Heavy Rain Banned In The United Arab Emirates

Sony has confirmed this morning that Heavy Rain, one of the biggest exclusives of the year for the PlayStation 3, has been banned in the United Arab Emirates.

DavidMacDougall5170d ago

I'm gonna guess its because of the boobies.

Vitalogy5170d ago

I'm gonna guess its because of everything in general, nudity its a possible excuse but I think its the script.

BeaArthur5170d ago

I'm surprised they are allowed to play video games at all.

-Alpha5170d ago

Unless the internet is banned there too...

Too bad. I'm Glad that the only thing that stops me from buying a game is lack of money.

5170d ago
Christopher5170d ago

Isn't there an option in the game to 'hide' nude scenes? Couldn't this be enabled by force and unchangeable in certain countries?

Syronicus5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

half a million PS3's in that region of the world. It could have sold a few copies to help spur perhaps more games like this.

BeaArthur5170d ago

Alpha-Male22...price of importing an illegal game is probably death. I have no idea if that would be the actual penalty but it seems like you can get executed for just about anything over there. I have yet to play a game worth dying for.

SµCk For Them, I'll Totally Play it, What's wrong wit the Game, Some bøøbs, Please BøøBs Are BEAUTIFUL lol

Seriously, WTH is wrong with the Game?

-Alpha5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

You've never played Demon's Souls then. j/k :P

I wonder how movies, tv, and art is depicted there. It's funny that Heavy Rain depicts nudity and sexuality in a very mature way as opposed to most games that depict sex for cheap thrills.

And it's not just UA Emirates, it's here in North America too where people make a big deal out of Heavy Rain without understanding the game.

People assume: Game + Nudity = Corrupted Youth.

@ BeaArthur below

Yup. Well, one day, games will be taken seriously as an entertainment medium. Maybe once fanboys aren't so divided and treat the industry like a one-console industry and maybe once fanboys can learn to appreciate the competition instead of treating is as a threat to their obliged console. We expect people to appreciate gaming when a significant amount of our community itself is so divided and unappreciative of games the competition consoles.

BeaArthur5170d ago

Alpha-Male22...it's not just the nudity, games are always an easy scapegoat. Whenever some parents have trouble controlling their kids they look for someone to blame it on, because you know it can't be bad parenting or that they just have a rotten kid. It couldn't possibly be either one of those options so of course it's those evil video games. The hilarious part is that even some of the best games graphically don't look all that real. But I digress, most things in Arab countries seem to be banned. That's why they are excited about getting Vanilla Ice cassettes.

Hellsvacancy5170d ago

Thats a shame, i was gonna import it from The United Arab Emirates aswell lol, oh well

bacon135170d ago

Banning of video games is the least of the worries over there. How about they ban killing women and children for no reason and funding international terrorism. Get with the times extremists, your living in the dark ages.

SoX FireBlade5170d ago

It's banned here too in Saudi Arabia because of nudity but some stores sell it. Same problem with GTA

I got from a friend and I just played it. It's really good

captain-obvious5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

i swear to this game is already on shelves here in the UAE
from a week a go
who the f*ck is it banned ???

i can go tomorrow and take a pic if you want

and to all those PPL that talk sh!t about UAE
they dont know sh!t about it
we are the safest Arabic country in the world thank god
and we are probably the only Arabic country that fight software pirates
and yes we do have our full freedom

most of the comments here are really off topic.so for those "defenders of justice" I suggest you read this list before spreading hate and ignorant comments.it's for your own good.now stop spreading nonsense and lets talk about something else.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Edit:@BeaArthur it's just a list of countries which banned games for some reasons so I'm not sure what's the problem here.as for my crusade against ignorance, read my second comment ;)

BeaArthur5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

Hakimy...I appreciate your crusade against ignorance, but your source is Wikipeida.

**AT ABOVE EDIT**

I'm just saying that the site you used to support your argument isn't really know for credibility. You're argument is sound I was just making a small joke.

captain-obvious5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

oh my god this topic is one hell of a miss right now
you know what F this
im in here to talk about games
im out of this topic

but i wana ask you guys one thing

its okay to ban games in the Australia
but its not okay to ban games on other countries ?

like in Arabic countries

@1.22
look at 8.1

Lifendz5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

now that's nuts. May sound cheesy but man am I glad I live in a country that allows me to purchase whatever movie/game I want. This is beyond editing parts out (which would suck in it of itself) but to flat out ban a game?

As Bill Maher would say "It's time for a new rule. New rule: if your country is banning games then games are the least of your worries."

@ Captain: I don't think it's okay to ban games anywhere. Not unless there are major extenuating circumstances (e.g. a game that is actually a tool for recruiting terrorists or something along those lines). Aussie gamers not only pay almost triple what we pay for games but sometimes games are flat out banned over there as well. I think gamers should have a unified voice on things like this and protest. "An injustice against one of us is an injustice against all of us."

Commander TK5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

at the PS3 fanboys above. The world is full of discrimination.

Jake11115170d ago

Why ban a product that is similar to a movie which provides a rating that restricts youth to view it?

Simple.... Control.

This shouldnt be alowed. This is only the beginning of more censorship. The people must stop this before it gets worse!

As aforementioned in previous comments, I have a friend in the UAE who HAS Heavy Rain and has already beat it.

They got the game over 2 weeks early and had them behind shelf (go to Geekay at Mall of the Emirates [AKA Moe] and ask the clerk for it, he'll get it from the back)

HSx95170d ago

It's not the boobs completely, It's against their religion to watch nudity over there.

UAE is probably one of the safest countries in the world and they do tend to take extreme measures in all areas for the wellbeings of its citizens.

Ocelot5255170d ago

don't make me laugh, this is just another law based on the sharia(islamitic law).

TheBest5170d ago

So .. limiting people's freedom is a benefit to their well-being?

Just rate it the maximum rating if need be and let the adults decide for themselves!

Jake11115170d ago

Stop supporting the UAE's decision to censor and ban video games because you have belief in Islam. Dont equate one to the other. This is plain dangerous to everyone including Muslims.

The correct answer is to remove your ties to these types of countries because they are Islamic countries and voice your opinions against any censorship, denigration of woman and child marriages.

Do NOT support these countries!

irepbtown5170d ago

Islam isnt the only religion which doesn't allow nudity,
Christianity, Catholics, jews etc

Seriously, are you all boys and girls on N4G non believers?
If you are then this shouldn't be a problem because as i said before, most religions do not allow nudity.

And why get all racist? where are the moderators? F***ING wake up MODS.

I dont understand this,
Jesus is GOD or GODS son?
which one? some say son, some say he is god? Christianity is confusing, not Islam

Want me to continue?

Middle east called. They said they want their oil back. Good luck taking donkeys to work! Please stfu and think before you start spitting out bs. Talking about reduced rights; how many right have the so called "modern world" lost in the last decade? Big brother says hello. And I live in North America. To our human brethren in the Middle east, not all of us think like baboons.

Isn't it great when any government passes laws/policies that protect us from ourselves?

Bebedora5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

To be fair, your argument doesn't hold much. There are "a bunch" of laws made to protect us from ourselves in many ways and forms. They are indeed needed. Humans can get nasty way more if there were none.

Foxgod5170d ago

Yeah, imagine if they would play Heavy rain.....

That would obviously unleash raping and murdering hordes into the streets.

Those poor Arabs must be protected against this vileness.

/S

Darkstorn5170d ago

You're trying to make connections that just aren't there.
The UAE may be a quite conservative country (by conservative I mean upholding the status quo-in this case sharia law), but Saudi Arabia and Yemen/Oman still tend to have harsher penalties on free speech.

Beast_Master5170d ago

No I think he is making the point that I made. He is questioning the idea that many people should question, which is why should my or any government tell me what is good for me or anyone else? What goes on in the minds of people that make that decision? Do they think if you see boobs in a video game that you will become a perve an rape and kill women or what?

I realize that people are sensitive about talking about Arabs, but I don't care what country we are talking about, censorship is Bullship! If they are living their lives by the shia or whatever your excuse is well fine then people that practice that lifestyle should choose automatically not to buy the game right, so what is the use in banning? Temptation?

As expected. I have nothing against this. Islam doesn't allow such nudity but Islam does allow blood, gore and war for children below 15.

How ironic. No offense to other people who have other faiths.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1251d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1251d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1251d ago (Edited 1251d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1408d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121408d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1408d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121408d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121408d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
