Killzone 2 at E3 – Cost $20 Million To Date

Killzone 2 is going to get the full E3 treatment, with its own party in a swanky sushi bar in Santa Monica and everything. It's on at the same time as the Microsoft conference and E3 party, no less! Take that Microsoft!

Apparently Killzone 2, developed by Amsterdam-based Guerilla Games, is the most expensive entertainment project in Dutch history, with a whopping great budget in excess of $20 million (£10 million).

I didn't think it was that bad of a game. If your talking about the looks, its actually a really good looking game, once you get past the first two levels(the first two levels are really boring looking). As for the gameplay I thought it wasn't too bad, not amazing, but it was ok.

If you look back at it now,it did a few things first. A few games today copied it to an extent, Gears of War copied the look of the sprinting, both Gears of War and the Riddick game copied the animated melee kills.

Each Media (site, journalist, etc) dont usually work solo. This means that they can be in two places. So for example, Ziff davis (1up show) will send a couple people to get the scoop on KZ2 and others will attend Microsofts event.

Personally, i hope the release media either good or bad on Killzone. I hope they are not bound by contract to be silent. That would suck.

I vividly recall the 360 being promoted at a number of big box stores, at a significantly lower price than usual during the launch of the PS3, because I remember thinking how many non-tech-savvy parents were going to automatically opt for the 360 for their kids' Xmas gift specifically because the price drop was so enticing.

I just think it's rather immature for everyone in the world that has a ps3 to be screaming about how this game is going to do so on and so forth...I mean, seriously. MS paid 50mil just for extra content, so Killzone 2 cost 20mil so far big deal. If MS paid 50mil for content who knows how far they will go, E3 should be good.

The difference is Sony spend $20M to assemble a huge team of talent and fund an ambitous project that might end up being something special. M$ has spent $50M pretty much just to give a thumb to the eye of Sony and win a stage in the pissing contest. That, and just because they can. They already have the same game. The price they have paid for bonus content which only a percentage of the original buyers of GTA4 will get/buy means they will never make money on this game. They will have to sell so many copies just to break even.

At $60 per game, you have to sell around 850,000 units to hit $50m. GTA III sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million units on the PS2 alone.

So is $50m worth bonus content? You betcha. Because if GTA faithful decide they'll buy the 360 version instead of the PS3 version to get that content, and it influences only 10% of the buyers (850k/10m)... then they've made their money back. And won market share. And stuck a thumb in Sony's eye.

You do realize that Microsoft makes nowhere NEAR $60 for each copy of the game sold, right? They make the largest chunk of profit, yes, but that money goes to the developer, distributor, the store who's shelf it's sitting on, the guy who shipped it there, advertising, etc.

They would have gotten the game anyways. They would have gotten the DLC anyways. They paid $50 million to make sure no one ELSE could have it. If you think that the difference in number of users buying the 360 version and DLC will equate to a $50 million jump from what their present install base would do...I'd have to disagree there.

Yes, I know MSFT doesn't get all the profit for each game sold. I was making a point that they'll get their money back, and could likely get market share, by doing this. And besides, sometimes you make an investment to win market share. GTA was one of the main reasons that MSFT cites for losing last gen. Remember the first Xbox? The only reason it sold anything was Halo. It was the only game for quite a while that was worth the price of the big black box.

Now we see PS3 in third place, lagging behind Xbox 360 and Wii in sales each month. So this is the killer app. This is the "Halo" for the PS3, intended to push boxes.

Sony obviously feels strongly enough about this game to pull off an event like this. I think it's great. I love my 360, but I'll be getting a PS3 once the price drops and the good games come out. I hope this is one of them.

If it isn't... if KZ2 flops like the original did, then Sony is going to be left with egg on its face and an even bigger mess on its hands.

Why is sony hyping this game so much? I mean, if the game is great it can carry itself. It sounds to me as if Sony is counting on this game to drive E3 this year. Is it because of Halo 3? I sure Hope that microsoft does not make their conference 90% about halo as Sony seems to be doing with Kill Zone 2. I want E3 to be like last year... with a bunch of new games anouncements and surprises. Release a nice trailer and show us some real gameplay and then show us a bunch of new games and features... So, if Kill Zone does not look as good as last year's CGI and it endup being a disapointment there are other games to lean on. Hype is a bad thing? I think doing a special event for Killzone 2 just adds more hyped to the game. As a developer you can't ask for a better chance. If this game is good it will be a killer app because of the hype.

guerilla probally spent less than 7 million to make killzone 1.and they started off with about 40 devs.

killzone 2 is reportedly over 20 million.and they now have over 120 devs.so that's 80+ devs that are now helping with the game.that could be heavy programmers and physics majors.movie animators and artists.could be something like renting the russian philarmonic for music.and getting people for translating the game for different regions.and some great actors.

Crysis doesn’t even live up to the quality of the CG trailer and it will take a beast of a pc to run. An 8800gtx has 3 times the video memory of a ps3 and most PCs have 8 times the system memory of a ps 3. I have no doubt it will look good but the hype is just out of control for this game. Guerilla has yet to make a solid game and let’s not forget that sony hyped killzone in the same way they are hyping up killzone 2. Sony needs to get FPS fans away from the xbox brand so of course they are going to hype the hell out of this game.

I hope the game rocks and if it does I will surely buy it but I am trying to be realistic here. Even if killzone is a better game it will have a hard time selling more than halo 3. The xbox 360 is an fps machine, 8 out of every 10 games that come out are shooters. PS3 caters to a much more broad game selection and I know quite a few PS 3 owners that don’t like fps games and that’s why they will not own an xbox. The halo fanbase is huge and extremely rabid. The current install base of the 360 is much larger in america and japanese are not big fans of fps games.

A ton of shooters from PROVEN developers are all coming out around the same time, crysis, halo 3, UT 3 and haze. Killzone regardless of how good it ends up being is fighting an uphill battle simply do to brand recognition. Killzone didn’t do very well it’s not opinion its fact, look at the sales figures. Halo is currently the console fps king and has been for years. Regardless of If you like halo or not it is the sales leader by a HUGE margin. I am not saying halo 3 will be better than killzone 2 but it will sell better on name alone. Halo 2 sold more copies in pre order than killzone sold all together.

So there is no point in bashing/praising it. NO ONE here has seen actual footage. As for your comment about the Halo killer. I believe there really won't be 1 Halo killer game coming out. I think it would be multiple games emerging that will give gamers more varieties, thus taking the "WoW factor" off of Halo. Think about it, Crysis, Haze, UT3, maybe even Killzone 2. Most/All of these titles will have amazing graphics, multiplay, co-op, everything Halo offers. Gameplay (most important) still has yet to be known however, so I'll leave that out ;P. And since 2 of these games (UT3 & Haze) won't be exclusives. There will always be a chance of those 2 titles having a larger fanbase. So I don't see Halo really "losing" it's Crown, more like "sharing" it. My humble opinion ofcourse. Feel free to disagree. :)

I remember a day when Bill Gates said that when The PS3 comes out, it will walk right into Halo 3. A few delays and a Beta later, and here we are, waiting on these guys to give us a look at their efforts. Money isn't what I'm concerned about these games making, but what I can see is that which ever game has had more heart put into it will get more attention, and will have longevity. This creates sales, and these new game ideas will stir up the industry. if Halo is predominantly what it always has been, some may write it off as not pushing the Halo Universe to its limits, especially with it being the last game in the cycle. if Killzone is a standard fps with better physics and better explosions, it will be written off as just a tip-toe forward in gaming evolution. I want Halo 3 to be good. No, scratch that. i want Halo 3 to be incredible, for the sake of the gamers who will spend hundreds of hours playing it. If you allow Bungie to adjust little things here and there and play follow the leader, you will only see incremental improvements over time. Killzone, on the other hand, is a game that knows it has something to prove, because although it was a good looking fps on ps2 (check out videos on youtube) it could have been better refined. Killzone 2 is mysterious, dark, and morose. With Halo 3 the cat's almost all the way out of the bag, and it is a little lighter, and isn't shy to have a few purple characters now and again. I want to be able to do things in these games that I have never been able to do in an interactive experience. Before Halo3 beta came out, all xbots were talking about how good Halo3 will look and it'll kill anything out. I agree with what andapaul88 said, i would also prefer graphics to sound. To me 5.1 sound is sufficient to enjoy the ambiance, 7.1 is overkill. Even if ps3 can come up with 7.1 sound the graphics are bland, colorless and blurry compared to 360 so the overall effect will be marred by it.
