PS3 Price Cut to be announced at Tokyo Games Show

In their latest issue, PlayStation World Magazine have an article which could indicate the announcement date of the PlayStation 3 Price cut.

PS3 does need a price cut though if they want to compete with the 360 and wii this christmas. Doing a price cut at E3 or half way through the year would of been pointless, simply due to many people dont buy consoles in Summer, and doing this would allow Sony to get extra money up until the price cut.

Many analysts including patcher have also said they expect a price cut at TGS so I can believe this.

Plus, Ninty AND Sony tend to share their stuff mych more between the two, probably as it's their big, home convention-in fact IIRC they actually spend a little more on their presentations there than at E3(though , personally, I'd like it best if the pair of them wer scrapped as they're mainly press junkets that waste cash that could be spent on console or game dev and tell us nothing that couldn't be released much more effectively and cheaply in other ways)over the past couple of years.

The timing of it, just pre Xmas, may also make it a great place for this kind of thinmg too-it's not as daft as you might think anyway.

TGS is at the right time, september - microsoft cut their 360 price in september which sent their sales sky high for months after that.

Anyway, I was pretty sure they would announce a price drop at TGS. Back when they were asked why no price drop was announced, Sony said that E3 wasn't the place to do it. Which obviously meant they would be doing it at another event. Closer to the holiday season makes more sense.

If you go to best buy or any electronics store that has a local competitor, they will pricematch the same product, if you find it cheaper,that way they keep your business. So i kept looking around and finally saw the 80gb $399.99 ps3 for 349.99(Hint:the store has a blue uniform, but barely sales any electronics,alot of software though). I went to Circuitcity(when it was still open,could go to bestbuy too)I got it pricedmatched with an additional 10%off the diff, so I payed $345.50, now people say"only $55bucks ?", but if you think about it, I only paid $45 more than a Xbox360 pro model thats $300, and i got a bigger harddrive and bluray player, intergrated wifi, for only $45. If something looks out of reach, don't be so quick to give up, there's always a way to get it!!!!!

Almost every console has gone through a "shrinking" process, so the likelyhood of the PS3 Slim being real is a safe bet. As far as the price cut goes nobody really knows, but what I do know is that once they reduce the price I will be picking one up...Uncharted 2 looks way to good :).

There is a big problem with price drops. That it's difficult or almost impossible to predict the impact it will do to sales.

When Sony released the PS3 they were 200% certain that the price was right and people would buy the PS3 without prejudice.

I remember all the PS3 is a "Theater" and expensive "car" arguments from Sony which showed extreme confidence on their price.

less than 6 months later they were forced to drops the price by $100 which still didn't help them selling as many as they hoped.

In 2008 the once again drops the price of the PS3 even lower than the xbox 360 elite. As a result (including the release of metal gear and other high profile PS3 games) the PS3 started to sell better than the xbox 360. Which means the price drop helped the PS3.

Microsoft then reacted by dropping the price of the xbox 360 completely nullifying Sony's price drops which cost the xbox 360 to end 2008 with over 1,122,200 more units sold than the PS3 in the US alone.

So far in 2009 the PS3 has not being able to show better sales than the xbox 360 not even for a single month and we are already half way into the year.

Consoles sales this year indicate the PS3 sales are in decline while the xbox 360 are increasing.

The previous year is an example of why Sony is reluctant about dropping the PS3 price. Even after dropping the price in 2008... they still sold more consoles in 2007.

Many argue that Microsoft will not drop the price again.. that they can't afford it even thought Projects like Project Natal prove Microsoft commitment to do wherever it takes to beat Sony this generation. They believe that Sony though being the one company in reads this year can drop the price of the PS3....

The fact is that... if Microsoft response again to a PS3 price drop with a xbox 360 price drop as they did in 2008... it can once again make things worst for Sony.. since it may not improve sales and they be left with making less money or even losing money on production cost.

I've been saying for a couple of weeks now that Sony should not cut the price until they can afford to cut the price to within $50 of the Xbox 360.

They have to anticipate a retaliation from Microsoft if the cut the price, and they can not afford to cost $300 while the 360 is costing $200 with hard drive.

However, I do believe that these constant rumors of price cuts are pinning up some sales. They may want to consider some meaningless price cut just to stop the rumors for a while. They may need an amount that is not enough to generate a response from Microsoft but enough to say "we just cust the price," something like a $20 price cut.

good point Gamecube was also the cheapest console to date selling at a way lower price then the PS2 and Xbox and it still didn't outsell the PS2 or the xbox for that matter the only reason nintendo made lot's of profit off it because it was so cheap to manfucter where as the PS3 is still expansive when manfuctring comes to mind they already were selling PS3 for less then an actually bluray player at launch and they were still loseing money then the only reason there was a price drop before for the system was because bluray players went down in price but there still more expansive then the PS3 sony and it still didn't help there profits I'm thinking the only reason sony is announcing another price cut is because bluray players dropped in price again but there still going to lose the same amount of money since PS3 still selling less then actually bluray players

There are more than enough quality games for PS3 to warrant a purchase. Arguably this gens best new ip in Uncharted is exclusive.

Also the best selling bluray player is the PS3 i believe
