Heavy Rain Sales - 1 Million After 5 Weeks

For a game, which at first, didn't look like it would succeed in terms of sales, today's news certainly comes as fantastic news to Sony and Quantic Dream. After being on sale for only 5 weeks, Heavy Rain has reached a milestone and has sold over 1 million copies.

The game, regarded to be more like an interactive film, has joined God of War 3 and Final Fantasy 13 in an exclusive club to of sold over a million copies throughout March.

LordMarius5141d ago

I still havent bought it and probably never will

RememberThe3575141d ago (Edited 5141d ago )

Alas, I had to rent it. It was awesome. I literally couldn't stop playing it, and ended up finishing it at 5 o'clock in the morning. One of, if not, the most intense experience I've had with a video game.

LordMarius5141d ago

is the game still enjoyable even if you know who the killer is?

slave2Dcontroller5141d ago

HR is a game that I'm proud to have in my library. It was so much better than what I expected it to be. I understand that this game isnt for everyone but my God its a masterpiece of a game for anyone looking for a new experience.

Even after beating the game I find still find myself playing the game. I would suggest renting it if you have doubts but I'm sure you will want this game in your PS3 library after trying it out.

Nicholas Cage5141d ago

damn every little exclusive that comes out hits like 1 to 2 to 3 million. ive noticed sone ps3 games are generally varied...thats a hella lot! if we didnt have little big planet, heavy rain, or uncharted 2, KILLZONE 2 WOULD BE AT 10 MILLION. man im glad this game gets the respect it deserves.

Icyhot5141d ago

To be frank, I didn't expect this game to even hit 500K, but it's doing surprisingly well for a game that is so out of the usual 'shooter' genre. I guess people were kind of waiting for the reviews and then decided to jump in and after the 9s score, even I was pulled in.. Great game and great style.

Cheeseknight285141d ago

It's worth renting at least for one or two playthroughs. I wish the story was a bit better though.

Obama5141d ago

one of the 360 fanboys (probably Bungie) spoiled the ending for you?

TheHater5141d ago

speaking of him/her/it. What the new account for that user?

Shang-Long5141d ago

I don't think anyone thought it would sale this well so fast. I mean five weeks for a game some people said wasn't a game, is pretty d@mn good!

tripewire5141d ago

@ Marius

Id definately give it a play through. Even if you just rent it.the first hour might sh!t you, but there are some really gripping sequences in the game that every gamer should experience. It clocks in at about 8 hours so it isnt exceptionally long and wont eat up your life.

Cyrax_875141d ago

Quantic dream will be very happy :)

aaron58295141d ago

that i didnt see any spoilers... because i did what i always do ... avoid the news of the games that i was excited about...

I think people should start doing that to avoid any spoilers...

I did it with Uncharted, MGS, Heavy Rain, Heavenly Sword... etc

nix5141d ago

wow... congrates!

i bought the game to support the devs. plus, the game was great anyways!!! hope to see more games like this.

thief5141d ago

Almost everytime I check my local HMVs, Heavy Rain is sold out. Come on Sony, get some copies into the stores, before the hype dies down.

Lifendz5141d ago

Yes Heavy Rain is enjoyable even if you know who the killer is. Just as Lost would be enjoyable if you just started watching the old episodes now even though you know certain cast members are going to live.

sikbeta5141d ago

Amazing and I only going to say this:

In Your Face, stupid FPS-Generation, that's for ya and the douches that only make lame FPS games for teenagers, QD got the guts to make a non-FPS game and succeed and DC redeemed himself with this Game

VARIETY > stuck FPS genre

Congrats to QD...

2Spock5141d ago

Maybe someday PS3 users will start buying games. Its funny but half the people i have heard bought this game is actually only to support the dev's. What would have happened if that wasn't the case.

ian725141d ago (Edited 5141d ago )

@ 2 Spock
"Maybe someday PS3 users will start buying games". I have over 70 blu-ray disc games and so has many more, so we do buy games. I probably have more games than most 360 gamers.
O.T. Heavy Rain deserves the success, great game, different but still great.

Raf1k15141d ago

That's with it being selling out due to much higher than expected demand so it's all the more impressive since it would have sold more if they'd shipped enough copies.

Christopher5141d ago

Which is really sad because inFamous is a great game and more appealing to the general gaming community.

2Spock5141d ago

How can you say we when you are only talking about yourself. Man the sh1t people say to try to have a leg up....silly....really....silly . And i am sorry if you have 70 ps3 games or even 70 games period cause you have more money than sense.

insomnium5141d ago

I just love your bubbles......nomnomnom

Ravage275141d ago

assuming that you are using VG chart as reference, here's some data from the site.
360 SW this week: 1.756 million
PS3 SW this week: 3.356 million

Yes it's clear that PS3 gamers don't buy games /s

Let's see how well Alan Wake sells in May

Chubear5141d ago (Edited 5141d ago )

I had initially thought this game would sell btw 1.5-2mill life time but it's looking like it'll be double that for life time sales. Fantastic indeed. As we all have seen, what can we expect with sequels for new PS3 exclusive IPs? Bigger leaps in quality.

Next big budget game from QD in line with this type of gameplay is going to be out of this world as sequels to PS3 exclusives have always shown significant improvements - AWESOME.

I have to say though, if not for the gaming media giving this game 9s, gamers would not have gone out as much to get the game. It's a shame they hold so much power over the gaming community cause so easily they could have given it 6s and people would have stayed away. I can't believe I'm saying this but, on this one time, I'm grateful that the gaming media didn't rob us of future installments of this type of great gaming experiences and gave credit where it was due. They did good by this game and by the gamers.

nycredude5141d ago

Marius

And yet you feel compelled to come on here and announce that to us like we would care? GTFO. Either contribute to the thread or just leave.

On Topic: The game deserves as much sales as possible. I, for one welcome these types of games and would love for a more graphic, visceral game like this in the vein of something like Seven.

jaysquared5141d ago

These sales figures are dissapointing! For a heavy hitter like this.. Yes Sony and its fanboys proclaimed that Heavy rain is a huge game! A million not a lot but I guess I have to quit comparing PS3 exclusives to 360 exclusives sales! I'm pretty sure a million sold hasn't covered the cost to develop and market this game.. Specially this gen when developing games cost a lot more compared to last gen..

DaTruth5141d ago (Edited 5141d ago )

You're right, you shouldn't! PS3 has five other exclusives out in March alongside FF13(which sold a ton more on PS3) and many more multiplats! Sony doesn't release one game for a year and then brag about how much it's game deprived public, ran for something to actually play!

There are more quality exclusives a year on PS3 than there are quality multiplats! I'm not surprised when 360 owners finally get an exclusive after an entire year without them, that they run out in droves hoping it is not one of their usual shovelware!

It is not something to brag about!

cayal5140d ago

Excellent game. I was in the boat of those who thought it wouldn't sell (Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit issue) but really glad to see it has done well.

CellularDivision5140d ago

A PS3 Fanboy ruined the ending for Alan Wake for me.

N4BmpS5140d ago

The flood gates have been opened, now Sony needs to keep em' Coming people are starting to pay attention now. With the right developers on deck and an in-tune timing Sony can really turn some heads who weren't looking before. I'm proud of you gamers, I'm proud.

Il probably rent this, theres just too many games atm.

LeonSKennedy4Life5141d ago

I've always known you to have taste.

*smack*

BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

2Spock5141d ago

Just rent it. I actually wish i had never bought it, there is no replay value at all once you beat it and replay a few chapters to do something different. Very good experience 1st play through.

unrealgamer585141d ago

Innovation rewarded with sales. :)

2Spock5141d ago

You think a million is being rewarded with sales?

Raf1k15141d ago

It is when the game is probably the most niche title released this gen. QD and Sony didn't expect it to sell as well as it did which is why they didn't ship enough copies leading it to be sold out in nearly all stores. Pre-owned copies were being sold at only £3 less than full price.

I'd say that's pretty good.

Greek995141d ago

And It will continue to sell. Lets not forget Sony first party games tend to have long legs.

1 million in 1 month and a week? Sounds like good numbers imo.

Nike5141d ago (Edited 5141d ago )

Unfortunately, 1 million isn't enough. For a game like Tomb Raider Underworld, 1 mil wasn't enough, and that's the same case of Heavenly Sword according to the devs. Now we have a game that's been hyped on the same level as Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2, but it sells about 1 mil. The resources that went into making this game are no small thing. Personally, I hope it sells more, but it's just really, really telling when a game like this sells this much in 5 weeks and another emotionally involving game like Mass Effect 2 reaches that number in a week.

The truth is, Heavy Rain is really just a below average adventure game. The legends of yesteryears beat the tar out of it.

Rock Bottom5141d ago

For a short interactive movie with little to no replay value, 1 million is too much. I loved Fahrenheit but couldn't get my self to buy HR even though I know it's awesome... just no enough value. Might do so when it's much cheaper.

Mr Lahey5141d ago

So, 1 million in five weeks isn't enough? Yeah right.. 1 million in total sales, sure.. But five weeks! HR sales is doing just fine!

And if you think Heavy Rain is a below average adventure game you've never played it, simple as that.. It's like calling the movie Se7en an adventure movie..

nycredude5141d ago

For a short interactive movie with little to no replay value, 1 million is too much. I loved Fahrenheit but couldn't get my self to buy HR even though I know it's awesome... just no enough value. Might do so when it's much cheaper.

Comments like this is what is wrong with the industry. You haven't played it yet you have all these opinions on how it's short or it doesn't have replay value. I don't get it. If you loved Fahrenheit why in the world wouldn't you buy this! It's better in every way than that game. I personally played it twice and both times the game played out differently with VERY different endings. This game is very good and is worth your money.

you got to the movies one night to watch a 2 hour movie with your significant other, you will end up spending almost the same and you can't watch the movie more than 1 times. This game you get to keep or trade back and it's anywhere from 6-10 hours. The second time you play it things are different if you choose and there are plenty of endings. I don't see your logic here.

Rock Bottom5141d ago

First of all, I said I might buy it when it's cheaper but apparently you don't know what that means because you made it look like I'm someone who have no interest in buying HR.

I am what's wrong with the industry?

I just bought GoW3, Final Fantasy XIII, Tekken 6, Pro Evo 2010 and Killzone 2 for PS3 and Mass Effect 2 for PC in less than two months. Pretty sure I could buy another PS3 with the money I spent on those games. I can't afford to buy every game in existence, now can I.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1259d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1259d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1258d ago (Edited 1258d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1416d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121416d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1416d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121416d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121416d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
