Update: No Mandatory Installation for Uncharted 2

It's the tale of all PlayStation 3 games, the dreaded mandatory installation process. Lately, the mandatory installation has toned down, but every so often we get a major release and we find out it'll require a designated space of our HDD in order to play. Every Capcom title released, thus far, has required 5GB of space for the installation. It looks like we'll have to cope with mandatory installation again with Uncharted 2.

I just love to play a game without big load screens as I usually throw myself in and cant pull myself away for several hours (at least) so I like a "seamless" experience.

But, if there is an install I imagine it has something to do with either the MP or the large variety of environments you'll be enjoying this time round. Uncharted had a similar setting though out (apart from maybe the end) but Uncharted 2 is going to have you jumping all over the place. Lots of variety, lots of different textures etc.

I don't want the wear and tear on my drive, nor the heat it pumps out while spinning the disc. You ever felt a disc after it's been running in a 360 for a while? Damn thing is HOT.

I really can't comprehend the griping from either camp about "installs". Has no one here ever played a PC game before? That's what these next gen boxes - 360/ PS3 - are: streamlined PCs.

And is my life really so unimportant and uninteresting that I can't spend 20 minutes AWAY from the television while something installs? Answer: it's not. I can occupy myself for a bit while my game does what needs to be done. That's the problem with these recent generations, ADD extreme.

Edit: The article is still utterly speculative. Even if it does have an install, it may do so while the game is running, i.e. Oblivion. That sucker clocked in at over 5 gigs, and you'd never know till you exited the game and looked at the data file. And again, "installs" in general, who really cares?

The install doesn't bother me. Being able to play through the game without seeing a loading screen is much more important to me. I loved how there were no loading screens in the first one and you could play straight through it seamlessly.

I personally like to install the game, it saves wear and tear on the system. However, I detest mandatory installs. I have limited space on my 40GB PS3. Installs should be optional. If you don't want the install put up with the long load times, but don't force them.

However, sometimes this is not possible due to technical requirements of the game, sadly.

so i remember alot of ps3 owners saying developers who force installs are crappy developers who don't know how to work the PS3 and should follow the examples of studios like Guerrilla with Killzone 2 for example who were able to make that amazing game run with no installs.

I personally could care less about installs as I just bought myself a 320GB HDD for the PS3...although I should've went for the 500GB. Ah well, I have all the room for installs and if it makes the game better then by all means allow it.

i think that the install is more to do with the multiplayer aspect of the game, didnt they say something about being able to change levels on the fly or something? maybe its because of that, as they wouldnt be able to change the data stored on a disc.

Believe it or not, this may be an example of shotty gaming journalism. The original Uncharted required 1 gig of HD space, but had no install. This allowed for a seamless experience with very minor loading sequences.

Applegate-the reason I dislike multi disc games for my 360 is that even my new one scraches the the odd one and how annoying would it be to get 80hrs into a game(say FF13) only for that to happen and prevent you finishing?

First of all, I don`t care if there is an install or not, I am now used to it. What I wonder however is what advantages does it give us? We have an official response from Naughty Dog on the matter, There wont be any, however people just above me where defending it before even without knowing for sure if it had a mandatory install or not. It's a trade off. If there's an install on a Ps3 game, it's front page news. Same thing when a 360 game is on multiple discs. No doubt there will be a huge debate when FF13 comes out on 4 or more discs.

All games have a HDD space required. I don't know what it's all supposed to cover, but it's to make sure you at least have enough space for save games, caching and possibly things too like patches, etc.

^^yes it did, but it was just a temp cache file...the first time you load up the game and play there is a 1 minute or so load screen, which is something like 250megs being loaded onto the HDD...then no loading for the rest of the time you play...quit the game, and the cache is deleted...load the game up again, and you have the same little load screen for a minute again...

Street Fighter IV's optional install on the PS3 is only around 2gb. I also have faith that Uncharted 2 will be will be an awesome game install or not. Given Ucharted:DF"s calibre with a 58mb install, I think ND knows what they're doing when it comes to developing for the PS3.

Sorry but i think Mass Effect looks better than UC and UC2. I think KZ2 looks better than UC2 and i think RE5 looks better than UC2, and i think GeOW looks better than UC and i think GOW3 looks better than UC2...so since graphics are all subjective excluding the obvious of games that are way below the nice graphics bar, i think UC2 looks great but you are by far placing that game way to high on a pedestal...

Mandatory installs suck but if it helps the game then no big deal, optional installs are far better, and i install all my great games and current games that i am playing onto my 120 HDD. @FFXI101 - I hated Uncharted. The river run while on the Jetski shooting the exploding barrels ruined it for me....the explosions looked terrible and no barrel debri...sorry but uncharted IMO was highly overrated by Sony Fanboys, which is why it never won GOTY in any category...even graphics.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I'm going to have to call crazy if you think Gears looks better than Uncharted. You might argue Gears has better textures eventhough I wouldn't even go that far. In everything else from lighting to poly counts, animations, enemies on-screen, dynamic environments, best water on a console, etc Uncharted clearly looks better. I haven't played Mass Effect so I can't really speak but from clips I've seen the characters are pretty boring with really no facial expression just mouths moving and lighting that is lacking compared to uncharted, I won't even get into the pop-in issue, so I even have to disagree with you there. Sorry you didn't like the jetski part but most everyone else thought it was great especially how they nailed the physics. If something so simple as there being no debris from the barrels ruined the game for you then you have issues.

Drake can run and shoot at the same time; he can hang from ledges and shoot; and he has better melee options when he gets close.

Unfortunately you can't, though it would be far more friendlier to allow external HDDs for mandatory installs if the PS3s fills up and for those who are too afraid of tinkering with internal HDDs in case something went wrong, which i was actually daunted by till i actually replace mine and lo and behold it was a piece of cake and recommend everybody upgrade without fear of damaging anything, its as easy as switching game discs, only it involves a few screws

you are looking for a SATA 2.5"(laptop) you can use SATA 2(3gb/s) but an old SATA 1(1.5Gb/s) will be fine as long as its SATA not PATA. 7200rpm is better than 5400rpm since it has faster seek times but its more expensive so choose one which suits your budget. Dont listen to people who say 7200rpm generates too much heat; they do run warmer but its not an issue for the ps3.

I did for a sec, till i recalled reading about the uncompressed texture tech used in this game, along with killzone 2 and RAGE, which is required to be streamed off the disc, which is why the PC version of RAGE is also on 2 discs as it cant be installed onto the HDD

comparison to DVD's read speeds specially given the Xbox 360's 12x DVD
rating. I am going to attempt to clarify the differences.

The first
difference that should be noted in a DVD vs Blu-ray discussion is that
DVD's are Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Blu-ray is Constant
Linear Velocity (CLV).

CAV: The drives transfer rate is
variable. Information on the inside tracks of the disc is read at
approximately half the speed as the information on the outside of the
disc.

CLV: The drives transfer speed is linear or
constant regardless of whether information is on the inside tracks of
the disc or the outside.

This is important to note because each of DVD's X ratings have a minimum and a maximum read speed and the advertised read speed is taken from the maximum, consequently a DVD drives maximum read speed is almost never realized. On the other hand Blu-ray's only has one constant read speed:

Blu-ray reads just as fast as a DVD9. It's been proven loads of times.

PEople make such a big deal about PS3s "mandatory installs", but many 360 titles are actually run noticeable better when installed to the Hdd.

And many of PS3 mandatory installs are optimized and keeps it size relatively small. You have some exceptions, like Capcom games, where they insist on extremely large installs. But often they are about 1 gig to 3,5 gig.

I don't know how large space 360 games usually takes when installing to Hdd, but my brother installed Fifa 09 and it took about 6 gigs. He had to install it because of the dreaded disc read error messing up his online play. Not much space left on his 14 gig drive though...

If the Fifa game is a 6 Gig install than the game is 6 gigs on the disc. It installs everything on the disc that way it doesn't spin.

I like how people complain about installation times and sizes and yet its only mostly 3rd party games that resort to this. If I remember correctly, Killzone 2 (the graphical behemoth that it is) along with the 1st Uncharted and several other PS3 exclusives DO NOT require an install to play.
