SEGA leaks Sony's plans for PS2 and Dreamcast emulation on PS3

SEGA has let a pretty fat cat out of the bag by releasing confidential notes from a meeting with Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Sony wants to release all PS2 games on the PlayStation 3, according to a meeting between SEGA America and SCEA.

The meeting was held on August 5th, with comments regarding SEGA's PS3 and PSP releases, as well as Sony's plans for the console in the near future.

OMG OMFG! When I saw Vice City my eyes were like those little kids who got the N64 for Christmas that time. I hope they're saying that it will be released on Blu Ray. Hell PSN or Blu Ray, I'm getting it again. The best game ever! I still play it on my PS3 to this date. In fact it's the most played game on my PS3.

I know this is not a Sega game, but they were discussing all titles for PS2, So I really want to play SotC. I saw the game on shelves way back, but did not know it was Ico 2. Ico was an incredible game with incredible graphics and incredible art direction. at first I thought they were talking about emulating the dreamcast and ps2 using the disks I already have. That would be insane, but I doubt I will re-buy an DC games as I still have my DC. That would be cool for people who never had a DC or dont have one anymore. The only game id rebuy would be powerstone if you could play it online

Now where talking! Sony is finally fighting back! Free online, and now BC with Sega games? Forget only doing PS2 games they are also doing a former competitors games! What's next? PS1 games? How about they do PC games, this way they beat Microsoft to it when Microsoft will do it with the next console.

Watchmen: The End Is Night Complete for PS3 contains the full Watchmen Blu-Ray in addition to parts 1 & 2 of the game. Amazon actually has it right now for like 5 bucks more than the standalone Blu-Ray movie. I never bought the Blu-Ray, but I liked the movie, and the demo of the game was decent enough, so I've been thinking about buying the complete set.

I have an 80gb with emulation-based BC, so any kind of quality update to the PS2 emulator is fantastic news for me. I can play 90% of PS2 games, but I have Black and Jak and Daxter and they both glitch out too much to play with the current emulator. My first Jak and Daxter game is #3 and I have no clue what's going on, I'd love to start from the beginning and not drop $100 on a new PS2 (my last one broke, though it happened to work the one time they tested it for a trade-in at gamestop! mooooaaahahahahahaha)

I've only played GoW2 on my PS3! I also gave my stepson my PS2, so sometimes we play his games on the big screen(scaled 1080p). My nephew also plays PS2 games on my PS3 and once in awhile, I like to blow the dust off a few games and give them a go again(Oni a few times).

But most of all, I want to play some PS2 games I missed last gen that are gone. Nobody trades in the really good games. Although I hated it the first time I played it, MGS4 has made me more open to MGS3 and I never finished it(my chip stopped functioning for bootlegs).

"Wanting PS2 games on PS3" does not necessarily mean a binary emulation. The GoW collection was remastered, but they didn't touch the code. What that means is, that basically the PS2 SDK compiles to a PS3 target, as such all the PS2 framework must have been ported to the PS3. Not sure what that allows people to do, but basically, if this includes all of the PS2 compilers (they had to go through Sony at some point regardless of programming language), it could mean porting PS2 titles is now easier. Or, its possible to even patch binary titles to run on the PS3 (kind of a binary compiler), but not necessarily run the original PS2 titles there.

Either way, some basic PS2 support is either already in the PS3 firmware or in its SDK. Its still a rumor.

BTW: I saw the hilarious Sony "Rumor Monger" add yesterday. The guy reading internet news talking to the Sony guy telling him that the "internet" reports the $299 while the Sony guy walks through $299 signs denying it :) I LOLed.

Sorry, they *did* touch the code for GOW/GOWII to "remaster" them. Probably not in most areas, but you can't just recompile and move from 480p to 720p.

I suspect they've got an emulator that'll handle 80%+ of PS2 code, but there are corner cases and such that don't work well on the PS3, and they recode the game to avoid those problem areas.

They touched the code in minor areas, but if you read the interview (where someone here can provide a link to, I'm sure), they specifically mentioned not to have changed a lot (or nothing, actually). You open up a whole new can of worms if you try to "untie" a QA approved code (which both GoW games certainly are).

If you do it right an set the viewport to a different size, and the code has been designed right in the first place, that's all you gotta do (and maybe a little adjustment here and there). They have also added trophies, so, I know they did touch the code. But basically it was written in C. No bugs nor any functional code has been rewritten. I'd say 95% (or more) of that code ran straight through the compiler. Doesn't really matter.

To do that, you either have 0 dependencies to PS2 specific libraries, or those have been ported/integrated into the PS3 SDK (I think about the later). You never have 0 dependencies.

It's most likely to be true. You know all those firmware updates that do "nothing"? They're most likely improvements to the emulation that some users are testing (non disclosure).

I did ask at one point that if they were doing this why hadn't they just released incomplete emulation to the end user and it was pointed out to me that many users would dismiss it as broken rather than work in progress so it's better to release it "when it's done" rather than just in stages.

my buddy asked me thats he's interested in PS3 slim and asked me whats the difference between fat and slim version.

I told him a few things and i also included that PS3 slim will not play PS2.

He said which fat version can? I said 60g but they were discontinued.

I was thinking before I went to bed last night and after reading the article about Yakuza 3 likely headed to the US and with Valkyria Chronicles 2 being on PSP and the hint that Valkyria Chronicles 3 would be coming to PS3 that with all this exclusive support coming from SEGA to the PS3 that wouldn't it be awesome if Dreamcast (and Saturn emulation too hopefully) came to the PS3.

And this is almost direct confirmation of that.

It also leads me to believe that the reason SEGA might want to allow emulation of their games on PS3 is to pave the way for new sequals to classic Dreamcast games like Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia.

Some people say Sega wouldn't have a list of what Dreamcast games they would like to see on PS3 prepared yet. However, it is known that they were renewing copywrites on some of their older games earlier this year.

It is interesting that this news came out this week too the week of TGS and of the release of Halo: ODST.

In a way it says xbox fans you might have Halo, but soon PS3 will have classic games from the two greatest consoles of this decade the Dreamcast and PS2 many of which will also be receiving long awaited sequals exclusive on PS3.

It's cool having all that kit - but I'd rather just download the games off the PSN.

I'm so glad I got a 60Gb launch system. People complained (Which was very high) and Sony's way to help with this was to remove BC. Now, the complaints about BC missing is the biggie. If all the complaining in the beginning were minimized, price drops were coming sooner or later. The BC may still be included to this date if there was not such a backlash. Just leave the PS3s on the shelves, Sony would get the picture eventually. Unless their plan was to resell PS2 games from the beginning??????

The Dreamcast used OpenGL for their games and the PS3 uses OpenGL for their games so emulation would work pretty well I think. Also I have to agree with one of the posters and go nuts over Shenmue coming to the PS3 and being able to play it in 1080P. I love that game and if it came with trophy support......oh man I do not think I could stop playing it for a long time.

The news of full emulation wasn't the only megaton, but also Dreamcast emulation, as well as a japanese import section, which is fully welcomed among the ps3 community who have tastes for titles solely in japan.

I'm one of the people who, when I joined the next-gen, got rid of my PS2.
There are plenty of titles that I would love to play, that I never got a chance to, like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, etc.

I'm a Sony guy through-and-through, but if this leak is to be believed at FACE VALUE, this is a crappy move on Sony's part.

If Sony releases PS2 games to the PSN store, then they've shown that they've found a way to allow PS2 games to play on the PS3. THEREFORE, if this potential announcement doesn't ALSO include the fact that the PS3 is now fully BC again, Sony is spitting in all of our faces.

Look, I already have a BC PS3, so I don't care all that much on a personal level. But I'll lose a LOT of respect for Sony if they make games available for download without also allowing disc-based games to play. It just makes no sense.

Perhaps Sony would lose SOME money with this, but how many people are REALLY going to rebuy a game that's sitting on their damn shelf from the PSN store just because the disc isn't allowed to work? That makes no sense.

Even as a PS2 game-owning, BC PS3 owning gamer, there are STILL games I would buy over the PSN store just because I don't/never did own them.
