PS3 Crosses the 30 Million Sold Mark

The latest weekly sales numbers show that it has reached another milestone, and that Sony has made great progress in closing the gap between PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Look at the difference in market share between PS2 and Xbox 1. Pretty impressive on Sony's part, right? Even if the PS3 surpasses the 360 in sales, which it probably will, look at the difference in market share now between the two companies. Exactly. I think MS did something right, which is close the market share gap.

If the PS4 doesn't offer a new media format advantage over competitors like the PS 1-3 did, then there's a possibility that MS will gain even more ground next time around. MS is definitely headed in the right direction and to all those people hoping that MS leaves the industry, which seem to be a lot of you, don't hold your breath.

On a separate note, the PS3 is doing exactly what I said it would do when it first came out, and that is have a rocky start, but eventually pick up steam as it gets closer to the magic $199 price point. The PS3's best days are ahead of it. It is the long distance runner in this race. Come to think of it, the 360's best days are still ahead too with Natal coming out and better graphics in games. I think the Wii's best days are behind it.

I dont think GOW will move too many systems, people who played the past PS2 games will buy a PS3 for it but Im not expecting anything big.

GT5 will be huge, though. Another game that I suspect will move systems is Agent. The 360 GTA crowd will want to eat that game up, and if Sony and Take 2 treat it like GTA, it'll definitely be something nig.

I do recall people saying it wont surpass the ps2. Last gen the games were cheap and the system was too. This gen it will take a little longer to get to the mass market price point on the games (under $50) and the hardware to reach that sweet spot (under $150).

It will eventually which is why I am glad sony has their 10 year plan. I never heard people (even sarcastically) saying the ps3 will never sell X amount in its lifetime. I think you are over exaggerating...just a bit.

In one month the PS3 will cut the gap by one million. PS3 can easily tie 360's install base in one year. They just need to outsell the 360 on average 400,000 units every month to do that feat. Now the PS3 almost amounted to 400,000 units lead in one week.

On the topic of VGChartz, every time Sony has announced sales figures (no matter what anyone tells you, Sony reports sell-through now) they're always about a million more then what is on VGChartz. VGChartz gives us estimates. It would be nearly impossible to track total sales around the world. So don't take the numbers as factual, but as indicators. If a game sell 1 million according to VGChartz, then we can be damn sure it has sold AROUND a million copies. You can't expect VGChartz to be spot on with every single game and all the consoles wordwide. Shoot, the NPD doesn't track Wallmart or online retailers, and people take their numbers as gospel.

What like underestimating the PS3 to the tune of 2 million when Sony announced crossing 27 million (VG Chartz had them at ~25 million at the time). That sort of evidence? (for the record, conversely VGchartz's 360 worldwide numbers have always been in excess of Microsofts).

Even if the numbers were a couple hundred thousand low, it will have crossed 30 million by christmas. We all should congratulate Sony in achieving what nobody ever thought they would this soon. Nobody would have ever imagined them closing the gap with 360 to less than 6 million, and if they keep up their pace they will have it down to less than 5 million by the end of their fiscal year (march 31). That is one heck of a feat... and I'm sure it has given Microsoft a wake up call.

All of this stiff competition will equal better games and services for all of us, so no matter which console you play, you need to be happy about this!

Well yea, the ps3 is selling alot because it got the slim series, and the holidays are here, and the price cut. Im sure that if sony cut the price on the fat ps3 and didnt release the slim, it wouldnt of sold alot. But as soon as January 2010 comes. Both the 360 and ps3 are going to stay at an idle position. Probably Mass Effect and Conviction are going to notch up a few sales on the 360 and GOW and GT5 are going to increase ps3 sales as well.

But lets get to the facts here. As soon as Natal is released, its going to highly boost 360 sales. "Sony motion controller, will too, but it wont have the same impact Natal is going to have."

It was @ germany that sony ps3 sold 27 milion worldwide (gamescom) when VGchartz stated 24 milion or 25. 2-3 milion is not a small mistake.

So they constantly stated 2-3 milion lower score to christmas to cover it up with enourmous sales.

My point is that this 30 milion may be actually more by milion or two.

Especialy when Vgchartz count others where always xbox is in tie with ps3, there are no other places like uk or usa in the world now where xbox360 leads sales. Europe without UK is PS3/Wiioriented, brasil egipt, lots of "other" countries are outside of MS hardware reach. And Sony is selling their hardware all over the world. So Other sales should be always for ps3... but it isn't :)

with more sold, sony will have more money to invest in more big budget blockbuster games like uncharted 2. it also will strengthen competition, which will lead to the others having to fight harder to keep their place. this will lead to microsoft and nintendo releasing better games and services to compete... so it's a win/win for everyone.

For Microsoft will have shown to be completely worthless. Going from a 10 million unit lead to a 0 unit lead will be the breaking point for their marketing team, which already emphasizes "Attach Rates" over hard figures, such as hardware sales and software sales.

A lot more studios are going to risk making PS3 exclusives once it breaches the 40 million mark next Fall. The exclusives that are coming from Sony's first party studios, such as Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2, are making it tough for multiplats to keep up. And God of War III and GT5 should really put on the pressure to make their games better.

actually, MS lost 7 billion $'s on the first xbox, then another billion on the RROD fiasco, so they still lose no matter how you look at it. Sony has also lost $, but nowhere near as much. They also won a format war with the PS3 that will make them BILLIONS more in the end off of blu-ray royalties than they ever lost with PS3, so it was more than worth it to them. Microsoft doesn't have any such thing to show for all the money they lost on Xbox.

The only reason Microsoft would outsell PS3 is the simple fact that most people who HAVE a 360 have probably amassed quite a few games. how about stepping back for a second, and realizing that had the 2 consoles launched at the same time, judging by the rate they've both sold in the same time frame, PS3 would have outsold 360 by a wide margin. That even though 360 was on the market for a full year longer, PS3 has almost eliminated that lead it generated with that 1 year head start, all the while costing as much as twice as much and "not having any games" as you folks like to say. Yep. That overpriced blu-ray player has done that. It's done so well, that people like you have to attempt to make it look like it launched a new console when they took the same hardware and put it in a new case in order to rationalize your belief that it has sold less than 360.

2010 will be the PS3's peak year. It's had an amazing run since the price cut and redesign but the first half of this year was horrible, doing even worse than 2008's mediocre numbers. Next year will be the first full year at a mass market price and with all of the major software coming out, especially GT5, it will ensure an enormous YOY growth. If it does 12 million this year I can easily see it doing 15 million next year.

These people stating that Sony count sold to retailers need to look back at Q3 2008 when Sony moved to Nintendo style sold figures meaning sold to consumers.Before then Sony counted "shipped" meaning sold to retailers.Now MS count "sold" but mean sold to retailers and are the only ones using those figures now.
