Update: No Mandatory Installation for Uncharted 2

It's the tale of all PlayStation 3 games, the dreaded mandatory installation process. Lately, the mandatory installation has toned down, but every so often we get a major release and we find out it'll require a designated space of our HDD in order to play. Every Capcom title released, thus far, has required 5GB of space for the installation. It looks like we'll have to cope with mandatory installation again with Uncharted 2.

Headlines a little off, ND have yet to confirm if there will be an install or not, let alone what size that maybe.

Still, screw you developers for using a mandatory piece of hardware to yours/our advantage. Next they'll be after using the GPU.

GWAVE5383d ago

Hah! Well said. If an install makes the game look better, then do it. No need to gripe about it.

Fishy Fingers5383d ago (Edited 5383d ago )

I just love to play a game without big load screens as I usually throw myself in and cant pull myself away for several hours (at least) so I like a "seamless" experience.

But, if there is an install I imagine it has something to do with either the MP or the large variety of environments you'll be enjoying this time round. Uncharted had a similar setting though out (apart from maybe the end) but Uncharted 2 is going to have you jumping all over the place. Lots of variety, lots of different textures etc.

BulletToothtony5383d ago (Edited 5383d ago )

mgs4, movies too long, even thou they were amazing.

k2 no co-op even thou is a revolutionary game (still play the crap out of it)

Uncharted awesome game but no multiplayer (bioshock is the exception i guess)

Heavenly sword - awesome game but 7 hours is too short (great experience every TRUE gamer should play)

Now waiting 8 mins to play a game is news.. holy crap.. I've been waiting almost 2 years to play part 2, you idiots really think i mind an extra 8 mins.. you're definitely not gamers.. go hang yourself fanboys!!

Chris3995383d ago (Edited 5383d ago )

I don't want the wear and tear on my drive, nor the heat it pumps out while spinning the disc. You ever felt a disc after it's been running in a 360 for a while? Damn thing is HOT.

I really can't comprehend the griping from either camp about "installs". Has no one here ever played a PC game before? That's what these next gen boxes - 360/ PS3 - are: streamlined PCs.

And is my life really so unimportant and uninteresting that I can't spend 20 minutes AWAY from the television while something installs? Answer: it's not. I can occupy myself for a bit while my game does what needs to be done. That's the problem with these recent generations, ADD extreme.

Edit: The article is still utterly speculative. Even if it does have an install, it may do so while the game is running, i.e. Oblivion. That sucker clocked in at over 5 gigs, and you'd never know till you exited the game and looked at the data file. And again, "installs" in general, who really cares?

Johnny Rotten5382d ago

"On the boxart, you’ll find a mandatory installation size of 1.7GB. Thankfully, that is incorrect. Naughty Dog has confessed that was a typo. Sadly, they can’t give an exact size of installation, either. There’s a chance the game will not have any mandatory installation, but as of now it’s unclear if that’ll happen".

PixlSheX5382d ago

Mandatory install of not, reviewers will complain about it.

Traveler5382d ago

The install doesn't bother me. Being able to play through the game without seeing a loading screen is much more important to me. I loved how there were no loading screens in the first one and you could play straight through it seamlessly.

gaffyh5382d ago

Well the first game had no install, so if they need an install it's because the game is trying to do a lot more a lot better, in that case I don't care.

IdleLeeSiuLung5382d ago

I personally like to install the game, it saves wear and tear on the system. However, I detest mandatory installs. I have limited space on my 40GB PS3. Installs should be optional. If you don't want the install put up with the long load times, but don't force them.

However, sometimes this is not possible due to technical requirements of the game, sadly.

Blaze9295382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

so i remember alot of ps3 owners saying developers who force installs are crappy developers who don't know how to work the PS3 and should follow the examples of studios like Guerrilla with Killzone 2 for example who were able to make that amazing game run with no installs.

So does that change now or is Naughty Dog now "crappy developers" who don't know how to work the PS3?

I personally could care less about installs as I just bought myself a 320GB HDD for the PS3...although I should've went for the 500GB. Ah well, I have all the room for installs and if it makes the game better then by all means allow it.

TheTwelve5382d ago

This is an example of h8ers successfully making a problem out of nothing. I'll wait 5-15 minutes if it leads to 60-100 hours of the best gameplay anyone can experience in 2009, thank you very much.

Fox015382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

I don't see the problem with mandatory installs, all PS3s have hard drives anyway.

Headshot815382d ago

because i know its going to be worth the memory!!!
Amd WTF is up with this article, is that guy going to bash pc games for their installs too, pathetic i tell you! PATHETIC!.

siyrobbo5382d ago

i think that the install is more to do with the multiplayer aspect of the game, didnt they say something about being able to change levels on the fly or something? maybe its because of that, as they wouldnt be able to change the data stored on a disc.

OnlyOnN4G5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

Cool, I still have 400 odd GBs of free space on my HDD :)

Applegate5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

Its funny you PS3 fans dont mind 20 min installs like MGS4 but sure cant stand stopping 5 seconds to switch discs on the 360.

I dont understand...

@marceles : LMAO !!

Marceles5382d ago

Can't make a sandwich while switching discs Applegate :)

I don't care either way personally...bring on the game.

agentace5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

oh no that will leave me with only 400gb+ of space and i`ll have to play the game without a single loading screen what a shame, im devastated

gamerdude115382d ago

Believe it or not, this may be an example of shotty gaming journalism. The original Uncharted required 1 gig of HD space, but had no install. This allowed for a seamless experience with very minor loading sequences.

Sadly, this examiner article got my precious web hit, and provided me with little useful information. Any chance everyone will wait for official word from ND?

man0fsteel5382d ago

remember that the first Uncharted had Zero installs. If its true that Uncharted 2 needs an install, people ... as a precaution, please wear your diapers on launch day... ;)

Veneno5382d ago

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o oooomed !!!!

mastiffchild5382d ago

Applegate-the reason I dislike multi disc games for my 360 is that even my new one scraches the the odd one and how annoying would it be to get 80hrs into a game(say FF13) only for that to happen and prevent you finishing?

That said my new Elite ia WAAAY better than any I've had before, it's even a bit quieter, but they have all scratched the odd disc so I usually install what I can these days.

Mu5afir5382d ago

are the people who don't have mandatory HDDs.. *cough* *cough*

Montrealien5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

First of all, I don`t care if there is an install or not, I am now used to it. What I wonder however is what advantages does it give us? We have an official response from Naughty Dog on the matter, There wont be any, however people just above me where defending it before even without knowing for sure if it had a mandatory install or not. I wonder, could I get an official response from you guys concerning the advantages this would gives us? You know, over the consoles that dont have mandatory *cough cough* HDDs? Would it make this game have Zero draw-in? Be in full 1080p? run at a locked 60fps? Will it cook me breakfast when I wake up? clean the dishes?

These are important issues GD!

Either way, the game will be great, and unlike some of the special people here, I don`t see people talking about videogame issues and concerns as talking negative about sony, I just see it as talking, relax.

MTEC85382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

so you don't have to worry about the installs, I bought a 320GB 7200RPM for $50 off ebay a month ago to replace my 60. 20+ PSN games, game installs, music, movies, photos and I am still left with 200+ gigs. UC2 will be epic so if your gonna pass on a game due to installs you mind as well stop gaming.

Veneno5382d ago

It's a trade off. If there's an install on a Ps3 game, it's front page news. Same thing when a 360 game is on multiple discs. No doubt there will be a huge debate when FF13 comes out on 4 or more discs.

iamtehpwn5382d ago

so someone should change this to "Uncharted 2 will have no installation"

iHEARTboobs5382d ago

So all you drama queens that wanted to point fingers and laugh can now stfu. ;)

Traveler5382d ago

Ok, so it turns out to all be a false alarm. Uncharted 2 WILL HAVE NO MANDATORY INSTALLATION.

Veneno5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

There's no reason to live!

FrankenLife5382d ago

What is dreaded about it? my 300GB hdd and a cigarette says, "Whatever, I don't care."

nbsmatambo5382d ago

i dont care if there is 1 or not, the 1st game had no install nd it was amazing...

now if the 2nd game has installs, just think of how awesomely cool, its gonna b

leila015382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

All games have a HDD space required. I don't know what it's all supposed to cover, but it's to make sure you at least have enough space for save games, caching and possibly things too like patches, etc.

Montrealien5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

But people where defending the mandotory install just a few minutes ago, now we won`t take full advantage of the Hdd in every console? Wait a minute here, does this mean the Hdd is being wasted? naw, it wont have a mandatory install, but it will install, piece by piece, which is not a problem anyways since most people here on N4G are cool and have a 5 tera Hdd in their Ps3 right?

*looks at his 60gb launch console and wonders what game he will uninstal this time*

this is why a bought a console right? To avoid all the hassles a PC gave me, oh nm, I am not in 1997 anymore.

gameraxis5382d ago

Most of you will be happy to know that there is not a mandatory install.

stated in ND's twitter by the developers... story has been updated.

Montrealien5382d ago

once again, no mandatory install, but you will need disk space to play, I bet my N4G account on it.

Fishy Fingers5382d ago

Well thats pwned the article then!

TheTwelve5382d ago

Haha...no mandy install. But never fear, PS3 faithful, the h8ers will certainly try to come up with something else.

12

OnlyOnN4G5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

Aah so there will be NO mandatory install as neither did DF, and apparently neither will GoW3 as i recall reading in an interview with the director in which he was rather proud of, either way the games will still be awesome

Montrealien5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

*gets up on chair*

*fixes tie*

There will be no mandatory install! However there will be a need for some disk space as the game will install as you play, I presume like the first Uncharted. There is no victory to be had here kids, and if you think there is, the open zone is one click away. And no, I am no a hater, I just f*ck alot.

iHEARTboobs5382d ago

It's really not that big of a deal Montrealian.

Montrealien5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

what do you mean it aint that big of a deal? N4G is serious business man, people here are for real yo! lol

that and, I am not serious, but here, not matter how crazy it looks, it is serious, as you can see by the people who actually take time to click the dissagree on my retarded comments.

FamilyGuy5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

I could've told ya'll that, if you'd asked me.

The trend has been less and less and smaller (exclusives/1St party) since the beginning of this year. Though it never really bothered me, it was just like a pc thing.

"Every Capcom title released, thus far, has required 5GB of space for the installation"
SFIV was like 4Gbs and is was NOT mandatory.

JonnyBigBoss5382d ago

Installs aren't a problem at all, and I really prefer them. Instant load-times? Yes, please.

5382d ago
Poopface the 2nd5382d ago

its when games like uncharted dont need a install but games like hot shots golf do.

At the end of the day, if theres a game I wanna play, Id have no problem installing or changing disks. Ive done much more annoying things trying to get nes/snes games to play.

ThanatosDMC5382d ago

But teh installz! If there are installs in any game, i wish they'd make it more like how Oblivion did it. Oblivion does a background install while you played the game. I thought that was neat.

Nitrowolf25383d ago (Edited 5383d ago )

doesn't bother me at all. whether it will or not the game will still kick a$$

MattyF5383d ago

I think everyone can agree on that.

Fan Tastic5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

The Fact that they have blessed us with Uncharted which is the best game bar none so far.

Naughty Dawg can require whatever the hell they want for Uncharted 2 and I'll gladly buy it. Bottom line is it is the 1 game that can and MARK MY WORDS will raise the bar even higher than the precedent Uncharted: Drake's Fortune set.

Gue15383d ago

Uncharted had a 200MB mandatory install that take like 2 mins and then no more loadings for the rest of the game. I expect the same for Uncharted 2! =D

Nitrowolf25383d ago

well i would expect more do to the MP.

OnlyOnN4G5382d ago (Edited 5382d ago )

Same with infamous, the install took no more than a minute and rest of the game is loadscreen free

Applegate5382d ago

Oh man I hate lazy devs !!! Look at GG they didn't have an install and KZ2 looked fabulous !

OmarJA5382d ago

What's the matter ? nothing to hype on the other side, eh ?

The_Beast5382d ago

if it takes away loading screens then do it.

I love how all the dumbass xbots make installs sound bad. Most ps3s have big harddrives lol unlike the 3shitty some dont even come with hard drive.. if it was the other way around they would be praising installs like they do to microshit

ShinMaster5382d ago

I don't remember Uncharted having an install at all.

Shane Kim5382d ago

Like ShinGino is saying. Did Uncharted have an install at all? Couse I can't recall.

OnlyOnN4G5382d ago

No, Uncharted did NOT have an install of any form

Kleptic5382d ago

^^yes it did, but it was just a temp cache file...the first time you load up the game and play there is a 1 minute or so load screen, which is something like 250megs being loaded onto the HDD...then no loading for the rest of the time you play...quit the game, and the cache is deleted...load the game up again, and you have the same little load screen for a minute again...

OnlyOnN4G5382d ago

Oh wow, i didn't know that, i thought it was a typical load screen like NDs games on the PS2 and then the rest loaded loadscreen free, thanks for that bit of knowledge

I can't complain if it makes loading times shorter and the game run smoother.

I'd rather do a mandatory install then have my game freeze up.
*cough* fallout 3 *cough*

monkey nuts5382d ago

Street Fighter IV's optional install on the PS3 is only around 2gb. I also have faith that Uncharted 2 will be will be an awesome game install or not. Given Ucharted:DF"s calibre with a 58mb install, I think ND knows what they're doing when it comes to developing for the PS3.

Currently playing Drakes Fortune on crushing, next will be to replay Among Thieves, but I'm sure it still holds up today.

P_Bomb1451d ago (Edited 1451d ago )

Recently re-platinumed 1-3. Uncharted 2 aged better than I even expected. I enjoyed it more now than I did a decade ago. It’s more polished than 1, tighter than 3 and Yemen in 3 was gorgeous. Shambhala out-prettied Ubar though. 60fps w higher res’ made for a damn good rerun.

Abnor_Mal1450d ago

Question: When you say Uncharted2 aged better than expected, are you talking about the original PS3 game or the remastered collection on PS4. I ask because I think that a remastered version of the game would look and play better than the original.

I doubt that the original ran at 60 frames, how many years old is the remastered collection anyway.

I need to replay the original trilogy along with the collection, not a fan of the collection trophy of beating levels in a set time and don't think the originals required that for platinum.

P_Bomb1450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

@abnor_mal
It’s true that the remasters have upped the resolution and given it 60fps, but the base game is the same. The art design and base textures/physics/ animations are the same yet still look contemporary. More-so than UC1 which isn’t as tight, or UC3 in some cases which I found a bit clunky in close quarters.

UC2 level design was a great evolution in bringing the verticality from the jungle into rural/urban settings while maintaining smooth animation transitions. Drake still moves better than the ginger in Star Wars Jedi. Outdoor areas are better lit.

UC2 also has more action and better pacing imo, which helps when replaying a game 10 years later. Kept me engaged.

You don’t need to time trial for platinum. They stuck the speedrun trophies in a seperate extended dlc category so have no fear.

MadLad1451d ago

I thought the originals were good, but not great. I understand that puts me in the minority here. That said, Uncharted 4 was freaking fantastic.

Profchaos1451d ago (Edited 1451d ago )

Yeah I understand the hate for 4 prior to playing it I was firmly against it and felt like 3 wrapped things up already but now after playing it I think it was the best in the franchise.

Now I look back at two and I feel like I'm playing an on the rails shooter everything is so tightly scripted including the infamous train scene you simply can't make a mistake

Rimeskeem1451d ago

I think Uncharted 2 is a lot like AC2. Both games took the idea and basically improved it in every single way.

Movefasta19931450d ago

Uc2, AC2,Halo2, Soul calibur 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2 , Dishonored 2 and a few more. The only negative thing I have against uc2, and imo it annoyed me,are the blue apes, uncharted 1 handled the super natural far better.
