What's funny about this "PS3 article" is they claim FPS shooters are better on the PS3, yet the PS3 only has 3 FPS, Rfom, fear, cod3. Of those 3 games, only 1 is exclusive to the PS3 (and ONLY because its made by SONY) and the other 2 got better scores on the 360. If EA did indeed make that comment, I wouldn't look up to them for anything innovating or exclusive. In fact they are the very last developer, I would look to. OK, we all agreed (one way or another) that Cell is superior to Xenon. Why the hell PS3 fans keep coming back to that subject? I think because PS3 hasn't give any reason (so far) to justify it's high price. There's just promises, analyses, "Cell's power is limitless, we need it..."...

Now, point me one game that could put XBOX 360 games to shame in terms of graphics, story, controls, whatever... Don't say "just you wait 'till november, or 2008.", but show me one game that's really striking out. If you can't show me any game, then you can't convince me to pay almost 700 euros (PS3 + one game) for a system which is no better than the one I can get for 450 euros (XBOX 360 + one game). For now, there are absolutely no reason for spending 250 euros more (for 250 euros, I can buy Wii ;) ). Maybe in a year or two (when we see some major price drops and/or a MAJOR quality difference between X360 and PS3).

Alright dude there is no doubt that the Cell and the RSX are powerful
But anyone that knows about computers can tell you that the RSX is based on an NVIDIA 7800 card which means......Yep you got it its about 2 to 4 years old so there is nothing awesome about that and much of the Pixels the PS3 can push is thanks to the Cell. And the 360s GPU codenamed XENOS is something new and revolutionary at the time of Launch, I mean it has 48 unified shader piplelines, 10mb Edram which by the way takes care of FSAA and HDR on the fly. The RSX has only 24 piplelines and something that has been proven before is that the RSX cant handle FSAA and HDR at the sametime without getting unstable. When it comes to processors the CELL is a tad bit better when it comes to performance.

So you just validated that the Cell is more powerful, even with the "old" RSX chip, once its coupled with the Cell it is pretty powerful. Then I cannot come out and tell all "XB fanbots" how good the PS3 is. It would have been kind of fun though. I still feel the PS3/Cell has an advantage when it comes to number of things going on per frame. Since Blu-Ray is there with a HDD, the more possibilities there is for a game dev. Nothing special coming that's using it, besides of R:FoM, HS and Lair if I am correct. But there will be more of the same. A good selling argument if anything.

I said it before, and I'm saying it again - Cell is more powerful than Xenon, but not THAT powerful as Sony would like you to believe. 95% of things devs do on Cell can be done on Xenon (if programed correctly). Xenon IS very powerful too - for Christ's sake, it's a Tripple-core, dual threaded CPU where each core is running at 3.2Ghz! How can anyone believe that Cell is absolutely dominant, and that Xenon can't comprare is beyond me...

And again, why another "Cell is more powerful" subject/comments? We all know that. It's not about hardware people! Devs won't just give up X360 'cause PS3 is 20% stronger. Wake up! PS3 has yet to catch on X360...

@JCDenton: I learn as I go. What is it with 3x2 threads working in serial, compared to parallel x7 SPU's and a general PPC CPU all working in 3,2GHz? Each SPU can work singlehandedly or in parallell with several others. Devs talk is their experience with the PS3 hardware. What they say about the PS3 I do believe is holding some truth, but when they downplay the other console is just for selling and PR, right?

Dead rising uses havok physics and the zombies all have there own animation routines quirks and ragdoll physics and all cast shadows along with other objects although I don't know what shadows have to do with the cpu as they are generally done on the gpu

And if PS3 is really 20% more powerful than X360, do you really think that majority of gamers will be able do tell the difference between the same game running on the X360 and PS3? Just like in last-gen wars: Dead Or Alive 2 on the PS2 was slightly better looking in terms of lighting FX, but Dreamcast had less "jagged edges" (it had better anti-aliasing implementation)...

power does not have that much to do with developement. I do not own a ps3 yet. price and game line up is not worth it to me yet. I like to buy 2 to 3 games a month, not even the 360 can do that for me yet(eeven though I have one). In the end its all about the games. Those little SPU's does not have cache memory and branch predictors, and have different instruction set then PPU. PPU acts more like a controller (for SPUs), than real CPU. So Cell is not an easy-to-develop platform, but it's indeed powerful thing. But to say it can blow away Xenon is ridiculaos.

SPU's have their own memory though (128K?). And the cell has programmable cache, not a dictator cache telling what to do instead of devs (as I've heard it on a thread by a ebonyseraphim in ps3forums). :)

Each SPE has 256KB of memory, and they're dual-issue. In fact, Heavenly Sword's AI data never touches system RAM; despite the thousands of characters onscreen at once, the SPE can retain all necessary data. This helps a lot since it frees up even more XDR bandwidth for the other 6 SPEs and PPE.

The Cell puts out about 205gflops for single precision floating point operations. That is insanely fast. Video games use single precision. The reason it is so fast is that each SPE can put out about 25gflops on its own, once assigned a task, it runs automatically, freeing up the main PPE to do other things. The PPE itself is not very powerful, on the cell its used mainly as a controller, however it can be used for general processor functions, like every single ported game from PC or Xbox, which doesnt even touch the SPE's where a huge amount of performance is left untouched. The Xenon is the 360 is not very good at all. Just try to find the specs on it, you can't, cause it sucks, I estimated to be about 1/8 the total power of the cell. IF you dont believe me, look at folding@home, look at LAIR, look at 8 HD streams at once(no other processer today can achieve that, including CORE 2 Xtreme). The processor is a beast, however, you cannot port a game to it, it has to be built from the ground up. What for the next Insomniac game to come out to see how they have learned to utilize the cell. if you dont believe me, check out wiki, dont believe wiki, check anadtech, or do your own research. Cell is a beast, it is here to stay. Ask MS about the Xenon, and guess what, no specs released, I wonder why.....

No, you're wrong, mate. PS2 was inerior to Xbox in every way (and yet was more successful).

PS2 CPU is running at ~300MHz; XBOX CPU is running at 733MHz.

PS2 has 24MB of RAM; XBOX has 64MB of RAM.

PS2 has 4MB frame-buffer (video) memory (+GPU was far inferior then XBOX, and even the Dreamcast GPU); XBOX GPU was a modified geforce 3 GPU (with programable pixel/vertex shaders).

PS2 doesn't have a HDD; XBOX has 8GB HDD.

I bought it for Xbox as soon as they made it BC for 360 because I was so impressed after playing it on my friend's PS2. I think it was easily one of the best last gen shooters. The reason I'M excited about another Black is because, even though is did NOT have a great story line, it was one of (if not the) best looking shooters on the PS2. The gameplay just rocked. And to have completely destructable environments like that, on the PS2, was great.

MOH has gone downhill lately- Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms are MUCH better games. So, not really a boost in my opinion. Besides, it is a KNOWN FACT that most multi-platform games in develpment right now are being developed on 360, then ported to PS3. Simple reason for that, really-- developers have had 360 dev kits longer, and Microsoft provides better tools. Some games, (like Burnout 5) that will be on both systems ARE being developed on PS3 first, but in either case, multi-platform games will look the same on the PS3 and the 360, no matter what system they were developed for first. I know the article IMPLIES that EA plans on making only certain games for certain systems, but these days in the industry, the only sure way to make money and to maximize the return on development costs is to port your game to at least one other system. So even if the PS3 user base eventually exceeds the 360's, most games will STILL be on both systems and virtually identical. Finally, anyone want to comment on the fact that all screenshots and videos of Grand Theft Auto 4 shown to date are from the 360 version? Wonder why that is.

You have to harness that power because if you can't, it's just potential. Luckily, Sony has become aware of this and is proactively trying to create and tweak their dev tools. Xbox already has great tools, so in that department, they are doing great. Nonetheless, of course developers will play to each console’s strengths. Look the Cell is powerful. And for games like MOH COD and BF to last in this generation they need the CELL. I mean look at Lair the cell allows for control of each individual entity on the screen with its own AI. That is insane....

Need the cell? They don't need the cell they're just specializing in the cell for graphic hardware. EA really doens't NEED anything from any of the console's.

cell processor is about power and gameplay, allowing each cell to control something else. the ps3 can make the most destructable game out of the 3 consoles. if they choose to work that hard at making it do that, that is. yeah this is about the 3 consoles strengths, would be gay if they were all the same right?? 360 online play is the best, wii, well um child like games, or easy fun games, ps3, pure power and high quality, well thats wat shud come from the ps3 lol, it hasn't really yet, but those games will be here soon.
