PS3 Secret Hardware New Information

Megagames has posted further information regarding the PlayStation 3/Minority Report add-on. So far none of this info is offical, but it is all very interesting stuff.

" The add-on, manufactured by Prime Sense, should be reasonably priced as, we are told, it is fairly cheap to manufacture.   The previously mentioned MegaGames friend has been extremely helpful and has provided some additional information on what gamers can expect from the device and how it is expected to affect gameplay.  

According to our reliable source, the Prime Sense device was developed with the terminal Reality interface in mind and to that end, company engineers met the man behind the Minority Report concept. The idea is not new as EyeToy bears obvious conceptual similarities and the Microsoft/Gesture Tek products are expected to provide similar functionality. What is new is the freedom that the device will afford the user and the surprising accuracy with which it will interpret player movements into in-game moves.  

The uses of the device may seem obvious but we will give you some examples which have already been demonstrated by Prime Sense. One such example of the use of the device is of a player tapping his fingers on a table and the device interpreting his movements as the keystrokes of a pianist. Another application demonstrated, perhaps more relevant for a gaming audience, is of a player performing martial arts moves while an accurate virtual representation uses the same moves to dispatch enemy ninjas. An even more impressive example shown was that of a player following on-screen dance moves, with no restrictions to movement, while his moves are accurately recognized as correct or wrong.    

The final demonstration mentioned, is that of a player collapsing some pillars using his avatar. This demonstration highlighted how the virtual representation of the player will interact with the in-game physics."

For those claiming that Sony is attempting to copy Microsoft with these camera features, has there been any info released depicting the 360's camera to perform any functions beyond taking pictures and video chat?

And I can't deny that 360's will come out first, but does anyone honestly believe that Sony did not intend, or at least devise, ways to improve upon the Eye Toy as they moved into the next gen? I mean, why assume that they wouldn't try to expand its functionality and in-game use? Sony's had their present camera out for 3 years now. It makes sense that they've been planning improvements.

When MS COPIES the EYETOY, they are not really copying because its Microsoft, and they WOULD NEVER COPY right. In a presentation at the recent MI6 Game Marketing Conference, Jason Anderson, director of research for the International Development Group (IDG) revealed the research company’s predictions for the near future of console sales, and Gamasutra was present to relay his intriguing predictions.

Anderson began by saying that the U.S. alone accounted for $10.2 billion in revenue, for both hardware and software this year. (Going forward, all statistics and numbers mentioned here concern the U.S. exclusively.) He pointed out a slow decline in PC retail sales, and a rise in handhelds. He then moved onto a particularly interesting topic, next-gen hardware sales.

For 2007, IDG predicts Microsoft dominance for the next two years in the North American next-gen game hardware market, at least in terms of installed base. The forecast predicts 10.6 million consoles in homes for Xbox 360, 6.8 million for PlayStation 3, and a modest 3.5 million for Wii in 2007. In 2008, Anderson suggests 15.5 million units in homes for the 360, 13.5 million for PS3, and 6.8 million for Wii. He does mention that his group expects the PS3 to win out in the installed based race in the end, perhaps in 2009.

As far as the eye toy-motion tracker - super bouncy rubber ball thing - the one part I did not like at all was the part about motion sensing martial arts movement and translating YOUR actions into the game. I don't know abotu anyopne else, and I won't speak for them here, but I play games to play, not to see how pathetic I would really fare in a Kung-Fu fight.

I don't want superfluous crap like this added to gaming. Gamign is an escape from reality, a passtime, not exercise or training or shadow boxing brought to life....

Microsoft, SOny, Nintendo - all of you - get back to making games and stop trying to "gimmick" us gamers to death. E3 had an effect on some developers. While 48.54% stated that, following the show, their anticipation of the hardware is unchanged, 32.52% stated that they've become less confident in the platform. Only 3.39% said that they were relieved by Sony's announcements at the show.

Many developers feel that Sony may have trouble reaching its sales goals. 62.13% feel that the system won't reach 6,000,000 sales by March of next year. In comparison, 35.43% feel that Sony will reach this goal. One developer cited price and competition as reason for this prediction. Another expressed the desire to watch and see how Sony handles things from here on out.

I just bought a 360 today. I gave in folks. I bought oblivion, GRAW, and Call of Duty 2. I have to say. I'm extrememly impressed. Now I understand why you xbox fans are so pumped up about your system. Its cool. I downloaded some arcade games and every demo of games I don't have. I noticed that the demo of Prey is up. Yall won't see me much anymore because I am addicted to xbox live. I have never ever owned a Microsoft system. I can honestly say I'm excited. To Gametime and others who bash the 360, its definately not just s step up in Graphics. Its a Leap foward in every area. I'm so addicted to live. I can't explain it. I watched videos of games displayed at E3 today. I'm just amazed at all the content available for free via live. But anyway, I still love Sony. And if I don't spend all my moeny on upcoming games and xbox live arcade games, I still plan on getting a ps3. I look foward to Gears of War, Mass Effect looks Amazing, and Don't ask me why but ninety nine nights looks incredibly fun. I am now officially a Microsoft fan and a Sony fan. I don't know what that makes me but I feel good about my purchase. By the way, Call of Duty 2 is unbelievable.

DFC Intelligence says Sony could "easily go from first to worst"; thinks brand strength, market position can't overcome $600 price.

In the next-gen console race, there are three main competitors: Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. While many would love to see someone come out with some sort of "Everybody is a winner, hooray!" scenario, the simple truth is one company is going to be declared the loser. Though the finish line is still far down the road, industry analysts are already predicting who will break the tape and who will bring up the rear.

Sony has clearly been the favorite in recent years thanks to the unparalleled success of its PlayStation and PlayStation 2, but one analyst firm believes that the company may tumble down from the top of the heap. In a memo sent out today, San Diego-based DFC Intelligence explained how Sony could go from first to worst.

Though the memo contains the disclaimer that the prediction is "only one of several possible scenarios," DFC appears to be leaning towards Microsoft and Nintendo coming out on top through the next generation.

The main reason DFC sees a slide for Sony is the $600 price tag on the high-end version of the PlayStation 3. Though Sony has touted the machine as inexpensive relative to the hardware contained within it, DFC doesn't think consumers will see it that way.

"Sony has done very little to justify why the system is worth a premium price for consumers that don't care about raw hardware performance and are not hard-core audio/visual consumers," DFC said. "Unfortunately we believe that represents over 90% of the consumers in the marketplace."

DFC recognizes that software plays a large part in buyers' decisions, and points out that the PS2 was so successful because of its diverse portfolio of games and large third-party support. The broad range of software made the PS2 "a complete entertainment system for the family priced under $300," said DFC.

"With the PlayStation 3 the company is going after the high-end power user. It is almost as if Coca-Cola not only decided to go with a new formula, but also decided to exit the low-brow soft-drink business to go into high-end wines," DFC explains. "Of course, there is a market for high-end products but it is 1) a very different consumer type and 2) not nearly as big as the blue collar mass market. Wal-Mart sells more toys than FAO Schwartz and McDonald's sells more beef than Ruth's Chris Steak House."

There doesn't seem to be much of an easy way to right the ship, either. According to DFC, Sony may have drastically underestimated the competition and will have a lot of trouble cutting the price, particularly in time for the critical 2007 holiday season.

"A $600 price point is okay for launch but it will not fly in holiday 2007. If Sony wants to drive unit volume 2007 needs to be not only the year of price cuts, but the year of drastic price cuts. There is going to be a shakeup in the video game industry and even if Sony executes perfectly there could be a new market leader in two years."

did you pull those numbers out of a hat? Not a single industry analyst or financial analyst has shared your blind faith that PS3 will GAIN market share.

At this point, Sony would be happy beyond belief if they can move 20 Million PS3s. Microsoft will also do cartwheels if THEY move past 20 Million systems sold.

This "next-gen" is not about mass-market gaming any more. It is priced too high for mass-market acceptance (and that INCLUDES the $400 XB360 Premium Package). The bigger issue for Sony is not so much the initial high price - launch units and new tech routinely get away with that - but the problem is how to cut the cost of the system fast enough and far enough to eventually attract casual gamers.

Microsoft will be able to realize an eventual price drop of the Core unit to $199 or less, maybe even all the way to $149 in two or three years time. Sony will be lucky to EVER drop the PS3 price to $299. THAT is why they are in so muchj trouble with the pricing - they simply CANNOT get the price down low enough to ever be competitive in the"casual" gaming market.

PC's do not run this game better than the 360, it's just that when you look at this game on a big screen TV - it becomes most obvious that the Doom 3 Engine is dated. I guarantee you that the 360 will have superior anti-aliasing than 99% of all PC's out there, just like in Oblivion. To that end, the only reason why there were more detailed textures and slower loading times in high-end PC versions of Oblivion was because of MEMORY (and specifically RAM!). So if Sony fans want to get on the 360 for it's performance with Oblivion, maybe they should take a deep look at how the memory in the PS3 is not unified, how inferior the RSX is to Xenos GPU, and how when you look at IBM's own white papers and include the operating system; the PS3 has less CPU power than the 360's 3 dual-core CPU's. Anyways, that was for the Betty's and Veronica's of the world but now I'll get back to the topic at hand, ...

The Doom 3 engine is dated, and the metallic-like textures definitely look last-gen when compared to the Unreal Engine 3.0, Halo 3's proprietary engine, and even Ubi-soft's proprietary engine's for the next Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, etc. To me, this game is an example of the absolute best that can be done with the Doom 3 engine and give the developers credit for the amount of objects they included and the associated physics.

To me this is one game, that the 360 could have potentially spit out in 1080p, if Microsoft hadn't capped it at 720p for performance and anti-aliasing benefits. To that end the 360 only does 720p natively, which means that if you output at 1080i then (depending on how your TV scales the signal) you may not be viewing the game the way that the developer wants you to view it. For example, some TV's may actually crop the sides and there may be some things missing on screen, etc, but most TV’s shouldn't have this problem. Also, unless you have bought a very expensive HD-TV in the last few months, then chances are good that even if you have a tv that can display 1080p, it still can't accept a 1080p signal. So to the extent that TV’s may upscale a 720p or 1080i signal to 1080p, you may find differences and even benefits to a 1080i output from the 360. Seriously though, in there pure form, 720p is considered superior to 1080i, especially if your TV has a slow refresh rate (i.e. LCD's, I'm talk’ in about you).

So in closing, if you want to compare the 360 with a PC right now, you should really consult a tech-e (like me :) and not look at the apples and oranges nature of platforms with less versus more MEMORY. 360 owners should take pride in the fact that there is no PC in the market with a GPU even in the same league as the Xenos because it is the only unified shading, Windows Graphic Compliant 2.0 card currently out there at the moment. So when the the 360 is running the Unreal Engine 4.0 and all PC's on the market today (i.e. pre-Windows Vista / Unified Shader architecture) can't ---- that's when it will really become obvious just how powerful the 360 really was when it launched "way back" in 2005. And when the 360 consistently outperforms the PS3, it will start to make people understand just how much knowledge and power Microsoft has over changes in graphical hardware architecture. Because the bottom line people is that Direct X is now king, Open GL is dead, and the 360's GPU is the only one out there that has incorporated Microsoft's advance knowledge of what will be required for the shift to Direct X10, Shader Model 3.0+, etc. You see in order to create the ultimate gaming system (with respect to hardware) you have to have the knowledge of how the available software tools could be adapted to maximize the graphical fidelity on screen, and minimizing bottlenecks and maximizing efficiency goes hand in hand with that process. This is something that Microsoft has a clear advantage over Sony on and so even though Sony is a "hardware" company, they just can't compete. So don't take Sony's word, rather trust Microsoft's statement that the "proof will be in the pudding".

I only have one more thing to add, Sony's whole 1080p claim to fame with the PS3 is a joke and Microsoft did the right thing by limiting game output to 720p and GAURANTEEING a high level of anti-aliasing in games. This is something that Sony couldn't even do with the RSX and so in having "nothing to lose" decided to instead use the 1080p flexibility (more like inability) as a marketing ploy ---- but please Betty and Veronica don't let me have to explain that.

This is what I have been saying. Sony can't compete with microsoft graphics why because it's microsoft that sets how new graphics looks. Not ATI, Not Nvidia it's Mircosoft. They know what we need for the future in terms of graphics. They created Direct X 10 (Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0) and they incorporated in into the xbox 360, no PC graphic card even supports that. Vista will be the first OS to support that, Developers aren't familiar with Direct X 10 so currently they are using Direct X 9 with the xbox 360 games. Developers like Crytek are the ones that use Direct X 10, which is why crysis looks nice and this is why it would look beatiful on the xbox 360. The only thing sony can use it what microsoft has already released which is direct X9 but I heard sony decided to use Open GL instead. Wait a couple years for developers to learn how to use Direct X 10 and the xbox 360 will take off. You think sony's RSX (Nvidia 7800GTX with speed boast) can compete with the Xenos which is built from the ground up for direct X 10. Also burly I think the xbox 360 can render internally at 1080i if the game is developed in 1080i and then the xbox 360 will scale down to 720p. I personally think 1080i is better since the increase in resolution for me greatly outbenefits the progressive screens. I don't notice a huge difference between interlaced and progressive however on my TV 1080i looks better than 720p. To people that don't know both run at 60 frames a second but with 720p you get a full screen every 1/60th of a second while with 1080i you get the even line every 1/60th of a second and the odd lines every 1/60th of a second. But it's so quick that the human eye won't notice espeicailly since the resolution is so high that it's almost impossible to notice.

The 360 supports as of now 720p and 1080i. It all depends on what the game was intended to use. If the game was made for 1080i then it will look best at that resolution. Same with 720p. If the game was intended for that resolution then thats the resolution to set the dashboard to. Now with an update to the dash the 360 can easlily display 1080p. But it would most likely be for movie playback. Right now games using 1080p would be very taxing for the 360 or even the ps3. Thats why you will most likely not see games in 1080p. Thats just the reality of the matter. 2 games are announced for the ps3 that MIGHT use 1080p in the final version. But they also state that they may not because of the trade-off in system power consumption

I looked at both games and I don't think they look "craptacular" to quote one of the threads.

The games look pretty good, BUT, and here is the kicker and the main reason I find myself in a widely anti-Sony mood for now - they do NOT look better than XB360. In fact, several aspects look decidely WORSE.

The water effects in particular are head and shoulders below what is available right now on the otherwise graphically unimpressive Far Cry Instincts: Predator.

I was sold on PS3 after E3 '05. I believed the hype. I was ready to forgo everything for a PS3, but now reality has officially set in. The graphics are NOT even close to E3 '05 demos and until they ARE (in-game and I can play them myself) I will not buy a PS3. This is entirely Sony's own fault. If they delivered the goods as promised by those videos from last year, I would still be strongly considering a PS3.

To repeat - their games look nice, but "nice" is not $200 better per console. "Nice" is just that - nice. That is NOT the type of stunnign visuals they need to move consoles and attract casual gamers to their product.

Make sure when you play Far Cry you play it in 720p. It was made for that and it looks much better in that resolution than if you upscale it to 1080i. Just somthing I thought I would share with you. The 360 version of Far Cry is much better than the PC/xbox versions. Thats another point I make...Developers make the games. Respect what they say about the systems. Ps3 doesn't make games folks. 360 doesn't either. Some casual gamers actually think that the systems make the games. lol....A game is only as good as the developers that makes the games. Thats why software is critical in game developement. Not just hardware specs...

We all know what the specs are for the ps3. On paper it sounds really impressive. They were suppose to launch first quarter 2006. What happened? E3 just passed and what happened? The launch is a few months away and what has been shown? Why are most 3rd party developers saying that all those specs you put up for us are not for top notch games but for blu ray playback? Why when IGN compared the specs of the ps3 and the 360 they came to the same conclusion that developers have already known. The 360 is a more powerful gaming platform. I do think that at some point in the ps3's life cycle developers will put out some decent games. But with Microsofts leading software tools the 360 will top the ps3 as far as a GAMING platform. But who am I? I'm just the Real Deal. Don't take my word. Listen to the developers/editors/and programmers. I know that all those people have got to piss off sony die hards. But its not your fault. Sony tried to be too innovating and dropped the ball as far as Gaming goes. Sony fans have nothing to show but stats on paper. No games official to make launch. No 3rd party developers giving the ps3 the edge over the 360. They have nothing but stats on paper. Without the right softwarel....developers can't make their best work. But I know one thing. Sony's commercials are going to be GREAT. All that HD CGI animation tricking people into thinking thats what the gameplay is going to look like. lol...Some will fall for that. Listen to the developers....A game is only as good as the dev team. A dev team is only as good as the software tools they have to maximize the hardware. Developers HATE working with Sony's tools. Too hard to learn and they don't maximize the hardware. A few developers have already cancelled game production on the ps3. Pc ports most likely won't be coming to the ps3 because of lack of memory. I used to think the same way. I was sucked into all the hype that is ps3. And I'm soooooooooo mad at myself. Because I never got an xbox and I was waiting for a ps3. Well, I recently took the plunge and Jumped In as they say, and I love the 360. I understand now what all the 360 supporters have been saying. I used to be biased and thought Sony could do no wrong. PS has a very broad, deep, weird, cataloge of games, and a under ground style. "The cool kid" style, that's One thing Sony did right to market their system's. The thing MS lacks is diverse cultural influences in the game cataloge. You got it all wrong. Thats what sony would like you to believe. That Microsoft rushed it out. Not true. The xbox 360 and the ps3 were both done hardware at E3 2005. Remember...Sony ps3 was suppose to launch 3 months after the 360 in the first quarter 2006. 360 got to the market sooner because Microsoft chose proven hardware rather than unproven. Its really that simple. Dvd9 is proven and reliable. blu ray is unproven and doesn't improve games. Holding more data means nothing if it streams off at 2x speed rather than 12x of the 360. 3 power pc cores is new territory for the 360 but a major step up from cutting edge computer which are now selling duel cores. Sony's didn't launch 3 months after the 360 because of problems with the cell and the blu ray. Its not because Sony was perfecting anything. lol...Sony had the same specs at E3 2005 minus many now. So instead of make things better over the last year they took features away. Its hard to swallow but its true. Sony made their mistake in trying unproven hardware. Keep in mind you haven't played a ps3 yet. At E3 they had NO playable demos. Thats only a few months from launch. Developers are fleeing for a reason. Why? the ps3 will be an extremely impressive system. considereing both systems have the potential for lifelike graphics, one's slight superiorty in power over the other really doesnt matter. It's all about the games. Last spring i was lead to the belief that the ps3 was going to be twice as powerful as the 360, but after looking at the games and microsofts history of always havng its good multiplayer games "party ready" (as in up to 4player splitscreen instead of ps2 never using multitap), and seeing the other games it had as well that appealed to me, i decided to sell the ps2. There are far more xbox games that appeal to me than ps, thats just my opinion. having the best games (in my opinion) on the most powerful system of its generation is a bonus.

Sony has announced that all PS3 titles will be required to release on Blu-Ray discs in order to assist in their anti-piracy initiatives.
This will not negatively impact DVD Movie playback or Backwards compatability.

This will undoubtably result in higher costs for game disc production for the first year or two but should help hold off the rampant piracy that has occured on the PS2 and PS1.

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has hinted at the company's software pricing strategy for the PS3, suggesting games could be more expensive than Xbox 360 titles.

In a recent interview with US consumer magazine PSM, Hirai was quizzed on the price point for Sony's next-gen software in comparison to the current retail cost of games on Microsoft's Xbox 360.

"Generally speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc based games are maybe US$ 59 on the high end to US$ 39 on the low end," Hirai stated.

"So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say ‘PS3 games now US$ 99.99’."

Although there were no direct figures quoted, Hirai went on to say that Sony will be making its next-gen software "as affordable as possible," but suggested costs could rise from what consumers are currently paying.

"If it becomes a bit higher than US$ 59, don't ding me, but, again, I don't expect it to be US$ 100," he concluded.

Sounds like Kaz is preparing Playstation fans(those that are left, anyway) for the coming sticker shock....

Analyst Mike Wallace from UBS Securities has made the prediction that Sony's Playstation 3 will out sell Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2009.
Mr. Wallace is hopes that Sony will play with 7 million PS3s sold with the Xbox 360 maintaining a lead of 10 million units sold in 2007. He also predicts the Revolution at a distant third place of 3 million units sold. By 2009 however he believes that Sony could barely take the lead. This was with PS3 launching in Spring as announced.
In 2009, UBS predicts the PS3 on top with 23 million sold, the Xbox360 at 20 million sold, and the Revolution with 10 million sold.

Sony has an up hill battle this time around. Most feel its possible they can get the lead but not until 2009 or 2010 when games start to use the Cell that was announced in 2005. But if that pans out to be true. By that time (5 years) there will be new consoles launching on the market that will be more powerful than anything created or imagined now. Sony created a console to compete for 10 years. But Tech changes rapidly and no one knows what type of tech will be available by the time develpers figure out the ps3's potential. One thing to take note. No console has ever won a generation being behind 10 million to 0 .

For 2007, IDG predicts Microsoft dominance for the next two years in the North American next-gen game hardware market, at least in terms of installed base. The forecast predicts 10.6 million consoles in homes for Xbox 360, 6.8 million for PlayStation 3, and a modest 3.5 million for Wii in 2007. In 2008, Anderson suggests 15.5 million units in homes for the 360, 13.5 million for PS3, and 6.8 million for Wii. He does mention that his group is hopeful the PS3 to win out in the installed based race perhaps in 2009 at the same time Microsoft will likely be preparing the xbox 720 launch.

I think that with Microsofts 10 million console lead and Sony's high price point, the 360 will outsell the ps3 PERIOD. With 3rd party developers supposting both consoles the majority of gamers will choose the less expensive but equally impressive 360. But what could really destroy sony's chances is the fact that many 3rd party games are actually looking better on the less expensive 360 than the over priced ps3. And with ps3 games costing more and barely matching the 360 , it could be worse than what annalyst think. From everything I gather people think Sony might pull it off in 2009 just off of name recognition. I think consumers will reject the thought of paying more for less in the end. A few months ago I sold it in ebay for about $300, and it was the premium one too. In the end the PS2 ended up being a better buy.

"Finally most of the cards are on the table and we can start making some more definitive statements about where we think the video game market is going. DFC Intelligence is always adjusting its forecasting model based on changes in the marketplace. Suffice to say events of the past six months have forced us to overhaul our models like never before. It now appears clear that this new generation of console systems is going to result in a big shake-up in the game industry power structure. While it has always been clear that Sony’s dominant market share was destined to decline, there now appears to be the distinct possibility the PlayStation 3 could end up third in market share behind both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

"In looking at all these elements, Sony’s clear strength is the first factor: brand strength and current market position. The glaring weakness of the PlayStation 3 is price, especially when compared to the competition. However, it is more than just an issue of whether the PlayStation brand strength can justify a premium price. Of course, Sony would like to point to the hardware horsepower and extra features like Blu-ray. The problem is that is only one factor in our forecasting matrix. Furthermore, with the competition having features like Xbox Live and the Nintendo Wii controller, the PS3 may not have that much of an advantage in the elusive “Wow Factor.” That gets to the heart of the biggest concern with the PlayStation 3. Sony has done very little to justify why the system is worth a premium price for consumers that don’t care about raw hardware performance and are not hard-core audio/visual consumers. Unfortunately we believe that represents over 90% of the consumers in the marketplace.

"With the PlayStation 3 the company is going after the high-end power user. It is almost as if Coca-Cola not only decided to go with a new formula, but also decided to exit the low brow soft drink business to go into high-end wines. Of course, there is a market for high-end products but it is 1) a very different consumer type and 2) not nearly as big as the blue collar mass market. Wal-mart sells more toys than FAO Schwartz and McDonald’s sells more beef than Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

"Of course, the big problem with the PlayStation 3 is price, and in theory that can be easily solved by simply lowering the price. There is always that core group of consumers that will rush out to buy a new PlayStation system no matter what the price. So it would make sense for Sony to gain as much revenue as possible from those consumers before lowering the price. The vast majority of consumers will not be in the market for a new system until holiday 2007 or later.

"Our concern is that 1) Sony’s hands may be tied in regard to price cuts and 2) Sony drastically underestimated the competition. The price of the PlayStation 3 does not exist in a vacuum and consumers will clearly look at the competitive alternatives. Right now both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii are looking like much better alternatives than they did a year ago. Core PlayStation franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and others are starting to appear on other systems. In short, we have seen ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that would justify a $200 price difference."

Can Sony afford to lose its position in the video game marketplace for a generation of game systems? That is becoming a crucial question. If Sony took a $200 loss on every system to become more price competitive and maintain market share that works out to $2 billion for every 10 million units. Will Sony investors swallow that type of loss?

In forecasting the market we can say this with confidence: a $600 price point is okay for launch but it will not fly in holiday 2007. If Sony wants to drive unit volume 2007 needs to be not only the year of price cuts, but the year of drastic price cuts. There is going to be a shakeup in the video game industry and even if Sony executes perfectly there could be a new market leader in two years. Stay tuned, next month we will formally unveil some of the actual numbers in our forecasts. This month we will just say that yes, Sony could easily go from first to worst in the video game market.

Well, with every PSZero sold, Sony is only making more loss.

For about 300 dollars on each console. They say they'll sell 6 million or so before E3 2007. THat'll be that figure times 300 dollars.

Its true. I should know. I was Sony's Biggest Fan. I bought everything SONY. Dvd players, lab tops, computers, digital cameras, video game consoles, ect. I don't know why I used to hate Microsoft but I did. I would say s lot of the same things that NJ1307 and others have been saying. Now that I'm able to reflect on my life and my choices I see now that I was blind. I was convinced that Sony was the best at everything. I look back and believe that SOny could have sold me an empty box and I would have been happy. In my eyes "Sony could do no wrong". My friends would invite me over and show me the xbox and I would find something wrong with it even though deep down inside I knew it was way better than the ps2. I would say things like "yeah but sony has sold over 100 million systems so its better than your weak little xbox." I don't know why I made that comparisson. Its stupid now that I look back on it. But I'm now mad at myself for being so stupid and close minded. I could have been playing good games on an excellent console but my blind faith blocked me from doing so. Its wierd because I even had a friend bring over his xbox 360 and I kept telling myself I wasn't impressed and it didn't compare to my duel core 3.2 ghz 2 gigs of ram, Nvidea 7900 computer system. I would play it...But for some reason I wasn't impressed. But then the more games I saw. Oblivion, Graw, and Call of Duty 2 and on a HD televion I slowly started getting jelous and angry and impatient. I kept hearing developers diss SONY and the blu ray formatt. So I did it. I used the money I had saved for the ps3 and bought a 360 and 3 games. I love it. I can't believe I waited so long. I like it better than my cutting edge computer and I'm addicted to xbox live. Arcade is great and playing with friends is great. I downloaded the prey demo for my computer and my 360 and the 360 version even with being a port is better than the PC version. My computer rig costed me over 4000 dollars. A 360 is 300 entry level and you get that kind of performance. Microsoft has surpassed all expectations and I'm so happy now. I'm no longer angry. I'm not longer jealous. I now see what xbox gamers are so excited about. Do I still plan on getting a ps3? I don't see how with games like Prey, Gears of War, and Blue Dragon are coming out. Plus almost every game by 3rd parties will be ported FROM the 360 to the ps3. So the games will all look and play better on the 360. The only way I will get a ps3 is if there is a must have title on it and the price drops. Other than that. I don't see how any computer system or gaming system can top what Microsoft has done with the 360. I'm am a converted SONY hardcore fan. And I'm living proof that "its ok to Jump in" I have never once heard on any post board or in any forums anyone upset about purchasing the 360. So 4,999,999 happy gamers thus far. So in short term sony doesnt make money back from launching the ps3 they lose it and sonys stock has plummetted as well. Sony makes back money from accessories and first party games but guess what sony fanboys? If the majority of people buy ps3 for the blu-ray(as several of you sony fanboys love to point out) then those people wont buying games or accessories. Then for the people who do buy the ps3 for gaming with a 500-600 dollar price tag I dont think they will be selling too many games or accessories(BTW 360s are selling with 4.5 games per console and 3 acessories pe console)

While Sony has easily dominated gaming for two console generations and is confidently preparing for a third, a surprising pricing strategy and vigorous moves from Microsoft and Nintendo have many questioning whether the champion will easily win another round.

Adding to the skepticism this week are several reports from industry analysts which point to possible weaknesses in Sony's approach.

During a luncheon at the recent game marketing conference MI6, analyst P.J. McNealy of the American Technology Researchers warned that Sony's PlayStation 3's complexity could prove troublesome.

"This is now the most complex box that's ever been built in this industry. It's going to have a Cell processor, it's going to have a Blu-ray drive. The number of pieces that are going into this box are even more astounding [than the over 1700 parts used in the Xbox 360]," commented McNealy. "While Sony has certain manufacturing advantages at the end of the day, this is a very complex process, and they're going to be limited to the yields that they can come up with."

Sony has set a goal to build six million PS3 units by the end of March 2007 and set a monthly shipping target of one million units per month from launch in November 2006. McNealy also speculated on the production schedule of the complicated next-gen system: "We don't think [Sony] is going to be in assembly for another four to six weeks -- end of July, early August."

Meanwhile, Next-gen.biz reports that the strategic market research and consulting firm DFC Intelligence sees the PS3 as possibly coming in third behind Microsoft and Nintendo in the next-gen console war.

The DFC clarifies that it is guessing and doesn't know "which way the market will shake out," but by looking at several factors to estimate how well a system will do they're concerned for PS3.

"The glaring weakness of the PlayStation 3 is price, especially when compared to the competition," said the report. "Sony has done very little to justify why the system is worth a premium price for consumers that don't care about raw hardware performance and are not hard-core audio/visual consumers. Unfortunately we believe that represents over 90% of the consumers in the marketplace."

While acknowledging that Sony has long been a market leader due to a huge, diverse software library, the report summarized the analysis by pointing out that "a $600 price point is okay for launch but it will not fly in holiday 2007. If Sony wants to drive unit volume 2007 needs to be not only the year of price cuts, but the year of drastic price cuts. There is going to be a shakeup in the video game industry and even if Sony executes perfectly there could be a new market leader in two years."

- According to a news release on AsiaBizTech, Shin-ichi Okamoto said, "We are working to create the PlayStation 3 game machine so that it will have 1,000 times the performance of the PlayStation 2." Okamota, senior vice president of the research and development division of Sony Computer Entertainment, said this when he gave a keynote speech at the "Microcomputer System & Tool Fair '99" held at Tokyo Big Site from Nov. 10-12.

As indicated by the story, SCE surveyed content developers when they were developing the PlayStation 2; the developers said that they would need a performance of 18,000 times that of the PlayStation in order to generate game images in real-time. Sony suggests that the PlayStation 2 is 300 times as powerful as the current PlayStation, falling short of what the content developers had wanted. In regards to this, Okamoto said, "We understand the requirement is half met. We would like to realize the goal in the development of our next version, the PlayStation 3."

- At the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas last weekend, Sony President Nobuyuki Idei spoke with a confidence and determination that should have everyone in the videogame -- and PC world -- reprioritizing their efforts for the next five years. In his keynote address Idei said that the PlayStation 2 will change the way we use the TV, but more importantly he indicated that PlayStation 2 and its multimedia abilities would overshadow the role that once belonged to the PC.

Bold words indeed. But Idei's remarks were clear. He expects the PlayStation 2 to merge the lines between PCs, games, music, movies, and appliances. As was reported in September, the PlayStation 2 offers phenomenal graphics and previously unseen game features, as well as backward compatibility, Internet connectivity, and a set of new peripherals -- including a massive hard drive (for downloading movies) -- that will take place in the year 2001.

During the presentation, Sony showed several PlayStation 2 demos, including a flock of birds, two mannequin heads, an hourglass demo with cool reflections, GT 2000, and Dark Cloud movies, none of which were terribly interesting if you have seen any of the past demos, including these. But it wasn't the demos that were of so much interest. It was Sony's plans to merge everything into the PlayStation 2, and the amount of excitement the company has generated for developers. While a few sites have posted that 250 titles are supposed to be available at launch of the PlayStation 2, officials have refuted this as misinformation. Sony and its second and third party developers are working on about 250 game titles all together for the year 2000 and 2001, but not all for the March 4, 2000 launch in Japan.

Another important note to make is that many Sony internal teams are in fact gearing up for PlayStation 2, while more and more non-videogame companies will get involved in various software for the system. Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, added this: "This is the first mass-market product for the broadband world. We believe that PlayStation 2 will actually accelerate the deployment of broadband networking into consumers' homes. We are poised to take this to the next level of entertainment."

"Some call Sony a hardware company," Idei added. "Some call it a media company. What we are and what we will be is a broadband entertainment company."

While Sony, however, didn't directly suggest that the other devices it demoed, the Memory Stick and the Sony MiniDisc Cam, were directly compatible with PlayStation 2, it seems Sony's plans are all but revealed. Phil Harrison, Vice President of R&D, has officially said in at least one magazine interview that the I-Link port on the PlayStation 2 will play a huge part in the hardware device's launch into the mainstream. Harrison said the I-Link port is for media out as well as media in. Consumers can input digital still camera and digital video media, AV in-home networks, printers, scanners, digital sound sources, and other similar things into PlayStation 2. As was the case in Japan, Harrison in San Jose brought a random volunteer on stage to prove that the demos were actually being rendered in real time. Motoring a rubber ducky and a toy submarine through a water-filled tub, the volunteer was able to control their movements, submerge them or drain and refill the tub. All of which brought on a round of hearty applause.

The other demos shown conveyed the astounding abilities of both the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer: These included multi-colored balls racing toward the screen (on which each ball was made up of 2,000 polygons per ball); high resolution feathers that showed off the machine's alpha blending capabilities; Fireworks, Blurring, exemplified by water effects; curved expressions, which included a face that morphed into different shapes and objects with ease; depth of field, and of course, the Bath demo (including rubber ducky et al).

If - and that is a big if - the specs mentioned at the IEEE conference are true, you could theoretically render a real-time version of Mainframe's flagship series ReBoot. Some of Mainframe's best tech people did the preliminary math and it COULD be done, albeit with a loss of texture detail, rendering quality, and perhaps facial animation. There's a big entertainment idea: TV shows with endings that gamers can interactively decide. I'd never leave my couch!

Sony brought in journalists and developers from across the globe to reveal its Dreamcast-killer, and demonstrated the unit, several key demos (including Tekken 4, the ballroom dance from Final Fantasy, the R4 girl, Crash in a chase), and spoke about the machine's possibilities and the company's hopes for it. An IGNPS2 reporter was there to see it all. According to our correspondent, everyone around the conference room crowd was uniformly stunned by what it saw and the new paradigm that Sony's new machine is aimed at creating for the videogame industry.

The specs to the "PlayStation 2" are even higher than previously believed. While the unit can process up to 75 million polygons per second - that's right, 75, not 60 million as previously believed - with all effects turned on, the unit could render an amazing 20 million polygons per second. That's 17 million polygons per second more than Sega's Dreamcast (which, with all effects turned on, produces 3 million polygons per second). Wow. Also, according to our correspondent, the game actually animates at 60 frames per second, so though it can't produce these frames that fast; it is smart enough to automatically apply motion blurring to each frame.

So how does this all break down to real-world, gameplay power?

The main CPU, in combination with the graphics synthesizer, has enough power to equal or rival some of the power of workstations being employed at CG development studios. With the amount of polygons and textures that the system can crank out a second with all of the system's effects in place, we could see worlds that could equal what was in use in the movie Toy Story. While the maximum number of polygons the system can generate is 75 million polys a second (66 million a second to be on the cautious side), obviously that number will drop dramatically when you throw textures, lighting, and filtering into the mix. Still, with everything turned on, the system can generate 20 million polygons a second. And that, my friends, is no slouch. This number rivals VooDoo 3 (9 million) and Dreamcast (6 million), so expect some serious graphics prowess when the next PlayStation is launched.

What Sony intends to push about the next system is the consoles ability to make 3D objects look and feel more real, with a technique called "Emotion Synthesis." With the system's power, developers can employ realistic motion in characters' hair and clothing in real-time, as well as how objects react to real-world elements such as gravity, friction, mass - as well as how they react against surfaces such as water, wood, metal, and gas. This may seem very ambitious for a game system, and it's completely up to the talents and development time of the individual developers. But if companies plan to develop for the next PlayStation system, they've got a whole new world to utilize.

The CPU also has MPEG2 decompression built-in, which gives the system the ability to decode MPEG2 data on the fly. Granted, it will assist in the quality of Full Motion Video sequences - like those seen in Final Fantasy VII - but it also allows developers to compress its texture set using the powerful compression ratio that MPEG2 offers.

On the same line of thought, the console will also have a DVD-ROM drive. It hasn't been announced whether or not the console will be able to play DVD movies, but it's not out of the question. Currently, the first games for the console will be on normal 650 megabyte CD-ROMs, and Sony will continue to use them until a specific game deems it necessary to use the massive storage of a 4.7 Gig DVD disc.

The audio chip in the console will have the ability to utilize digital enhancements for games, including AC-3 and DTS that are used in current DVD players. These enhancements, when coupled with a receiver, will give true directional surround sound from five different speakers - that is, of course, if the gamer has the setup.

And thanks to the new system's standard I/O CPU, it will be 100% compatible with all existing PlayStation games. The I/O unit is essentially the PlayStation's CPU, and since the system can utilize standard CDs, every game made for Sony's first game system will play on its next generation unit. It isn't clear if the system will enhance existing games -- signs point to no, but don't count this out as a last-minute feature.

The system will also include a USB port that will enable gamers to hook up keyboards, digital cameras, and other devices.

It will also be completely compatible with the HDTV standard, but games will run at a standard resolution of 640x480 out of the gate. It is unclear if the system will have built-in 16:9 modes for televisions with that aspect ratio, but since some PlayStation and N64 games include this feature, it's almost a definite.

The PlayStation 2's new microprocessor will enable games to render nearly 50 times more 3D image data than Dreamcast, a serious leap over Sega's much-vaunted console, which processes 3 million polygons with all effects in use. From everything I have read thus far ps3 and the 360 will be simular minus the online componant because no real info has came out yet about ps3's online and thats Microsofts clear strengths. Most developers are clearly saying xbox 360 is easier and cheaper to develope for. Most developers have stated that ps3's true potential won't be tapped into for 3 or 4 years. And the ps3 is priced 200 dollars above the 360. The reason the 360 came out first is not because it was rushed. Ps3 and the 360 were both done at E3 2005. Its just that the 360 was using proven hardware. Dvd9, 3 3.2 ghz cores, ect. So they had less problems. Remember...the ps3 was suppose to launch 3 months after the 360. Thats within the launch window. Sony delayed the ps3 not to add features but to take away features. Less usb ports, less ethernet ports, and no dual hdmi interface. And with problems with the blu ray drive and cell manufacturing. If it wasn't for those problems...they would have launched on time and no one would say Microsoft rushed the 360 to market. That is a LIE. Gamers win with this next gen. They have choices. If you want Halo 3, Gears of War, and GTA then you choose the 360. If you want the games ps3 confirms for launch...then get the ps3. Don't forget the text in early PS3 pictures.

Finally, someone who speaks sense. I've been saying that for months, and months, just to be hit with crap from Sony Fanboys.

At the end of the day, I will be purchasing a Wii to sit next to my X360. I will then be purchasing a PS3 to sit next to my X360, but the PS3 won't be bought until 2007 when MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Assassins Creed and Final Fantasy arrive for the console.

So far, not a lot of titles have been mentioned for PS3 launch, but the ones that have are either very poor, or already available on the X360 at a cheaper price, hense why I will wait until something playable comes along.

Until then Mario and Master Chief will keep my company!

About this "Sony delayed the ps3 not to add features but to take away features. Less usb ports, less ethernet ports, and no dual hdmi interface." What would you call HDD as stantard and tilt function in controller? I think those are added features. You still got 4 USbs, do you eally need more, or that many ethernet ports. Really, how many need two screens to play, or has afford that many? Those were arguments against PS3 after E32005, now they did like gamers wanted and still get scolded. Don't forget the text in early PS3 pictures.

The latest Bungie Weekly Update has revealed that in addition to multiplayer, the Bungie staff is already testing single-player campaign missions.

Multiplayer, single player, you name it, folks are playing it. The lab formerly known as the multiplayer lab is now also the single player lab, where folks may go in at just about any time and start playing through a selection of single player Campaign missions.

At this point, they're testing out the new AI and encounters as much as anything else. The graphics are brilliantly lit and detailed objects. But again, this is a gameplay test, not a graphics one. Lots of folks focus on what technology can do for the appearance of a game - but the 360's prodigious horsepower can also be applied to AI - the behaviors, movements and reactions of computer-controlled characters. That counts for your human allies, but it's more noticeable at this early stage in the behavior of your opponents.

Today, I swear I saw some Grunts do a classic pincer-movement to trap me in a narrow canyon. I was battling um, something bigger than a Grunt, and suddenly, I'm being peppered by a second group of jerks, mostly Grunts, who'd been sent in around my flanks to take me out. Grunts are still grunts though, and once I showed some serious opposition, a couple of them panicked and fled, but they nearly had me and it was quite a shock.

When the single player guys file out (or as is often the case, stay put) then the multiplayer sessions begin in earnest. We were trying out a new multiplayer game type - and it is super fun, yet utterly terrifying at the same time. I have never, ever heard so much frightened screaming during a play test of anything. And plenty of laughing too.

1. the obvious. we would have had to waited a whole year to play the good games we play now.

developers have had plenty of time. just check out the games that are out.

2. most of the games are multi-platform. those games aren't going to be stripped down for the 360 unless you're talking about cinematics (lower resolution for the 360 version, but who cares? it's cgi). pay a LITTLE extra? by extra you mean $200 extra? just use the ingame engine for it to save on space. duhh. they're powerful and capable enough.

3. in a year? the new hd-dvd and bluray players out are flawed because theyre new. are you suggesting that people should wait a year to buy a ps3 after all the bugs have been kinked out?

DVD9 is enough for GAMES. For you see Karibu thats why the 360 is so much cheaper than the ps3 and jib is right new tech might be buggy and just because you have to wait an additional year for your console doesnt make ps3 better. 360 is cheaper and all the reports out of E3 showed 360 games looking better than ps3s and games that were multiplatform(PS3,360) looked better on 360 and other multiplatform games werent even shown on PS3 just on the 360. My point: 360 is cheaper, it is on 2nd gen games, proven technology which probably one of the reasons why its so easier to develop for than ps3, disc space shouldnt be a problem especially if games are being ported from 360 to ps3, and sony fanboys always talk about ps3 is more powerful than 360. Do any of you sony fanboys know how much? No. Obviously it isnt that much otherwise ps3 games would be looking better than 360 games but like I said based off of reports out of E3 360 games looked better.

What you have to understand is that most die hard sony fans wouldn't buy microsoft even if they had blu ray or hd dvd in the 360. Certain people will buy Sony only regardless of what the competition provides. Thats the sad part. I think 360 did everything right when it comes to Next Gen gaming. But sony fans will always find somthing to bash.

I'm not gonna sit here and list over 100 games first party and third party coming out for the 360 this year that aren't first person shooters. I just think thats all sony fanboys choose to see. There are many many other games that are top notch that aren't shooters. Racing games, Fighting games, RPG's, Action adventures, Platformers, mmo's, ect...But i'm not trying to convince you to get a 360. I just want misconceptions to be set right. 360 has many other experiences that Gamers will miss out on and thats a shame with it being such a low price. IGN ps3 told its readers that they would be missing some exclusive top notch games. They personally recommend getting both. 360 and the ps3. Sony ain't going no where, and neither is Microsoft. So why don't us gamers enjoy both for what they have to bring to the table. Its just easier for most consumers to go with microsoft this next gen because of Sony's price.

It's like this, every Xbox fan is adverticing those games here, in every news(or it feels like it) that it gets in one point rather irritating.
You see Xbox360 section is right next in left corner... it's not too hard for people who are interested X360 games to click that link. I don't want to read PS3 news with full of xbox propaganda, if I may say so. This is nothing against you, xbox, or other xbox fans. I want my coffee black, not with milk. yeah the only benefit i saw from blu-ray were the hd cgi movies. i think all that can be done using in-game engine for the cut-scenes which saves A LOT of space and loading time.

as for saying you want japanese audio? for me this just still doesnt justify a delay and the extra cost.
