SCEE Founder On PlayStation 3 Failure Rates

SPOnG was informed at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival yesterday that the PS3 has an amazingly low "default rate" at "around 0.2%", according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe founder, Chris Deering.

If true, this is a hugely impressive statistic and is considerably less than the industry standard of three to five percent.

But I think this is much further below the standard than previously thought, since Xbox 360's failures have dragged the figure upwards at an alarming rate.

But well here in europe anyway when it does break sony organise to pick up your console next day and have a new one with you the next day, which is awesome..

this remains to be seen if it continues when the ps3 reaches 10mill mark sold but so far, compared to the time recently i had to get in touch with microsoft to have a new power pack sent to me they said 7-10 days 2 weeks later after ringing them again im still waiting.

I was part of that 0.2%. And part of whatever rate the 360 fails at.
Twice. Took 2 months from the time I called customer service to get my hands back on my 360 controller. It only took 7 days for my PS3. I don't know about the Wii, it's still in the box.

PS3 should've been the most unreliable of all consoles considering the amount of brand new cutting-edge tech inside it and 360 should've been one of the most reliable consoles seems how it uses fairly common tech.

the problem is that microsoft is not an hardware company like sony or nintendo and if i remember well every piece of 360 is made in a different part of the world or something like that, so they don't have much control on the production quality, while sony and nintendo probably produce about 90% of the hardware of their consoles

-People don't care if their consoles break. Thet don't care if they hear about the 33% failure rate. If someone buys a 360 and it breaks on them, they should say, 'excellent, i was expecting it to do that' (although with the 360 you do). They should say, ' Hey, i don't care how many times my console breaks because i'll always get a replacement. And the 0.2% failure rate for ps3??? HA! Like i care??? I expect MY consoles to break on me continously"

I play My 360 around 7 hours a day say between 30 to 50 hours a week.((LOL I have no life.))That is allot of time the box is on, I own 21 360 games,most of the time i'm online in multiplayer. I have no games for my PS3 just 9 BLU RAY movies I am waiting for certain games to come out for it. What I am trying to say is that once the PS3 has allot more games only then will you see the failure rates go up it's not on enough for peoples PS3 to fail we will have to see in 2008. IMO

A LOT of our PS3's are folding while they aren't being played. My PS3 is on 24/7, it is a launch console and has never once overheated and works perfectly.

It's a good chance to help protein research. Plus, if you were you'd know that the calculations run by the Folding program max out the Cell processor, and mine's been running 24/7 since launch. (Exactly why you'll never see it on the 360)

I have played a lot of games continuously on my ps3 for 8 to 10 hours everyday with oblivion, ninja gaiden, darkness, virtua fighter, rainbowsix vegas, RFOM and motorstorm(just to name a few) without a problem not even a flicker. I always hear lots of stuff about ps2's breaking down on people. Me and 3 of my friends bought ps2's on launch. They all still work to this day. None of us had to send them in or anything. Nice artical. Makes me feel lucky to have mine work this long.

Well, Sony took care of mine after 1 simple phone call. My launch unit had bad DREs after 3 years, and after sending it back the next day, I had my fixed PS2 back with replacement head and drive mechanism within 5 days, free shipping. It's still working today.

Many other people had similar success stories in the previous years as well, it just takes some experience with talking to support people over the phone. Kids who didn't get a free fix should have had their parents make the phone call.

this no game ps3 crap is annoying, i usually buy 20-25 games each gen.
i rent the rest or just get it from friends who finished them. the point is i already own 4 ps3 games plus flow, calling all cars and stardust(which i don't know what was all the fuss about it being a good game) and tekken 5, and a couple of ps1 games like crash, jumping flash(ohhh the memories)and tekken2. and of course there will be this crazy 3 month line up coming soon so there's another 4-5 games..wow only in year one and i only bought it 3 weeks ago.

I am not an xbot and not a PS fan boy I am a gamer and yes some of the games you have mentioned I own on the 360 because I got the 360 1yr before the PS3. when MGS, KILLZONE,and more games I am waiting for come out, then I will have games for my PS3 but now there is not 1 game that I will buy for the PS3, and any game that is offered for both systems I will buy it for the 360 just because of the multiplayer, but things may change soon or 2008 when I get to play the KILLZONE multiplayer, my 360 will,will sit for a very long time as my PS3 does now. If you have a PS3 and you do not play games, then you are only watching movies? This is good and all and least you are in the bluray family...but come on...you never played resistance fall of man? You have never experienced a 40 player deathmatch in that game? You never played motorstorm? Did you play the heavenly sword demo? You know that the xbox has not game like heavenly sword, warhawk, Lair, Ratchet, or Uncharted...all these games are unique to the PS3 and are comming out in a few months.

After playing warhawk...you will not play any other game on the Xbox 360 except for bioshock and Halo 3....warhawk is that good.

My PS3 has been running for nearly 4 months straight now without a break. When I get a chance and some free time, I play Sigma, Resistance, Motorstorm, and watch Blu-Rays. When I'm not doing that, it's folding. I've been doing that for just little over 4 months, and it has yet to even hiccup. I've never been able to do that before, with ANY system, and that goes back to the NES. I remember once I went on vacation and in the rush out the door I left my SNES on (I was like 5 years old). I came back 3 or 4 days later and it was fried. Not to mention folding uses close to 100% CPU whenever it's on.

This is bullcrap because the AWESOME Xbox360 has the same exact failure rate, but yet it's never reported. I think the only difference is that you need to add an additional 33% on top of Sony's failure rate for them to be the same. Other than that they're exactly identical failure rates....AAAHAHAHHAAHA

No BS I like shooter games I have Gears of war for 360 played it for a week I don't like it, don't get me wrong it is a great game but not for me. My problem is that I like real life scenarios not shooting aliens. Games like Call Of Duty,Ghost recon,Rainbow six,Battlefield,Socom,also love sports games Hockey,Football,Baseball. RESISTANCE is another game shooting aliens, that is why I have not bought it yet. The games that I like, have come out on the 360 before they have come out on the PS3,so that is why I have no games for the PS3. Now GTA will always be a Playstation game to me, because I have always played GTA on the playstation, so I will get it For the PS3.When SOCOM,MGS,KILLZONE,comes for the PS3 I will get them. When CALL OF DUTY 4 comes out it will be for the 360 it is a xbox game to me always played call of duty on xbox and the 360. So no Bullsh@t I just like certain games and for certain systems. If Socom was to come out for both systems no matter what I would buy it for the PS3, again Because it will always be a PS game.

Everyone is comparing a console that's out almost 2 years, with a console thats out 9 months now.

Do I have to mention the PS2 got major laserdiode problems after 10 months to 1 year of life?

The 360 failures also came after mostly a year extensive playing on it. So I should wait and sssshhhhhh especially Sony themselves giving numbers is a bit scary. I've heard more from them before... SOmething like 6 million PS3's sold in March 2007

Folding@Home pushes the PS3 harder than any game. I've been running the Folding@Home client on my PS3 since it first came out. While I'm sleeping and at work, my PS3 is running with its CPU maxed out.

I have not had ONE issue with it.

You would think that if the PS3 had any issues like the 360's RROD, that Folding@Home would have brought that out by now...

Even after my PS3 has been running F@H for 18 hours straight, the air coming out of the console is only warm, not hot... People may bash on the PS3 for being as big as it is, but it must have excellent airflow to pull that off.

Face it, Sony knows how to make hardware... Microsoft is still learning... ;-)

I'm really happy they didn't rush the PS3 and did a good job in making it, thats why i can't wait to get one. I know i won't be disappointed with it and especially with all these good games coming out this year for it. I'm really mad that MS didn't do the same but its whatever i guess, my friend had to send his 360 back for repairs 3 times now. Sometimes I'm scared mine is going to break anytime now and thats why I don't play games on it like I used too.
