Two and a Half Hour Killzone 2 Preview at E3

Kotaku's Brian Crecente recently received an official invitation for a Killzone 2 Preview at E3. The duration of this preview? Two and a half hours. Crecente assumes it has to be a hands-on demo.

Oh, I guess u haven't played or even seen the reception of the public and the media towards the Halo 3 public beta. Bungie has everything to be worried about this gen. Everybody knows that the PS3 is much superior to the Xbox 360 technologically.

Also, the media are the ones who started the whole "KillZone vs. HALO 2” bs. So to inform you, it wasn’t me k, much to your disappointment.

Of course! Halo 3 is gonna make a lot of $$$. But, is it enough to keep the console upright? Selling the 360 with the name of Halo 3 attached to it is not a good thing. Microsoft really needs to thank the third-party for their support. But, for how long will that last? Sony have already said they will see to it that the third-party publishers jump to PS3 exclusivity bandwagon once more units are out in gamers hands. So, if I was an Xbot, I’d be worried.

The reception for the Halo 3 Beta was positive, with over 800 million hours clocked on the Beta, glitches were found, problems were solved, and the fans are begging for more Halo 3.

Also, Halo 3 is not limited by technology , infact the only thing that limits developers is the developers themselves, they decide to add options or CGI scenes that in the end cause the limitations in the first place.

With Halo 3, Bungie planned ahead, they didn't set the bar to high, and now they are working on an amazing game that won't be limited by technology

On the note of Halo, I'm really curious to see what direction Killzone's gameplay focus will go in. It's obvious that the big direction of Halo 3 is multiplayer, seeing as Halo 2 is one of the most popular online games for Xbox/360. Perhaps Killzone 2 will focus on Singleplayer? Or maybe they'll try and compete with Halo in multiplayer competitive play. It should be interesting to see.

1. They know they have pure gold on their hands and are just waiting to WoW the world.

But foreal, the only other reason they would be keeping hush hush is that they haven't really done anything AMAZING, like they promised they would. Therefore they're scared of the reaction they're going to get. Either Killzone 2 delivers, or PS3 is done before E3 is even over.

Sony's line-up looks straight up g@y, other than Killzone or MGS4.

P.S.- If Killzone 2 really is an awesome game. Does this mean that every AAA title for the PS3 has to be fronted at least $10 mil, and given 2 years of exclusive developement? If you think about it that way, I doubt many dev's will dev for PS3.

Sony needs to deliver, I do beleave the E3 trailer was real and the game will really look like that. If you look at the "eight days" developer presentation that was real gameplay, the developer was able move around the gas station in 3D and blow it up from different angles. Also he was able to change from day light to nigt time in realtime.

Halo wasn't the best FPS when it came out.
The PC had all the best FPS and still does.

The draw with halo was it was the first FPS on a console that actually played quite well with it's story and controls. (Goldeneye still holds a bigger place in my heart) As far as Halo 2 goes (Halo 2 is second right behind Goldeneye) the multi player kicked some serious @ss. Another reason the Halo franchise is so big is because when the Xbox launched thats really all there was with the exception of other 3rd party multi plat's, so people really latched onto it.

On a side note, who else is looking forward to the next installment of Black?

I look at it like this.

Cod2 had excellent smoke fx, and character models were sweet as well, shaders looked sweet as well.

I've just seen Cod4, Quite a few vids and its looking impressive, lovely lighting fx.

Now you've got a Game called Killzone 2, A massive budget, all the help they need coding for the ps3, and when u think of above titles grapically, you've got to be thinking, this is going to be very impressive.

Also think about this, Motorstorm uses 20% of the spu's, as does resistance fall of man.20% -25%.

I'm wondering how much this uses, 50%.

This article was to discuss Killzone2, but yet xbots are bring up Halo3. If the E3 trailer was real gameplay, Halo3 will be overshadow because all the media would be all they talk about. I'm sorry but Halo3 is not going to live up to the hype people think. The graphics are inferior to 3rd party games, come on. Bungie has been in development for 3 years with Halo3 and can't surpass graphics on COD4 which took 1/3 of the time. Killzone 2 won't sell more than Halo 3, just because of the hype and install base around Halo 3, but there's no doubt it can be a better game. The E3 05 trailer crushes anything Halo fans could imagine for Halo 3, and Guerilla WILL get extremely close to that.

Killzone 2 can't crush Halo 3 alone and XBOX 360 alone, but combined with the exclusives of: Uncharted, Socom, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgement, Singstar, MGS4, FFX13, FFX13 Versus, Microsoft will be having a lonely holiday season.

Regardless of how good Killzone ends up being, it couldn't outsell Halo 3 due to the number of 360s versus PS3s (at least in the near future, and provided H3 isn't a complete flop). Anyone who's expecting KZ to surpass the hype, or to outsell Halo 3, has to realize that both goals are relatively unachievable.

Just as Halo 3 will increase the existing number of 360s sold, thus selling even more than KZ could hope to catch, the "hype" for this game is an intangible ideal that will always expand to be bigger than reality.

It's reached such monolithic proportions that no matter how hard one side will say "KZ is great!" there will be at least the same vehemence coming from the other side saying "KZ lIes! SonySUX".

I think the best we can hope for is a game that blows us away enough to make us not give a kcuf what the detractors say. That's a bit more reasonable than expecting The Trailer(TM).

I played both of the betas(warhawk is still on), and Warhawk is simply better. Better. Better. Yeah, bettter. Halo 3 isn't close to as fun as the fast paced action game Warhawk. It's just tooo much fun. In deathmatch, there's guys trying to run you over in the jeeps, there's tanks trying to blow everyone up, there's dog fights in the air, and then there's 15 guys on the floor shooting the sh*t out of eachother, all at the same time. well sony better be ready to "blow some socks off" and probably heads too. If they draw hype into the game and it fails to deliver it will suck big time. Killzone has the potential to be a solid game. A really really solid game. Sony should either pull it off with a bang or jst cancel the game all together. Not a big fan of 1st person shooters but i have to admit this whole killzone hype has gotten me all excited. Bring on E3 and lets get this over with. Halo is a good game but there are better games. Frankly i have enjoyed my warhawk beta a lot more than i have enjoyed any halo. Maybe its because there arent dat many games to play on ps3 so i stuck to the good one or i might not be all that credible since am not the biggest fan of shooters. But i am honestly having a great time playin warhawk definetly the most fun i have had for online gaming. I have convinced 2 of my friends to buy ps3's of this game alone so the game is dat gud.

for some reason I think they generated the invitation with the Killzone pics and markings to generate hype. I seriously think the two and a half hours is in reference to the entire Sony Press Event, not the Killzone 2 preview. I mean what on earth could they be showing off for 2.5 hours of just one game. I mean I expect it to be great, maybe even jaw droppng, but 2.5 hours? Maybe 20 minutes or even 45 minutes but not 2.5 HOURS. Most of us can tell if we're gonna like it or if it's impressive enough within 10 minutes.

I do believe everyone is jumping to conclusions.

This is how it happens people get all hyped up over something they are speculating, then when it doesn't pan out as everyone thought then it's "awww....Sony screwed the pooch..." or "Sony is dead in the water!"

The arguments centered around this game are some of the lowest in the industry...

Most people forget that Sony did very little to promote this game...They showed a trailer (that is it) over 2 years ago, and Jack screwed his words up...leading to the entire internet nearly imploding once insiders discovered who proved it to be a target render...Sony tried to clean it up by claiming that jack "meant resistance as in game footage"...then Killzone for the ps3 went away entirely...

Everyone else is who is hyping it...but to think that the fate of Sony's gaming department is riding on this 1 title might be ignorant...I agree that there will be huge waves of angry people if it doesn't live up, and sucks like the first one...but it will hardly make the ps3 go away...Sony is the ONLY company that has delivered more quality first party game every generation, time and time again...That is exactly what accelerated the PS1 into the top spot, despite being arguably the weakest of that generation...Same with the ps2, albeit with a lot of 3rd party games also...and this fall's lineup shows the strongest and largest 1st party group of games by far for the ps3...The 360 definitely has games coming too, but the 1st party support is centered around 2 games mostly...Sony has done a much better job of making some upcoming games that target nearly every genre, and if they end up each being strong...the sales will skyrocket...not everyone just wants to play shooters...

But I do agree that Sony needs Killzone (ps3) to wow people on how they claimed the ps3 is the strongest console by far...nothing else has shown that yet really...and the Warhawk beta I have been playing, while a ton of fun, doesn't push graphics to a whole new level...or show much that couldn't be done on the 360 (have yet to see volumetric clouds like that on anything else though...they are amazing)...

Why the hell is everyone hating on Halo? All the sony fans are saying that halo brought nothing new, not innovative, childish...ect, but what did Killzone bring that was so great? Everybody who liked the first two Halo's (and that's a LOT of people) will love Halo 3. Where did all this negative feed back for the beta come from? I didn't hear anything but positives (excepting the graphics). Anyone who thinks Killzone will destroy Halo is out of their minds. Maybe graphically, but otherwise they don't stand a chance. Killzone was nothing special, and I don't see how a souped up CG trailer makes the second one so much good.

Killzone sucked, sony hyped the F out of it and it bombed it had linear gameplay, bad controls, decent graphics and a lot of glitches. It wasn't anything close to a halo killer, it wasn't even a COD killer.

Killzone just wasn't the right game for sony to use when trying to match halo. I don't see why Killzone 2 will be any different, sony already shot themselves in the foot by making a CGI trailer and trying to pass it off as real time, they HAVE to match the quality of the graphics or else no matter how good the game is it's still a failure in the eys of a public that believed it. The game also needs to have a better story, and a more innovative gameplay and fun online. I just don't see how Killzone 2 can will be what Sony is hyping it up to be.

So many FPS's and so many of them fail to be remembered.Half life ,Halo ,Goldeneye,Doom original - there are others of course but theyre not quite in the same league.This can be argued but generally mearly enjoyable or so so games like Resistance wont ever be regarded as a treasures like Halo or Goldeneye.Crysis will likely be remembered long after but will Killzone - maybe for wrong reasons like the first one.

I really quite liked Killzone for PS2 even if it did creak under the pressure of it all - mostly though it was because of it's gritty and believable atmosphere.It was average however when compared to Halo1's gameplay and i think it's fair to say that you can't suddenly make a developer understand how to make something great.Halo3 is unlikely to have disapointing gameplay.

If Killzone proves to be both as exciting and visually jaw dropping as the trailer then i'd pay even more for a PS3 but that's a lot of ifs

I have seen many people on this site stating they would buy a PS3 when the good games start coming out.

I have never seen one person say they will buy an XBox 360 when Halo 3 is released.

The demo could be that long if they are going to be showing off the game engine aswell as the game.

Everyone seems to be running the game down, what if its not as good? or what if it is "crap" like the first?

It looks like KZ2 will crush Halo 3, same as Crysis. I don't know what some MS fanboys are smoking, but compared to all FPS games, Halo ain't anything special. On PC there are many better games than Halo, even Far Cry, Crytek's 1st game was much better than Halo 1 and 2. I don't mean of course the Ubisoft Xbox Far Cry, but the original PC version. i really don't see what the big deal about kz2 i thought the first one sux ball it didn't break records it wasn't even a must have title. Sorry but don't see alot new with Halo 3, most of the fans of Halo already have a 360. I do hope however it is a good game, because next years FPS will be amazing if KZ2 / Halo 3 are that damn good.

The trouble with alot of reviews is they always compare games of the same genre and/or cross system. I just want to know how the game plays, nice graphics are a bonus, but gameplay and multi-player options are more important.

I hope that Killzone 2 is amazing, the in game is crisp, the single player is good, huge multi-player maps etc. Not only just will this warrent what you pay for a PS3, but will prove what the console can do with a little work.

My last hope however is a release date, because if they take $200 off the price and release KZ2 this holiday season? Could be a very different Christmas.

I've never played the original Killzone, so I went to gamerankings.com to check it out. The game received an average of a 73%...decent, but far from extraordinary. Why is this new version for the PS3 receiving so much hype? Was the first one much better than the reviews showed? Is it a cult classic that I don't know about? Like I said, I'm not trying to bash this game, I'm really just curious.

I personally the first one was ranked overly hard by critics and fans because everyone called it a Halokiller for 6 months before it came out. And its not. I think the game has actually suffered because of people preconceptions. What the hell is a HaloKiller anyway? Since when does a new high benchmark in a genre make all others in the genere go away?

I'd give KZ about 85%. The AI was great, the weapons, controls, sound and feel of the game were all good. The only critisms I would have are, while the graphics were good, the framerate does stutter but never to the point where it hinders gameplay. And the game is linear and the levels short but the action and pacing are good.

And hey, am I the only one who likes Bots? Halo fans (like myself) have been calling for Bots as long as GT fans have been calling for Damage. KZ had them and they were quite good.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like it's a pretty good game that just didn't quite live up to its expectations. I guess people are assuming that the second one will improve on the little things that made it not quite a "Halo killer" last time?

The psp version is incredible! i love the fast-paced action and of course the weapons. The gameplay is very impressive. My favorite psp game so far. I'm not worried about KZ ps3 8)

When this game does come out, I hope everyone doesn't just look at its graphic for 5 minutes and say "Nay this game sux" or "Halos better." I think we'll be missing the point.

All everyone cares about is, Does it look like the trailer, because if it doesn't "Sony lied to me!" WAH!

This game will look gorgeous, thats a given. It probably will look better than Halo3, because Halo just looks good, not special, but forget about that, thats not the big deal.

This games will be good because I'm guessing in might be the first truly next gen game yet. I'm hoping the AI will be real step up. An obvious raising of the bar. The AI was great in the first. Replaying a level, even though it was linear and scripted, ever encounter seemed to play a different way each time. Quite often changing depending on how you had reacted. I'd love to see the AI with a squad fanning out to take cover like a squad, and as it starts to go bad for them, individuals start to lose it.

Environmental degradation
Did someone say in the tech Demo when they shot bullet through the walls, realtime lighting actual shone through. Perhaps this means no more textures of bullet holes stuck to walls. The bullet may chip at brick or splitter wood and leave a hole you can pear through. I know we've seen broken windows, doors and occasionally, a scripted wall but I'm trying to think bigger than that. I mean, what if you could see a damaged wall section above some covered enemies. Shooting at it dislodges the bricks and falls down on them. Not because it was a set up trap. Because the weight physics of the brinks and the damaged mortar made the wall crumbly and thus susceptible to gunfire.

Keep those awesome weapons and give us new ones. Remember their rifles. The automatic with the shotty round as a secondary fire. Man what an awesome finisher. The stealthy chicks pistol (if you can call it that) one of the best guns ever, (I like to go quiet.) It was nice having different characters (different play styles/weapon sets) too. Maybe a bit more differences to flesh them out a bit.

I'm starting to ramble.

Killzone 2 might be nothing like this. It might end just being a really good solid shooter, like the first one. Sony never called KZ a Halo killer, everyone else did and then KZ suffered for it because most people write it off because it isn't a Halokiller. Now this time everyone gonna say it didn't deliver or was overhyped and yet it hasn't been at all. We've created it all ourselves. I guess my overriding point would be, people who let their expectation ruin something good for them, need to stop reading the net so much, or at accept something for what it actually is, not what you've heard about it.

A good story the whole story line for Halo didnt even make sense to begin with if all this time the humans should be fighting against floods and you call that a good story line that is innovative yeah right you wish bungie is just going to bring back everything that they put in Halo and Halo 2 and nothing new except the new weapons and vehicles that they wanted to put in Halo 2 but couldnt and decided to put the new things in Halo 3 so whats so innovative in Halo 3 that Killzone doesnt have like say destructable enviorments or lets say if players were destroying the landscape in Halo 3 and actually destroying the Halo that they are in and floating in space while trying to destroy one another and vehicles floating in space yeah so that would be really innotvative right there and the whole cattapaulte in Halo 3 is just stupid because thats not creative thats just dumb I'mean all you can do is just get shot up in the air and look down to see where other players are big whoop how can that be creative.

I tend to think one of two things here....

1) This is in a sense and open time for them to come and see Killzone 2...i.e. we will be showing this off for your time slot between 10:30 to 1:00 pm so some come when you want. (probably not that likely)

2) It's Sony's press conference and they are highlighting Killzone 2. (most likely)

I find it hard to believe that ANY press person would spend a full 2 1/2 hours previewing one game at E3 when there is so much to cover and so very limited time in the big scheme of it. At most, I would think 1/2 hour and move on to other games.

The event is scheduled July 10th. They're scheduled conference is July 11th. This is an additional event prior to their 2.5 hour conference the following day. Plus, this is by private invitation, it's not for every attending person at E3, just those that have received a physical invitation. The invitations are limited to 150. So likely, and this is an assumption, it will be a preview followed by a hands on demo for Killzone 2, and possibly an additional game. (although Killzone is the only one advertised on the invitation)

I have said it before and I will say it again. Guerilla games has not made one single good game let alone a excellent one. Killzone was widely panned in every review it received. Halo 2 sold more copies in pre order than killzone sold all together; some halo killer. This will be a let down just like killzone was. Think rationally and not like fanboys for a moment. Shellshock was crap. Killzone was so-so and FOR GODSAKE THEY MADE CRAPPY GBA GAMES UNTIL THEY MADE KILLZONE!!!! Tiny toon adventures: dizzy's candy quest people!!! IGN- Here's where it gets sticky. The AI is terrible and the scripted combat isn't very exhilarating. But then it looks and sounds so good.

Gamespy- Terrible AI on both sides; tons of graphical glitches; lack of physics; repetitive gameplay.

thats smart. give those people something to right about. give them a recap of the trailer released in 2005, then drop the new trailer. which will probably be longer. then let it run right into a title screen and the demo begins... have a developers commentary on it while a dev is playing it then have a small seminar on the engine and stuff and compare how much you gotten out of the ps3 to what the first trailer is all about, then when everyones dying to get there hands on the controller end it with play seesions for everyone who attended and tell them to take pictures and HD vids but hold off on showing the internet untill july 12. when Sony shows the world KILLZONE for the ps3... then after all that happens announce that the game will drop in october and that a beta test of the multiplayer is going to be going on in august and then a single player demo will grac the ps3 inseptember just a few weeks after the beta traial ends... then Sony should then say that a Killzone limited edition PS3 will be made availible with a special KILLZONE skin and a copy of KILLZONE included in the bock coupled with an HDMI cable... that would be awesome.
