EA tech responds to "Madden's Raiders" about the inferior version of Madden '08 on the PS3

The following is a response to a query a member of N4G (Madden's Raiders) sent to EA yesterday. The response was quick and polite and surprisingly honest.

Hello Scott,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the issues you've found with Madden NFL 08 for the PlayStation 3 game console. While we fully understand your frustration with the limitations the technology has placed against the video frames per second of the game play on the PlayStation 3 game console, it was out intent to put out the best possible with Madden across 10 platforms. While it is very simple to draw a conclusion based on the end-user experience with the game technology, what most people do not realize is hours of research which goes into fully understanding the hardware demands for each console. In the case of the next-generation consoles, many publishers have been developing titles for the Xbox 360 for over 3 1/2 years while everyone who publishes now for the PlayStation 3 with the exception of Sony has been developing for the PlayStation 3 for only a little over one full year. The differences in the overall knowledge of the hardware is vastly different for both consoles and, as is the case with newer technology, it is very difficult to get it right the first time. As for frame-rate differences, 30 frames per second is the same for all PS 3 football games this year, not just Madden but also NCAA Football, and 2K Sports' offering as well. If you choose not to purchase the game, it is a choice fully understand and respect. Please know that I have passed your feedback and observations on to the game team and hopefully someone within their team will be able to address this matter further.

Sincerely,

Rob M.

shall set you free. I don't feel as mad and bad as I did before I sent this. It's as I hypothesized and some of you as well, that the 360 version is essentially the lead platform with more time to develop for and the PS3 version will come into its own. Now I can breathe again. I'll keep you all updated on future responses from maybe Peter Moore himself. lol =]

cheers

Just say the word and we will boycott their Sh!t.

I am not doing this for me, but for the entire PSNation and really gamers around the world. Like I said, my resentment toward EA has dropped a few notches since receiving this response and I have replied back to them for even more clarification and possibly an apology to the owners of all PS products for their seemingly, total lack of concern with the SNE brand as a whole; he even admits as much.

But, for the sheer honesty and prompt response to the query I think a reprieve might be in order until I get a response from them regarding official full disclosure, maybe on their website or a major publication. It's simply ludicrous for major news outlets like CNN and others to tout this game a true measure of the PS3's capabilities or any other of the SNE consoles.

Bottom line: They're leading people to think that something is wrong with the hardware (across the world!) and no one is saying anything about it. If EA does not address this issue in the public eye, then maybe yes, a boycott could be in order.

Ridiculous? You be the judge.

juandren6099d ago

I think its great that you took the bull by the horns (your avatar made me say that) More people should question devs when they give half-assed or no answers. Bubble for you!

ItsDubC6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

Honestly, I think you're blowing this out of proportion. You're an avid Madden fan and of course it sucks to get an inferior version on your preferred console. But like the support rep said, the Cell is new technology and EA will have a better understanding of it for Madden '09. I'm confident that '09 will run at 60fps on the PS3 and that it would have even if you had never sent your complaint. There is always a price to pay for early adoption.

Perhaps for '10 or '11 the PS3 version of Madden will be the far superior version but until then, everyone will just have to wait for knowledge progression with respect to parallel programming.

Awesome Maddens Raiders. Well done man. You make us all proud. I am so glad you have done this step of going B3YOND. EA better pay some good attention to us, real gamers.

How did you ever reach contributer status? Hell anyone on this site could have posted this. You gave EA as your source, wtf? Let me guess you copied and pasted an e-mail you sent to yourself. You Sony fanatics are ruining what this site is supposed to be. Between approving forom posts, fake news, and SPG propaganda I don't see how anyone knows wtf is going on in the gaming industry. What if all the Wii, and 360 fans starting pulling news out of their ass the way you Sony fans do. Here is a newsflash, Playstation 3 is officially the brand of whiners and crybabies.

Syko6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

You need to also respect your elders. Maddens Raiders has been contributing to this site for a long time and while I don't agree with him most of the time. He isn't an annoying fanboy. He is just a PS3 defender and always has been. This story is not fake and I beg you to give a little more credit to maddens Raiders before lumping him in with the likes of the idiotic Sony fanboys around here.

Good job Maddens Raiders appreciate the EXCLUSIVE for N4G. Like I said we don't always agree but you usually don't say anything over the top so you're alright in my book, even if you do like that 30fps monster PS3
=P.

Had to get one in on ya. Thanks again for the story..

Yosking6099d ago

Madden that was brave to stand up to EA man nice work. EA on the other hand really need to address a full disclosure this is almost like disrespect to ps3 and psnation.

ROCK ON PS3!

Shin_Akakage6099d ago

It's pretty unrealistic for me or anyone here to think buy all of what this guy is saying. Specifically this line...

"many publishers have been developing titles for the Xbox 360 for over 3 1/2 years while everyone who publishes now for the PlayStation 3 with the exception of Sony has been developing for the PlayStation 3 for only a little over one full year".

Sorry I'm not buying that. It would be foolish for anyone here to think that PS3 titles have only been developed for a little over 1 year. It takes much more time then that to develop the game from the ground up. NBA Live was a Launch title for PS3 and if memory serves me correctly Madden was originally suppose to show up at PS3 launch..but was scrapped before launch to make a better game(plus madden 07 was garbage on x360 too). And then keeping with the fact that PS3 was originally suppose to launch 3-4 months behind X360...Spring 06...its doubtful that they only had a year of development time. The fact that NBA 2k Launched with PS3 and was on par with X360 version is proof enough of that.

I do concede though that devs do not know PS3's hardware as well as X360's simply because the type of processor used in 360 is similiar to what they have been working with already, the 360 has better tools and a more developer friendly environment. PS3's cell is more difficult and more importantly more costly to develop for.

Madden is EA's KEY franchise and I'm sure they did everything they could to release the BEST version of the game they could on PS3. So there has to be some problem they ran into during the development cycle that forced this game to run at 30fps. Next year they'll fix it unless its a hardware problem(doubtful).

InMyOpinion6099d ago

What concerns me is that there were a lot of bad spelling in the letter.

How can I be sure you did'nt compose this letter yourself? There's no proper source, no proof. It is known that you were very upset from this issue, and also that you often respond in defense to people who don't show love for the PS3. Not calling you a fanboy, but you're definately on the Sony side of things. It just leaves me doubtful. Show me some proof that this mail is legit and I won't doubt you.

Also, it's quite hilarious that N4G now approves "news" that has no real source at all and in turn fail legitamite review posts like my own that got canned for no real reason a couple of hours ago. Not old, no duplicate. Real source, no editing faults.

Check it out:

eLiNeS6099d ago

It looks like you wrote this yourself, why I don't know but a word is misspelled is why I ask.

"it was out intent to put out the best possible with Madden across 10 platforms." shouldn't it read "it was ouR intent"?

Crazyglues6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

I feel your pain... I am very happy with the response and it seems like they handled it the best they could not having more time with the PS3 dev kit.

So I guess the next Madden will be just as Sweet on PS3. I wish more companies could just come out and keep it real, and say "hey where having problems with the PS3 version but we will get it right next time."

I can respect that and Buy the game now.

sloth4urluv6098d ago

I thought this was pretty much understood already.
Its not like EA had a grudge against playstation or microsoft is paying EA money to keep PS3 version at 30fps.

If you believe that you must be retarded.
PS3 has been out for less time than the 360, its harder to develop for end of story.
Its not that the PS3 cant do 60fps its just going to dake devs a little longer to figure out how to write more effcient code for it.

Nobody picks up a guitar for the first time and starts jamming out. Do you expect Devs to figure everything out instantly? This goes for all consoles not just the PS3.

You fanboys need to grow up, its not a damn war or anything.

elitesupreme6098d ago

it is a sign of fear ^^. The very first X360 Madden 06 ran at only 30fps! Yet, all of you fanboys think that the PS3 Madden is the worst thing ever for being 30fps only? Get over it. Nobody whined about that fact because:

1- nobody noticed or knew any better
2- there wasn't a "better" version to compare it to.

So, anybody who chooses to use the 60fps vs 30fps as ammo against the PS3, is BLISSFULLY IGNORANT!!!

All this over frame rate issues!

Thank God both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions came out on the same date or we could be sitting in the middle of WWIII right now.

Ju6099d ago

How can that be a WW ? The rest of the world can care less about Madden. That's an American thing... :)

BISHOP-BRASIL6099d ago

I have to agree with Ju... I myself never have seen an original American Football game for consoles in any store, only for PC, but even in few stores.

drtysouf216099d ago

Maddens! We should fly to their head office and speak to them face to face! Just playin!

Marceles6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

"Totally unacceptable that the freakin' Wii version gets an "editor's gold" from IGN and they just sh*t all over the version you guys squirted out for the PS3"

Lol, the most professionally written letter ever! :P But I'm glad that instead of saying, "the 360 is just way better technically than the PS3", they said they've spent more time on the 360's hardware and happen to know it very well while they are still learning to develop for the PS3. Nice letter Maddens..

edit: lol @ war picture

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies3h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

CrimsonWing6914h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker14h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6914h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt2h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos20h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto19h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8819h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies9h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
