Videogamer: Uncharted 2 Review

Videogamer writes:

"Uncharted 2 does so many things right, that its problems (a less than perfect cover system, some frustrating combat and unfortunate glitches) are easy to overlook. The single-player adventure packs in so many incredible moments that you'll be talking about it with friends for months, the multiplayer functionality is superb and rammed with content, and the whole game looks beyond anything you'll have seen before. Uncharted didn't quite make the grade as a classic, but Uncharted 2 should earn the series a place among the very best exclusives to hit the PlayStation."

Good score.Check out the demo guys. Its very good

gaffyh5316d ago

Is it up on the EU store or only US?

SuperM5316d ago

I kid. Excellent score for a more then excellent game

callahan095316d ago

Same score as ODST. Quite frankly, that's BS. Uncharted 2 deserves better.

SoapShoes5316d ago

More like ODST deserves worse...

callahan095316d ago (Edited 5316d ago )

How about these quotes from the review:

"This is the very definition of a triple-A must own title."

"Glorious set-pieces and production values that rival the best the system has to offer."

"At times it's hard not to just stop and stare at what's in front of you, marveling at the detail packed into every scene."

"Across the board Uncharted 2 screams quality."

"The single-player adventure packs in so many incredible moments that you'll be talking about it with friends for months, the multiplayer functionality is superb and rammed with content, and the whole game looks beyond anything you'll have seen before."

Sounds like a god damn 10 out of 10 me.

mintaro5316d ago

@1.3

Anything will sound glorious or crappy if you just pick and choose what you read.

KingsofOmega5316d ago (Edited 5316d ago )

Only a 9/10 are you having a fricken giraffe?

They are just trying to pull its meta score down.

Veneno5316d ago

Well I wouldn't call Videogamer.com a no name site, but they do have a vendetta against anything Sony.

Hideo_Kojima5316d ago

@ callahan09

Jesus crist dude remove your fan goggles.
He gave some bad reasons too mate...

"Melee combat doesn't work quite as well"

"It's somewhat of a shame that the end of the game gets a little bogged down by too many snipers and enemies with RPGs"

"a less than perfect cover system, some frustrating combat and unfortunate glitches"

Allthough it is nit picking to my eyes you can't say that in this review they gave it a score that didn't reflect what the wrote.

SuperM5316d ago

common guys. i can understand people complaining simply because almost every fricking game released these days are overrated. but a 9/10 is supposed to be really really good.

Instead of people whining about a game not getting 10/10 id rather hear some complaining about reviewers generally giving games way to high score so that when a game that truly stands out comes out it wont either have to be a 10/10 or just as bad as every other game.

In my opinion 10/10 should be reserved for the very very few really stand out games. Now Uncharted 2 might actually be that but hard to say before ive played it. But great games shouldnt get more then an 8/10. To get a 9/10 it would have to excell, and as ive said for a 10/10 it must be something truly special.

DMason5316d ago

You guys are really debating a 9/10 review? Wow, since when is a 9/10 not a good score? Here's the facts: YOU havent played it yet. So in all honesty, YOU can't judge the game.

What kind of world are we living in where people can't accept a near perfect review. I can't imagine seeing what people will do if this game gets a 7/10 somewhere.

rucky5316d ago (Edited 5316d ago )

10/10? You mean like the perfect score given to the buggy GeOW2 by the same site and same reviewer.

callahan095316d ago (Edited 5316d ago )

@ Guntrol:

Don't give me that "fan goggles" bull crap. You know as well as I do that every game ever made has flaws. This game is no exception. The point is, when you go and say things like:

"This is the very definition of a triple-A must own title"

And you specify the sheer longevity, quality, and value of the product by saying:

"The single-player adventure packs in so many incredible moments that you'll be talking about it with friends for months, the multiplayer functionality is superb and rammed with content, and the whole game looks beyond anything you'll have seen before."

Well, I think that means this game deserves the highest accolades. If this guy could ignore the serious faults in Gears of War 2 at that product's launch, and give that game a perfect 10, then there is absolutely no reason that Uncharted 2 shouldn't get a perfect 10. Gears 2 when it launched? The online was completely unplayable, the game still had the same glitches as the original, and you want to talk about a botched ending, oh man, talk about an anti-climactic, worthless final level and boss fight.

Ju5316d ago

I throw in my 2 cents here, too. 9/10/10 essential 9. Wondering. Not an average, I hear again.

Immortal Kaim5316d ago

A 9/10... 9/10.... You guys are farkin complaining about a 9/10...Jesus Christ I actually think some of you guys have mental problems. Absolutely pathetic.

ODST:9,8,9 Overall=9
U2:9,10,10 Overall=9????
U2 >>>>> ODST and yet U2 gets the same score as ODST
I really don't get these reviewers sometimes.

sajj3165316d ago

Don't want to play with flames ... but the math just doesn't make sense to me.

Microsoft Xbox 3605316d ago

That's what I call biased in my book. They seem to be more forgiving to 360 exclusives.

Simon_Brezhnev5316d ago

most gaming sites are forgivable to 360 exclusives

joydestroy5316d ago

yah, should've been a 9.5 at least

nycredude5316d ago

Yeah it seems like the media has been a bit more lenient with 360 exclusive and more harsh on Ps3 exclusives but IMO that is a good thing.

If you're judging a "pro" and an "amateur" on their performance naturally you will hold the "pro" to a higher standards thant he "amateur". This is probably a bad analogy but the Sony first party developers are really starting to make the other developers look like amateurs man. I mean Naughty Dog cooked this up in 2 years!!!!

Also if all Sony developers know that they are held to such high standards they will continue working harder to bring us all awesome games!!! All the media judge Ps3 exclusive harder cause they know they are capable of producing.

Christopher5316d ago

"Scores are out of 10. Overall score is not an average of the sub-scores."

I disagree with this being equal to Halo ODST as well, but 9/10 is a great score.

bjornbear5316d ago

9 + 10 + 10 = 29 / 3 = 9.66666667 which rounds off to 10...so yeah...

9 + 8 + 9 = 26 / 3 = 8.66666667 which also rounds off to a 9...

ODST = U2?...yeah sure ok fine what ever...*turns back to play another round of uncharted 2 beta MP*

This is an outrage, BLASPHEMY!!! :P :D

dreamcast5316d ago

RAWR! This is unacceptable!

Picnic5316d ago

The only thing that I'm concerned with with the Uncharted series is that Naughty Dog don't seem to want to increase the number of puzzles. It seems like from Resident Evil 4 onwards, extensive puzzle sections have gone out of fashion with games designers. I can understand that they may have done this to keep the action flowing in the style of a Hollywood adventure but I think that puzzles will help replayability.

nycredude5316d ago

Dude, I am not bashing but you probably haven't played the first Uncharted. Most people I know of who owns Uc1 have played it multiple times cause the game is flat out fun and never gets old.

Now the new one has coop and mp and cinema mode, not to mention "the best single player game Adam Sessler has every play!", and you complain about the puzzles?

Come on now!?

Christopher5316d ago

Puzzles are only a portion of the gameplay, not the whole game. Naughty Dog said you'd spend the same proportion of time doing puzzles in Uncharted 2 as you did in Uncharted.

Currently playing Drakes Fortune on crushing, next will be to replay Among Thieves, but I'm sure it still holds up today.

P_Bomb1448d ago (Edited 1448d ago )

Recently re-platinumed 1-3. Uncharted 2 aged better than I even expected. I enjoyed it more now than I did a decade ago. It’s more polished than 1, tighter than 3 and Yemen in 3 was gorgeous. Shambhala out-prettied Ubar though. 60fps w higher res’ made for a damn good rerun.

Abnor_Mal1447d ago

Question: When you say Uncharted2 aged better than expected, are you talking about the original PS3 game or the remastered collection on PS4. I ask because I think that a remastered version of the game would look and play better than the original.

I doubt that the original ran at 60 frames, how many years old is the remastered collection anyway.

I need to replay the original trilogy along with the collection, not a fan of the collection trophy of beating levels in a set time and don't think the originals required that for platinum.

P_Bomb1447d ago (Edited 1447d ago )

@abnor_mal
It’s true that the remasters have upped the resolution and given it 60fps, but the base game is the same. The art design and base textures/physics/ animations are the same yet still look contemporary. More-so than UC1 which isn’t as tight, or UC3 in some cases which I found a bit clunky in close quarters.

UC2 level design was a great evolution in bringing the verticality from the jungle into rural/urban settings while maintaining smooth animation transitions. Drake still moves better than the ginger in Star Wars Jedi. Outdoor areas are better lit.

UC2 also has more action and better pacing imo, which helps when replaying a game 10 years later. Kept me engaged.

You don’t need to time trial for platinum. They stuck the speedrun trophies in a seperate extended dlc category so have no fear.

MadLad1448d ago

I thought the originals were good, but not great. I understand that puts me in the minority here. That said, Uncharted 4 was freaking fantastic.

Profchaos1448d ago (Edited 1448d ago )

Yeah I understand the hate for 4 prior to playing it I was firmly against it and felt like 3 wrapped things up already but now after playing it I think it was the best in the franchise.

Now I look back at two and I feel like I'm playing an on the rails shooter everything is so tightly scripted including the infamous train scene you simply can't make a mistake

Rimeskeem1448d ago

I think Uncharted 2 is a lot like AC2. Both games took the idea and basically improved it in every single way.

Movefasta19931447d ago

Uc2, AC2,Halo2, Soul calibur 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2 , Dishonored 2 and a few more. The only negative thing I have against uc2, and imo it annoyed me,are the blue apes, uncharted 1 handled the super natural far better.
