer up a dead-ringer for XBox Live, as much as the service has been hailed. Besides that, common sense should tell us that it won't be seen "completely out of sight" as he says. When you look around the internet there are several different online gaming clients that thrive in their own way, none really over-shadowing the other. Battle.Net is my personal favorite, but there's more out there than that.

What I gather from his opinion though is that he would rather Sony make an absolute carbon copy of Live and play catch up...I personally don't like the thought of that at all. Simply put, home is something different, and it's important to be able to differentiate yourself from a competitor and not seem as if you're trying to ride their coat-tails.

Home is poised to provide a very unique experience to PSN users, and I really don't see why it can't co-exist with Live. There will be much more to Home than trophies and posters, and if it's well received by the community, then the sky will be the limit for the virtual content that can be added. Suggestions will be heard, and I'm sure that good ones will be implemented. The PS blog is just the first small step.

Give a game a bad review, that's cool, not everyone will like everything, but when you're the top journalist at a publication, why would you try to turn away the intended fanbase? I'd love to see the results if Maxim and Stuff took a similar approach.

They should be reporting and covering the positive future of the PS3, not tearing it down based upon an opinion of the competition. Journalism should be fair and impartial. Reviews need subjectivity, that's obvious, but he shouldn't be covering up and coming features with such negativity. In his position, he holds entirely too much sway to be exhibiting such behavior.

Though I agree with you that David Jaffe bashes the competition, he does so because he's a developer within the payroll of Sony. But then again even he criticizes Sony for their failures. Second, the developers of Splinter Cell do also, but subtly, bash Sony. Hell, the creator of Ninja Gaiden or the developer at EA Sports can bash all they want for all I care. But being an editor in chief of PSM and using that position to bash is a different story all together.

My point is that even though I believe that he has the right to voice his opinions outside of Sony's tag lines, it was very inappropriate the way he did his opinions, like what chrno said. It was more a bashing, just as D3l33t stated. How would you feel if I become the editor in chief of Xbox magazine and start saying that Xbox 360s are "cheap products that go heat-up, with MS probably doing this on purpose so they can sell more new 360's to replace their broke down units"? I guess that the answer to that one is pretty bad, isn't it?

As far as Rob Smith having family, I'm sorry but because of his overtly biased views, there would be too much conflict of interest that may negatively affect the magazine in whole. Therefore, IMO, he would have to go. It sucks that he has a family to feed, but if a cop has too much racial bias, he won't be able to do his duty as intended.

If you cannot understand (you don't to agree with any of us, just as long as your clearly see our viewpoints), then there really nothing that I can do.

Well guess what. I played the FULL game. Many, many, many people on NeoGAF played the full game. It was an incredible experience, and despite the many beta-bugs it shows unbelievable promise to become the PS3's online crown for the months to come.

Should buy Warhawk based on the opinion of some PS3 fanboys who played the beta? And that you guys are more qualified to review an incomplete version of the game? You wont ever see me praise a single game on this site that I havent experienced in its final retail form first hand. For the non-fanboys now, let's just see how those things will turn out... Cause Warhawk, after the beta, has nothing to prove for me. Lair, I was complaining even before reviews about don't having a multiplayer and the controls, that could turn to be annoying (which don't looks like to be the case), so I would wait for the demo anyway... And the Home is a good idea, but we still need to wait and see how it will turn out (and, as a community, how it develops itself in the next year, cause, you know, communities need time to stabilize).

The most funny thing is most of the bad reviewers, before even the preview, in the first impressions and going on reports was all positive. Would be way funny going on a PSM guy and asking "What part of your mag I should consider as crap? The old good-mouthing or the newer bad-mouthing? Oh wait... Take reviews like a grain of salt. I would say from all the positive feedback I've been hearing from PS3 owners playing the Warhawk beta it deserves a better review.

From knowing some game journalists they make those reviews so that you can use their advice to know if you really want to spend your hard earned cash on a game.

each one will have games i want to play on it (ie, Smash Bros, Heavenly Sword, Mass Effect, to name only a few), and you'll just come off as the most ridiculous hypocrite and or idiot, when you end up buying the very system you were rallying against, or badmouthing a game that is obviously awesome (for example; Bioshock just plain *ROCKS. period. deal with it PS3 fans. *I want the game on my PS3 too, and it'll probably hit it sooner or later, but to say that game is lame is just...well, *STUPID. same goes for 360 fans sh*tting on Heavenly Sword. yes, Lair is a dud, but all signs are pointing to Heavenly Sword as being *AWESOME. accept it and move on.)

anyway, this Rob Smith guy seems like a douche, but *NOTHING is going to deter what my senses told me when i played the Warhawk Beta; the game is *FUN (remember? "fun" is the word certain fanboys throw out there when a game has pretty graphics, but the moment a game *ISN'T looking gorgeous, despite it's excellent gameplay, people will still crap on it).

here's my take on Warhawk, after playing the Beta: 9/10.

why? well, i'm a single player gamer at heart. i was really interested in Warhawk when it was both single and multi-player. when it moved to multi-player only, i was bummed, and it fell off my radar.

oddly enough, i decided to register for the Beta anyway, just for the hell of it (i never get into *ANYTHING, so i figured it couldn't hurt to get into it). surprisingly enough, i landed in the Beta, and i'm obviously going to give it a try. why not, right?

so, i played the Beta, and became *HOOKED. and i'm a guy that can't stand online, competitive multi-player, as i've stated before.

the controls of Warhawk are smooth (i used the analog stick, as the motion controls, while responsive, and, overall, pretty cool, had too much of a learning curve, and i only had 7 days on the Beta. i'll play in depth with the motion controls when i pick up the game next week).

as for gameplay, as fun as it is to engage in dogfights, i actually enjoyed the ground combat the most. i'm a kind of tactical, support player, so i like to aid my teammates by things like covering fire, sniping, *WHATEVER helps us score the points. i very rarely venture out and try to, for example, capture the flag myself (it seems like *EVERYONE wants to be the hero and capture the flag, leaving our base unprotected, so i stick back and blast folk trying to take *OUR sh*t). i do admit that it's cool putting the Warhawk in hover-mode, and raining fire down on my enemies, but running around, avoiding incoming fire and laying down your own is frantic, especially with 39 other players running about doing the same thing.

deathmatches can be a bit hectic with that many folks going at it, but team matches are a lot of fun, and my personal favorite.

as for modes, there are quite a few, and i'll see if i can remember them;

Deathmatch: self explanatory
Team Deathmatch: ditto
Capture the Flag: yeah, you guess it; self explanatory.
Zones: i wasn't too clear on this mode, but it seemed that there were points on the map that your team was fighting to take over. as your team wins, the "zone" gets larger.
Dogfight: all Warhawks, all the time. fun, if you enjoy Top Gun. i admit, "Danger Zone," was in my head each time i played this mode.

and i'm sure there are more, but i can't think of them right now. i stuck to a lot of team deathmatches and ctf, but i played some Zones, dogfight, and deathmatch too occasionally.

in short:

Graphics: 8.5 - the game looks *GOOD. especially on a 40" 720p LCD Samsung.

Gameplay: 9.5 - the game is fun. period. the steep learning curve for the motion controls brings it down .5, but thankfully, you can turn it off, so it's not really *TOO much of a detriment.

Sound: 9 - from my memory, the sound is solid enough. no complaints. unless you count the incessent whining of 14 year olds over the headset as a bad thing. oh wait, i *DO.

Replayability: 9.5 - i kept coming back to this game over and over again during my 7 days with it, and when i wasn't playing it, i was *THINKING about playing it.

Overall: 9 - though it's tempting to dock it .5 for not having a single -player component. i expect, however, for some single-player missions to be added as downloadable content at a later date (i think Incog even said as much in an interview).

and that's my take on the game from what i've played.

i'm a Playstation fan, yes, but honestly, i'm just not into these types of games, and yet Warhawk converted me.

not only to multi-player games, but to flight combat games in general. i'm an action/adventure, rpg fan at heart (as my PS1, PS2, and X Box libraries can attest to), so for me, being converted to a multi-player only flight combat game is a *BIG DEAL for me.

perhaps my lack of experience with the genre has made me dig the game more than a seasoned vet, but it doesn't matter. *I THINK it's a good time.

This is blatantly poor vetting by PSM. This guy is worse than some of the 360 fanatics on this site, and that is saying a lot.

Now I am not saying that everything about Sony should be praised, but this is taking it a bit too far. He is bashing HOME when A) its not out, and B) its an IP that is made to be improved over time. Its like if everything should have been implemented from the beginning in his opinion. The PS3 is not even a year old and he can't look past his biased views to realize that.
Even a 360 should see the problem with this, and I suspect if the same thing were to occur with a 360 publication, your outrage would be just as intense.

Its one thing to say that the PSN needs improvement and HOME initially won't deliver everything that is needed, its another to completely write the thing off without even seeing the finished product.

Little strong arm tactics and mock tough love stances don't fool me one bit, this guy obviously needs to stick to 360 related material. The fact that he had to come out with a response shows that even he knows there is something wrong with his position, what he doesn't realize is that many people have computers now and don't have to rely on his half@ssed publication for gaming news. He is very stupid being so biased in a magazine that targets PS3 fans, its bad business like a heathen running a bible shop, it just don't mix.

I'm all up for honest criticism, but when someone who is supposed to be professional begins to act like this guy has, it becomes clear that their analysis is worthless.

It's bad enough that they hired someone who stated in a professional interview "Xbox will Kill PS2 (teehee)" to be the editor-in-chief of a Playstation Magazine, but to also allow an intern to write shoddy reviews that affect hundreds of thousands of gamers?

The intern gave Warhawk, a game that countless Beta participants have deemed one of the best multiplayer games ever released, a meesly 6.5. The funny thing is that Randy Nelson, who gave a justifiable low score for Lair, stated "Sony's other PS3 title reviewed this issue, Warhawk, is actually a much deeper experience - and it's multiplayer only." Not surprisingly, intern Tom Holoien makes the following powerful observations:

"There are no bots to play against."
"The game costs $60. It comes with a $45 bluetooth headset, but we have to wonder if it's worth the price."
"The Warhawks aren't superior to other vehicles" In fact, half the review is spent complaining that the Warhawk vehicle "doesn't have enough armor to protect against rockets". This guy obviously wouldn't survive 5 seconds in Halo since the vehicles in that game are ALSO vulnerable to rocket attacks. It's called balance. Yeesh.

Oh yeah, he also complained that he couldn't aim. Any Warhawk Beta testers in here that can support this guy's claim that aiming is impossible? =P

but this guy has a responsibility based on the position he's in. He's essentially the figurehead of a Playstation magazine. A title like that holds a lot of influence, and as a professional, he should use a bit of discretion with what he's saying.

In all honesty though, his opinion is stated in a manner that makes it seem that he hasn't even looked at Home or Sony's strategy from a different angle. Is that his integrity along with, now, every review of every PlayStation 3 title will be in question and challenged by PlayStation owners. Personally I was never impressed with the "money hat" accusations some people were directing towards 360 Editors and sources; with the intent to intentionally and immorally downplay the quality of PS3 titles. I thought it was just nonsense and an excuse the fanboys used.

However this man being exposed will actually have a bigger negative impact on the industry from our perspective, than a low review of Warhawk would ever. This isn't good news for anyone, it doesn't matter what console you owe because this is evidence to suggest that the people we rely on our information and knowledge on, are themselves fickle and immature fanboys.

Whatever the reason being, it's very worrying and the honesty of every editor and company will now be put under the spotlight because of this. I honestly do not know how to take this further; I put my trust on such reviews on whether or not I want to spend my money on these games, but if they're now lying through their teeth then what is the point anymore?
