1UP: Heavy Rain Preview with new videos

1UP's Matt Leone writes: I'm happy to say that overwhelmingly, the most impressive aspect is the pacing. Without a narrator, I get to listen more closely to the game's music, which does a fantastic job of ramping up the tension. When I get to the scene where Jayden tries to arrest Mad Jack but gets dizzy, I feel extremely anxious when the button symbols disappear so quickly that I can't press them in time. As a scene trying to make the player feel tense, it certainly works.

Will people kindly get off the "this game is for mature people, anyone who doesn't like it simply doesn't get it and is clearly immature" bandwagon? It's a video-game, kids. If you think you're somehow a high-brow intellectual because you enjoy playing a video-game with a good story then you're clearly suffering from a chromosome deficiency or haven't finished puberty yet. I have a feeling that I won't enjoy this game, I have a distaste for QTEs, so how is it that you can only be mature by suffering through a gameplay mechanic you abhor just so you can watch another long cut-scene play out. That "ends justify the means" argument doesn't sit well with me.

This game will be awesome, Indigo Prophecy/Farenheit was one of the best games last gen, and it was not boring at all and a lot of it was QTE. But the whole game isn't QTE.

Amazing stuff, really amazing. Sony conference must be really packed, otherwise is impossible to understand why they are spilling the beans so close to it. First Uncharted2, the highly secretive Trico project and now Heavy Rain with a full gameplay video (looking amazing btw). Wow, I cant imagine what Sony got in reserve for us.

EDIT: I just watched the GTTV video. It is muuuuch better. The game indeed looks AMAZING.

The graphics look good but they are not the same as the tech demo.

I was really hoping they could achieve that technical level of detail. When I first watched that trailer, it looked like a real human being. Now you can definitely tell that it is a game.

Indeed it does seem they took a different direction witch is a shame. That tech demo was phenomenal.

I know it was just a tech demo, but I want THAT game. This version should still be decent enough. I did enjoy Indigo Prophecy, so this should be good. But man I want the first trailer's graphics!

...I know that screenshots taken from the PS3 directly from the console and put on a PC makes the game look worse than what you see (my MGS4 stills didn't look too good after I ported them)... but the hair from the guy looks too different from the woman standing in the rain in the trailer. Only a demo can sort this out.

Beavis these guys are actually right. Using the word game to describe this is a bit of a stretch. It's an adventure tittle. Similar to a movie but instead you decide the outcome, the "gameplay" consists of pushing quicktime events and watching the events unfold. This isn't a game, but instead its closer to a movie, very similar to past tittles like myst, or dragons lair. Those expecting this to be a video game will be sadly disappointed. Unfortunately most people here just hype it because it is an exclusive.

socomnick, to me you have described two games there. Myst and Dragon's Lair were both very enjoyable. Although the gameplay is much different from that of a fps or rpg, it is a breath of fresh air seeing things of this nature start to appear in the market. Whether exclusive or not, Cage puts a lot of attention into his stories and even if it controlled horribly, I would be drawn in by the story.

Anyone who played Indigo Prophecy could tell you that they struck the right balance between quicktime events, exploration and puzzle solving. From what I've seen I have no reason to suspect they've strayed too far from that formula with Heavy Rain.

Now, if you don't like adventure games, your simply not going to like this and that seems to be the category that socomnick and others fit into. Personally, I'm not a fan of RTS console games - but I don't go onto forums discussing them to simply bash the genre because I don't like it. That would make me some kind of tool. Perhaps socomnick would do well to stick to a conversation he could contribute to. It's like going onto a sushi eating forum just to yell "I hate sushi!" Did he just mention Shadow of the Colossus and ICO? Only three games has ever left an emotion impact on me and they are Final Fantasy VII when Aeris Died (put this game down for about a year before playing it back), ICO , and Shadow of the Colossus when Agro died. I remember in Ico I didn't want to run because it look like I was hurting her. So I walk most of the time. wow that brings back a lot of memories. Sigh. You are an idiot. This is the exact same engine that ran the game last year. So no, no "bait and switch" (especially since the footage from last year was a freaking demo on the PS3). All the effects and bells and whistles are still there. It's just that the character model for Jayden is not as well designed as that of the reporter from last year. It looks very awkward and is unpleasant. Hopefully they fix that. The black guy looks fine though.

This game cannot be done onthe 360. It's amazing what they are doing in terms of pushing the PS3. I'm not saying the 360 is bad, by all means I would say that the 360 is the second best console this gen in terms of graphics but the PS3, is at a solid 1st place.

I'm going to have to agree. I'm a PS3 fan (I like my 360 too), but this really doesn't cut mustard with me. The "game"-play looks flat and boring with about as much interaction as an interactive DVD. The QTEs are simply there to keep you from wandering off or falling asleep, it would seem. The "investigation" pieces are not very entertaining looking either.

But the graphics have taken a major step backward. The geometric detail has lapsed considerably, similarly the facial animations and the animation in general have also degraded. What happened here? Considering David Cage's comments about the graphics, I'm failing to see what part of this can't be done and hasn't been done on 360, not to mention a plethora of superior looking PS3 titles. Ever notice how devs only gloat about their game's graphics when there's little to gloat about?

its definitely not a good but that could simply be polish or lack of. The blur filters and whatnot are only apparent in the backdrops of that recent vid. Time will tell but i do hear where you're coming from. Calling it bait n switch is a bit far though. Its best to wait until its finished. These accusatons were also labled at games such as MGS4 and killzone 2. I even remember some people making a complaints about 'teh barbed wire' on the early killzone 2 vids/demo's. From now to release is clean n polish time im sure

Ok, I hadn't heard much about this game, but now I'm a bit more familiar with how this will play out. It's a very slippery slope when you develop this type of game. They need to go all out to make this an absolute blockbuster and to hold people's attention.

I loved Indigo Prophecy when I was younger, so I hope this type of game will hold up for me in my adult years. I just pray that they don't make the whole thing an interactive movie.

As long as this games story is engaging and emotional then I know I'll enjoy it. A lot of QTE doesn't bother me one bit. I like the fact that if you mess up on some QTE it can change the outcome of the entire story. Having a whole lot of different possibilities when it comes to how the story plays out sounds great.

If a game has a good enough story then it can really leave a lasting impact and isn't another forgettable point and shoot game.

Being a multiplatform owner its great as you have the best of what each console has to offer. I've got this on pre-order as loved David Cage's previous game.

Does it look great? Yes but from the looks of it and this is just my view, it could be done on the Xbox, graphically, no problem. David Cage is just doing free hype for all his hard work thats all.

I suppose it must be down to the blu-ray disc, level length, tv shows in apartments, music, dialouge.

I don't actually see this game doing terribly well on the PS3, unfortunately. I'm all for devs trying to be different and what-not, but most of the people I know who've bought PS3s simply want another Call of Duty, Gran Turismo (or Burnout), Final Fantasy, Pro Evo (or FIFA) or gimmicky games like Guitar Hero. They have nowt but little time for any of the bigger titles, some have picked up Uncharted at the bargain bin price, but they've largely ignored what I would call the cream of the crop, ie. LBP, Killzone, MGS4 and Valkyrie Chronicles(Uncharted's the best, IMO). Heck, these people would be more suited to owning a 360 than a PS3.

What's funny about Heavy Rain is that it's appeal would almost lie more along the "casual" market. I know I'll take a lot of flak for that, but the casual market love games like Hotel Dusk, no doubt if this game was released on the DS somehow it would sell in much higher numbers.

i know people who work on video games and trust me, the ps3 and 360 will really come into their own after E3, there are games unannounced now that will delight owners of either console. Both are amazing machines and having talked and talked with these people, the only difference in their mind is that the PS3 has blu-ray which is a good move by Sony in the long run. Both are very powerful machines graphic wise. So take no notice to these people who think your console is poor due to their out of their deluded mind, it isnt, whatever machine you have out of the two are amazing.

It reminds me of Resident evil 4 when you have to hit buttons or tap buttons or move the joystick in a direction to get away... those cutscene to cutscene fights and if u dont hit the right button u die. I mean how can you enjoy a game when your looking to see if a button will be available to push... I for one cant even pay attention to the world when im looking for buttons and options.. How bout they actually make a game where you can actually role around and do all this cool stuff and run on your own. Keep the character dieing system, but dont turn it into cutscene after cutscene. After watching the 1st video, i got to say that the interview reminded me something important.

I often find myself not enjoying some games as much as i would have years ago, and couldn't find an answer why. The interview made me realise that is because i have been playing the same types of game over and over again for years, the freshness and hook were long gone. Companies like Capcom are the ones i will avoid for the rest of this generation, I just can't hold any interest in their games beyond the 2nd hour into them.

I totally agree with David Cage says, far too many games fall under the 'Toy' category, RE5, DMC4,tt new wolverine game, basically games that lack depth,creative vision and soul. They may entertain the masses, but they sure don't work for me. I want the 'Artistic' ones, games like MGS4,ICO and (hopefully) Heavy Rain, games that stir something within me...games that i will continue to talk about even after this gen is over.

This may sound fanboyish, but Sony seems to be the company that takes the most risks by investing in this sort of games that while successful critically, usually(more often than not) fails to become commercial successes

I enjoy run of the mill games to a degree but they never give the same impact as a unique experience. When I played the Devil May Cry demo for the first time I hadn't played anything quite like it and it was amazingly fun. Now I really have no desire to play any DMC game because it's the same thing and doesn't get any better. I got DMC4 recently for cheap just to try it and I hate the game.

A Game: A situation in which a player or more are confronted with a set of problems in which they must must make decisions...

QTE's, puzzles, and even "path choosing" are all choices, and there fore, games. Just because you aren't killing aliens in fps o over-the-shoulder-shooters (360º main exclusives) doesn't make it "an interactive movie".

Look at Shenmue, what was seen as one of the most revolutionary games to date in terms of integrating various video game generes and story telling, nobody shat on it for its QTE's and "lack of blowing enemies' heads off with awsum gore graphics" because it was fresh, different and it took risks, and deserves far more credit than any mega budget next-gen FPS with no story and 10 million fan boys.

I love to play those mindless games too, but there has to be variety, and the big shame is that the gaming world is showing big lack of it right now ( too many FPS, too many RTS Games of WWII, too many RPG's set in "medeival-like times", too many ****** mascot spin-offs).

The FBI agent is a different scene and just like any other game different scenes/levels look more impressive than others for a variety of reasons. Not only did they show the Madison footage from the taxidermist house, but they showed Madison's same character model in the club. Guess what? She looked exactly the same. And that scene from last year was a 20 min gameplay demonstration. Are some of you that retarded? Did you see in any previews, "Oh man it doesn't look anything like what I saw before!" Bullshit. Show me one game with a club scene as convincing as this game. There were maybe a couple hundred characters onscreen with similar detail to Madison and no slow down. Didn't play Blade but QTE's are cool. This game isn't an action game so it shouldn't be reviewed as such. It seems like an interactive 3d Graphic adventure game which is more story driven which is a nice change of pace from the norm. It should be graded as a single unique product within the graphic adventure set. It may just revolutionize and invigorate the genre also with a good story and fluid play mechanics, even if simple may justify a really good score regardless of the amount of QTEs.

major drop in visuals. we have had MGS, KZ2 coming GOW3, Uncharted and now this Silent Hill esque clone with out the blood and gore?

From what was clearly a tech demo to this footage. tut tut Sony! It feels like they have tried to pull the wool over our eyes.

Really hate to say this but one of the AAA for PS3 looks like its on it way down to a UUU.

The visuals are fine, half of the stuff looks as good or better than what's been shown and half of the stuff is under the specific ARI post-process effect.

Here's what I will say. Facial animations aren't so hot, they aren't terrible IMO but they could use some work, the black guy had pretty good anim but the Jayden's face was always so flat. The black dude seemed a little overaccentuated in the lips and cheeks, also it could have used more polys in the cheeks to smooth him out a bit.

The whole scene with Jayden in the car he's wearing a flat expressionless mask, this suggests to me that there is facial animation that is yet to go in so hopefully patience will be rewarded.

The dialogue is a little weak but I'd prefer to withhold judgement until we have more to go on.

I think once more club scene footage comes out at E3 we're going to be reevaluating any talk of graphics.

As has been mentioned before they're in alpha stage so hopefully there's another level of polish to be applied to this. It looks great as it is now however.

This doesn't look as good as the early previews.. Also, the facial animation is not as good as heavenly sword, for example. That game had the best facial animation to date.

is a shame about heavenly sword. was nothing wrong with it sony hurt it by not supporting enough. clearly heavy rain has not got any further forward.

I'm just so disappointed with what I have witnessed.

Who cares if it's QTE. It's either good or it isnt.

Some games are shooters. Some devs do it well, others do it poorly.
Some games are fighters. Some devs do it well, others do it poorly.
Some games are racers. Some do it well, others do it poorly.
THIS game is a QTE. This is a dev who has done it well.

If you don't like shooters, dont play them. If you don't like fighters, don't play them. And if you don't like QTE, DON'T PLAY THEM!

I like what he said in the first video how the "engine" was the expensive, time consuming part of development! Now qd has it built, guerrilla has kz2's built etc.. more great games on the way on ps3!
Also when he said we'd be "surprised" about what is in store next from QD! And when asked will they be out in a "couple years" he INSTANLTLY said "maybe not!"
Also just to speculate on the comments about "not possible on xbox360"
I imagine the engine and scope, coupled with visuals(even if they will be slightly less than previously shown!" could only be stored on a blu-ray disc or hdd combo?
"ravage27" was right about most games really are in the "toy" category! I am impressed with "infamous" but like most games, it has that "toy" quality to it!

I really enjoyed Indigo Prophecy and this looks like it's shaping up to be pretty good, too. However, I do hope the finished product looks a little better. As someone who plays a lot of Jrpgs, visuals are not something I usually care about, but in a game like this, they matter a lot. As it stands (from those videos), it looks "fine". Fine isn't good enough for a game like this.

Guys come on! This is a "demo" - "demonstration" focused on the gameplay...

As far as we are concerned they just need to preload the game with a few other plug-ins / renderers to make the "magic" kick in and make it all pretty (lighting, rendering, etc.)

Don't knock it off for graphics. + since we always defend that PS3 has more to it than pretty graphics / graphics aren't everything, lets use that mentality NOW!
