Killzone 2 September Release to Counter Halo?

According to the recent Gamepro Magazine, Dutch developer Guerrilla is coming along in their development of Killzone 2. According to the magazine Killzone could appear already in September of this year.

I am an Xbox lover. I like it better than my PS3. But Halo is just a mediocre game that happens to be better than a lot of other crap out on consoles.

As a PC gamer first and foremost, I can tell you that the BEST shooter (on consoles) to be released this year will be the Half-Life 2 for BOTH the PS3 and Xbox 360.

So never fear, both systems are being treated to a great game. Leave Halo 3 and Killzone 2 on the store shelf until it comes down in price and do yourself a favor.

First off you can't really say that. You never know! If Killzone 2 is said to counter Halo 3 then there is a lot we must see with KIllzone 2. You can't say its going to suck. JasonHenry - The Half-Life 2 package for the X360 and the PS3 is going to be awesome, just for the sheer content available in it. The problem that the PS3 has though is that HL2 in not out until next year, whereas the X360 get's it this year in Oct/Nov, still giving gamers a good month or two to enjoy Halo 3, which many game will disagree with you that it's mediocre, but it's all about personal taste!

I didn't say there IS NOTHING that can counter Halo 3, I said I can't see anything countering Halo 3, which is a personal prediction and in which I could be wrong!

I also didn't mention anything about Killzone sucking, you brought up the sucking part. I also didn't mention anything about graphics towards Halo 3 or Killzone. Yet again, that's something you brought up.

I totally agree with Snoop Dizzel though. If Sony show off Killzone 2, and it play and runs like the trailer they shown at E3'05, and then gets great reviews as well (because a lot of people buy games based on reviews...I do sometimes!), then maybe they could counter Halo 3, but it'll be tough! They tried it with the original Killzone against Halo 2, but it didn't do too well at all, just because it played like crap and the reviews were awful. Sony need to make sure that it doesn't happen to KZ2!

We all know that the Beta is just a slimed down version of what the actual gameplay and features will offer. So unless the Sony Execs have 360's, bought Crackdown for the beta access and took the time to do the custom game gllitch, there is not much for them to go on. Well Sony has been "borrowing" ideas through this whole generation and consumer respect follows accordingly to the innovator, not the copycat... and as for now Sony has lost a lot of respect imo. It wouldn't suprise me that they will "borrow" ideas from Halo3. But as we are gamers with actual brains, we can see all the stolen ideas and lack of creativity that makes up the PS3. Killzone is a PS3 exclusive. Halo is a 360 exclusive. I'm not sure what there is to "counter". If Sony thinks they could sway some hardware sales by releasing Killzone concurrently with Halo, I think they may need to rethink that idea. Halo is a proven franchise that is capable of driving hardware sales. While Killzone is also a proven franchise, I don't think it has the kind of clout that would sway people away from Halo IMO. Even despite all the reports of underachieving graphics coming from the Halo multiplayer beta, I think it will still be the most anticipated game release to date. That's going to be extremely hard to counter.

but depending on how Killzone 2 has come along would be the deciding factor on if putting it out in September is a good idea. I mean halo 3 is hyped to the fullest but that doesn't mean it will completely overshadow Killzone 2. Sony could market it with the intent to compare it to Halo 3 and that will make people take a look at it because they will want to see if it stands up to the juggernaut that Halo is. I don't think it will be released in September but we have no info on it hardly so i think Sony may have some tricks up their sleeves. It wouldn't surprise me if they did do it though.

Wrong. E3 awards went mostly to Gears of War and other MS platform games. Want proof? Here you are!

The only award MGS got was:

Now the only way Sony could even attempt to counter Halo 3 with any game is if they sell enough consoles to keep up with sales of Halo 3 in the 1st place. Right now Halo 3 pre orders alone out number the PS3's entire global instalment.

I'd say just hold off another month or so for the Halo hype to die down. If they can wait until November or December, this could possibly hlep sell more system for the holiday season. If Killzone has a strong showing at E3 and builds up "real" hype with proof of the games visuals and play, it could help sell more systems for the holiday. If MGS:4 is postponed until next year, this could have people adopt the system early, with other software lineups planned for the fall such as Haze, GTA 4, etc. We will find out soon I suppose as to when it will be released at E3.

While many say its impossible to counter Halo3's sales, I think GTA4 can do that. And GTA:Vice City sold much more than Halo2. And whats wrong with Sony releasing KZ2 along with Halo3? Halo3 is exclusive for 360 and KZ2 is exclusive for PS3. 360 owners get Halo and PS3 owners get KZ2 and if someone owns both systems, they are rich enough to buy both KZ and Halo3. Sony released Resistance near Gears release and they both did well enough. This time both titles are much bigger, Killzone PS3 and Halo3. Also do not underestimate the GTA4 effect, +UT3 and Haze.

Sony and Guerilla games arent stupid they wouldnt invest 22 million dollars on something that they wouldnt know first hand that could deliver that type of graphics or better, and as a matter o fact what game currently out on ps3 cost 22 million or close? I have a short answer none not even close, so how can you say the graphics arent possible if this amount of money has never been invested in the machine, and on the subject of movies, movies particularly the ones such as the new ones like Transformers, and Surfs up, also even older ones like The Day After Tommorrow, they had to utilize supercomputers to render that type of graphics, but the thing is it cost a ton of money to get that type of render in order, but dont you believe it would be even more money, take more time, and a ton of people to make that on a gaming machine with a supercomputer that they are not truely familiar with working with, and also you say that killzone 2 cant look like that on ps3 because motorstorm, and resistance didnt get to their target renders, but the only problem is that isnt the cenario for killzone 2, first off there is a much much higher budget for killzone 2 than for those 2 games, and this killzone isnt rushed like those 2 games, and the workforce for killzone 2 has much higher numbers than for motorstorm and resistance did, the only reason both those games didnt live up to the trailer as you say are those reasons and more, motorstorm only used 10-15% of 2 of the 9 processors on cell, but the funny thing is about how many say that the rsx is weak, well the graphics for motorstorm were all rendered by rsx, that usage of cell was used for physics, dynamics, frame rate, a.i., and the damage to the cars, but then again the damage may have been done by rsx as well, now keep in mind that the graphics in motorstorm while not as good as the trailer, they were incredible and showed things that have never been seen in games before, many things that happened in game in motorstorm usually happen in cutscenes anyway, the funny thing is that there were no EDGE tools at the time of release or developement of the game, the RSX was not near being maxed out, many of the fake tech specialist are forgeting that the RSX has a performance of 1.8tflops there are supercomputers that dont have that performance, but some people are to advanced in knowledge that they skip over things like that, but oh well.

And whos to say that some games havent over exceeded their target render in ways, even without the budget to do so, Heavenly Sword, many say that this game has surpassed its target render, and for Formula One this game to me looks better than the target render, also motorstorm while not as good as the target render, there were only about 4 cars in the target render trailer, but in the real game there were what 16,be for real man, and also there was online, and the release date was what 4 months after launch or shorter, and they achieved graphics like that with the so called "weakling, and outdated RSX" that didnt have edge tools usage, man that RSX sure is weak and outdated but its motorstorm graphics didnt come close to maxing it out, and then you have resistance, it didnt quit meet the trailer, but hey the finalized ps3 developement kits werent out til like what August 2006, man either there was some hard work in a fast amount of time or the ps3 just has a very very very very very very very long way to go before ever running into fatigue, in addition i think that the target render for I-8 did look good and yes better than resistanc, but the only thing is i also believe that there were more things happening on screen than in the target render, and maybe even more people, also there was online, when there was no online announced back at e3, that is alotta work, to much to really focus on graphics, if they had that same work timeframe, but forgot doing all those extra things and just had online the graphics surely wouldve exceeded the trailer, and by the way this game used the same amount of power that motorstorm did, and another fact that many people dont seem to realize when they say that gears of war looks better than resistance, think for one minute gears of war was in developement for what well before e3 2005, because there was a mighty nice looking playable version of it at e3 2005, and also the game was slated for release at 360 or in sonys case 180's launch window, but some kinda way the game got pushed back til what ps3's launch window, wow that is a lot of time and lets me further know that that game maxed out the 180, many of you say that aww the 180 is getting unreal tournament 3 and that will look better than gears of war, but even if what will be the sacrifice that will be made to make the graphics better than that for the 180, i can assure you that you will not be seeing that nifty blood affect that is the only thing that is the little mini graphics edge that people can put over a ps3 game, but i have several reasons why this gears of war maxed out the 180:

but as i have said some things cannot get through thick 180 fans skulls, but many of you say that sony lies and has lied, this gen sony truely hasnt lied, especially since its been 7 months, and the graphics display is already amazing and 2nd to none, but i have 9 valid resons that sony wouldnt lie:

1. To much at stake this time, sony is banking the success of their company on the success of the ps3, i would highly doubt that they would lie this time around the ps3 has a sorta slow start, it will catch up and in a bigger way than you think when developers exploit some of ps3s real power, but a lie from sony this time from sony could result in instant loss.

2. WAY to much money invested into the ps3. Sony has invested over 40 billion dollars on the ps3 alone, and now will invest another couple billion on rumble back in the controller would you invest that much money on a lie. Microsoft hasnt invested anywhere near this much money on the 180 to this day, infact they are taking your money live still cost money; on the second weakbox. Lesson from sony (greed gets you no where)

3. WAY to much developer money invested into the ps3 Guerilla Games for example 22 million in the first year of the ps3, Final Fantasy ??,???,??? then Eight Days ??,???,??? then Metal Gear ??,???,??? then Drakes Fortune ??,???,???. Point being they must no much more about what the machine is capable of to invest this much money into the ps3 in the baby years of the ps3.

4. To much industry money invested into the ps3 IBM the cell processor the next generation of their supercomputer on a chip all betting on the ps3, Toshiba also with there blue ray player although it is a joint developement with sony and toshiba still way too much money.

5. TOO much prooven in the baby infant days and months of the ps3 with games and tech demos showing never before seen things that usually happen in a cutscene and only in the first 6 months come on man give it up already.

6. If sony is lying then IBM, NVIDIA, TOSHIBA, and SONY are all lying so that is too much lying and could put all these industries in a dilema of their former market dominace and position.

7. To much trash talk last generation. Remember last generation in every magazine the original weakbox had a better graphic rating than the ps2, sony wasnt going to have it this time they decided we aint just gonna dominate with games this time, every area will be consumed by us.

8. The planning and preparation of the ps3. Sony along with IBM, TOSHIBA, and NVIDIA planned ps3 in a timeframe in which ps2 was still in its prime and that was about 7 years and some change ago now keep in mind this was not the planning that was done for the ps2 that was hardly any time and they didnt know what to expect from weakbox 1 this time they were prepared for not only the next weakbox but pcs to, keep in mind that the majority of these hardware desighners are japanese and japanese are arguably the smartest people on earth and i know that because everything in their city's are more advanced than ours, they have also come up with a supercomputer on a chip something microsoft will never do now planning for that long by geniouses the results are not pretty.

Dear God sunshine, how long did it take for you to type that? Or do you have them pre typed and you just cut and paste?

For the love of god and everthing that is good and right in this world will the fanboys pull the bug out thier ar$es and accept the fact that there are 3 manufacturers and that they all will be around for a long, long time. I do not in anyway want a particular manufacturere to dominate - what you end up with is a stagnant market, with little or no innovation at all.

Halo 3 is gonna sell a metric fu@kload and with the exception of GTA and pokemon, no other game will come close. IMO, halo is an alright game - not great, just good. BUt it still sells, it captured the market in ways very few games do.

IMO, Killzone did not. But there are loads of other games that are more than worth the proce of the PS3's admission. remember it has only been out for 6 months - hell I could'nt get my 360 until 8 odd months after release as there was little or no supply and as far as I remember, there were not that many fantastic games out at that time.

Give the PS3 time and it will do fine, the 360 will do fine and the Wii, all things considered will do fine too.

There is more than enough room in the market for 3 consoles.

BTW, no manufacturer has dominated the market three times in succesion.......

The cell processor sucks for gaming
It's not an especially good general-purpose CPU. Effectively it's a single core (with SMT) in-order PPE CPU with a bunch of FP units hanging off the side. For single-precision FP apps, it's a monster; but general-purpose computing is integer-oriented and tends to be very branchy, which in-order designs suck at. So even though Linux has been ported to it, it's a lousy choice for a desktop processor. HPC applications are something else entirely, which is why you see the interest for folding and supercomputer clusters.

And it can't compete with x86 unless MS ports Windows to it, and they won't (because it sucks as a gp CPU).

This is really no different from the Sun T1/T2 (Niagara), which is a impressive at massively-threaded network-oriented loads but would suck as a desktop processor.

The Cell I believe, is over-rated. Most of the processors that IBM releases are targeted towards the Server end of the market and not for the general consumer. Now i have gone round reading many artices about which one is better PS3 or the 360 ,i am just clearing things up, which many people seem to get wrong.

i own a ps2 and a PC and to be honest i was sort of a playstation fanboy.But after reading many sites about the PS3's showing at E3 and researching on the differences between the two, i was disappointed. ME being a PC enthusiast iv tried to compare the 2 consoles.

1)Now say you were building a PC and it was the best PC around. You had the best parts CPU ,Motherboard,ect...Exept one thing ram, you have a measily 256mb of ram,now will that cope with your super computer?No.Its the same problem as te PS3 compared to the xbox 360 it only has 48.2gb/s while the xbox 360 has 278.4b/s which means it can process more data quicker than the PS3 therefore better graphics.

2)Not to mention the custom ATI graphics with 24 pixel pipelines in the 360 is far better than the RSX has 12 pixel pipelines in the PS3 which only just beats the 7800gtx(ive heard),and yes even though the RSX has 50mhs clockspeed more than the 360 it wont make a difference.Plus a graphics card better than the RSX, nvidia said will be available shortly after the PS3 launches so you could have better graphics than a PS3 but for your PC! So much for 'new technology'.

3)Now to move on the CPU, the Cell has only one PPE to the IBM's Xenon's three, which means that developers will have to cram all their game control, AI, and physics code into at most two threads that are sharing a very narrow execution core with no instruction window.Not forgeting that the cell processor was only produced for multimedia, not gaming. While the xenon CPU was made for specificaly gaming.

4)As i said me reding all these articles people always seem to talk about how many teraflops the ps3 produces and how much the 360 produceswhich if read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... doesn't actually make much of a difference in the real world.

5)Price,need i say more the PS3 will incorprate a blue ray player but to be honest, that wont really make a difference except that it will have more storage,which realy sony only put in blue ray so it would gain a better chance of winning the next gen disks war (hd- dvd and blue ray disks) and just bumps up the price by another $200.

overall, both consoles are high quality gaming machines for HD gaming, but if you crunch up the numbers xbox 360 even though released before the PS3, is technically better than PS3. We all heard the talk, that the Cell processor would wipe away all before it. Of course anyone with any knowledge of this kind of technology would see it for what it is, more Sony bullshit. Remember the PS2?

1000 times the power of any PC. 66Gb/s of memory bandwidth. Toy Story graphics in real time. And such & such.

The same kind of outrageous claims were made with this Cell processor which is developed by IBM, Toshiba, and Sony. They claim this to be completely "revolutionary". It's not, you can clearly see it's relation to the Playstation 2's processor. In that it's basically lots of weak processors bolted together, the fundamental reason the Playstation 2 is so insanely difficult to develop for and why developers are dropping it and shifting focus to the Microsoft Xbox 360. Which like all Microsoft platforms is notoriously fast and simple to develop for. Allowing developers to spend more time creating decent games instead of struggling to try and get their software to even work.

Just days ago the official press release about this Cell thing was released. The Sony fanboys started cheering, I guess they just never learn do they - and what should happen just yesterday? nVidia released a statement saying their graphics processors would feature in the Playstation 3 and other Sony products.

What happened to the mighty Cell? Sony now have to back-off saying the Cell is not all mighty, and require a seperate GPU to handle graphics, yes it's 1000 times more powerful then any PC today, right that's why it can't perform GPU-like operations on it. They need a PC manufacturer to remotely stand a chance of coming up with a better graphics processor then their extremely lacking PS2. The hypocracy! Just a few years ago they were blasting the Xbox because of it using PC hardware, it featured an nVidia NV2A chip (which at the time they seemed to think was a bad thing). Of course nVidia have since been replaced by ATi, as the performance/quality graphics leader of the PC market, ATi winning the contract to develop the GPU for the Xbox 2, which they have now completed.

Sony are still lagging behind. Good luck with your Playstation 3, you're going to need it.

It was just another mediocre game that nobody really cared about and never hit the mainstream market like Halo. Just another proverbial roadkill underneath Halo's wheels. People went crazy over Motorstorm's trailer too, but did that turn out to be a GOW killer? No.

Halo didn't sell as incredibly as it did because it was overhyped crap. It sold because it was an excellent game, which finally brought console fps's into their own with a fun, replayable online multiplayer experience. People look at the Killzone trailer and say, "OMFG THAT LOOKED AWESOME!!!" but do you know of any improvements or interesting features about it? DO we really know anything at all about the game other than the admittedly CGI footage? Nothing substantial. Come E3, they may release a ton of info about it, and if they do I may change my opinion. But for right now I don't see any reason to get too excited.

Man I keep hearing you say that since the ps3 is a "Supercomputer" all games on it are by default better than games on the 360. You, my friend, are dead wrong. Games are about substance, not flash. If I wanted to see incredible graphic design or "real" looking computer images I'd go to the movies. If you value visuals over gameplay then you are a sad excuse for a gamer my friend.

the "majority" you speak of are just those who play console fps. the VAST majority of fps players play on PC, where halo can't hold a candle to the better fps out there. for a console game, it was stellar, because it was a blast to play with friends, but as a game compared to the full spectrum of games on every platform, it is mediocre.

and people who've seen the GDC demo say that the game has surpassed the target render in some aspects (but lags behind in others.) but also remember that the GDC trailer was a sample of what playstation EDGE could do. otherwise, it was just a sample of the dev tools sony's release. I quite liked Killzone although it was ropey - nice atmosphere.

If they were to get any way near the quality of the e3 trailer then it's not just graphics but also joining animations and interaction that they will need to concentrate on.That level of programming isn't really being explored currently and it probably wont in the next generation of hardware either.

As for Halo3 ,nothing could counter Halo3 frankly.Also comparing Half life2 to Halo is a bit pointless as both are distinctly different wonderfull games - why compare them.Killzone2 may turn out to be a nice alternative but they do have a lot of work if they are to match the combat mechanics of Halo - still the king in this regard and that isn't simply an opinion.

Regardless of how good KZ2 is, it cannot compete sales wise with Halo 3. Unless Sony closes the gap TREMENDOUSLY in the next few months, there is simply no way it will outsell Halo. The sheer difference in console numbers will not allow it.

Halo3 may sell, but from what I have seen on the beta is SO overated. Many people are already disappointed by its grahpic and gameplay. It is still a good game but well again, it's just overated.

Killzone3, on the other hand, may prevail if it lives up to the expectation and grahpic. The trailer is cgi, but the gameplay grahpic is said to be very close to cgi quality by the media.

I dunno, it looks like a cg control panel overlay to actual footage of a train - so where is the revelation on graphics in that? I mean, the controls look nice and all, but all it is is video fooking playback!

And besides, it is a train driving simulation!!!!! Not exactly the most entertaining or exciting of the sims out there - you don't even get to steer!

The game did sell well and even in spite of some glaring and problematic flaws and glitches, didn't it still garner reviews that averaged over 70%?

I really hate using reviews to back up points...but just to help emphasize what I'm trying to say...(I really didn't think the game was too bad myself, though)

I'll go out on a limb here and just say that there was definitely some potential for a stellar game in the first release, it's just that some very obvious things were holding it back. I personally would give a mediocre game a 5 or 6...and being the type of person that absolutely HATES glitches, a glitchy game that warrants a 7 has to have something to it.

All I'm saying is, let's not jump down Guerrilla's throats too hard, because they do seem to be a capable dev house(especially after seeing what they did with Liberation), and I think they just needed more experience.

Keep in mind that KZ was originally intended for the PC, and they coded that entire game on PS2 with absolutely no prior experience with the machine. I think what they did wasn't too shabby for a first go at it. They're more experienced(not to mention the deeper pockets this time around), so based on these few factors I'm expecting a pretty good shooter this time around.

Realistically though, I don't think the final product will measure up to the trailer, but I am thinking it may get pretty damn close, and if what I see at E3 impresses me(again, which doesn't necessarily mean blowing away the trailer, although that would be nice...), then I'm sold. All I can ask though, is that include a jump button this time, I can't stand shooters without jumping for some reason, with the exception of Timesplitters.

Sony can't counter Halo period. They have no weapons that even compare to the power that Halo has. It might sound like a fanboy comment, but it's not.
