Blu-Ray Players Outpacing Supply

Some consumer electronics retailers see the sales gap closing between set-top HD DVD players and Blu-ray Disc players as the two formats have come closer in price.

HD DVD players are still selling better than standalone Blu-ray players. "Some consumer electronics retailers" the keyword being "some". The two retailers in question are relatively small.

Just look on Amazon, there are usually 2 or 3 HD DVD players before the first standalone player.

Did standalone Blu-ray player sales improved when they dropped the price to $500 and copied HD DVD's successful 5 free movie promotion? Of course they did. But HD DVD players are still outselling Blu-ray.

Standalone Blu-ray players (like the BDP-S300) will be out of spec come November and will not be able to play all of the features in upcoming movies. It's a shame that Sony is ripping people off this way.

HA! you sony trolls are too funny sometimes. i'm neutral and want only 1 format to be succesful but i have a BIG feeling it won't happen this round. i predict this war to go the way of the dvd+r / dvd-r war; stalemate.

you guys don't even see the whole picture aside from whatever you feel is the successor in this HD battle due to your brand loyalties. your dominance of 60/40 is of a 5% (HD) total movie sales where majority of BR players is the ps3. even amongst all ps3 owners only a handful (13%) actually use it as a BR player only. go figure mommy bought lil johnny the next playstation.

with that said this war will rage on. ps3 is a great BR player, there's no denying it... but sony fanboys' obvious selective reading gets the better of them. HD DVD stand alone players are only used as players and they outsell BR stand alones which tells you the general non d*ckriding public has a bigger voice than you bloggers. winning a war is about outselling hardware AND software.
maybe when you guys get more worthy games you'll use your ps3 more than just a BR player you toot so much about. you never thought since when that happens, what will the BR movie sales be like?

this war is far from over ladies. the longer it goes, the more likely that the 'exclusive' studios will jump format neutral. your own samsung BR partner is even releasing a universal player including HD DVD playback. if you fail to see that as a sign of things to come, then continue trolling dominance and how HD DVD is dead

HD DVD has a larger market share in high-def movies than PS3 has in video games. For those that say HD DVD is dead, then you must really believe that PS3 is dead, given that it’s performing worse in its market.

The ps3 has two major competitors in the videogame business while hddvd only fight blueray and not the majority of major videogames developers are sided with one side or the other but are rather multiplat.

Although i agree with you on the fact that saying that hddvd is dead is a little premature. The only thing that will declare the complete dead will be Universal to go multi.

how can you be stupid enough to compare two different markets... Video Games vs. Movies... HD-DVD vs. Playstation 3. They are completly different markets. Sure the playstation 3 has a lower share in its market, thats because its fighting against 5 other consoles (6 if you include the pc)... There are only two formats in the format war... so of course HD-dvd will have higher shares. Now your just pathetic for compareing two markets. The priced of both media and players are dropping in price.

I will say this again and again, Just by simple observation the blu-ray discs tend to be cheaper than hd-dvd when comparing the same movie on both formats.

Plus I dont know why hd-dvd fanboys spin it off by saying the ps3 does not "really" represent sales of blu-ray players. Even to the extent that they say it is not a worthy player.

Through simple observation once again you actually see the ps3 in audio visual stores. This is the first time i;ve seen a gaming console in these types of stores.

Truthfully hd-dvd has only one advantage at this point the standalone players are aprox half t he price, but the gap is closing and t he media sales statistics just show that cheaper priced players do not always determine success of a product.

Oh and I forgot one other thing special features on a hd-dvd tend to be better, but it is simply not a selling point. But many fanboys make it seem like a selling point feature. It's like saying the smart media ports are a selling point on the ps3...

So they deny the number of movies sold is indication (strange - but OK)...
Then they deny the PS3 is factor - and try to point at "stand-alone" players as the indicator... So - that argument is falling away...so

The last argument:
HD-DVD add-on players is outselling Blu-Ray, proving that HD-DVD is the choice next gen format. The only product out there is the XB360 add-on, so with no competition, they will win that one for sure - until a Blu Ray add on for the XB360 is available - so they are safe until then. So watch the next spin... Add-on HD-DVD outsells the competition.

And on the movies... Universal published movies outsells Universal published BR movies (because there is none... yet)

the thing is the ps3 is providing the blu-ray market with tons of player's yes not everyone who has a ps3 has blu-ray films, BUT you can't say that it hasn't helped film sales. Blu-ray films sales are much higher than hddvd because of this and the more films sold, the more likey studio's will back blu-ray

People are focusing too much on what the importance of a stand alone or a gaming console to the DVD's market, or who sell more stand alones and whatever...

The problem is, stand alone or not, you don't buy a player to look at its face... You buy such a thing to see movies, shows, porn and... well you got it.

So what matters in the end and the way that the industry would count who is outselling who, is simple saying "This month was sold X movies in the Format A platform and Y movies in the Format B platform".

That would be enough or, at least, the focus in this war.
