PS2 is repeating itself with PS3, domination begins in 2010

Can anyone remember what it was like when Sony's Playstation 2 came on the scene? If you've been following the industry long enough, you would conclude that the PS3's launch was almost identical to that of its predecessor. People complained about the price, doom and gloom articles were all over the place, and developers moaned over the architecture of the then new hardware. It's the same with PS3 today, but look at what's happening now; Sony is set to dominate again, just like the PS2 before it and the comparisons invoke dejavu. We'll remind you.

I unfortunately read the article, and it fails to realize one big thing that ISN'T similar to the PS2's heyday...

THE COMPETITION.

XBOX 1 tried. Failed.
Dreamcast tried. Failed.
CD-I tried. Failed.
Gamecube tried. Failed.

But this time is different. The little boys are MEN now. :-)

Nintendo has secured the "casual market" that Playstation once commanded, and XBOX360 came out early and commanded the HD Market.

In addition, XBOX360 bought out the Third Party Franchises that made the Playstation 2 a juggernaut. Those franchises have not only been released on XBOX360, but they have outsold and in most cases, outshined their PS3 counterparts.

So sorry Gamethirst and myopic Sony Fans. It's over. This generation isn't and WON'T be anything like the last one.

Yes, Sony PS3 is doing a little better these days, but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Hardware may be moving, but the software isn't. And that's a major problem for Sony in the short term AND the long term.

And by the way... Here comes XBOX360's 2010 lineup.

Thetruth, answer me a question. Why has the PS3 been constantly outselling the 360 and also selling faster than the 360 since launch. You also seem to forget that the 360 has a ONE year head start which certainly compliments to it's lead against the PS3.

Without the one year, MS would be down the toilet right now and the 360 wouldn't have sold nearly as much. and YOU KNOW THAT. Don't act like the 360 is doing so great. MS has lost billions due to RROD and other hardware issues. They have almost non existant first parties and rely on their pockets to get games. IMO, the PS3 is the true and only successor to the PS2. The 360 will NEVER achieve the greatness that Sony managed to get with the PS1 and PS2.

In a few years, when we look back, we shall cherish our memories of the PS1 and PS2. We'll look back at games that revolutionized consoles such as Uncharted and Killzone. Here's your history:

The XBOX360 was released on November 22nd, 2005.
A year later, on November 17th, 2006 when the PS3 released, the XBOX360 had sold approximately 5.5 million units of hardware.
That total is now over 7 million.

So this myth that the PS3 is selling MORE and FASTER than the XBOX360 is falling on deaf ears. When the price drop happened last year, the XBOX360 has been bludgeoning the PS3 in sales every month.

That is, until the desperate move by Sony of releasing the PS3 Slim.

Yes, PS3 has won a couple of months since the release, but that's to be expected.

Myopic Sony Fans like to use that argument to make themselves feel better: "PS3 is selling more in its third year than XBOX360 did in its third year! So that means it's selling MORE and FASTER than the XBOX360! SEE!"

NO. ONE. CARES.

The lead is still massive. And for the mighty Playstation to be subjected to using quotes like that only proves that Nintendo and Microsoft have already slayed the beast.

Not to mention, Sony Fans don't buy software. XBOX360 Fans DO. We support Microsoft AND the developers that provide us these terrific titles. Arcade titles too.

Why do you think you never see PSN title sales figures? Sony doesn't want the embarrassment of that comparison to XBOX Live.

The new machine has much more going for it. I refuse to even call the PS3 a games console, that label does the machine no justice at all.

Having this all in one machine has made everything great! Instead of so many things on the TV stand, I know have to Bravia HDTV + PS3 Media Center + Bravia Tru-HD Surround System. One remote does it all.

I have been looking for that all my adult life without having the cheap or flashy all in one remote and a mile of spaghetti wire behind the TV stand.

The PS3 is going to sell more than the PS2 by the time it's 10 year life is out...

Also, blu-ray is here to stay. Pioneer are selling the 400GB Blu-Ray disc from 2010-2011, all you need is firmware update to read it. All BD 2.0 Players (that is every BD player now in production) will be able to read the 400GB disc.

As of earlier this year, Pioneer are starting to develope that 1TB Blu-Ray disc, again, just a firmware update needed. This disc will hold over 10 hours of 3D video at 4K quality running at 60FPS. BD 12x speed read is 432Mbit/s.... enough to support it.

4K is Cinema Quality. On a 50" TV it is over 6 times sharper than 1080p.

PS3 will still sell well into PS4's third year because of this.

Another point of comparison is the issue of piracy. The Dreamcast, just like the Xbox 360 today, was plagued with piracy. The same exact thing is happening with 360, and thats because the 360 and Dreamcast both used "previous-gen" formats, thus making it easy to pirate the software.

It really does feel like deja vu. The only difference is that the 360 and Microsoft will never go broke the way Sega did. Even if Microsoft continues to lose millions of dollars, they can afford to and would let themselves lose a lot of money just to stay in the market.

First, the ps2 suffered the worst piracy of the last gen, due to the widespread modchip community which embraced the ps2 architecture.

Thus, a vast number of gamers on ps2 actually copied their games.
This explains the relatively low attach rate for the ps2.

Further, if anyone is financially in trouble, then it is Sony.
MS has posted two consecutive years of profits on the 360, while SONY hasn't posted a single quarter of ps3 profits.

In fact, the ps3 is reputed to have cost SONY an astounding $4.7 billion in investment losses, with further losses on sku sales compounding these losses!

These are just the facts, dude.

You ignored the fact that the ps2 has, in nominal terms, many orders of magnitude greater piracy than the 360 or the dreamcast.
I pointed out, accurately, that the ps2 has a very low attach rate due to piracy... Conversely, the 360 has a record high attach rate.

The PS2 was also criticized for a high price point, being difficult to develop for, selling the hardware at a loss, for including the (at the time) expensive DVD format but two things happened around year two that helped it. Sony dropped the price and released some of the best games of all time back to back. The PS2 took off from there and the rest is history.

This gen we saw much the same thing but PS3 sales stayed fairly strong despite it's high price point, outselling the 360 head to head since the PS3 launched worldwide to become the 3rd fastest selling console in history. Sony's games division after taking the initial hit from R&D and pricing even managed 3 profitable quarters (one in 2007 and two in 2008) before...THE RECESSION. As the US dollar and the Euro tanked versus the Yen, even though Sony had made their game division profitable they couldn't escape the 25% decline in the US/Euro currency any more than any other Japanese electronics maker even though Sony confirmed that the PS3 was profitable as a platform and still would be even with the price cuts associated with the Slim.

Quite the contrast from Microsoft's games division and their clever accounting. By writing off over a billion dollars a couple of years ago for warranty repairs they effectively took it off their financial sheets for a few years. Even though they're still losing hundreds of millions in warranty repairs currently, it's not reflected on their books anymore and it keeps the analysts from talking about the ongoing drain of it.
Imagine you know you'd lose billions over the next few years. Now imagine you say one quarter "We just lost a billion." The shareholders cry, but they get over it and then you can go back to saying "Oh look! Now we're making money!" and everyone feels better even though you're still losing that money, you just aren't reporting it quarterly anymore.

So that leads us to where we are now. The recession is winding down, consumer spending is picking up, the PS3 is $299 and the game lineup is second to none. Given the circumstances, it really just looks like the PS3 really taking off was simply delayed due to the economic crisis, but now all the pieces seem to be falling into place for it.

MS should really decide. When they came into this gen, they wanted to be like Sony and they didn't care how much money they had to fork over. Now, all of a sudden, they've changed their minds and are following Nintendo. Unfortunately, I have a feeling their plan will once again fail. The PlayStation and Nintendo brands are STILL a LOT more powerful than the Xbox brand. Now that the PS3 is very affordable, there's no doubt the casuals will go with either the PS3 or the Wii.

MS needs to find their own identity. They're never gonna be PlayStation and they're never gonna be Nintendo. While Sony IS releasing motion controls, they have made it clear that it's not their priority. MS on the other hand has everything put on Natal. If Natal fails, the 360 is going down with it.

I agree with your predictions; however, it's the Wii that I don't know about. It's a given that the PS3 will outsell the 360; however it seems the Wii can really surprise us. We'll have to wait and see.

It's very unlikely that at the end of this generation all the consoles will be "neck and neck." It almost never works out that way in any type of industry.

Are you expecting for all the consoles to sell like 75 million each?

Not gonna happen. Microsoft is already making internal shifts to make the 360 a more casual console towards the end of its life to prolong its relevance. Their reasoning is that once casual Wii owners get tired of the Wii, they will essentially move onto the 360, which will be a much more powerful version of the Wii by that time. Think about it. The 360 with Natal will basically be what many will imagine a Wii2 being. It will have HD, casual games that don't require a controller. Hence, it will be perceived as a natural progression of tech, and by 2010, it will be dirt cheap. That's Microsoft's plan, I think.

Sony will continue to support the PS3 for as long as it can while keeping an eye out for when Microsoft plans on releasing the X3.

Nintendo will have to figure out what new blue ocean they have to find to supplement their unique existence in the console market. By 2010, all three consoles will have motion control tech to some degree, so the Wii will no longer be creative.

I predict that at the end, when all is said and done:

Sony Playstation 3: 110 million
Nintendo Wii: 85 million
Microsoft Xbox 360: 75 million

I still doubt Blu-Ray's success in the mainstream media market. However, it's inclusion into consoles has proven to be fruitful. I just don't feel that Blu-Ray is being adopted fast enough by the mainstream media. You do realize that right now, there are several alternatives being developed that will greatly advanced the storage capacity and abilities of optical discs. Digital distribution is starting to take over the computer medium. I would love it if Blu Ray proves me wrong though, because that just means that I finally caught the technology as early as everyone else.

If I were Microsoft I would be buying studios instead of paying for timed exclusives. All Microsoft needs to get the ball rolling is a bunch of in-house studios working with the technology. Have you played with a Zune HD yet. It's pretty slick, it seems to have some awesome graphics and the UI is really slick. It's not a game device (though it does have some games) but using the same core technology in a different package with real physical controls could produce a competitive handheld game machine. And the next iteration of the NVidia chip is supposed to have something like 4 times the power. The only problem is the price, the Zune costs too much already without the additional costs needed to make a handheld.

Seriously, I ordered a ps3 bundle on Amazon. NO LIE. When it arrives, why keep it? From the beginning of 2010, I get Mass Effect 2. Then throughout the year, I get Alan Wake which looks astounding, Splinter Cell Conviction, Halo Reach, Crackdown 2, Fable 3 and any other multi-plats like BFBC2, Bioshock 2, Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 2, and lets not forget about XBLA and NATAL. I've been saying this for ever. Price was a big problem with most of those systems. Also just like 3do and the neo geo Sony has no games to get other excited about their system.

If you had a 3do jag or lynx or turbo or super grafx then you know what the market likes. It's not features it is games. It will do as good as the PS2, mostly because every little thing bad about the PS2 (No hard drive/ hard drive that can be bought anywhere and free online) PS2 didn't have all that an more then 2 controllers hook to it without another add on equip.

So in the long run, PS3 is giving us more right out of the box then the PS2 did and that is mostly what makes it do as good as PS2 in my book.

I used to have a original xbox and the 360, but currently I own all PS consoles on the market. (PSP go, PS2 and PS3).
My experience is
PS brand >>> Xbox brand
The reasons are honest truth
The original xbox left us gamers out in the dark when games stopped coming while the PS2 library was growing exponentially, then MS says " Here is the 360, Jump In or be left out". I did Jump In with the 360, but this time around MS made sure 360 owners suffer the consequences of their arrogance (and greed). RROD hit my console, as it happens to many gamers. WAY too expensive accessories (did you know that the oficial way to use HDMI and getting the audio to another source with the white/red output is by buying the 360 adapter? the other way is to damage your own adapter, but that can be risky). Ms greed shows all over the place, with $60 DLC games, Silver members get treated as if they do not support the console, no access to demos early, Live offers were only for Gold members, in summary if one does not pay for the Gold shaft, the 360 experience is tremendously crippled (no online Gaming).
I actually sold my 360 based on the reasons I just gave. Currently I Want to buy another 360 because the console does have good games, in the marketplace and in the stores, and im a gamer at heart. But when i look back at my experience with the 360, i remember why i sold it and why i cant put myself in that position again.

Now for the PS brand
The PS2 plays DVDs without the need of buying the controller (xbox required you to buy the controller, greedy). The PS2 library is amazing, i got it late, so i went on a buying frenzy and thx god i did. GoW, SoTC, RE4, RnC Up your Arsenal etc etc Great great library. I like my PS2 a LOT. The PSP Go is great, the 3000 does the same and more (UMD drive) so in general the PSP is awesome for great games on the go. And now with the PS one Classics is all good.
The PS3.
Out of the box everything you need for a great experience. Rechargeble controllers, Wi Fi, HDD, Blu Ray!, Optical Output, FREE online gaming, and very important a reliable console. The games speak for themselves, and i understand that game choice come down to personal opinion, but i like what i see coming for the PS3 on a monthly basis.
Gamer beware, the 360 has some of the best games around, and one of the most careless greedy companies behind it. If the 360 was reliable i would not have sold mine, which is dissapointing because as a gamer i want to play ME and Splinter Cell, but that is the way i choose it to be. Game on

I think Sony is more concerned about their whole gaming division in general than specifically the ps3 line up. They are suceeding in transitioning over to the ps3 as the main device. Had they dropped the ps2 immediatly like the competion they would have lost alot of market share..... Some fanboys are quite close minded cuz they focus on each generation

There definately is evidence Sony could do well sooon. But I still feel it wont be able to surpass the competition in the UK and northern America, in most of Europe it is more of a success however (because people there actually respect quality) and will continue to do well. Sony Europe need to stop being retards too... if they want the UK market.

600 dollars is cringe-worthy, but if MS and Nintendo don't pull out exclusives like we know sony will. Sony will win again. Sony has always has expectations for their devs to move forward in their craft and deliver quality. They won't make it easy for them. Nintendo I always kinda knew was going to sell alot (I think everyone kinda saw it coming), I just didn't know that they would totally sell out like they did. And as much as the fanboys refuse to admit it, MS could never compete with sony when it came to exclusives. Yeah they grabbed up quite a bit, but every single one of them came out lackluster compared to how they used to be. (Tekken, Star Ocean, DMC, GTA, Ace Combat, etc.) at least when Ninty gets ahold of a Sony franchise (RE) it makes huge improvements over past iterations.

can someone please tell me about DRM on sony's machine? I'm getting royally PO'd with MS and their bs DRM rules screwing me over just to protect themselves from pirates (which they apparently can't do anyway). tired of not being able to view my tv shows I've spent hundred$ on or use my DLC packs when not connected to XBL, all thanks to their faulty hardware.

so my question is, does sony do the same? or can u freely use any DLC even when not connected to PSN? even if it's not your 'originating console'?

as far as i know if you are talking about psn downloads i think you can use them on up to five different ps3's (you have to login to your profile from other ps3's to do this).
also you don't have to be connected to psn to play/view your downloads (unless its a multiplayer game that is lol)
i think you will find that sony is alot more giving than microsoft, give them a chance and you will find out all of the benefits of the ps3.

He forgot to add White Knight to that list of titles. Sony is doing great with the PS3 like they did with the PS2 and Sonys ideas of adding new technology to a system is a good idea. But when the PS4 arrives I hope the titles are worth it thats usually the only problem Sony faces with any new console is a great launch of titles.

Seeing as how the newest reported numbers show the 360 only has about 4 or 5 mil more consoles sold worldwide as it had 8-10 like a year ago. Plus You forget Gran Turismo 5 will do huge in europe (anyone doubting it is a shortsighted moron), and Final Fantasy 13 and versus being exclusive in Japan is a million consoles sold guaranteed, the 360 lead will shrink even smaller. Natal had better be one beast of peripheral as it seems to be MS's final flagship besides Halo Reach (and if that game doesn't look better than KZ2, the hype train for that will come to a screaching halt). Which is the problem cause MS is placing all bets on a franchise that has delivered so little and a controller-scheme that alienated it's current demographic when Nintendo did it (It would HAVE to have a larger impact on the gaming industry than the wiimote, and this is after the awe of motion controllers has become doubt, to really keep up with releases like God of War 3 and GT5) Alan Wake and Splinter Cell continue to look less and less impressive as the days go by. (Yeah they look like great games and I'll be playing them, but Alan Wake was supposed to be on the same level as Heavy Rain, and Conviction was was supposed to be up there with MGS4, both don't come close, and we continue to hear about gameplay mechanics and features getting tossed out on both titles.)

This guy must not have been around for the PS2 launch, because the PS3's life has shown few similarities to date.

The PS2 was severely supply constrained for months after launch. In North America the PS3 was supply constrained for about 2 weeks with adequate supply by Christmas. The ability to make "big bucks" on eBay lasted approximately 2 weeks. The PS2 was sold out everywhere for months after launch.

The PS2 had a significant DRE hardware problem that affected a large percentage of launch units, the PS3 has shown no such hardware problems. Even with that, people were excited about the DVD drive and the storage capability compared to CD. It was a strong selling point of the console.

There were not significant complaints about its price. The Saturn previously launched at $399. The PlayStation 1 launched at $299. The PS2 launched at $299 and people accepted this price because the bar had been set in the previous generation.

There were not "doom and gloom" articles all over the place. The media and gamers were excited about the launch. PlayStation was already king of the hill when the PS2 launched and that momentum carried right on over. There was no other console on the market that was eating away at PlayStation's market share. There was nothing else like it.

The list goes on and on. This blog is drivel. I don't see how anyone takes it seriously. The PS3 is successful, but successful in its own right. But, as always, let the flamewar ensue.

Sony are good at what they do and history is bound to repeat itself. There is no way that the Wii is going to compete with the hardcore systems. The 360 of course is a dying bread(physically as well.)In fact I was invite to my best friends LAN party last night, they all have 360s. We were going to play Halo 3, COD:MW2, COD:WAW and Left for dead. But one thing was stopping us from doing so. As soon as he turned on his 6 month old 360 he had gotten the RROD(this would be his 6th 360). We only had one 360 and that was barely enough for split screen on Nazi Zombies and team death-match. The only form of entertainment that we got was watching the 360 overheat from the "towel trick" they thought would fix the RROD problem.(It didn't work but was entertaining non the less). My friends mother said she would by him another 360 so He was relieved.
We ended up playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta on my ps3 for the night.(sounded great on my friends surround Sound System)

i didnt jump on the ps2 bandwagon right away when it came out so i cant say anything about the similarities between ps2 and ps3. but here is my opinion to this "console fanboy war" as a semi-neutral bystander with a hopefully objective point of view. ill try to break it down by logical arguments:

for me the blogpost goes along with some of my own thoughts about the decision to buy a console. i currently own the ps2slim/wii/ps3slim. my ps2 is a lot older and i just recently got the ps3. i DID consider buying an xbox360 between the ps2 and ps3!

the "gamer market" now cant be compared to the old one in the past anymore. nowadays the market is a lot bigger with other mainstream consumers than just "hardcore" gamers. those are:
1. hardcore gamers
2. casual gamers
3. family/party gamers
4. console media users

these groups arent that well devided and most of the console users are something inbetween. but breaking them apart in groups helps the next step to allocate them to each console.

wii: 2+3 with attempts to step into 1 though they are at there limits imo because of the old hardware

xbox360: 1/2 with their natal project set up to add the group 3 (if it succeeds which is not quite certain yet, im still sceptical since i never saw and felt by my own how that thing actually works)

ps3: 1-4, for those who dont believe it -> 1/2 is clear since thats the same market they are sharing with xbox (exclusives, multiplats blabla), 3 is definetly pretty much in nintendos hands at the moment but sony does have eyetoy and the upcoming motion wand technology (lets be honest they totally overslept that trend and i am sure that sonys motion controller will work since it just a better copy of wii...) and lastly 4 as mediaserver and blueray home-entertainment system.

now to the conclusion of that.
its clearly shown in this short list that the ps3 has the best possibilities to support all groups with the right games/features while the wii has a hardware blockage and the xbox is missing technology and motion(yet) features. so 2010 will see the fall of wii since the prices of the "better" consoles went down a lot and on top also getting ready to compete with nintendo over the 3rd group of consumers with the help of new "motion" hardware. so wether ms or sony will win over those is still uncertain. though it safe to assume that nintendo is going to loose shares. if not late 2010 then at latest 2011.

now that could mean that sony will not dominate after all if natal succeeds...
BUT!
a lot of people are still forgetting something. lets do the math: 150mil ps2s, according to sales about 32mil xbox360s and 28mil ps3s (thats just an estimate. dont take me literally plz). those are the gamers of the last generation, group 1+2. the 3rd group is represented by wii with about 75mil.
150 - 32 - 28 = 90mil. ok not everyone is going to get a console again. but its safe to assume "where are the up to 90mil casual gamers of the last generation?" (again dont take me litarally, i know that a lot of people bought 2 or more ps2 over time). i dont think it includes hardcore gamers since those usually are the first to jump to the next gen hardware.

i am for instance a good example of that group. since im not that into console gaming i was indifferent what i should get. the ps3 was too expensive the xbox360 unknown to me. back then i just played final fantasy, GoW, PoP, singstar and way back GT on ps2. usual casual stuff aight? the wii i got because my gf wanted it, she belongs partly to the 3rd group.

to sum up my train of thought: i actually planned to get a ps3 once FF13 would be released in EU. that was under the assumption that it wouldve been an exclusive like it always had been. after the announcement to go multiplat from SE it was open if xbox or ps3. but considering the other titles like GoW and GT as well as the additional BD and hardwarespecs: it became an easy choice. especially when sony came with the slim version + heavy pricecuts.

you get my point right? if someone like me is an example for the casual gamer group. you can bet on it that there are hell lot of others of those 90mil which have exactly the same idea and were waiting for the old classics to be released and the ps3 to get cheaper. they/i dont care about which console has the best graphics(multiplat) or new exclusives/franchises. FF13 is coming and so is GoW and finally GT5. all those ps2 owners in sleepmode are going to wake up soon. so expect the ps3 to stamp and crush any other console in 2010. believe it or not thats how it will play out...

It seems that journalists are just very quick to judge. You need to look at the entire lifespan of a console before you can declare it a "failure" or a "success".

Ok the xbox 360 console reliability is really crap. I'm not trying to hide anything it's the truth. It's actually the only console that has broken on me that much before. At least it doesnt collect dust though. Be sure to buy a warranty is all I'm saying lol. I have more fun playing the xbox 360 though because it has a better social network. Theres more to it than that but I think I had you guys read enough by now. I'm not trying to be biased, I just prefer the xbox 360. I guess it's just a preference of mine. I think the ps3 is good because it's keeping competitors busy though. I'm happy that they chose the free route. Let's not be silly and say it has outsold other consoles though. Sony is still important, I hope their next console will have even better online for free. I want them to step on MS toes so they dont take advantage. Ps3 biggest accomplishment has been the blue ray hands down. As for games its had a few throw in here and there so far. The games just dont have as much logevity to them. P.S. COD games are better played on xbox 360.

MGS came out on the original NES same with FF and the RE franchise isn't sony's it's Capcoms. Give sony credit for being sneaky and stealing Nintendo's original idea of going with cd base format instead of cartridge in the n64 era, Nintendo pretty much handed them the market by not going with cd as they had originally planed. Sony capitalised on Nintendo's F up and with a little help from Square (FFVII) sony took off. The Revolutionaries and Pioneer are still Nintendo. Even though I think the wii sucks. Sony did nothing but still an idea that worked for them in the end.
